Short Day For Steckly At Season Opener

Bowmanville, ON:  Scott Steckly driver of the 22 Racing/Canadian Tire Dodge started the Pinty’s presents the Vortex Brake Pads 200 from the third starting position but a crash into the turn three wall took them out early and a 24th place finish was the result.

Steckly who held the track record here going into the race weekend from his 2012 qualifying effort, practiced and qualified third quickest of the 28 car field on Saturday the first event of the 2013 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. “We found a couple of things we didn’t like with the car after qualifying and think with these changes we should be good to run up front all day tomorrow,” explained Steckly after qualifying.

When the green flag dropped on Sunday for the 200 km, 51 lap event, Steckly quickly fell into line behind leader J.R. Fitzpatrick and Steckly teammate L.P. Dumoulin.  These three drivers opened up a large gap from the rest of the field.  A short time later Fitzpatrick dropped off the pace leaving the teammates first and second.  Steckly was able to lead a lap, then ducked down pit road for fuel, a strategy the team hoped would set them up to challenge for the win at the end of the day.  Upon returning to the track, two turns later Steckly felt something wrong and the car just veered off the track and into the wall, bringing their promising day to an early end.

“I still do not know what happened out there,” said a disappointed veteran racer Steckly after leaving the medical care center.  “The car just took off and I am not sure if I hit a patch of oil or something broke but it was a hard hit.  But on a positive note Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is an incredible facility and every time we come here there are more improvements.  I can’t wait to be back in September.”

CTV, Canada’s most-watched television network broadcast the 2013 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 season opener for the first time live from Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on Sunday, May 19.

Next up for the 22 Racing Team is the Emco 200 at Delaware Speedway.  Steckly has posted two second place finishes in the only two events held here in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series in 2011 and 2012.

Scott Steckly and the 22 Racing Team is supported by the following sponsors:  Canadian Tire, Sylvania, Mobil 1, Erb Group, and Johnsonville & AW Millwrights.
