AUSTIN DILLON QUOTES:
Richmond International Raceway is a short track but it seems like it has more of an intermediate-track type of feel. Can you describe the racing there. Does it feel like a short track to you?
“It’s probably one of the biggest short tracks we go to because the restarts are so intense and you can really screw a guy getting into the corner there if you duck under him and put him into a bad spot. It’s a place where you have to be aggressive and then have a car that holds on late because that guy that you were aggressive to at the beginning, will come back and get you later in the run. A fast car makes everything easier for sure, and if you’ve got that you don’t have to worry much about Richmond. It’s a place that brings the competition really tight together.”

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:
It’s going to be a lot more intense at Richmond International Raceway with guys trying to make the Chase.
“Yeah, it’s the last opportunity to make it in to the Chase. It’s going to be crazy like it always is with short-track racing under the lights with a lot at stake. It’s going to be exciting.”
Tell me about driving this track. Everybody says it’s unique but it’s also comparable to Phoenix International Raceway or Iowa Speedway.
“It’s unique for sure. I’ve only raced Iowa once or twice and it’s really sort of boring compared to Richmond, which is multi-grooved and the tires fall off which is really good. You can bolt on tires at the end and pass cars. It really opens up strategy a little bit. You have to get the front end working, but it seems more and more lately with the way the cars are it’s “drive off” you need. The trick is you have to get your car to turn also.”
Is RIR much different at night than it is during the day?
“Yeah, we practice during the day with really long sessions then we race at night, so it’s a lot of predicting what your car is going to do at night. It changes a little bit; it generally gains more grip but doesn’t really get tighter or looser. You gain some grip which then goes away because you’re doing longer runs. There’s not a whole lot we change from day to night.”
Ryan Newman
No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet SS

Race Rewind … Newman drove Richard Childress Racing’s No. 31 Quicken Loans Chevrolet SS to a top-10 finish after a late-race restart saw the outside line stall, costing Newman two spots on the track resulting in a hard-fought, eighth-place finish.
RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:
What are your thoughts on returning to Richmond?
“Richmond is great short-track racing. It always is, it always has been. I think it is the right size track with the right amount of banking and the right shape. I think those three elements create great racing.”
You are one of the bubble drivers. What do you expect to see when it comes to racing and how will you race other drivers in your same situation?
“When you look at the racing last year, there is no doubt that people contending for a Chase spot were racing in a way to help their cause. I think everyone has learned a lot from what happened and the consequences of it all. I think you may see a very different Richmond this time around.”

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:
What is it like to race at Richmond under the lights?
“I’m excited for Richmond, it’s been a good track for us. I feel like the last two races we’ve led over 300 laps, we’ve contended for the win in both of them and finished in the top five. Obviously, that’s a place where we can go to victory lane. I feel confident with our setup, the setup we bring there and my confidence at the track. I’m excited to get there and try to finish it off.”
Do you keep a mental scorecard on tracks and where you might be due?
“Yeah, as a driver for whatever reason, you go to every single race track and you try and expect to have a fast car and want to win. No matter what, you always have places where you know have been better to you and fit your driving style better and Richmond is one of those for me. ”
Does Richmond race a lot different in the night then in the day?
“Yeah, Richmond is a cool place. It’s similar to Atlanta where the tires fall off a lot and you really have to manage your tires. You race the race track, as weird as that sounds. It’s you versus the race track, instead of you versus your competitors. The night race means speeds pick up a little bit, but you still have tire fall off and wear and you have to manage your tires.”

What did you learn in your first Richmond Nationwide Series race that you can apply to your return?
“The center of the corner is where we struggled last time. There was one run in the spring where we had strong center speed and forward drive, we ended up driving up to seventh. I know what that feel was, so I’ll to aim for that same feel in practice and hope to keep that in the race.”
Is there different feeling you have now that you’re heading back tracks for a second time?
