ADVANCE NOTES
Reed at Texas Motor Speedway
Reed has competed at Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) twice in the NASCAR XFINITY Series. In 2014, he finished 20th and 17th in the spring and fall races, respectively.
The Car
The No. 16 Lilly Diabetes American Diabetes Association team will run a chassis that was last on track at Atlanta Motor Speedway in February, where it earned a 16th-place finish. This is the same chassis that the team brought to the track in the spring 2014 event, where Reed finished 20th.
Riding with Ryan
American Diabetes Association Youth Ambassador Will Golden of Keller, Texas will ‘Ride with Ryan’ this weekend. The 12-year-old’s name will ride above the passenger-side window of the No. 16 Ford Mustang. Golden, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age eight, has not let the disease slow him down. In addition to playing soccer and basketball, Golden has made great strides in raising awareness of the disease, earning him the title of Kiwanis Junior Hero in his former hometown of Quincy, Mass.
Special Guests
Grace Chamberlain of Keller, Texas is a 16-year old high school sophomore living with type 1 diabetes. Grace and her family will attend their first NASCAR race at Texas Motor Speedway this Friday night as guests of Ryan Reed and the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes American Diabetes Association team. Grace’s journey with diabetes was shared in a New York Times documentary titled “Midnight Three & Six.’ The video can be seen here.
Fontana Recap
Reed earned an 11th-place finish at his home track of Auto Club Speedway on Saturday, March 21, 2015 after starting in the 12th position.
The team rebounded after a crash in practice on Friday and dealt with an extremely loose-handling car to start the day on Saturday to finish just outside the top-10 in the 200-lap event.
Local Connections
Shock Specialist for the No. 16 Team, E.C. Nichols, returns to his home state this weekend. His hometown of Detroit, Texas is located two-and-a-half hours from TMS.
Team Mechanic Troy Phillips also hails from Texas. His hometown of Pasadena, Texas is located just over four hours from TMS.
Reed on Texas:
“I’m excited to get our Lilly Diabetes American Diabetes Association Mustang back on track after two weekends off. I’m really optimistic going into Texas with a racecar that has the potential to win given how good we were at Auto Club Speedway a few weeks ago. Texas was one of my worst tracks last year so I’m doing as much homework as I can going into this weekend.”
