BRAD KESELOWSKI – No. 2 Autotrader.com Ford Fusion – WHAT HAPPENED? “I don’t know. Something happened with the 41 got loose. I don’t know if it was on his own or he got contact. Anyway, he got loose and by the time I saw it I was already making contact with him. It was kind of one of those Bristol things. I hate it because we were making improvements on the car and we had gotten up to third there and the race was kind of coming to us. We were just trying to run smart, but a bummer of an ending for the Autotrader Ford.” WHAT DID YOU SEE? “Something happened to the 41 in front of his and he got sideways. I don’t know if he had contact with Joey or if he just got loose, but once he got sideways we were already all kind of digging and I never saw him until I was in his door. It was a heavy hit. I hope Kurt’s alright. I guess maybe I hit him more in the left-rear than the door, but it’s a shame. We had been working on the Autotrader Ford and we had gotten it up towards the front. We had a lot of short run speed and we were hoping the race would play out that way at the end and we would have had a shot at it, if that was the case, but instead we’re here in the garage. We’ll try to get a finish out of it, but a bummer day for us.” HOW TOUGH WAS IT WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO USE THE TRACK BAR ADJUSTOR? “I don’t know if something broke or what. We’ll figure that out later, but the track conditions just keep changing so much that it’s hard to keep up with and we’ll do the best we can.”
RYAN BLANEY – No. 21 Virginia Tech Ford Fusion – “I don’t know what happened. I was watching the replay in there and somebody got loose. We were trying to make ground on the top and before I knew it the 20 was sitting sideways in front of me and I hit him pretty hard. It’s unfortunate. We had a really good car early and lost some spots on pit road being in bad spots and kind of lost our car a little bit halfway through, but got it back and thought we were just starting to make ground up and got in that wreck. I want to thank Virginia Tech and Ford and Motorcraft and Quick Lane for what they do. That definitely hurts, especially when you have a good car, but we’ll just go on to next week.” WHAT HAPPENED? “I don’t know who got loose and slowed everything up, but before I knew it the 20 was sideways. He got turned and I didn’t have time to check up and I hit him. That’s just unfortunate. I thought I picked the right lane and then the last minute he got turned in front of us. There was nothing I could do to miss him. I probably could have done something, but that’s the way it goes sometimes. We had a really good car early and just kind of lost track position there and then were gaining it back. I thought we were gonna be good the last 100, but just didn’t get there.” WHAT ABOUT YOUR WEEKEND OVERALL? “It stinks. We were fast all weekend and this was one of the best weekends that we’ve had. There were a couple of rough spots and unfortunately it ended rough, but we’ll just have to go on to next week, that’s all.”
CHRIS BUESCHER – No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops Ford Fusion – “That was a lot of fun. It’s been a long time since we’ve come to the race track and enjoy it like that. We had awesome speed out of our Love’s Ford Fusion. I’m really proud of the team. This thing was good from the start of the weekend. We kept working our way up towards the end and got to the top five, and almost got one there at the end, but I love Bristol. I absolutely love this race track. What they did with the surface worked out really well and made for some really good racing.” YOU’RE IN THE TOP 30 NOW. HOW DOES THAT FEEL? “I don’t know exactly where we’re at quite yet, but I know we had to get there. That’s Chase eligibility in one race out of the four we had to do it. Now, we have to hold onto it. I’m really proud of this team. Our Love’s Ford Fusion had great speed this weekend. We’re looking forward to the next handful of races. We’ve got some really good tracks for us coming up. We knew Bristol would be a good one for us. It took us a day later to do it, but we got ourselves a top-5 and had a blast out here. That was an awesome run.”
RICKY STENHOUSE JR. – No. 17 Fastenal Ford Fusion – “It wasn’t from a lack of hard work and being lucky a few times. We really wanted to get this Bryan Clauson tribute car in victory lane. It just wasn’t meant to be today. We made our car a lot faster throughout the race and came from two laps down to get back on the lead lap. We missed some wrecks and gave it all we had. I thought we were matching the 4 car there lap for lap, but he got away from us and we had to restart sixth there on that last restart, but it was an honor to drive this car. All of the fans that came out this weekend. This place was pretty packed last night. Thanks to all the fans that were able to stay around. I thought the track was really good. You could run the bottom. You could run the top. We just wanted one more spot.” WHAT DOES THIS DO FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE THE NEXT FEW RACES? “That’s all we can think about is getting ourselves a win. We’ve been OK at Michigan. We had a flat tire. We’ve been OK at Darlington and Richmond even, so we’ve got to keep our confidence in our ability to make sure we’re making all the good changes and not making mistakes, and staying with it throughout the race like we did right there. We really wanted to get that win this time at Bristol. We knew this was probably our best shot. We just struggled all weekend. It was a tough weekend from an emotional side and out here driving this race car and getting it fast, but thanks to all the hard work from my guys we were able to salvage a really good finish.”
JOEY LOGANO – No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Fusion – “It was eventful Bristol. It seems like at this race track there’s always something that happens. Whether it’s on the team side or the driver’s side it seems like that happens a lot at this race track. There was a point during the race at about lap 400 where we got to the lead with the Shell/Pennzoil Ford and we were fast. The race track was where we thought it would be and everything was kind of working as planned, and the next thing you know the 41 spun and we got some damage from that. We pitted for that and had a lugnut off the left-rear, so we came in to fix that, and then it rained and the track just changed. After it rained everything changed and the car wasn’t as fast. We got back up to 10th and I thought we were gonna drive to fifth on that last run because we were really fast the run before when the track was rubbered up, but once it cleaned up we just lost a little bit of speed.” DO YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE WAY YOU RALLIED? “Yeah, we overcame a lot. I guess that’s the positive and the bright side of it. I just kind of look at all the fireworks going off in victory lane and think about that a little bit more.” HOW DID YOU LIKE THE TRACK? “I think they added a groove in turns one and two for sure. Three and four it was somewhat better. Definitely on restarts it was better, and then it would kind of wear off and the cars would move up. It was surprising that at the end of the race there was still some left and there were a lot of cars running the bottom, so I guess that’s better if that’s what everybody is looking for. If everyone is looking at the bottom, I guess that’s better. I’m not a fan of it. I’d rather us all run the top like we used to. I thought it was really cool, but I thought it was pretty racy. You could pass cars and do things like normal, so Bristol is still cool. They couldn’t kill it. To me, this is the best race track we come to.” WHAT DID YOU SEE WHEN KURT HAD HIS ISSUE? “I was on the top and he throttled up and really what happens is you can throttle up so early in the corner, but when he came off the grippy stuff he got loose and I tried to cross back over on the other side to get underneath him and he was sideways at that point and he got our door. He didn’t get our tires, so we got lucky there, but it still caused quite a bit of damage to our car. We’re still going really fast around this race track and it definitely affected us from there.”
RICKY STENHOUSE JR. AND CHRIS BUESCHER PRESS CONFERENCE
RICKY STENHOUSE – No. 17 Fastenal Ford Fusion – “It was tough. We didn’t have the car exactly where we needed to be to start the race. We went two laps down and wasn’t real sure we were ever gonna be able to get back on the lead lap. We had some really good, timely cautions. Nick made a lot of great changes to get our car better and that was really the thing that turned us around was the good adjustments on pit road, and we made a lot of them. It was a really good team effort. I really wanted to park it in victory lane for Bryan and his family, but we just came up one spot short. I thought we were matching the 4 car lap for lap there at the end, but starting sixth he kind of stretched it out on me and I wasn’t able to really make a run at it. I’m really happy with how we ended the day. It was a tough weekend.”
HOW INVOLVED HAS CHRIS AND BOB BEEN IN TERMS OF TEAM MEETINGS AND HOW WELCOMING HAS ROUSH FENWAY BEEN TO YOUR COLLABORATION? “They’re in every single meeting. We share a lot of information. It’s awesome to start seeing it paying it off. I know they were struggling at the beginning of the year. Chris is a great race car driver. He showed that in the XFINITY Series and I think the time in the car every week and getting better with working with Bob (Osborne). It’s his first year working with him as a crew chief. They’re very, very integrated into our processes and it starts at the top. Everybody at Roush Fenway has been working hard to improve what we’re coming to the track with and that goes down to the 34 team as well.”
WHAT DOES THIS FINISH SAY ABOUT BRINGING RFR BACK TO THE TOP OF THE SERIES? “I know for me we didn’t pass all the cars out there. We didn’t pass the best of the best cars out there, but we passed some cars that were running and leading laps throughout the whole race. The 19 led some laps and ran up front, the fastest car here in qualifying, so we passed some good cars and we’ve got to look at what we were able to accomplish coming from two laps down and making our car better. I do think that some of those cars in the wreck we could have got by after making our car better, but we know we still have a lot of work to do, but this just builds confidence that we were able to get our car better throughout the race.”
IF THERE WAS A LATE CAUTION DID YOU HAVE ANYTHING FOR HARVICK? “I don’t really know. I mean, he had a lead big enough that he may not have been pressing the issue as much. I felt we were matching him in lap times lap for lap. I’d definitely have given it all I had if we would have had a restart there. Like I said the last time in here, a restart on the front row here at Bristol if you don’t give it all you’ve got and move him out of the way, whatever you need to do, you don’t really want it bad enough. We would have given it all we got and I thought we had a car that was capable of doing that. Before we put tires on when him and the 22 were battling I thought we were faster than they were lap for lap, so I definitely think we would have had a shot at it.”
DID YOU FEEL YOU HAD A SHOT AT A TOP FINISH THIS WEEKEND AND DID THE TRACK CHANGES IMPACT THE WAY YOU RACED HERE AT ALL? “I always feel confident coming to Bristol, for sure. At the start of the weekend I definitely wouldn’t have thought we’d have had a top-10 car, and qualifying wasn’t real good for us. But we didn’t really get to practice on the top because of what they did to the race track on the bottom. Everybody kind of ran down there and we ran some laps up top in practice, but it was not rubbered up and ran in enough to really say, ‘Hey, this is gonna work up here.’ We thought it was gonna work and Larson and I talked a lot about it over the weekend. We thought we could get it rolling it would be the best, and he showed in the XFINITY race that it was gonna be good. I wish going back to practice we probably needed to run up there a little bit more to start closer in the race.
RICKY STENHOUSE CONTINUED — “We weren’t very good to start the race, so that being said I thought we practiced a little different than normal with what they did to the race track. For me, I was glad the race wasn’t won on the bottom. I think this race is way better running the top. I thought what they did to the race track definitely opened up the bottom for options. I passed quite a few cars down there. I thought the 11, the 19, some of those really fast cars that got their car working could pass some good cars down there, so I thought it made it a two-groove race track for sure and definitely more interesting. I don’t think it was a bad option.”
HOW DIFFICULT IS IT DUE TO THE WEATHER TO KEEP YOUR POISE? “Unfortunately, we’ve become accustomed to it lately – the last couple years it seems like. What I was really bummed about is I thought we had a really good crowd last night. It seemed like a lot of fans were here and excited for the race and I was bummed that we just didn’t get it in. It was nice to see the fans that were able to stay, but I think a lot of fans that couldn’t didn’t get to see a great race, whether they were driving home and had to listen to it. So going in and out of getting ready, not getting ready, we were getting close to 12:30 and I was still in some workout clothes laying around in the bus thinking it was gonna rain, and it did so I got to wait around a little longer. You definitely get cooped up in the bus and want to get going.”
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE NUANCES YOU’VE PICKED UP AFTER A RACE LIKE THIS? “What Chris and Bob was able to do as a team is what this sport is about. It’s all about making the right decisions and the right calls and they nailed it at Pocono. There is a lot of people that get wins on fuel mileage or rain or rain-shortened races. I would take a win that way, but I think we as a team have to run a little bit better before we make decisions like that to really pull off a win. I think Chris will tell you that they had some really fortunate circumstances that gave them the opportunity to make that decision and stay out. It’s just the way these races work out, but even if you have the fastest car, you’re not always gonna win. You’ve got to make sure that you do everything that you can do – make the right pit calls, pit, don’t speed, make good moves on the race track and not tear up your car. It’s just so hard to win these races. If we keep putting ourselves in this top five and in the top 10, you can make different calls – like my crew chief taking two tires or things like that to leapfrog some people and get that track position, maybe start in the lead and then maybe I could have held the 4 off. It’s just a product of learning.”
SO IT’S AS MUCH ABOUT AVOIDING LOSING? “I don’t know. As drivers we put it all out there and run every lap like we’re qualifying. To be the best in this series you can’t take a lap off. Here at Bristol you’ve got to put it up next to the wall and you’ve got to gas it up. My right arm was almost going numb. I was so tensed up making sure I hit my marks every single lap there at the end. We run as hard as we can to win, and I’m just saying that if you’re running better, then you have more options as a team to make better calls and make more daring calls, I guess, and win some races.”
WILL YOU PLAY A ROLE IN BRYAN’S SERVICE WEDNESDAY? “It’s been all over the place in getting everything organized, but I’m sure I will. We’re gonna get there and I think it’s gonna be cool starting around 1 o’clock we’re gonna have friends and family tell good stories that we had with Bryan throughout the years. That will start at 1 o’clock and then they’re actually gonna have a race at Kokomo, so hot laps will start at 6:30 and then a friends of ours that was gonna play Bryan and Lauren’s wedding is actually gonna play after the race for all the fans and friends that are gonna be out there. Kokomo was Bryan’s favorite place to race every Sunday night, so it will be special.”
RICKY STENHOUSE CONTINUED — WHAT HAS THIS ROLLERCOASTER BEEN LIKE THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS? “I’m telling you that Saturday night watching the race from Belleville as soon as it happened I texted our agent that he needed to figure some things out before anything was announced. I watched it. The ambulances hadn’t even got there and I went ahead and told him that he needed to figure out a way to get to Kansas because I just had a feeling that it wasn’t good. So it started Saturday night and went through obviously a rollercoaster that whole night. I was getting updated throughout the night. I was up until about 2 o’clock, 2:30 that morning talking to him and trying to figure out what was going on. It’s definitely been tough, but I think going to Knoxville and being with his family, being with his fiancé, and being with friends that we all had a great time together talking about it, talking through things and talking about all the good things that Bryan did and his organ donation really helped a lot of us really feel comforted with what he was still doing after the fact. The service Thursday this past week was one of the toughest days that I think I had, but, again, just being there and telling stories really helped us all get through it. His fiancé, Lauren, has been a rock. She’s supporting everybody even though you think it would be the other way around. She’s really helped a lot of people, so we’re really looking forward to getting there Wednesday, and, again, just being with all the racing family that we were able to always be around. I know Bryan was watching and wanting us to win tonight, and we gave it all we had. He was trying to run 200 races. Somebody asked me, ‘How do you feel coming here and racing?’ And talking with Tim, Bryan’s dad, he was like, ‘Man, I feel like Bryan’s probably mad at me right now because I’m not at home working on a midget to get it ready to go racing,’ because Bryan, all he wanted to do was race and that’s what he was doing and leading one of the biggest races of the year. If he had to choose a way to go out, I feel like that was the way he wanted.”
WHO WAS HERE TODAY? “Lauren and her mom and dad were here. Tim did not come, and Bryan’s family. But they came and just hung out all day on Saturday throughout the day around the motorhome. I was like, ‘Rain delays are good for some things.’ We all got to hang out together and spend some more time together and that definitely has been helping us a lot the last couple of weeks.”
CHRIS BUESCHER – No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops Ford Fusion – “I’m glad we finally got it in. It’s a pretty awesome weekend for our Love’s Fusion. We started off the weekend on the right foot. We’ve had speed off the truck. We’ve been hanging in there. Our mock runs in late practice were not fun. I felt like I was all over the place and we got to qualifying and had really good speed. Our best qualifying effort of the year. We started the race last night and got shuffled back a little bit on the start. I had some ideas that we were gonna change when we got to the competition caution and we fortunately got a lot of time to sit down in the trailer and talk with Bob and the whole team just about what we were gonna do when the competition caution came out with whatever lap that ended up being today. But once we started adjusting on it we definitely started heading in the right direction. Our Ford was awesome on long runs. It would fire off about two or three laps it would take to get rolling and it was tough for those couple, and then we were able to move around. We were still able to go to the bottom and pass there later in runs, which I thought was really good. I felt good about our car. We came really similar to where we left off the spring race at Bristol. We had really good speed there last time and it carried over pretty well even with the changes on the track and the VHT and rosin sprayed down. I was really happy with it. I think the track changes made for some great racing. I don’t think it’s a dominant bottom groove, but it gave us options and gave us somewhere to go to pass lapped cars. It gave us a line to run for restarts. No longer were you doomed to be on the bottom like we were last time here. The top still rolled pretty good on that initial jam up, but a different way of restarts playing out for sure than the last time here. So that was fun and I told the guys that’s the most fun I’ve had since Kentucky earlier this year. I’m proud of the effort they put in. I know it’s tough to sit around here all day. It’s pretty awesome for the tons of fans that did stick around and hung out with us. I know it was pretty miserable just watching them sit up there in the rain last night, so I’m happy a lot of them stuck it out and stuck around to watch us put on a show. It was a blast, so I’m glad we pulled it off and now we’re looking at the next couple to go do more of the same thing.”
DID YOU EVER THINK BIG PICTURE WITH FIVE TO GO WHEN YOU’RE BATTLING AUSTIN AT THE END? “I wasn’t planning on messing up if I got next to him, but it was one of those things where we could catch him and then mess up a corner and get a little bit of gap, and then we got back to him there. I think the 19 and someone else was behind us and they were within a couple car lengths, so I didn’t want to go to the bottom and give those two cars a chance to pass us and lose two points that easily. So I wanted to make sure that we had more time, so I was pretty focused ahead. I never looked in the mirror the last run and pretty much waited on DK to tell me that we had a little bit of wiggle room that we could go out there and try something, and it didn’t come until about five to go. We got to his bumper and we could roll up to him in the center and got off a little better, but at that point in the run we were just a little bit too far on tires to be able to make the pass work on the bottom. I meant to go one lap earlier and they said ‘white flag’ and that happened to be the lap that I was planning on going to the bottom, so I missed it a little bit. My timing was a little off. If the start-finish line would have been on the backstretch, we’d have been in good shape, but that’s not the case. It was fun though. It was good race. I’ve raced with Austin a lot, all the way back to Legends car days and some ARCA stuff and plenty of XFINITY, so we’ve always been able to race each other clean. We never touched for those last 20-30 laps and it was fun to be right there with him trying to get that one extra point.”
CHRIS BUESCHER CONTINUED — WHAT DOES A FINISH LIKE THIS SAY ABOUT YOUR CHANCES IN THE CHASE? “It was a pretty big day for us. We’ve had really strong days at the track and we’ve had a lot of bad luck. Obviously, at Pocono we had some really good luck. It’s been a rollercoaster ride of a season and because of that we’re having to talk about racing for that top 30 place in points, and I know everybody can say the same thing. Everybody can pick out a handful of races and say, ‘If it weren’t for those they would be in a lot different situation.’ I guess I’m focused on what ours were, but nonetheless where we’re at right now our last several months we’ve been showing up with a lot of speed. We’ve had some races this year that we’ve been really good and some of the race tracks we’re gonna go to in the Chase, some of the mile-and-a-half stuff has been really good for us. The worn-out race track, the older asphalt – Atlanta, Fontana, Darlington is my favorite track. It’s not in the Chase, so we’ll see what plays out there, but I think it’ll be good to help get us in the Chase a little bit more comfortably. From my standpoint, and Front Row Motorsports has been working extremely hard. We’ve been sharing all we can to try and find speed each and every weekend. Bristol was good for us in the spring. We had really good speed here and I was happy with that, and the one-upped themselves. They came here with an even better piece and we stayed out of the accidents. We played it smart today and ran against the fence, but with a buffer to make sure we didn’t get up in the marbles, didn’t cut a tire down, didn’t push sheetmetal in on a tire – anything that could go wrong we avoided other than me sliding a little bit close to the inside wall on a pit stop. So for the most part a mistake-free day that led to a really good run, but we had the speed to be able to pull it off with it. We were able to move forward every restart and that was a lot of fun.”
CAN YOU WORK THE BALANCE OF NOT BEING TOO AGGRESSIVE AND STILL TRYING TO GET THE POINTS YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR SPOT? “In the grand scheme of things we’re always coming to the race track to try and win, and not make mistakes and get the best finish possible, so you can still be aggressive and try to get all you can. If you mess up a little bit and you lose a couple spot, so be it. If you wreck a race car, it ruins your day and ultimately it will ruin your points situation. Just because of points being where they’re at doesn’t mean we have to go and just focus on that aspect. We came to Bristol knowing that we had speed, that we love this race track and it was a good chance for us to go out and have an awesome run, and that’s exactly what we were able to do. Points will fall however they will. You can’t focus on them too much because you lose sight of what the main goal is and that’s to go out and win races. Trying to get to that point and we were competitive here at Bristol. We weren’t quite a winning car, but we were every bit of a top-5 car and should have been a little bit better there at the end – could have been a little bit better there at the end. We’ve got to be aware of it, but we’re still gonna be aggressive with our racing style. We’re not here to just lay over and be conservative. We’re going out for good finishes to stretch that points to be comfortable at Richmond.”
HOW NICE IS IT TO HAVE A BUFFER AT PLACES WHERE YOU MIGHT HAVE MORE HORSEPOWER THAN THE BK RACING CARS? “We look at the next couple of race track and obviously Roush Yates horsepower is always awesome. They’re always extremely reliable and we’re able to get to the finish every time. Looking ahead, horsepower is always gonna be a big part of it, but we’ve won a lot of races going to the track intentionally 40-horsepower down to be able to hook up for forward bit, so at the same time, like you said, Michigan is a big one. It’s an extremely large aero track as well, so that’s really important. We had good speed there earlier this year. I’m excited to get back there and consider it a home track for Ford, so there’s always a little bit added pressure there just from that side of things, but we’re also going there to stretch the points lead. That’s a place where we can definitely gain a little bit, and at least keep even so I’m excited for that one. Darlington is my favorite track that we go to. I absolutely love that place. Bristol is in my top three, so hopefully it all works out and that translates to another good run there.”
CHRIS BUESCHER CONTINUED — HOW MUCH HAS FORD PERFORMANCE PICKED UP ITS INVOLVMENT WITH YOUR TEAM TO HELP YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE NOW? “The great thing is Ford Performance has been committed from the start. They’ve gone through a lot of changes in the last little bit and they’ve been all-in. They made it very clear at the beginning of the season talking with everybody over there that we’re out here to win a championship and to get wins and run up front, and that’s the goal for every Ford out there on the race track. We come to these next handful of races and obviously we have a really good shot at making the Chase now, so we’re working hard to utilize every resource available now and make sure that we take advantage of it to make sure we make the Chase because ultimately that’s a step in the direction of a championship. Like Ricky was saying, from the Ford camp side we know we’ve got a little bit of work to do yet and we all know who has been dominant at a lot of these tracks this year and we’re working to get ahead of that group. As we look at the rest of the year it’s not just to the Chase, we’ve got to work all the way through Homestead to keep improving, to make sure that we’re in a good spot to try and win championships, win more races and definitely be ready for next year to give it everything we’ve got to be more competitive from the very start of the season.”
WHAT ABOUT RICHMOND? “I left that one out on purpose. I guess Richmond has to grow on me a little bit still. For whatever reason that one has been tough on me always. It’s just totally been a tough race track. I’m excited that we have figured out some stuff in the past nine or 10 weeks that has translated over to a lot of different race tracks, and I think it’s definitely something that will translate over to Richmond as well. That gives me a good confidence boost that we’ll be able to go there with something better than we had the first race. It’s a different kind of race track. I know a couple of the drivers have kind of hinted that this VHT and this style of adding grip to a race track might be something we go look at for other race tracks, but from my standpoint the Richmond race we were all the way at the top and all the way at the bottom. It’s a fun race track, I’ve just got to run better there. We look at the two coming up we’ll make sure that we can stretch out all we can get to give us a little buffer at Richmond, but I expect to be competitive at Richmond this time around. What we’ve learned over the past several months has picked up huge at every race track we’ve been able to go to, and I don’t expect Richmond to be any different.”
