Riding Momentum Kade Brown Returns to Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour Aiming for Victory

HUDSON, N.C.: Fresh off an impressive victory this past weekend at Orange County (N.C.) Speedway in the prestigious Orange Blossom Shootout, teenage phenomenon Kade Brown returns to the Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour looking to keep his momentum rolling in Saturday night’s Blue Ridge 250 at Tri-County (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

Rewinding a week, the recently crowned Hickory Motor Speedway Late Model champion added another trophy and checkered flag to his collection at Orange County.

Brown took advantage of a strong race car and maximized patience throughout the race to find himself in a side-by-side battle for the win, with Brown edging ahead and winning the $17,500 purse by 0.042 seconds.

The young gun hopes to continue his winning ways outside Granite Falls and deliver his first career CARS Tour triumph.

“We had the best race car by a long shot, but at a place like Orange County, it’s so hard to make a pass work,” Brown recalled his performance in the Orange Blossom Shootout.

”I definitely learned a lot for future races, and I am excited to see what the rest of the 2023 racing season has in store for myself and my Matt Piercy Racing team.”

With the penultimate Solid Rock Carriers CARS Tour race on deck this weekend, Brown wants to continue to earn the respect of his competitors – while turning heads in the grandstands and the garage.

Finishing 11th in the August running of the Grand Atlantic Resort Old North State at Tri-County, Brown returns to the legendary short track looking to capitalize on his summer performance while battling the best in Late Model Stock competition.

“I really feel like you have to treat Tri-County a lot like Orange County,” explained Brown. “The tracks have similar characteristics where tire conservation is pivotal to success and patience is a premium. As we dive deeper and deeper into the CARS Tour season, the competition is fierce, and everyone wants to end the season on a high note, us included.

“I learned a lot in August and plan to utilize that experience from this summer, plus take the knowledge I’ve been able to inhale throughout the year and lay it all on the table on Saturday night.”

It has been a relatively good month for Brown.

Before focusing on the Orange Blossom Shootout, Brown was one of over 80 entries for the historic ValleyStar Credit Union 300 last month at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

With continued confidence and support from his Matt Piercy Racing team and mentoring from former NASCAR driver Damon Lusk, Brown embraced his inaugural running in the nation’s biggest, richest, and most prestigious NASCAR Late Model Stock Car race by delivering a strong seventh-place finish and an entire notebook.

With the racing season winding down, Brown looks to continue a strong trajectory and maintain his recent successes, including a respectable 12th-place CARS Tour result at South Boston (Va.) Speedway earlier this month.

“The competition in the CARS Tour is no joke,” added Brown. “Every CARS Tour race, we strive to fight for the win – like every other team, but at this point in my racing career, coming away from the race track with a solid finish and the car in one piece is a bonus.

“We came close to a CARS Tour victory in July at Hickory Motor Speedway with a second-place finish, and I’d love nothing more than to have an opportunity to challenge for the win either this weekend at Tri-County or in a couple of weeks at Caraway.”

ValAsta, Carolina Driveline, Race City Steel and Puryear Tank Lines will be the primary partners on Brown’s No. 23 Chevrolet for the 125-lap race.

“Without my partners, I realize that Tri-County and the 2023 season would not be possible,” explained Brown. “This season has been a lot of fun with all the trips to Victory Lane, but without the support of ValAsta, Carolina Driveline, Race City Steel and Puryear Tank Lines, I realize none of it would be possible.

“There is no better way to thank them than by just putting our team in a position to bring home another checkered flag.”

Sharing the track with the two CARS Tour divisions for the Blue Ridge 250 will be the GXS Street Stock Series, which previously ran with the PLM Tour at Tri-County Motor Speedway back in May. Gary Ledbetter took home a checkered flag in the series’ inaugural event.

The 50-lap GXS Street Stock Series race will be sandwiched between the PLM Tour and LMSC Tour features. FloRacing has coverage of all the on-track action starting at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 21, 2023.

GMG Racing Rolls Out IMSA Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup Season-High Three Entries for Circuit of The Americas Finale

  • Kyle Washington Looks to Continue Porsche Single-Make Series Podium Success in the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in IMSA Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America Finale
  • Blake McDonald Set for Second Porsche Carrera Cup Race with GMG Racing after Solid Debut at Rennsport Reunion in the No. 11 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
  • GMG Racing Founder and Principal James Sofronas Returns to Pro Competition in No. 14 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup

AUSTIN, Texas (October 20, 2023) – GMG Racing brings its biggest IMSA Porsche Deluxe Carrera Cup North America entry of the season to the 2023 series finale this weekend at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) where America’s premier single-make Porsche series will be a featured support race for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. The Saturday and Sunday 40-minute Carrera Cup sprint races on the 3.4-mile COTA Grand Prix circuit will see GMG field a trio of 992 Carrera Cup entries to close out the team’s 2023 professional racing season on a high note.

Longtime GMG driver Kyle Washington will be looking to continue a recent run of podium success in Porsche single-make series competition in the Pro-Am class in his No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Blake McDonald runs with GMG Racing for the second-straight Carrera Cup weekend after a strong series debut last month at Rennsport Reunion in the No. 11 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

In more than a month of nearly non-stop competition starting in early September, Washington and GMG Racing have run a packed mix of both IMSA Carrera Cup Pro-Am and multiple 992 and 991 races in the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America series. The hectic schedule of 10 races on a pair of race weekends at both Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca produced an amazing run of nine podium showings and counting for Washington and GMG heading to COTA.

“Kyle runs flat out in a full schedule of racing all of the time and I have been very impressed with his recent pace and performance,” said GMG Racing Founder and Principal James Sofronas. “He is literally jumping from 992 Carrera Cup cars to 991 Porsches and then back to 992 Sprint Challenge cars and not missing a beat. In fact, if he wouldn’t been taken out by another competitor in the second Carrera Cup race at Rennsport Reunion, Kyle would be a perfect 10-for-10 in Porsche series podiums over the last month or so. He has never driven better and I only see it improving.”

Third-place showings have anchored Washington’s podium haul which has been highlighted by a second-place run in the opening Sprint Challenge 992 race in early September at Laguna Seca and another runner-up result in the first Sprint Challenge 991 race at IMS earlier this month.

Ironically, the only race weekend Washington has missed recently in his busy schedule was the Sprint Challenge weekend at COTA in late August.

“I had some family obligations I wasn’t going to miss last time around so I am really looking forward to getting back to COTA,” Washington said. “That track is sick. It’s just so flowy, with elevations. It’s nice and new. It’s got to be one of the best tracks in the world. It’s really amazing with the Carrera Cup coming there, with the fans for Formula 1, the energy is going to be electric.”

McDonald runs his second career Carrera Cup weekend with GMG after the strong debut at Rennsport Reunion at WRLS. Sofronas and the team have worked closely with McDonald since he purchased a Porsche 911 GT2 RS from GMG Racing over two years ago.

“We knew Blake would be ready for Carrera Cup at Laguna Seca and he proved it,” Sofronas said. “At his young age, he was classified in the Pro category and runs in that class again at COTA, but we knew from his very first laps he was up to the challenge of being thrown into the deep end of the pool straight out of the box. He learned a lot in his debut and we will certainly build on that this weekend in Austin.”

An accomplished race and championship-winning driver in his own right, Sofronas wheels GMG’s third Carrera Cup entry this weekend in the Pro-Am class in the No. 14 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Sofronas runs his first professional race weekend since sustaining a back injury in a test session incident this past summer. Always in ready-to-race shape and fit at 55 years-old, Sofronas has made an ahead-of-schedule recovery.

“I actually made my first start in the Flacht Cup race for fairly modern Porsche GT cars during Rennsport Reunion but that race was cut short but an early incident,” Sofronas said. “Luckily I made a move for third right at that start just before the yellow flag, and getting on the podium and racing a little was just enough to make me want more. Carrera Cup at COTA will be the last chance for a professional race this year, so we jumped at it, and adding another car is never an issue. We have run up to seven competitive entries on some race weekends in 2023, and COTA will be a springboard into 2024 for what will be another full year of Porsche-spec racing in multiple series with multiple cars. Our engineering partners from Germany with Super Cup experience will be in full force and we are rolling out our upgraded hospitality and customer experience space. We are ready for 2024 and in many ways treating this weekend at COTA as the first event of next year.”

On track Carrera Cup action is underway at COTA today with a morning practice session. Following qualifying Saturday morning at 8:35 a.m. CDT, the weekend’s first 40-minute race starts that afternoon at 2:10 p.m. CDT. Sunday’s concluding 40-minute sprint at 10:50 a.m. CDT is the final race before that afternoon’s featured Formula 1 U.S. Grand Prix.

Both Carrera Cup races can be viewed live at www.IMSA.com.

He has delivered one top-10 finish in his previous two efforts. His track-best result occurred during the 2021 spring edition of the Contender Boats 250 when Moffitt steered to a Homestead best of seventh after starting sixth for Our Motorsports.

In addition to his previous two Xfinity Series races, the popular driver also owns three NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts at Homestead and two NASCAR Cup Series starts driving for Front Row Motorsports.

Brett Moffitt Xfinity Series Speedway Stats: At NASCAR Xfinity Series tracks classified as a speedway, Moffitt has made 56 starts throughout his career, earning one pole and 19 top-10 finishes. He also holds an average finishing position of 15.6.

On Homestead-Miami Speedway: “It’s hard to imagine there are just three races left on the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule. I am looking for a quick reset with our AM Racing team after a few frustrating races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL and last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“I know we have the speed in our No. 25 Ford Mustangs. We have proven that all year long. We can unload strong and keep tweaking our No. 25 AM Technical Solutions Ford Mustang throughout practice, qualifying, and the race.

“Me and Joe (Williams Jr., crew chief) have enjoyed some prior success together at Homestead with a top-10 finish in 2021, and I’d love nothing more than to capture our 10th top-10 finish of the season on Saturday afternoon.”

On The 2023 Season: “We are just three weekends from the conclusion of the NASCAR Xfinity Series season, and I’d love nothing more than to close it out with a stack of top-10 finishes with our AM Racing team.

“It’s officially the homestretch and the final three races of 2023. I’d love to recover from the frustration of the ROVAL and Las Vegas and put us back in the top-10 where we know we belong

“From Homestead, it’s onto Martinsville and Phoenix. There is much to be desired over the season’s final races and to end the year on a high note.”

JESSE LOVE AIMS FOR ANOTHER HISTORY MAKING PERFORMANCE IN OPEN WHEEL SHOWDOWN

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (October 19, 2023) – 18-year-old 2023 ARCA Menards Series champion Jesse Love will aim to add another notch to his history making career when he competes in the $10,000-to-win Midget portion of Davey Hamilton, Jr.’s Open Wheel Showdown, racing into the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on December 1-2.

Love holds the distinction as the youngest overall champion, at age 13, in the storied history of the Bay Cities Racing Association Midgets in 2018. He also served as one of the final combined dirt and asphalt Midget champions in the history of the sport. Love’s career progression includes two 51FIFTY Jr. Late Model Series championships at Madera Speedway, a USAC Ford Focus Midget championship in 2017, and two ARCA Menards Series West crowns. His crowning championship in his development as a driver came this season as the 18-year-old notched ten wins on the way to the ARCA Menards Series national title.

“It should be awesome! I’m looking forward to going to be a big pavement race,” Love said “In open wheel we don’t get to see a lot of it and I wasn’t around during the glory days of it. Shoutout to the Hamiltons for putting it on. It takes someone like that to get this ball rolling and get pavement back where it should!”

A familiar pairing will reunite with Love driving for engine builder and car owner Tres Van Dyne after winning the BCRA championship together. Love will return to the seat of a pavement Midget, a division he recognizes as one of the best in the sport.

“I’ve had a lot of success with Tres and looking forward to rekindling that relationship. I feel really confident in my Van Dyne Midget motor and I know Tres is proud of it. The Midget cars are so beautiful and the best looking cars there is. It’s the most fun car to drive and the racing is always pretty intense,” Love said.

Love will be one of the few drivers in the Midget field with experience at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with 16 starts at the .375-mile oval and two wins in the USAC Ford Focus Midgets. He has also scored two podiums in three starts there in the ARCA Menards Series West.

“It’s a really unique track and people think it’s just paint the bottom. But the last time I won the race we kind of ran the middle,” Love said. “Obviously at Las Vegas you’d never run the top at a track like that. I was able to run a second or third groove to carry momentum however. It’s still for the most part can be a two lane race track. It looks cookie cutter but it’s very technical. There’s a lot of grip on the paint and it’s a really fast track for a pavement midget.”

“Getting horsepower hooked up for the race track will be difficult. It will be good racing at the end of the day.”

The driving technique that Love developed in his pavement Midget racing days has also been a big part of his development in the ARCA Menards Series, leading to 12 career ARCA national wins along with five ARCA Menards Series West wins.

“Growing up racing at Madera Speedway, Stockton, Ukiah, and Lakeport – it helped me kind of just live more on the edge than the pavement stock car stuff,” Love said. “It taught me how to race with respect and also have a lot of horsepower and how to drive a big horsepower car. Power to weight ratio is so big in a Midget and it’s so easy to break traction. With the pavement Midget Ive always had a big diamond in (my line). I still use that same technique to this day in the ARCA stuff: get in really hard and use the tire to your advantage.”

Registration is moving quickly for the inaugural Open Wheel Showdown, with just 75 spaces available for the $50,000-to-win Winged Sprint Car division. Drivers can learn more at www.OpenWheelShowdown.com

Tickets are also on sale though the Las Vegas Motor Speedway ticket office and online. Details can be found at both www.LVMS.com or the Open Wheel Showdown website.

The event will be telecast through Speed Sport and on the new Speed Sport 1 channel. More broadcast details will be announced soon.

5 KYLE LARSON

Age: 31 (July 31, 1992)

Hometown: Elk Grove, California

Resides: Mooresville, North Carolina

Crew Chief: Cliff Daniels

Standings: 1st

No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, will be available to members of the media at the Homestead-Miami Speedway media center on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 8 a.m. local time.

VICTORIOUS IN VEGAS: For the second time in three years, Kyle Larson won the opening race in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs to secure a berth in the Championship 4. The driver of the No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 swept the stages at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and led a race-high 133 laps. Off the final turn, Larson held on to defend the lead, earning his second career Championship 4 appearance and his fourth points-paying win of the 2023 Cup Series season.

CHAMPIONSHIP 4 BOUND: In 2021, Larson won the Cup Series championship at Phoenix Raceway. The No. 5 HendrickCars.com team will now return to the Arizona track in November as a contender for their second title. The 31-year-old driver has won at all three of the remaining tracks in the playoffs: Homestead-Miami Speedway (2022), Martinsville Speedway (2023) and Phoenix (2021). Since 2021, Larson has the most playoff wins (eight) and is ahead in that category by five victories. Throughout the 2023 playoffs, Larson leads the field in average running position (6.81) and laps run in the top five (1,292).

1.5-MILE MOJO: Mile-and-a-half tracks have historically been a strong point for Larson. In the 2023 season, Larson has earned the second most points (224) on that track length, trailing only Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron (254). Of the last seven races on 1.5-mile tracks, Larson and Byron are the only repeat winners with two victories each. Since joining the 14-time championship-winning organization in 2021, Larson has six wins on 1.5-mile tracks.

MIAMI MEMORIES: The Elk Grove, California, native dominated last year’s race at Homestead-Miami to earn a spot for the No. 5 team in the Championship 4 of the owner playoffs. In that event, he swept the stages, had an average running position of 1.40 and led 199 laps en route his first Cup Series victory at the South Florida track.

FAST FORWARDING TO FLORIDA: After locking himself into the Championship 4 via a win at Las Vegas, Larson and the No. 5 team head to Miami with the objective of maintaining momentum. Homestead-Miami has long been one of Larson’s best tracks. In nine starts at “The Sunshine State” venue, he has earned a win, five top-five finishes and an average finish of 10.67. He is two-for-two in top-five finishes at the track with Hendrick Motorsports. In addition, Larson’s five stage wins and 529 laps led are the most among drivers entered in Sunday’s 267-lap race. His ability to find the razor’s edge of speed against the outside wall is a skill few drivers have mastered.

IN 2023: This season, Larson leads the series in laps led (1,031) and top-five finishes (14). He is in a three-way tie for the fifth-most top-10 finishes (16). The driver of the No. 5 ranks third in the following statistical categories: average running position (11.09), laps run in the top five (3,476) and laps run in the top 10 (5,079). He also ranks second-best on restarts, based on data from Racing Insights.

FIVE FAST GUYS: After 33 races this season, the No. 5 HendrickCars.com pit crew has the second-fastest average four-tire pit stop time of 11.083 seconds. This past weekend in Vegas with only 55 laps remaining in the race, the No. 5 crew executed a money stop in 9.543 seconds that gained Larson two positions on pit road and sent him to the lead before he claimed victory. The team’s five-man pit crew consists of Blaine Anderson (front-tire changer), R.J. Barnette (tire carrier), Brandon Harder (fueler), Brandon Johnson (jackman) and Calvin Teague (rear-tire changer).

INDYCAR INSIGHT: The 2021 Cup Series champion had a busy last week as he prepares for the 2024 Indianapolis 500. He went to the Arrow McLaren shop for his seat fitting on Tuesday, Oct. 10, before taking part in rookie orientation at the famed track on Thursday, Oct. 12. Larson reached a top speed of 217.898 mph and passed orientation with flying colors. Take a behind-the-scenes look at his experience as he prepared for the #Hendrick1100 in his HENDRICKCARS.COM entry.

9 CHASE ELLIOTT

Hometown: Dawsonville, Georgia

Resides: Dawsonville, Georgia

Crew Chief: Alan Gustafson

Standings: 17th

No. 9 Hooters Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

CUT TO THE CHASE: After some tough luck at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last weekend, Chase Elliott and the No. 9 team sit 61 points below the elimination line to advance to the Championship 4 in the 2023 owner playoffs. While the team has their work cut out for them over the next two races, this group is resilient. In fact, following the last four races this season in which Elliott finished outside the top 30, he has rebounded to finish in the top five in his next race. The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champions also have a history of being fast in October as Elliott has earned four victories during that month – his most in a single month in his Cup Series career. Outside of Las Vegas, the 27-year-old driver and the No. 9 squad have been the kings of consistency in these elimination-style playoffs. Through the first six races, they held the second-best average finish (8.00) and only finished outside the top 10 once, placing 11th at Texas Motor Speedway.

WELCOME TO MIAMI: Elliott has seven Cup Series starts at Homestead-Miami Speedway with a best finish of second coming in 2020. He’s led 31 laps, earned two top-five finishes, three top-10s and placed inside the top 15 in all his Cup starts at the 1.5-mile track. His average finish of 9.71 at the South Florida track ranks third among all Cup Series drivers with more than two starts and is also a career-best for the driver on active 1.5-mile tracks. Elliott has also made three starts at Homestead-Miami across the NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, driving to one top-five result and two top-10s.

1.5-MILE HISTORY: Elliott will make his 78th Cup Series start on a 1.5-mile track (not counting races on Atlanta Motor Speedway after its reprofiling in 2022) this Sunday at Homestead-Miami. In his previous 77 races, he’s led 1,041 laps. The five-time winner of the National Motorsports Press Association Most Popular Driver Award has two career victories on mile-and-a-half tracks (Kansas Speedway in 2018 and Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2020), 22 top-five finishes – eight of which are runner-up results – and 38 top-10s. Elliott’s best finish on a 1.5-mile oval this season came last month with a sixth-place run at Kansas.

AG IN SOUTH FLORIDA: No. 9 crew chief Alan Gustafson has 18 Cup Series starts atop the pit box at Homestead-Miami with five different drivers (Elliott, Kyle Busch, Casey Mears and NASCAR Hall of Famers Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon). The veteran crew chief earned a victory with Gordon in 2012 and the pole position with the Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman in 2014 at the track. In addition, the Ormond Beach, Florida, native has a combined four top-five finishes and eight top-10s with 251 laps led in those 18 races.

FOUR TIRES FAST: Last month, the No. 9 pit crew had the fastest four-tire pit stop of the race at the mile-and-a-half track of Texas Motor Speedway with a time of 9.409 seconds. The over-the-wall squad currently holds the ninth-best average four-tire pit stop time of 11.294 seconds. The 2021 Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew award-winning group is comprised of Chad Avrit (rear-tire changer), Jared Erspamer (tire carrier), John Gianninoto (fueler), Nick O’Dell (front-tire changer) and T.J. Semke (jackman).

HOOTERS IS BACK: Hooters is back as the primary partner of the No. 9 team this weekend for its final of three races in 2023. Earlier this year as part of the company’s 40th anniversary, Hooters unveiled a special Night Owl paint scheme for the 2023 season. Most recently, Elliott drove the Hooters Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 to a third-place finish at the Chicago Street Course. Get a look at all the angles of the No. 9 Hooters Chevy here.

WHEN CHASE WINS YOU WIN: Fans can visit Hooters on Mondays after Cup Series races this season and ask their server for free fried pickles (with a drink purchase) when Elliott and the No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports team finishes in the top 10. If the No. 9 team wins, customers receive 10 free wings with any 10-wing purchase. Get more details at hooters.com/racing.

The sixth-year Cup Series driver has two other national series starts at Homestead-Miami on his résumé – one in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and one in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. In 2016, Byron started on the pole for the Truck Series race and led 31 laps en route to the win at the 1.5-mile speedway with Rudy Fugle on the pit box.

RUDY RUNS MIAMI: Crew chief Fugle will be making his third Cup Series start this Sunday at the South Florida track. In his first showing, Fugle went on to capture his first Cup Series win with Byron and the No. 24 after leading 102 laps. He followed that up by capturing the pole award in 2022, leading 32 laps, all before going on to score a 12th-place result. The Livonia, New York, native also has nine other national series starts with seven of those coming in the Truck Series. PLAYOFF LOWDOWN: For the fourth straight season, Hendrick Motorsports has had at least one driver qualify for the Championship 4 in the NASCAR Cup Series. Kyle Larson’s win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway locks him and the No. 5 team in as one of the four drivers and teams chasing after the title next month at Phoenix Raceway. William Byron remains in the playoff field on the driver’s side of things, while the Nos. 9 and 24 teams are battling for the owner championship. This year’s playoffs have seen the organization triumph in the opening races in the Round of 16 (Larson at Darlington Raceway), the Round of 12 (Byron at Texas Motor Speedway) and the Round of 8 (Larson at Las Vegas).

CHAMPIONSHIP COUNT: The Rick Hendrick-owned team has a series-best 14 Cup Series championships. NASCAR Hall of Fame Class of 2024 inductee Jimmie Johnson accounts for half of those with seven (2006-10, 2013 and 2016). NASCAR Hall of Famer and team vice chairman Jeff Gordon racked up four titles (1995, 1997-98 and 2001). NASCAR Hall of Famer Terry Labonte (1996), Chase Elliott (2020) and Larson (2021) each have one championship for the team. Nine of those titles have come in the playoff era (2004-present).

TEN PACK: Larson’s win at Las Vegas was the 10th victory of the season for Hendrick Motorsports. The 2023 campaign marks the third straight season that the organization has earned double-digit wins and the 13th season in team history with at least 10 victories.

RECORD SETTERS: Hendrick Motorsports has posted a series-best 58 wins in the playoffs, which is 22 more than the closest team. Johnson has the most with 29 victories. Among the current driver lineup, Larson tops the board with eight wins, then Elliott at seven victories and Byron and Alex Bowman with one each.

GOOD SIGN: In six of the last seven occurrences where a Hendrick Motorsports driver has won at least six races, that driver has gone on to win the title (Johnson in 2007-10 and 2013 and Larson in 2021). Byron has a half dozen wins in the 2023 season.

MIAMI HEAT: The Concord, North Carolina, based organization has four wins at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Larson (2022) and Byron (2021) have won the last two races contested at the 1.5-mile track. In addition, Gordon (2012) and Johnson (2016) also earned one victory at the venue. Johnson’s win earned him his seventh and final Cup Series championship to close out the 2016 season.

OUT FRONT IN FLORIDA: Over the last two races at Homestead-Miami, Hendrick Motorsports has led over half the laps run, 64.05% (342 of 534), at the track. Larson tops the board (204) followed by Byron (134). Elliott (four) has also had circuits out front. The 342 laps led in the past two races account for over one-third of the organization’s total at the South Florida facility.

SOUTH FLORIDA STREAK: Entering Sunday’s event, Hendrick Motorsports has a streak of 21 straight races with at least one top-10 finish at Homestead-Miami. In fact, the squad had at least one driver place in the top 10 in 23 of the 24 Cup Series races held at the track.

MILE-AND-A-HALF MUSCLE: So far in 2023, there have been six races on 1.5-mile tracks (two at Kansas Speedway and Las Vegas as well as one each at Texas and Charlotte Motor Speedway). Across those six races, the team has three wins, nine top-five finishes, 13 top-10s, one pole position and 826 laps led. When it comes to points earned on 1.5-mile tracks this year, Byron ranks first (254) and Larson is second (224). In the Next Gen car (2022-present) on 1.5-mile tracks, Hendrick Motorsports has the most victories with five. Larson’s victory at Las Vegas last weekend is the most recent of those triumphs.

STUDYING THE TRENDS: In the last 11 Cup Series races, the organization has had at least one driver finish in the top five. Those top fives came at Michigan International Speedway (Larson), the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course (Elliott and Bowman), Watkins Glen International (Byron), Daytona International Speedway (Elliott), Darlington (Larson and Byron), Kansas (Larson), Bristol Motor Speedway (Larson), Texas (Byron), Talladega Superspeedway (Byron), the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL (Byron) and Las Vegas (Larson). This is the best streak by any team since Hendrick Motorsports’ 14-race streak with at least one top-five finish in 2021.

QUOTABLE /

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on his mindset for the rest of the Round of 8 after earning a spot in the Championship 4 with a win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway: “It’s nice to be locked in (to the Championship 4). The points are really close. It’s nice to not have to worry about points and go there and race our own race. I aim to race up front and try to make good decisions on the racetrack. Knowing that I’m locked in, I’m not going into these next two races thinking that they are throwaways. I want to go there (Homestead-Miami Speedway and Martinsville Speedway), have some good runs, potentially have a couple more wins and roll into Phoenix (Raceway) with a lot of confidence and momentum to go after a second championship.”

Cliff Daniels, crew chief of the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the team’s areas of focus for the remainder of the Round of 8: “We are certainly glad to have the momentum (from Las Vegas Motor Speedway) but being realistic we know that there is still an uphill battle ahead of us. There are still two more races we need to go run well at and make sure we are doing everything right including our processes and everything about how we execute our days while getting ready for Phoenix (Raceway). That’s kind of our focus and we need to make sure that we do all the right things right at Homestead (Miami Speedway) to execute a good race. Same thing at Martinsville (Speedway). The momentum is nice to have, but we are going to keep our blinders on and stay as grounded as we can while continuing to push forward.”

Chase Elliott, driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on how he approaches the remainder of the Round of 8 in the owner playoffs: “Last weekend was tough for sure, but right now we’re focused on Homestead (Miami Speedway) and I’m looking forward to getting there. Obviously, we’re in a position where we need to win one of the next two to get into the Championship 4 on the owner side and I do think we’re a team that’s capable of doing that. I feel like, other than (Las) Vegas, we’ve really been making gains and, overall, have just enjoyed the challenge of trying to advance through these rounds. I’m going to continue doing what I can to improve where I need to. This team deserves a win and I want to get them one.”

Alan Gustafson, crew chief of the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the challenges of Homestead-Miami Speedway: “It is a really tough thing because what we really ran into in (Las) Vegas was just as extreme. You go out there at 9:30 in the morning (for practice) and it is super cool and there is no rubber on the track. The pace is just through the roof. You are running as fast as everybody qualified. You are not really going to get a great indication on what your big struggle is going to be during the race. You are going to have a really gripped-up track that is cool and probably going to be able to run down off the wall. You are probably going to be able to make time in lanes that you are not going to be able to make time in when there is a lot of traffic out there, rubber on the track and it is warm. That is certainly an added degree of difficulty. At Vegas, we learned some things on how to handle that better and we will try to apply that at Homestead (Miami Speedway).”

William Byron, driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on running the wall at Homestead-Miami: “I mean I’ve done it before, but I don’t think in the (NASCAR) Cup (Series) car. It’s not maybe as comfortable for me, but I do feel like I’m capable of running well at Homestead (Miami Speedway). I’ve won a Cup race there (in 2021) and last year we qualified on the pole. It’s a place that is within our wheelhouse. It’s just a matter of how good we can be there. I think we can realistically have a chance to compete and fight for a win there. I don’t know yet, but I feel like we can be pretty solid at Homestead, for sure.”

Rudy Fugle, crew chief of the No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on his thoughts about Homestead-Miami: “Homestead (Miami Speedway) is one of my favorite tracks we go to and always has been. I’ve been able to find success there, but I think it’s mainly because I enjoy how the track races. We’ve spent a lot of time preparing for this race, even before last weekend at Las Vegas (Motor Speedway). We were a bit off from where we hoped at track, so we spent this week really honing in our setup. Hopefully, we can have a solid day and cushion our points gap before the final race of the round.”

Alex Bowman, driver of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on his expectations of Homestead-Miami for the first time in the Next Gen car: “Homestead (Miami Speedway) has been hit or miss for me. I ran well there in 2021 and had to miss the 2022 race because of my injury. Blake (Harris, crew chief) and I have been working hard in the simulator to get me familiar with the track and some of its intricacies. The team has been working hard these past few weeks and building fast No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1s, so I have a lot of confidence that we can go to Homestead and be in the mix at the end.”

Blake Harris, crew chief of the No. 48 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, on the team’s outlook heading to Homestead-Miami: “Looking back to Alex’s (Bowman) last time at Homestead (Miami Speedway), he had a top-10 finish. He was able to score stage points, which is a great starting point for us heading there for the first time together and his first race there in the Next Gen car. We’ve put time in at the simulator for a couple of weeks and have 20 minutes of practice to get Alex comfortable. We had decent pace at Darlington (Raceway) a few weeks back, which I think has some similarities, so I feel confident we can get the car and Alex to where we need to be. We will use this week to continue to build our notebook for next year and try and capitalize on opportunities to get the Ally Chevy in victory lane before the end of the season.”

Mazda Unveils 2024 Mazda MX-5 Cup Schedule

High profile venues star in the 14-race calendar

October 19, 2023 – The 2024 Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires schedule brings the spec series back to familiar favorites as well as high-profile IMSA events once again. The 14-round calendar is composed of seven doubleheader events across North America, including three of IMSA’s premier events.

The 2024 Mazda MX-5 Cup season begins where it traditionally has for the past three years: Daytona International Raceway, as support for the famous Rolex 24 at Daytona, January 24 – 26. The drafting battles on the banked speedway turns are something that have proven to get both fans and the IMSA paddock on their feet.

For Rounds Three and Four, the series stays in Florida and joins the 12 Hours of Sebring ticket at Sebring International Raceway, March 13- 15. It marks the return of MX-5 Cup to the historic venue, having last raced there in 2021, producing one of the series’ most famous endings: a three-way photo finish with a 0.001-second margin of victory.

After taking the month of April off, the series travels across the country to Monterey, California and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, May 10 – 12. The beautiful circuit is the spiritual home of the series which made its debut there in 2006.

Following a year’s hiatus, IMSA returns to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio and brings MX-5 Cup with it. Rounds Seven and Eight take place June 7- 9.

For the first time since 2016, MX-5 Cup will race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park outside of Toronto, Canada. The series will head north of the border to the ultra-fast circuit formerly known as Mosport July 12 – 14.

In August, MX-5 Cup returns to beautiful VIRginia International Raceway. Rounds 11 and 12 will take place August 23 – 25 in Alton, Virgina.

As has become tradition, the MX-5 Cup season ends at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, as part of IMSA’s celebrated season finale: Petit Le Mans. The final two races for the championship will take place October 9 – 11.

“The 2024 schedule is a balance of continuity and striving to be on the largest stages possible,” Mazda Motorsports Program Manager Jonathan Applegate said. “To have a spec series race at Daytona, Sebring and Road Atlanta is special and shows how popular the series has become.

“We’ve learned a lot about which tracks suit MX-5 Cup in terms of quality racing and putting on a good show, and we’ve taken that into consideration when creating the 2024 schedule as well.”

The 2024 season will mark the 19th season of Mazda MX-5 Cup competition.

About: The Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires is the signature spec series for Mazda Motorsports. The series has been operated by Andersen Promotions since 2017 and is currently sanctioned by IMSA. Mazda-powered grassroots champions can earn Mazda scholarships for this pro-level series. The Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup awards more than $1 million in prizes and scholarships.

It’s always a fantastic opportunity to return to a place I have laps at, along with a rich history of going to Homestead as a fan for several years, watching the season finally there.

“To be able to return to a track that I have so many memories of is something special to me. Looking forward to getting on the track on Friday afternoon.”

It will be a busy weekend for Maggio in the Sunshine State. In addition to competing in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series race, he will attempt to make his fifth NASCAR Xfinity Series start of the season in an entry fielded by RSS Racing with Lefcourt Brothers.

“It is really going to be a busy weekend at Homestead, but I believe I am ready for it,” sounded Maggio. “I am thankful to both AM Racing and RSS Racing for the opportunities of allowing me to compete in both the Truck Series and Xfinity Series races on Saturday afternoon.

“Hopefully, I’ll have a good result in both vehicles and can gain some attention for our partners and continue to mount more on-track experience that will help strengthen my racing resume.”
