Brian Scott to Pay Tribute to Friend SPC John Borbonus at Coca-Cola 600

Twisted Tea Returns to Adorn the Hood of No. 44 Ford Fusion

As part of NASCAR’s 600 Miles of Remembrance program, Brian Scott will pay tribute to his friend SPC John Borbonus on the windshield of his No. 44 Twisted Tea Ford Fusion this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Scott will make his second start in the longest mileage race of the season on Sunday, honoring his friend from Boise, Idaho.

Scott most recently competed in the Coca-Cola 600 in 2014, finishing 32nd. However, he has found success in the XFINITY Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway, with two Top-Five finishes and five Top-10 finishes in 12 starts. The Coca-Cola 600 is the longest event of the season, where drivers will complete 400 laps on the 1.5-mile quad oval.

Twisted Tea returns to the No. 44 Ford team this weekend, featuring a distinctive banner with a tribute to SPC Borbonus replacing Scott’s name on the windshield. Borbonus grew up in Idaho with Scott and both attended Boise High School, as well as played lacrosse together. Borbonus joined the Army on July 16, 2005 and began training for the Special Forces as an Army Ranger.

On April 12, 2007, SPC Borbonus, a member of 4th Brigade, 25th Division’s Troop B Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition Team (RSTA), was stationed in the eagle’s nest at Patrol Base Dog, in Baghdad, Iraq guarding the south and southwest quadrants. Borbonus was manning his M240B and noticed an enemy truck speeding directly toward the patrol base’s main gate and immediately laid down a continuous stream of fire at the quickly approaching vehicle which resulted in killing the driver and stopping the truck from entering into the base’s main gate. The truck continued to coast past the gate and detonated along the wall resulting in the heroic loss of Borbonus.

Scott will also be featured on SiriusXM NASCAR’s special “Troops to the Track” broadcast with host Claire B. Lang on Sunday, May 29 at 2:30 p.m.

“You feel the 600 miles physically, mentally; it’s a long day and a long time in the racecar making laps and trying to be at your best. The track changes a lot switching from day to night, and it’s one of the most temperature sensitive tracks that we race. I feel like we have two good advantages heading into Charlotte between the All-Star Race last weekend and a Goodyear Tire test session we participated in earlier in the season. I’m really looking forward to going out and giving the home crowd a good show, and giving our shop guys who don’t travel regularly an opportunity to see the fruits of their labor out at the racetrack. I am also extremely honored at the opportunity to pay tribute to my friend John. He was a hero that saved many lives and to be able to honor his family and have him ride along with me for the 600 Miles of Remembrance is really special.”
