TEAM CHEVY QUALIFYING NOTES AND QUOTES
AUGUST 1, 2014
KYLE LARSON, NO. 42 TARGET CHEVROLET SS – POLE WINNER
“I thought it would be Joey (Logano) too. Those Penske cars are fast every weekend. To get a pole here, my first ‘real’ pole (Kyle started on the pole at Richmond when qualifying was rained out) feels great. To come to a ‘tricky triangle’ like this there is no other race track like it. It’s fun because you get to shift and hit your marks. It’s difficult so I’m glad I could win the pole it feels great. Hopefully, we can get our first career win this weekend too in the No. 42 Target Chevy.”
ON HIS FAST LAP:
“I had butterflies in that last round. I knew we had a shot at the pole after the second round. I was nervous and I hit all three corners about as good as I could, so I was really excited about that. Thanks to Target and everybody at the shop. They’re making the cars faster and faster every week and we’re getting better and better. I really think a win is coming soon maybe before the Chase starts. It’s really exciting. I got the pole at Richmond, but that was in practice. So, this is a legit pole and I’m really happy about that and it looks like a really good weekend.”
YOU WON THE ARCA RACE TWO MONTHS AGO WHEN YOU WERE HERE IN POCONO AND YOU’RE RUNNING DOUBLE-DUTY WITH THE TRUCK THIS WEEKEND. HOW MUCH IS THAT HELPING YOUR SPRINT CUP EFFORTS?
“I think any time you can get laps around here at Pocono it helps. This place is so different. Each corner is different. It really helps with your rhythm and things. We’ve been fast in every car I’ve run here so far, so that helps the confidence and I sort of like Pennsylvania more. I struggle in PA.”
KURT BUSCH, NO. 41 HAAS AUTOMATION CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 4TH
“It was a good day for the Haas Automation team. We were in position to get a pole. We had speed in practice and all the way through our three runs. We picked up time in our final run and we need to do more of that. We picked up speed on that last outing, but it just wasn’t enough. Guys beat us today and we ended up fourth. The car was just really good though. Let’s just make sure we have that balance after the happy hour tomorrow.
KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 4 MOBIL 1 CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 6TH
“I had a good (Turns) one and two. Just got in there and got a little bit too low and got the car out of the track a little bit loose in (Turn) three and had to peddle it all the way from the center out. Still a good lap. The guys have done a good job and just have to get it right for race trim now.”
AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 AMERICAN ETHANOL CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 11TH
“I don’t know I’m disappointed. I feel like the car handled as good as it could. I felt like I nailed my lap and we are fourth tenths off. I want to thank everybody at RCR they are working hard. We just have to find some speed somewhere. I do think our cars are going to race very good. It’s the best race car we have had all year. So I’m very happy with that. I don’t know how to get to that next level right there yet. We will keep working hard. I just want to thank everybody at Chevrolet and Dow for all the support. Hopefully, moving forward we can get a little more speed.”
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 17TH
LACK OF SPEED? WHAT’S GOING ON?
“The car is slow? (laughs). We’re getting there. We’re getting better. Unfortunately we didn’t make it to that next round, but there is still a practice session tomorrow and then the race on Sunday. And we didn’t have a ton of speed in qualifying when we were here in the spring race, but we raced just fine. So, we clearly wish we were faster, but that’s just how it is. We’ll go to work and try to make this Lowe’s Chevrolet faster.”
HAVE YOU GOTTEN THE LOOSENESS OUT OF THE RACE CAR?
“Yeah, I thought that was a decent lap there. At the end, it was still a little free. But, it wouldn’t lift any catch-up off the corner. I think another tenth, or tenth and a half, we would have been in the next round. But, that’s just how it goes.”
MARTIN TRUEX, JR., NO. 78 FURNITURE ROW CHEVROLET SS – QUALIFIED 19TH
“Actually the car handled well, better than it did in practice. We just didn’t have enough speed to advance to the final session of qualifying. This is something we’re going to work on during the two practices tomorrow. I still have a good feeling about this place, we just need to work out a few items, especially in the speed department.”
