Ragan: Richmond Will Be a Wild One

CSX Says ‘Play It Safe’ but No. 34 Team Might Take Risks for a Victory

STATESVILLE, SEPT. 2, 2014 – David Ragan, driver of the No. 34 CSX “Play It Safe” Ford, comments on racing at Richmond International Speedway:

“Richmond will be a wild one with guys looking to make the Chase. If you can win, you’re in. There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it. People will be taking some risks that they typically wouldn’t take on the racetrack and even on pit road. Our CSX team will be right in the middle of it. Richmond has been a good track for me in the past with a lot of top-fives.

“As drivers, we’re always going to drive as hard as we can. But you’re going to have some crew chiefs do a no-tire stop or a four-tire stop when they typically wouldn’t, or even some guys taking a gamble and staying out to win on fuel mileage.

“If you have 15 laps to go and you come in and put fresh tires on and maybe the leaders don’t, there’s a lot of different scenarios where you could maybe steal a victory even if you’re not the dominant car. So, Richmond’s a track we look forward to.”

JUST THE FACTS: Ragan has 15 Sprint Cup career starts at Richmond International Speedway … He has three top-five finishes at the three-quarter-mile oval … His best finish at the track is third (2007) … CSX returns as primary sponsor of the No. 34 Ford with its safety message to “Play It Safe” around railroad tracks.

Don’t count out @DavidRagan at @RIRinsider. He has three top-5s at the short track. #NASCAR #PlayItSafe
