Tire Management Yields Solid Finish for Sorenson

Consistency is key in California and after a 21st place finish, Reed Sorenson and the No. 36 Tommy Baldwin Racing Chevrolet have hit their stride early into the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

Qualifying in 36th, Sorenson and Crew Chief Todd Parrott made adjustments throughout the race to get the car handling to Sorenson’s preference. Tires were a problem throughout the race and resulted in numerous cautions. With a total of nine cautions, Sorenson led his first lap of the season under yellow as Parrott made a call to gain track position.

After the final pit stop, the No. 36 Chevrolet picked up speed but because of the tire issues he and Parrott chose not to push the limit. The goal was to be easy on the tires and get the best possible finish. Staying out of trouble and maintaining his tires, Sorenson crossed the finish line in 21st.

Reed Sorenson on the Auto Club 400: “We had a better car than the result showed, but I didn’t want to chance having an issue with the tires.”

Team Owner Tommy Baldwin’s thoughts: “Reed did a really good job taking care of his car. We just needed to make it to the end.”
