Ryan Reed Advances to Round 2 of the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 9, 2016) – Ryan Reed and the No. 16 Lilly Diabetes/American Diabetes Association team earned a top-15 finish on Sunday afternoon at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  With the result, Reed and team advance to the next round of the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series was on track Thursday for two practice sessions, with qualifying and the race scheduled for Friday evening.  Hurricane Matthew adjusted the schedule, pushing both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series races to Sunday.

With qualifying cancelled, Reed lined up 12th for the 200-Lap, 300-Mile race from Charlotte Motor Speedway.  As the opening run of the race progressed, Reed began to battle a Mustang that was much too loose.

Crew chief Phil Gould took the first opportunity to bring Reed down pit road under caution on Lap 27 for four tires and fuel, along with air pressure and wedge adjustments.  Reed would line up 15th for the ensuing restart.

As the next run progressed, Reed’s Mustang was once again much too free for his liking.  The loose handling condition caused Reed to drop back in the pack, to 20th-position.

When the next caution flag flew on Lap 63, Reed was in position for the free pass to get back on the lead lap.  Gould also took the opportunity to make some major adjustments on the No. 16 Ford.  Reed visited pit road during the caution period for spring rubber, track bar and air pressure adjustments, in addition to tires and fuel.

Reed lined up 20th for the Lap 69 restart and began working his way back towards the top-15.  Without a caution flag for an extended period of time, Reed and the rest of the field were forced to make green flag pit stops.  Reed came down pit road on Lap 119 for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment.

As green flag pit stops concluded, Reed found himself in the top-15, where he would continue to tick off laps until making another scheduled green flag pit stop on Lap 162.  This time, Gould called for four tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment.

The long green flag run came to an end as the caution was displayed on Lap 175.  Reed visited pit road for the last time of the day on Lap 178 for four tires, fuel and another chassis adjustment.

Reed restarted 15th and maintained that position for the remainder of the race, crossing the finish line in 15th and making the next round of the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase, which kicks off next weekend at Kansas Speedway.  Reed enters the weekend sixth on the Chase Grid.
