Carl Edwards Takes Points Lead Heading Into Martinsville

Sprint Cup Driver Credits Team for His Success

CONCORD, Nc. (Mar.29, 2014) – After suffering a blown tire in Fontana last weekend, Carl Edwards fought back to round out the top ten and took the lead in the Sprint Cup Series standings by one point over Dale Earnhardt Jr. The Roush Fenway Racing driver has had a solid start to the 2014 season with two top-five finishes and four top-10s in the first five races of the 36 race schedule.

“It’s nice because it shows that your team is doing their job, I’m doing my job and we are making good calls,” stated Edwards’ on being the points’ leader. “It’s a good reminder that their hard work is paying off and that things are going well. I think that the points lead is a good thing for the whole team.”

The Columbia, Mo. native last held the lead in 2013 when he secured the top spot after Richmond before the points were reset for the chase.  Previously, Edwards’ led the standings for 24 out of the 36 weeks in 2011 when he tied for the Championship with Tony Stewart and was declared the runner-up due to fewer wins.

Edwards topped the standings for the first time in 2008 for two weeks in a season that was highlighted by nine victories. This year will mark Edwards’ 10th full year in the Sprint Cup Series, and fourth season that he has climbed to the top of the charts.

Tune in as Edwards tries to maintain his lead at Martinsville Speedway. The STP 500 will be televised on Sunday at 1p.m. ET .on FOX. Coverage can also be heard on MRN and SIRIUSXM NASCAR Radio channel 90.
