Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Fastenal Ford Fusion, hit the wall during qualifying yesterday, but his crew repaired the right-rear of the car and he was eighth in the first practice session. Ford Racing caught up with Edwards to talk about his Fusion for tomorrow’s race and preparations his team is making for the Chase.
CARL EDWARDS – No. 99 Fastenal Ford Fusion – YOUR GUYS FIXED THE PRIMARY CAR FROM YESTERDAY’S QUALIFYING INCIDENT AND YOU WERE AMONG THE FASTEST IN TODAY’S FIRST SESSION. HOW DID IT FEEL? “We’re still lacking a little bit of speed, but we are more competitive. We talked about Indy being frustrating, but we’re making small gains. We moved up a little bit at Indy and I think we’re faster here yet and we just have to keep moving forward. That’s the name of the game and that’s the only thing that’s gonna get us to where we want to be, so I’m happy with the car in that practice session and hopefully it’s as good tomorrow in the race.”
YOUR TEAM IS BEING PAINTED AS AN UNDERDOG FOR THE CHASE. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? “Other people’s opinions don’t really mean much in this sport as far as performance is concerned. Right now, we’re not competitive enough to win the championship, so talking about whether or not we are doesn’t really matter. It’s simple to see every weekend from the results, so we have to do better and we know that. The good thing is that we have time and we have good, hard-working people. So if we can be better and continue to move forward, then we have nowhere to go but up.”
DO YOU HAVE A TESTING PLAN IN PLACE FOR THE CHASE? “Robbie and the guys have what I think is a good plan. The hard thing about this sport is that when it’s tough and you’re struggling it’s very tough to stick to your plan and to keep working on things you want to work on and to do it with enthusiasm, so that’s what we have to keep doing.”
