How Sweep It Was: Dale Earnhardt Jr. Takes Aim At Pocono After Winning Both Its Races Last Season
Last August, Dale Earnhardt Jr. celebrated with a broom in Victory Lane at Pocono Raceway after completing the season sweep with his second win of the year at the 2.5-mile track.
The triumph marked his third of four checkered flags collected on the season and his first sweep of a track since he won both Talladega races in 2002.
Earnhardt will attempt to start a new sweep and win his third consecutive race at Pocono in Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 (1 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1).
He can join NASCAR Hall of Famer Bobby Allison (1982 – 83) and Tim Richmond (1986-87) as the only drivers to win three straight at Pocono.
Only seven drivers have swept Pocono in its history: Earnhardt Jr. (2014), Denny Hamlin (2006), Jimmie Johnson (2004), Bobby Labonte (1999), Tim Richmond (1986), Bill Elliott (1985) and Bobby Allison (1982).
No driver has swept Pocono twice. Earnhardt, Hamlin and Johnson are all aiming to be the first.
History In The Making: Johnson Continues To Etch His Name Among NASCAR Legends
Jimmie Johnson continues to chase and make history.
Last Sunday, the six-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion won his 10th-career race at Dover International Speedway, becoming the fifth driver ever to visit Victory Lane 10 or more times at a single track. The others are all NASCAR Hall of Famers: Richard Petty (Martinsville-15, North Wilkesboro-15, Richmond-13, Rockingham-11, Daytona-10), Darrell Waltrip (Bristol-12, Martinsville-11, North Wilkesboro-10), Dale Earnhardt (Talladega-10) and David Pearson (Darlington-10).
Johnson’s Dover checkered flag also marked the 74th win of his career. He trails Dale Earnhardt by just two victories for seventh on the all-time wins list.
This season, Johnson already has four wins through the first 13 races. In comparison, last year’s wins leader Brad Keselowski did not log his fourth of six victories until the regular season finale at Richmond – the 26th race of the season.
If Johnson can capture the NSCS championship, he would join Richard Petty and Earnhardt as the only drivers with seven premier series titles.
Harvick Readies For A Win After Another Second-Place Finish
Another week, another top-two finish for Kevin Harvick.
The No. 4 Chevrolet driver has nine top-two finishes on the season – tied with NASCAR Hall of Famers Bobby Allison (1972) and Cale Yarborough (1977) for the most ever through the first 13 races of a season.
Runner-up finishes are nice, but it has to be frustrating Harvick that he’s not racking up wins.
Harvick hasn’t visited Victory Lane since taking the checkered flag at Phoenix International Raceway in March. His only other win of the season came at Las Vegas Motor Speedway the week prior.
Despite coming up just short of wins, Harvick owns a commanding 44-point lead over Martin Truex Jr. in the points standings and will try to get back to Victory Lane in Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 at Pocono Raceway – a track he has yet to conquer.
Harvick’s best Pocono finish was a runner-up showing last August.
Another eye-popping stat involving Harvick and runner-up finishes. … In the last six races Jimmie Johnson has won, Harvick has finished second.
Pocono Raceway Is Hendrick Heaven
Rick Hendrick might as well buy Pocono Raceway.
Over the past few years, his drivers have owned it, winning the last five races at the 2.5-mile track: Dale Earnhardt Jr. (2014 sweep), Kasey Kahne (2013 summer), Jimmie Johnson (2013 spring) and Jeff Gordon (2012 summer).
The last non-Hendrick Motorsports driver to win at Pocono was Joey Logano, who took the checkered flag from the pole in the spring of 2012 for Joe Gibbs Racing.
Hendrick Motorsports’ 17 victories at Pocono are the most of any race team and almost double the total of the next-best organization (Joe Gibbs Racing, nine).
Hendrick has won at Pocono with seven different drivers including Tim Richmond, Geoff Bodine, Terry Labonte, Gordon, Kahne, Johnson and Earnhardt Jr.
Richmond captured HMS’ first Pocono win in June of 1986 and returned in July to sweep the track with another victory.
Numbers Never Lie: Hamlin Has Tricky Triangle Figured Out
Pocono Raceway is one of Denny Hamlin’s best tracks.
And Denny Hamlin is one of the best to ever race at Pocono.
At least that’s what the numbers say.
Judging by his statistics, it seems the Virginia native feels right at home at the 2.5-mile Pennsylvania track. In 18 starts at the Tricky Triangle, he’s earned more wins (four), poles (three) and top fives (nine) than he has at any track besides Martinsville.
But Hamlin’s pattern of Pocono dominance transcends personal significance. His four wins are tied for the third-most all-time at Pocono, behind only Jeff Gordon (six) and Bill Elliott (five), and no active driver lays claim to more Coors Light Pole Awards there than Hamlin’s three.
Running Up Front Should Soon Lead to Finishing First for Martin Truex Jr.
Ah, how times have changed.
Just last spring, Martin Truex Jr. had to be content with a ninth-place finish at Pocono, the second of only five top-10 finishes he would collect the entire season. This year, however, a mere top-10 showing will fall short of the satisfaction No. 78 is searching for at Pocono.
Currently second in the points standings, Truex is having a standout season by any standard of measure. In 13 starts, he’s finished outside of the top-10 only once, including a stretch of seven straight top 10s to start the season. He has already led more laps in 2015 (389) than he has in all but two total seasons throughout his 12-year NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career, and more than any driver this year not named Kevin Harvick (1,123), Kurt Busch (659) or Joey Logano (464).
Although the most important column on Truex’s stat sheet remains empty (he hasn’t won since Sonoma in 2013), history suggests he’ll eventually reap the rewards of running up front as long as he can keep up the pace. In the past 25 seasons, only one driver (Jeff Gordon, 2010) has finished a full season top-four in laps led without having a win to show for it.
Larson On The Rise: Can Talented Youngster Notch First Win At Pocono?
Kyle Larson ended a four-race top-10 drought with a season-best third-place showing last Sunday at Dover International Speedway.
The No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates Chevrolet driver has struggled after entering the season with high expectations stemming from his strong 2014 campaign in which he earned Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors.
But maybe Dover is the turning point he can build momentum from.
Larson returns to Pocono Raceway – the site of his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Coors Light Pole Award – for Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners’” 400 as a legitimate threat to visit Victory Lane. He placed fifth at the Tricky Triangle after winning the pole last June and earned an 11th-place finish there last August.
Through 13 races, Larson ranks 20th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings and has accumulated one top-five and four top-10 finishes. He missed the Martinsville race in March after he fainted at the end of an autograph session the day before.
Last year, Larson finished 17th in the final NASCAR Sprint Cup Series standings on the strength of eight top fives and 17 top 10s.
If Larson takes the checkered flag this weekend at Pocono, he would become the first graduate of the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program and the NASCAR Next initiative to win at the sanctioning body’s top level.
Halfway Home: Sprint Cup Series Hits Midpoint of Regular Season
The comforting term “It’s still early” doesn’t really apply anymore – not when discussing opportunities to lock into the 2015 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
Thirteen down, 13 to go. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series regular season officially reached its midpoint as the checkered flag dropped at Dover to give Jimmie Johnson his series-leading fourth victory of the season.
It was a storyline-rich first half…
· Nine different drivers have won a race, all but locking up a spot in the Chase.
· Kevin Harvick opened the season with five consecutive finishes of second or better. Dating to the end of the 2014 season, Harvick cobbled together a string of eight consecutive top-two finishes, the longest streak since 1975.
· Johnson is closing in on a hallowed NASCAR number – 76. That’s Dale Earnhardt’s career win total, which currently is good for seventh on the all-time list. Johnson’s four wins thus far puts his career total at 74.
· After a rough 2014, Martin Truex Jr. is in the midst of a career-year. Though still searching for his first victory, Truex is second in the points and is on pace to obliterate his career-high of 19 top-10 finishes. He currently has 12.
· Through 13 races, there have been a total of 55,701 green flag passes, the second-highest total through 13 races since the inception of loop data in 2005.
Each manufacturer – Chevrolet, Toyota and Ford – has at least two victories.

Buescher Can Enjoy Off Week On Bolstered Points Cushion
In unrelenting, yet skillful fashion, Chris Buescher won the Buckle Up 200 presented by Click It or Ticket at Dover last weekend, extending his points lead to 15 points over second-place Ty Dillon and 37 points over third-place Chase Elliott. Buescher’s series career wins total now stands at three. The NASCAR XFINITY Series returns to action next week at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday, June 13 (1:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1) which lets Buescher enjoy his bolstered points cushion one extra week.
Buescher’s early success has him on track to take the title this season. In 12 starts, he has posted two wins (Iowa, Dover), six top fives, eight top 10s and an average finish of 7.5 – the best among series championship contenders.
Buescher ranks in the top 10 in every major season-to-date loop data category: driver rating (fourth-best, 100.2), average running position (fourth-best, 9.005), laps led (sixth-most, 122), number of quality passes (second-most, 576) and percentage on the lead lap (third-best, 94.06%).
Buescher’s win also qualifies him for the NASCAR XFINITY Series “Dash 4 Cash” program at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on July 25. Buescher will win an extra $100,000 if he finishes higher than Chase Elliott, Brendan Gaughan and Regan Smith at IMS.
Roush Fenway Racing: Three Wins and Counting
Roush Fenway Racing is making moves in the NASCAR XFINITY Series 12 races into the 2015 season. Ryan Reed and Chris Buescher have a combined three victories this season, the most wins in a campaign for the organization since 2012 when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (six) and Carl Edwards (one) raked in seven victories.
RFR has its entire NASCAR XFINITY Series contingent running on all eight cylinders this season – all four drivers are in the top 10 in points. Chris Buescher is the current leader, Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate Darrell Wallace Jr ranks fifth, veteran Elliott Sadler occupies the sixth spot and Ryan Reed mans the eighth position in the points standings.
Expect the good fortune to continue when the XFINITY Series returns to action at Michigan next week. RFR leads the series in wins at the two-mile speedway with five (Carl Edwards 2011, 2008; Jeff Burton 1998; Mark Martin 1995, 1993).
Show Me The Money: Regan Smith Takes Home First Dash 4 Cash Bonus At Dover
Regan Smith conquered Dover in more than one way. He earned his fifth top-five finish this season, moved up one spot in the series standings to fourth and took home an extra $100,000 as the first winner in this year’s NASCAR XFINITY Series Dash 4 Cash battle.
Smith, Chris Buescher, Chase Elliott and Brendan Gaughan all qualified for the next round of the “Dash 4 Cash” program at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday, July 25.
NASCAR XFINITY Series Hits The Big 100
For most, the first 100 days on the job is usually about getting your feet wet and getting acclimated to your surroundings. Not for the NASCAR XFINITY Series. It has already debuted a brand new trophy, two first-time winners and more passes for the lead than any season in the last decade.
· Seven winners through the first 12 races, including two first time victors (Ryan Reed & Erik Jones)
· 29 different drivers who have led at least one lap, compared to 26 at this point last year
· 304 green flag passes for the lead, the third-highest total through 12 races since the inception of loop data in 2005
Sunoco Rookie Update: Drive For Diversity Graduates Making Rookie Battle Interesting
Just 10 points separate the Sunoco Rookie of the Year points leader Darrell Wallace Jr. from second-place Daniel Suárez as the former Drive for Diversity graduates are neck and neck through the first 12 races of the season.
The two drivers have almost mirrored each other’s performances this season. When one does well, so does the other, and vice versa. This past weekend, both looked strong, but the results didn’t show it.
Wallace will spend the off weekend regrouping after he almost won the race at Dover, leading 52 laps before making contact with his teammate Chris Buescher in the closing circuits of the race relegating Wallace to a 17th-place finish.
Suárez will also be reflecting on his performance at Dover after running in the top 10 almost the entire race until a late pit road penalty solidified his 19th-place finish.
Both will face another wild card next week at Michigan when they each make their series career track debut.
NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES
Texas ‘Two’ Step: With Win No. 2, Reddick Catapults To P2 in Camping World Truck Standings
Tyler Reddick joined Matt Crafton on top of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series wins leaderboard by taking his second checkered flag of the season at Dover International Speedway.
Fittingly, Crafton and Reddick rank first and second, respectively, in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series standings. Reddick trails Crafton by 11 points.
In six starts this season, Reddick has finished lower than fifth once – a 13th-place showing at Kansas when he ran out of gas with the lead on the closing laps. The California native owns an average finish of 4.8 and boasts a 113.0 driver rating this season.
Reddick will attempt to further diminish Crafton’s points lead in Friday’s WinStar Casino 400 at Texas Motor Speedway (9 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1). The 19-year-old Ford driver has earned a 21 Means 21 pole award and a high finish of fourth at the 1.5-mile track.
Jones Owns: Sunoco Rookie Of The Year Frontrunner Tries To Continue Hot Start At Texas
Erik Jones has some fond memories of Texas.
The 19-year-old Kyle Busch Motorsports driver earned his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series victory at the track in March. Less than a year before, he made his first 1.5-mile venture in a truck at Texas, missing his high school graduation and receiving his diploma during driver introductions. He went on to finish 11th after starting fifth.
Jones returns to TMS for Friday’s WinStar Casino 400 in search of his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win of the season. Despite being unable to find Victory Lane this year, Jones has four top-three finishes and leads the NCWTS in numerous statistical categories, including: average running position (3.2), average start (3.2), number of fastest laps (239), laps led (328) and driver rating (125.6).
Jones ranks third in the NCWTS standings, trailing first-place Matt Crafton by 14 points. He leads the Sunoco Rookie of the Year race by 33 points over his teammate Justin Boston.
1.5-Mile Master Crafton Heads To Lone Star State To Defend Last Spring’s Win
It’s fair to say Matt’s mastered the “Craft(on)” of navigating 1.5-mile tracks.
The No. 88 ThorSport Racing driver has not finished outside the top 10 at a 1.5-mile track in 11 starts, beginning at Kansas in 2014, and owns three wins – Texas-1 in 2014 in addition to Atlanta and Kansas in 2015.
On Friday, he will try to tame Texas Motor Speedway – where he returns as the defending race winner and current points leader – in the WinStar Casino 400. In 28 Lone Star State starts, Crafton has one win, nine top fives (32.1%) and 17 top 10s (60.7%). He has logged a top-10 finish in 13 of his last 16 starts at TMS.
Suárez Knocking On The Door Of First Win
Daniel Suárez is due for his first NASCAR national series win.
He produced a runner-up showing at Dover last Friday and has been a model of consistency with five top-10 finishes in his five NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts this season. He owns another runner-up finish in the NASCAR XFINITY Series (Bristol).
Whether Suárez gets his first victory is more a question of “when” than “if.”
He’ll get his next shot at a checkered flag when he pilots the No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Tundra in Friday’s WinStar Casino 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. He has never made a NCWTS start at the 1.5-mile track, but finished 18th there in the XFINITY Series earlier this season after starting fourth.
With a victory, Suárez would be the first Mexico-born driver to win a NASCAR national series race.
Wild, Wild (John) Wes: Townley Ventures To Texas Trying To Continue Strong Start
John Wes Townley currently finds himself in pleasant unchartered territory.
Six races into the season, he ranks fifth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series standings for the second consecutive race.
The No. 5 Zaxby’s Chevrolet Silverado driver will attempt to continue his ascent up the NCWTS leaderboard in Friday’s WinStar Casino 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. He ventures to the Wild West with a high finish of fifth in last year’s spring race at the 1.5-mile track.
“I really like that 1.5-mile oval in Fort Worth a lot,” Townley said. “We ran really good in the truck at three tracks that size earlier this year. So, I expect us to contend for a top-five and, hopefully, the win at Texas.”
Young Returns To Home State Following Best Career Finish
Midland, Texas native Tyler Young returns to his home track (Texas Motor Speedway) after recording a career-best 10th-place finish at Dover last weekend. The 24-year-old Chevrolet driver is running in his second full-time season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and manages the day-to-day operations of his family-owned Young’s Motorsports team out of Mooresville, North Carolina. Young has made four starts at TMS in his career with a high finish of 14th last fall. In 2014, he placed fourth in the NCWTS Sunoco Rookie of the Year standings.
