Monster Energy Graves Yamaha swept the MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 races at Road America on Sunday, with Josh Hayes rebounding from a crash in Race One to take a comfortable victory the final event of the weekend.
Like Race One, Race Two began with Yoshimura Suzuki’s Jake Lewis taking the lead in Turn 1 and giving it up to Hayes in Turn 2.
Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier moved into 2nd on Lap 2, but was soon overtaken by Lewis and his Yoshimura Suzuki teammate Roger Hayden.
When Hayden ran wide, Beaubier retook the third spot, and then set out to catching Lewis. Around the halfway point of the race, Beaubier caught Lewis and they exchanged positions a few times before Beaubier secured the second spot.
With a few laps to go, Beaubier bested leader Hayes’ lap times by a tenth of a second or so, but it was not enough to cut the seconds-long gap in so few laps, and Beaubier finished second to his teammate.
RoadRace Factory’s Jake Gagne finished 5th overall, and took the win in the Superstock 1000 class, sweeping that class’s weekend at Road America.
Danny Eslick and Chris Fillmore engaged in another battle similar to Race One, only much more intense. Aboard his Honda CBR1000, Eslick managed to catch the draft off Fillmore’s KTM and make the pass for 6th place on the final straight.
Overall, Beaubier took the most championship points away from the weekend, with 1st and 2nd place finishes. Hayes, however, was the man to beat all weekend and managed to lessen the blow of his Race One wreck by climbing back to 7th in that race and winning the next.
Beaubier now sits atop the championship standings with 131 points, and Hayes trails him by 16 points. The Yamaha riders have split the wins on all six of 2015’s events so far, with three wins each.
