TALLADEGA, AL — Talladega Superspeedway is proud to congratulate legendary “Alabama Gang” member Donnie Allison and local author Jimmy Creed on the re-release of their book “Donnie Allison … As I Recall.”
Fans visiting Talladega Superspeedway for the upcoming Aaron’s Dream Weekend (May 3-5) will have several opportunities to meet Donnie and the author, buy the book and get it autographed.
Allison, as well as Creed, will do book-signing sessions at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame adjacent to Talladega Superspeedway from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. They will also meet and greet fans who attend the Aaron’s 499 on Sunday, May 5, during another book-signing session to be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. adjacent to the track’s Allison Grandstand.
Donnie Allison is noted for having much success at Talladega Superspeedway, winning two Sprint Cup Series races in 1971 and 1977. From 1971-1982, he had a total of seven top-five results, including a pair of runner-up finishes (1973 &1978) at the 2.66-mile venue.
His career at TSS is well documented in the book, which was originally published in 2006. It is being republished by Skyhorse Printing, Inc. of New York City and is now available wherever fine books are sold and at Amazon.com. The second edition of “Donnie Allison … As I Recall” contains updated information, new photos, a new book jacket cover, and an additional chapter detailing Donnie’s 2009 induction into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, among other items.
Of course, no biography of Donnie Allison would be complete without a narrative of the famous last-lap crash between him and Cale Yarborough in the 1979 Daytona 500. In the book Allison talks candidly about that incident, his relationship with his brother and fierce fellow competitor, Bobby, and many other aspects of his stellar NASCAR career, including racing at Talladega.
“Donnie and the Allison family have meant so much to Talladega Superspeedway over the years, and we are always happy when we can repay their dedication to the track in some way as we are doing here,” said Talladega Superspeedway Chairman Grant Lynch. “Jimmy is a Talladega native and someone who has been a friend to our track throughout his career in the local media. We are honored to be a part of this great news.”
