Kahne at Atlanta Motor Speedway: By the numbers… In 10 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) starts at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS), Kahne has proved impressive with one pole (2010), four top-five and seven top-10 finishes. He has 95 laps led with an average start of 11.2 and an average finish of 8.9.
In NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition at AMS, Kahne is credited with two wins (2006 and 2009), two poles (2006 and 2011), six top-five and eight top-10 finishes. He has a total of 328 laps led with an average start of 9.1 and an average finish of 18.3.
Kahne’s In the Loop at AMS… The fact that AMS is one of Kahne’s better tracks is markedly indicated by his statistics there. He is ranked in the top-10 in all of the NASCAR Loop Data Categories and in the top-five in a number of them as well including Average Running Position (6th), Driver Rating (5th), Fastest Drivers Early in a Run (5th), Fastest Drivers Late in a Run (4th), Fastest Laps Run (4th), Fastest Laps Run (3rd), Fastest on Restarts (4th), Green Flag Passes (3rd), Green Flag Speed (4th), Laps in the Top-15 (2nd), Laps Led (5th), Speed by Quarter (3rd), and Speed in Traffic (4th).
Who’s on the pit box?… Trent Owens, who has led James Buescher and Nelson Piquet Jr. to NNS victories this season, has recently taken over as crew chief for the No. 38 Great Clips team with drivers Kahne and Brad Sweet. A former driver himself, Owens is a long-time fixture in the NASCAR garage. Over the years, the Darlington, S.C., native has been successful working with a variety of drivers with different levels of experience and has visited victory lane with both rookies and veterans alike including Buescher, Piquet. Jr., Mark Martin, Dave Blaney and Reed Sorenson.
This Week’s Impala… The No. 38 team will unload chassis TMS-329 this weekend at AMS. This is the same chassis in which Kahne captured the pole at the inaugural NNS race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. In that event, Kahne ran in the top-10 for a majority of the day until he was forced to pit unexpectedly for a tire going down in the closing laps. He went on to finish 25th.
Kahne and Sweet: a unique combination… Not only are Kahne and Sweet good friends off the track, but the veteran is serving as mentor to Sweet as he makes the transition from open-wheel competition to stock cars. Sweet was handpicked by Kahne in 2008 to drive for Kasey Kahne Racing (KKR) where he has since experienced tremendous success in the World of Outlaws Series. Sweet will continue to compete on a limited basis for KKR when he is not behind the wheel of the No. 38 Great Clips machine in the NNS. You can expect Kahne to be very involved and present in the NNS garage when Sweet is behind the wheel of the No. 38 as he will closely monitor his progress and offer encouragement.
Kahne brought Great Clips their first win! From 2003-2005, Kahne and his sponsor, Great Clips, Inc., reached momentous milestones, including capturing Kahne’s first Nationwide Series victory in 2003 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. It was also Great Clips’ first win as a primary sponsor. In 2005, Kahne captured his second career win at Texas Motor Speedway before leaving the Nationwide Series to allow more time for his Sprint Cup Series efforts.
Great Clips goes racing with the World of Outlaws in 2012! Great Clips will serve as sponsor for KKR driver Joey Saldana for the 2012 World of Outlaws season. The Minneapolis-based company has been a sponsor of KKR for the past two seasons. This year, they will be featured on all three KKR entries – as a primary sponsor on the #9 with Saldana as well as associate sponsor placement on Brad Sweet’s #49 and Cody Darrah’s #5 World of Outlaws cars.
12 Years and Counting… Great Clips, Inc. is currently the longest-running sponsor in the NNS and has used the Nationwide Series as their primary marketing platform for the last 11 years. Their sponsorship began in 2000 with Akins Motorsports as they climbed on board to sponsor the team’s No. 38 entry with driver, Christian Elder. Mark Green piloted the No. 38 for one season before general manager, Doug Stringer, hired up-and-coming talent, Kasey Kahne, thereby solidifying Great Clips’ commitment to their NASCAR sponsorship.
Kahne on racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway
“Atlanta is my favorite track. Your car may be good on the bottom early in the race, but as the track changes, the car may work better up top. It’s important to move around to make sure you are running the quickest line. A line that didn’t work early may be the right line later in the race. The racing is exciting and the speeds you carry there just make it that much more fun. We had a great run last weekend at Bristol, which was my first time working with Trent Owens (crew chief) and his guys. I think the chemistry there is good and I can see a win for Great Clips being right around the corner.”

No. 31 BRANDT Chevrolet News and Notes
Weekend Rewind: Bristol II – Even though the entire team was riding a wave of momentum after their win in Montreal, Justin Allgaier and the BRANDT team had their hopes for a good finish in Bristol dashed, just six laps into the race. A track he knows well and has had prior success at, Allgaier looked to Bristol as a place he could continue his progress in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) championship hunt. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be as Allgaier was relegated to a 30th-place finish after the early incident.
Allgaier at Atlanta – Allgaier has made three previous starts at the fast, 1.54-mile Atlanta Motor Speedway. In those starts, he owns one top-10 finish with two laps led. Allgaier has an average starting position of 22.3, with an average finish of 12.0.
Allgaier Attends Farm Progress Show – To start off the race week, Allgaier returned to the Midwest with BRANDT CEO, Rick Brandt to attend the 2012 Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa. In addition to signing autographs for the show’s attendees, Allgaier joined Brandt in presenting a $250,000 check to the Red Cross on behalf of America’s farmers.
Intermediate Track Stats – In the past 10 races at 1.5-mile, or intermediate, tracks, Allgaier is ranked third among his NNS peers in points scored with 353. The Illinois-native boasts two top-fives, six top-10s and six laps led, as well as an average start of 12.6 and average finish of 9.0 in those 10 races.
This Week’s Impala – This weekend, Allgaier will drive TMS-327 in the NRA American Warrior 300 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This car was previously raced at Kentucky Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Allgaier finished fifth and eighth, respectively.
Allgaier on returning to the fast Atlanta track:
“This BRANDT team is anxious to put last weekend in the rearview mirror and focus on what we need to do this weekend in Atlanta. This track is just so fast and we can carry speeds of over 200 miles per hour into the corners. I love it. Atlanta is such a fun place to race and we get to do it at night again which as I’ve said before, I really enjoy. The opportunity to race in Atlanta is a great way to kick off the Labor Day weekend and I can’t wait to get back on track and get the ship righted as we attempt to make up ground in the championship hunt.”

Headed to the Peach State… The NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) travels south to Atlanta Motor Speedway for this Friday night’s NRA American Warrior 300. James Buescher returns to the seat of the No. 30 Chevrolet Impala for the first time since Chicagoland Speedway in July. This will be Buescher’s first race in a Nationwide car at the 1.5-mile Georgia track, but The Texan has two previous NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) starts at AMS, completing 100% of the scheduled laps in both of those events on his way to earning one top-10 and an average finish of 12th.
Another Debut… Turner Motorsports welcomes Central Wire to its roster of partners as they make their on-track debut in Atlanta on Buescher’s NNS and NCWTS entries. Central Wire manufactures quality stainless steel wire, nickel alloy wire, and related products in alloys tailored to meet specific customer requirements. With manufacturing locations strategically located throughout North America Central Wire provides the widest range of stainless steel, nickel alloy, copper alloy, brass alloy, bronze alloy and zinc alloy wire products for the North American and global marketplace.
Atop the Box… Atlanta Motor Speedway will be the first race in which Buescher and new No. 30 crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. team up. Hillman Jr. has been an accomplished crew chief in the NCWTS since 2005, calling the shots in 185 races and earning 19 wins, 81 top-five finishes, 107 top-10 finishes, eight poles and two championships (2006 and 2010, both with Todd Bodine) Hillman Jr. has been atop the box for two NNS races in 2012: Road America with Miguel Paludo and Bristol Motor Speedway with Nelson Piquet Jr.
This Week’s Impala… The No. 30 team will unload chassis TMS-332 this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. This is a brand-new Chevrolet Impala which will see its first track time on Saturday.
Buescher on this weekend’s NNS race at Atlanta
“I’m really looking forward to getting back into a Nationwide car for the first time since Chicagoland in July. This will be my first Nationwide race at Atlanta, but I know from the races I’ve done in the Truck Series that it’s a fast, wide-open racetrack. It has a lot of grooves for two and three-wide racing. Tires wear out fast there, so there’s a lot of slipping and sliding. It’s a fun place to race in a truck and our team has been strong at the mile-and-a-half tracks, so I’m hoping to have a really good race.”
