Richmond International Raceway and the Department of Veterans Affairs are ”Driving VA Benefits Home” This September

RIR and VA Partner for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pole Qualifying on Friday, September 11

Richmond International Raceway (RIR) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are teaming up to bring home greater awareness and access to VA benefits for our nation’s Veterans and Servicemembers.  The Department of Veterans Affairs Pole Qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series on Friday, September 11 will set the field for the Federated Auto Parts 400 “Last Race to Make the Chase” on Saturday, September 12.

“The best way to reach Veterans is to involve partners that engage Veterans in the communities where they live,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald. “Through innovative partnerships like this, we have the opportunity to reach Veterans and their families who may not realize they are entitled to VA benefits and services or who may not know where to go for assistance,” said McDonald.

Drivers will participate in three rounds of knockout qualifying during the Department of Veterans Affairs Pole Qualifying on Friday afternoon. The fastest twenty-four drivers in the first round get to move on to the second round, where the stakes are higher. Only the top 12 can move on to the third and final round. Once the clock runs out in the final round, whoever is quickest secures the number one starting position and the coveted first pit stall.

In addition to the Pole Qualifying partnership with RIR, VA will have its Mobile Vet Center onsite throughout the weekend to answer questions, share information, and help Veterans sign up for benefits and services. You’ll find the Mobile Vet Center on the Midway, along with other interactive displays, food and shopping experiences.

“Richmond International Raceway is proud to partner with such an important organization as the Department of Veterans Affairs,” said Richmond International Raceway President, Dennis Bickmeier. “NASCAR is a very patriotic sport.  And here at RIR, we pride ourselves on supporting the men and women who currently serve and have served our country.  There’s no better way to do that than by partnering with the VA to set the field for the Federated Auto Parts 400 ‘Last Race to Make the Chase.’”
