LAS VEGAS – March 8, 2013 – Qualifying for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was canceled due to inclement weather today for the first time in the track’s 15-year history.
The starting grid will be determined per the NASCAR rulebook; and because teams did not practice Friday the lineup has been determined primarily by 2012 owners’ points. A total of 44 cars were entered for Sunday’s race, and the qualifying rainout determined that Mike Bliss (Toyota) is the only driver who will miss the race.
Additionally, with the race being the third of the 2013 season, the top 36 teams from 2012 owner points will start in positions 1 through 36.
Reigning Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski (Ford) will start on the pole and 2012 Series runner-up Clint Bowyer (Toyota) will start second.
There will be 14 Team Chevy driver’s in Sunday’s race. Starting in the top 10 will be Jimmie Johnson, No. 48 Lowe’s/Kobalt Tools Chevrolet SS – 3rd, Kasey Kahne, No. 5 Farmers Insurance Chevrolet SS – 4th, Kevin Harvick, No. 29 Rheem Chevrolet SS – 8th, No. 14 MOBIL 1 Racing/Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet – 9th, Jeff Gordon, No. 24 Drive to End Hunger – 10th.
Other starters in the top 10 are: Greg Biffle (Ford) – 5th, Denny Hamlin (Toyota) – 6th, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Ford) – 7th.
With no past champions and no 2012 or 2013 race winners among those not already in the field, the next spots went to teams in the top 36 in 2013 owner points.
Among those, Danica Patrick, No. 10 GoDaddy Racing Chevrolet SS will make the field with a 37th place starting spot. A total of 43 drivers will start the Kobalt Tools 400, which takes the green flag on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 12:00 p.m., and will be aired live on FOX.
