Ajax racer McColm racing NASCAR Xfinity Series in Richmond

Ajax racer to compete at Richmond International Raceway next Friday

September 3, 2015, TORONTO, ON – Joey McColm will realize a dream when he straps into a NASCAR Xfinity Series race car at Richmond International Raceway later this month.

The Ajax racer who competes full-time in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series recently announced he will drive Rick Ware Racing’s #15 Chevrolet Camaro in the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 on September 11.

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” said the soft-spoken McColm. “Things have progressed a great deal for me in the last two years, but I never expected this.”

McColm is the General Manager and one of the drivers for Canada’s Best Racing Team (CBRT). When team owner Bud Morris decided to build CBRT he hand-picked McColm to help mould his creation. They formed the team from the ground up, and in less than two years the group has competed in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series as well as the Trans-Am Series in the United States.

Through connections made working with various drivers and series McColm got a phone call he never would have expected.
“One of my competitors in the Canadian Tire Series actually helped me connect with Rick Ware,” said McColm. “DJ Kennington is a champion in our series, and he has experience in the Xfinity Series as well. Rick had an opening for the Richmond race, and DJ steered him in my direction. It is a great opportunity.

“Getting a call like this is like playing for the Toronto Marlies and being told there’s a spot on the Maple Leafs’ roster for you. It is a huge opportunity for CBRT and for our marketing partnerships.”

The opportunity for McColm to compete on such a big stage is a huge accomplishment for the young racer and for CBRT as a whole. He expects it will launch the entire CBRT organization to new heights.

McColm will enlist Kennington’s services for the race as Kennington will help mentor the Xfinity rookie and serve as his spotter during the race.

“The cars are dramatically different,” said McColm. “DJ’s experience with the radial tires and handling characteristics should make a huge difference.”
Rick Ware Racing’s number 15 Chevrolet Camaro is currently 35th in the NASCAR Xfinity Series standings.
