Griffin employees, rebuilding after tornadoes, receiving free NASCAR tickets from AMS

HAMPTON, Ga. (Feb. 9, 2023) – As the City of Griffin continues to recover from widespread damage caused by a severe storm that included tornadoes last month, Atlanta Motor Speedway is setting aside tickets to its upcoming NASCAR weekend for city employees.

The speedway will welcome city workers and their guests to the Ambetter Health 400 on Sunday, March 19, with complimentary tickets provided by the speedway.

“The City of Griffin is extremely appreciative of Atlanta Motor Speedway for providing the opportunity for our employees to go to the race on Sunday, March 19th. The last few weeks have been very difficult and tiresome as we have all worked diligently to clean-up our City after the tornadoes that hit Griffin on January 12, 2023,” said Griffin City Manager Jessica O’Connor. “Our employees consider themselves to be ‘public servants’ and have acted in that capacity throughout their tenure as City of Griffin employees; however, those efforts usually go unnoticed. To receive such a gift as being able to take our families to the race is a huge honor for all of us.”

“The destruction we saw just down the road from our speedway was devastating, the city of Griffin will be rebuilding for quite some time,” said AMS Executive Vice President and General Manager Brandon Hutchison. “The men and women employed by the city are working tirelessly to put the pieces back together. We want to acknowledge their hard work by giving something back to them: tickets to our upcoming NASCAR race and a day of fun and entertainment on us.”

Griffin city employees who accept the invitation will enjoy a fun-filled day at the speedway, from the packed Fan Zone and Parmalee pre-race concert to 400 miles of thrilling NASCAR action on the Georgia track.

The Ambetter Health 400 is the main event of Atlanta’s spring NASCAR weekend. More information about the Ambetter Health 400 NASCAR weekend can be found at www.AtlantaMotorSpeedway.com.

IMS Becomes First Sport Venue To Receive Silver Responsible Sport Certification

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023) – Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), home to the largest single-day sporting event in the world, the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, is the first sport facility to achieve organizational certification through the Council for Responsible Sport (Council).

Organizational certification became available for the first time in August 2021. The new standard is based on the recognition of the following core principles: power of sport, resolution of climate change, enablement of social justice and business of sport. IMS was the first to commit to the new framework, implementing year-round tracking of environmental and social impacts for the more than 300 events hosted at IMS annually.

Previously, in 2021, the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge was certified a responsible event.

The Council provides a structured approach for event hosts and organizers to measure, implement, validate and improve the social and environmental sustainability of their events and venues. Certification is earned by taking action spanning five categories: planning and communications, procurement, resource management, access and equity and community legacy. IMS ultimately accomplished 210 credits across these categories, earning silver level distinction as a Certified Organization.

“IMS’ commitment to embrace social and environmental realities and to implement a systematic approach to setting goals, adapting operations and measuring progress is outstanding,” said Rico Tesio, Council for Responsible Sport board chair. “Achieving Responsible Sport certification at an organizational level is not only a real milestone in the venue’s own storied history but also demonstrates leadership in motorsport and beyond and should be celebrated as vigorously as any checkered flag waved on the famous Yard of Bricks.”

Key partnerships and the implementation of new tracking technology helped IMS achieve this landmark goal. With the addition of the new organizational certification, the Council implemented ReScore, a system designed to help venues track their progress. WM Sustainability Services was critical in IMS’ sustainability journey, providing support by documenting a variety of resource management credits relating to emissions calculations, waste diversion and energy consumption.

“This is a monumental and impactful achievement for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, earned through a comprehensive commitment to innovation and hard work that safeguards our community and leads the way in our sport,” IMS President J. Douglas Boles said. “We learned a lot in 2021 when we received our event certification for the Indy 500. That process helped us get to this moment, where we are now tracking the impact of our events throughout the year and implementing systemic programs that yield results.

“We remain committed to becoming the most sustainable motorsport venue in the world, and we are grateful for the support and enthusiasm shown by our fans as we continue to identify new opportunities to encourage their participation in this journey.”

As part of the new certification, IMS implemented new standards and procedures. This includes the development of a diversity, equity and inclusion plan, along with a public commitment to the measurement and mitigation of environmental impacts. IMS expanded waste diversion efforts beyond the Indianapolis 500 to include events hosted at IMS year-round. Additionally, IMS adopted new procurement policies and protocols, eliminating single-use plastic and Styrofoam in office spaces, in addition to prioritizing purchases from women- and minority-owned businesses and businesses with sustainability related certifications.

That race is the climax of an exciting Month of May schedule for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES that also includes the GMR Grand Prix on Saturday, May 13 on the IMS road course. Three of the biggest racing series in North America each will race on the IMS road course during Brickyard Weekend on Aug. 11-13, featuring the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR Cup Series, Gallagher Grand Prix for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and Pennzoil 150 at the Brickyard for the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Other events in 2023 at IMS will feature the NOS Energy Drink USAC National Midget Series, the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, the Fanatec GT World Challenge America and IMSA. IMS, the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and IMS Productions are owned by Penske Corporation, a global transportation, automotive and motorsports leader. About the Council for Responsible Sport

Since 2008, the Council’s vision has been of a world where responsibly produced sports events are the norm. Over the years, the Council has certified over 150 events, reaching over one million participants and countless spectators. The Indianapolis 500 joined our family of certified events in 2021, earning silver certification.

In fall 2021, the Council introduced a new Responsible Sport Standard for Organizations, and broadened its vision to include a world where organizations already producing responsible events could also be recognized for their ongoing and systemwide commitment to responsible planning & communications, procurement practices, resource management, access & equity, and community legacy. In early 2023, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway became the first-ever recipient of Organizational Certification by the Council, achieving silver certification after completing the rigorous year-long process that organizational certification entails.

TRICON Garage Tabs Jesse Love for Part-Time Schedule

2x ARCA West Champion to Make Truck Debut at Gateway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (February 9, 2023) — TRICON Garage (TRICON) has announced today that it has signed Toyota development driver Jesse Love to its 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) driver lineup. The two-time ARCA Menards Series West champion will compete in three races behind the wheel of the No. 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro.

Love, the youngest winner ever in a NASCAR sanctioned event, has found considerable success in the ARCA ranks over the past three seasons. In addition to his two championships, he has racked up five West victories. Love captured his first ARCA national series victory at Salem Speedway in October of 2021 and brought home another win in 2022 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. The recently turned 18-year-old will run full-time in pursuit of the ARCA Menards Series championship for Venturini Motorsports in 2023.

“We’ve had the pleasure of competing against Jesse in ARCA over the past few seasons and have always been impressed with his ability behind the wheel,” said partner David Gilliland. “We’re thrilled to play a role in his development and can’t wait to have him as part of our program in 2023.”

The Menlo Park, California native will make his NCTS debut in the Toyota 200 at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, Illinois on June 3. He will return to the seat at Kansas Speedway on September 8 and round out his schedule with the season finale at Phoenix Raceway on November 3.

“First and foremost, I have to thank everyone at Toyota Racing Development for this great opportunity – I simply wouldn’t be here without their support and I am grateful for it every day,” said Love. “I’ve known David Gilliland for a long time and have such a tremendous amount of respect for him as both a driver and a team owner. To put it simply – I literally can’t wait to get behind the wheel for both David and this team. A lot of time, sweat, and tears have gone into this opportunity and I’m looking forward to capitalizing on it. I think Gateway will be a great place to get started, so June 3 can’t come fast enough.”

Love’s Toyota Tundra TRD Pro will carry sponsorship from HomeSmiles. HomeSmiles is the National leader for annual home maintenance services, taking care of 18 vital home services in one appointment.

Important Things To Consider When Renting A Luxury Car

Photo by Reinhart Julian on Unsplash

Whether you’re planning an important business venture, a well-deserved vacation, or any other kind of trip, there’s a good chance you’ll want to rent a vehicle to get around. While you can opt for pocket-friendly rental models, there are several reasons to consider a luxury car instead.

Luxury car rentals are available in a wide variety, and there’s no better way to travel in style and absolute comfort.

Nevertheless, there are a few essential things to consider when renting a luxury car.

Do Some Research Ahead Of Time

It’s crucial to know ahead of time which model you want to rent. You’ll also need to find a rental company that stocks the model you’re after and secure your booking in advance.

It’s also wise to ask for a model guarantee. Even though there are hardly any setbacks when booking a luxury car rental, it’s nice to have peace of mind that your exotic car will be delivered on time.

Consider The Size Of Your Baggage

Luxury and exotic car models sometimes don’t come with boast-worthy storage capacities. In some cases, these cars might have no storage space at all. So, it’s wise to consider your baggage size before choosing a rental. Otherwise, your trip might be a bit less comfortable than you’d want.

Keep An Eye On The Mileage

You’ll also want to know the estimated mileage during your trip so you can compare your estimation to the included mileage for the rental; this will help you avoid extra costs for extra mileage.

Understand Your Coverage

The deposit for a luxury rental will largely depend on the make and model. Even if the deposit is hefty, opting for rental car insurance is still wise. This insurance is often overlooked as an unnecessary extra cost, but additional coverage provides extra peace of mind when renting a luxury vehicle.

Instead of hoping nothing goes wrong during your trip, opt for insurance with the rental company. Moreover, it’s also essential to check your travel insurance policies to understand what you are covered for while enjoying your getaway.

Inspect The Vehicle

Once you’ve chosen your luxury car, you might be tempted to start driving your rental car right away. However, inspecting the vehicle for even the most minor imperfection is essential.

Even though luxury rentals are usually in top condition, rentals are turned around quickly, and inspectors can miss some small details. So, take your time to examine the vehicle. Photograph imperfections with time stamps to prevent being charged for pre-existing imperfections.

Moreover, if you do happen to damage a luxury rental, you’ll need to contact the rental company and return the car for damage assessment. Then you’ll need to settle payment for repairs and inquire about solutions for the remainder of your stay.

Renting a luxury vehicle can transform the way you travel. Whether on business or leisure, there’s no better way to heighten your comfort than with a luxury car. These rentals also come with an extra service layer, like avoiding airport taxes and vehicle delivery to your hotel or doorstep.

Myatt Snider joins Joe Gibbs Racing for part-time Xfinity Series campaign

Photo by Don Dunn for SpeedwayMedia.com.

Myatt Snider will be joining the Joe Gibbs Racing family on a part-time NASCAR Xfinity Series basis for the upcoming season.

The 28-year-old Snider from Charlotte, North Carolina, will be piloting JGR’s No. 19 “all-star” Toyota Supra entry sponsored by Tree Top, beginning at Daytona International Speedway next Saturday to commence a new season of competition. He will then compete at Portland Raceway in June before competing in four of the final five Xfinity Series scheduled events during the Playoffs at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Martinsville Speedway and the season finale at Phoenix Raceway between October and November.

The news comes as Snider is coming off his third full-time campaign in the Xfinity circuit. He spent the previous season at Jordan Anderson Racing, where he notched a season-high runner-up result at Portland and a total of four top-10 results before finishing in 18th place in the final driver’s standings.

“With six races on our 2023 schedule, I’m looking forward to climbing into the No. 19 TreeTop Toyota GR Supra with Joe Gibbs Racing this year,” Snider said. “Having worked with JGR as a high schooler and a young racer, it’s an awesome full circle moment to return as a driver to the team that taught me so much about racing itself. It’s good to be reunited with [crew chief] Jason Ratcliff as we have an awesome history working together. With many memories and wins from 2013 and 2014 when I worked on the No. 20 Toyota Camry under Jason’s leadership, the team has always been more of a family relationship to me. I’m glad to be returning to the JGR family and looking forward to continuing to learn and grow as a driver.”

Snider made his inaugural presence in the Xfinity Series at the start of the 2020 season, where he split driving duties between Richard Childress Racing and RSS Racing. He notched his first career pole for his first career start at Daytona, where he ended up in 33rd place after being involved in an on-track incident midway into the event. He went on to claim a total of two top-five results and six top-10 results before finishing in 16th place in the final standings.

The following season, he joined Richard Childress Racing as a full-time Xfinity competitor in the No. 2 Chevrolet Camaro. After finishing no higher than seventh during the first two scheduled events, he capitalized on two late-race restarts to score his first Xfinity career win at Homestead-Miami Speedway in February. He went on to qualify for the 2021 Xfinity Playoffs, where he was eliminated from title contention following the Round of 12 and settled in ninth place in the final standings. Despite notching a career-high 11 top-10 results along with his first victory and a Playoff berth, Snider was replaced by Sheldon Creed and he ended up joining forces with Jordan Anderson Racing for the 2022 season.

Prior to the Xfinity Series, Snider made 35 career starts in the Craftsman Truck Series from 2016 to 2019. During his lone full-time basis in the series, he claimed the 2018 Rookie-of-the-Year title on the strength of three top-five results, eight top-10 results, an average-finishing result of 14.1 and a ninth-place finish in the driver’s standings.

“We’re looking forward to have Myatt on our No. 19 team for six races,” Steve DeSouza, Executive Vice President of NXS and Development, added. “Building out the driver lineup for this car is an opportunity for JGR to help drivers continue to develop in their racing career and we’re looking forward to seeing how Myatt continues to grow.”

Snider’s addition to Joe Gibbs Racing means that he will become the fourth different competitor to pilot Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 19 “all-star” entry throughout this year’s Xfinity Series season alongside Ryan Truex, Joe Graf Jr. and Connor Mosack. The remainder of JGR’s driver lineup for the No. 19 entry for the remaining 19 vacant events along with Truex’s schedule have yet to be determined.

Snider’s part-time NASCAR Xfinity Series campaign with Joe Gibbs Racing is set to commence at Daytona International Speedway next Saturday, February 18, at 5 p.m. ET on FS1.

TRICON Garage unveils 2023 crew chief & personnel lineup

Photo by Christian Gardner for SpeedwayMedia.com.

With the 2023 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season nine days away from commencing, TRICON Garage put the final pieces of its rebranded puzzle together by revealing its crew chief and personnel lineup for its fleet of Toyota Tundra TRD Pros and drivers.

For starters, Seth Smith will remain at TRICON to serve as a crew chief for the No. 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro that will compete in select events and be piloted by multiple competitors that include Jason White for the season opener at Daytona International Speedway next Friday and newcomer William Sawalich, who will make his debut at Martinsville Speedway in April. The 34-year-old Smith from Troutman, North Carolina, has achieved two Truck career victories to his resume, both of which occurred during the previous season with Todd Gilliland at Knoxville Raceway and with Ryan Preece at Nashville Superspeedway.

Next, Derek Smith, brother to Seth Smith, will be graduating to the Truck Series to assume the pit box of the No. 5 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro team that will be driven by Dean Thompson, who joins the organization as a full-time competitor after spending the previous season at Niece Motorsports. Smith makes his move to the Truck circuit with 31 ARCA Menards Series events as a crew chief to his resume. As a former crew chief for TRICON in the ARCA regions, he led veteran and TRICON’s owner David Gilliland to his first ARCA West career victory at Phoenix Raceway in 2020.

New to the organization for this season is Scott Zipadelli, the 2018 Truck Series championship-winning crew chief from Newington, Connecticut. Zipadelli will lead the No. 11 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro that will be piloted by Corey Heim, the reigning Truck Series Rookie-of-the-Year recipient who notched his first two career victories during the previous season and is set to run his first full-time Truck season. Prior to TRICON, Zipadelli spent the previous six seasons at Hattori Racing Enterprises, where he notched 14 of his 15 career victories along with the 2018 title with Brett Moffitt. His other victory occurred at Michigan International Speedway in 2016 with Red Horse Racing and Moffitt. To go along with his success in the Truck circuit, Zipadelli has notched three Xfinity Series victories as a crew chief.

Coming off his first campaign as a crew chief in the NASCAR Cup Series, Jerame Donley will embark on another new beginning for this season by becoming a full-time Truck Series crew chief for TRICON’s No. 15 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro that will be driven by Tanner Gray, who returns for a fourth full-time campaign at TRICON. Donley, a graduate from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, spent the majority of this past season as a crew chief for Ty Dillon and Petty GMS Motorsports. Previously, he was a nine-year engineer veteran for Chip Ganassi Racing and a former mechanic for Hendrick Motorsports.

Lastly, Billy Wilburn will be returning to the Truck Series to serve as a crew chief for TRICON’s No. 17 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro team that will be piloted by rookie Taylor Gray in all but the first three scheduled events. The 56-year-old Wilburn from Tempe, Arizona, has called 196 NASCAR national touring series events as a crew chief. His lone victory occurred at Kentucky Speedway in June 2006 with David Gilliland, who notched his first Xfinity career win. With Gray missing the first three events due to age restrictions, Sammy Smith will be making his Truck debut at Daytona. It remains undetermined who will be driving the No. 17 entry for the following two events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March.

In addition, veteran Matt Puccia will be joining TRICON Garage to assume the role of Competition Director. The 69-year-old Puccia from Watertown, New York, previously worked as a Director of Operations for Roush Fenway Racing and has called 269 Cup Series events as a crew chief for Roush from 2011 to 2018. During the span, he notched three career victories and three Playoff appearances, all with former veteran Greg Biffle, from 2012 to 2014.

The 2023 season is set to mark a new beginning for TRICON Garage, which was rebranded from David Gilliland Racing and reunited with Toyota following a three-year partnership with Ford.

With their lineup set, TRICON Garage is set to make its debut at Daytona International Speedway on February 17, which will commence a new season of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competition. The event’s air time is set to occur at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

SiriusXM Returns as Sponsor for Christopher Bell’s and Tyler Reddick’s Toyota Racing Camry TRDs for 2023 NASCAR Cup Series Races

PLANO, Texas (February 8, 2023) – SiriusXM will be featured as the primary sponsor on both of Toyota’s NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) teams – Christopher Bell of Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) and Tyler Reddick of 23XI Racing (23XI) – for multiple races during the 2023 season.

“We are excited to be back with Toyota Racing for the 2023 season. We look forward to seeing the SiriusXM colors back on Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Toyota Camry following his stellar 2022 season showcase and we’re excited to welcome Tyler Reddick and his No. 45 Toyota Camry to the team,” said John Zavisa, SiriusXM’s Senior Vice President of Automotive Partnerships. “We are so proud of our long-standing relationship with Toyota and the opportunity to deliver SiriusXM as a standard feature on every vehicle they manufacture for sale in the Continental U.S.”

Bell, who advanced to his first Championship 4 last season, will run the SiriusXM scheme in back-to-back races to start the season at Southern California’s Auto Club Speedway in February and Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March.

“It’s great to represent a company like SiriusXM during the NASCAR Cup Series season,” said Bell. “SiriusXM NASCAR Radio is such an integral part of getting our sport out to the public and we all enjoy so many different stations in our personal lives, it’s great to carry their colors.”

New Team Toyota driver Reddick will run the SiriusXM scheme three times for 23XI in the No. 45 Toyota Camry TRD, including the Toyota Owners race weekend in Richmond, Darlington Raceway’s May event and at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August.

“There are so many new opportunities for me this season and getting the opportunity to run SiriusXM on my Camry TRD is just another one of those,” said Reddick. “I’ve always been a fan of SiriusXM, but to learn about their relationship with Toyota with production vehicles along with the relationship all of us have with them already makes for a pretty awesome collaboration that comes together on my No. 45 Camry TRD.”

These sponsorships highlight the long-running Toyota relationship with SiriusXM in NASCAR which began in 2007. In 2019, SiriusXM announced a landmark agreement with Toyota where all Toyota models sold in the Continental U.S. with next generation head units would be outfitted with SiriusXM. All Toyota customers receive a three-month subscription to the SiriusXM Platinum Plan, which delivers SiriusXM’s full lineup of exclusive and curated content, plus access to SiriusXM outside the vehicles on the SXM App and on connected devices and speakers, with the purchase of their vehicle.

Notes of Interest

● “I want the Harley J. Earl Trophy:” Aric Almirola has won races at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in NASCAR’s top two series, but the Daytona 500 has managed to elude him, once by just half a lap.

● History at Daytona: Almirola scored his first career Cup Series win in the rain-shortened July 2014 race at Daytona, when he led 14 laps. In the NASCAR Xfinity Series, he started on the pole in his first outing in July 2007, and he captured a win there while piloting the No. 98 Biagi-Den Beste Ford Mustang in July 2016. In 2021, he won his Duel qualifying race for the first time in his career. Almirola also has three Daytona starts in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with a best finish of 12th. This year’s Daytona 500 marks Almirola’s 23rd points-paying Cup Series start at the 2.5-mile superspeedway.

● In the 2018 Daytona 500, Almirola was a half lap away from becoming a Daytona 500 champion. As he was leading the field to the checkered flag, he made an aggressive block on the No. 3 car of Austin Dillon before he was turned into the outside wall, ending his bid. In last year’s Daytona 500, Almirola showed strength by running at the front of the field on occasion, ultimatley bringing home a fifth place finish. Click here to watch last year’s Daytona 500 vlog.

● To earn a spot in the Daytona 500, drivers must first compete in the Duel – twin 150-mile qualifying races Thursday night (Feb. 16) that set the 40-car field for Sunday’s main event. Almirola’s 2021 Duel win was his third consecutive top-three finish in the qualifying event.

● Before drivers compete in the Duel, they race the clock in single-lap qualifying Wednesday night (Feb. 15). The two fastest cars are locked into front-row starting spots for the Daytona 500 while the rest of the field is determined by the results of the Duel. Even-numbered qualifiers race in the first Duel and odd-numbered qualifiers race in the second Duel. Almirola’s best Daytona 500 starting position was third.

● Drew Blickensderfer returns as crew chief for the No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang for the second year in a row and for the fourth season overall with Almirola. Blickensderfer and Almirola were together in 2017 and 2018 at Richard Petty Motorsports.

● Almirola’s career: In 424 NASCAR Cup Series starts, Almirola has earned three wins, 28 top-five finishes, 91 top-10s, three poles, and has led 974 laps.

● Almirola has a solid record at superspeedways with two wins, six top-fives, 12 top-10s and 84 laps led. In June 2020, he scored his eighth-consecutive top-10 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway to tie the track record for most consecutive top-10s – a mark first set by Hall of Famer Dale Earnhardt Jr., from April 2001 to October 2004

● 2022 Recap: Almirola earned one pole, two top-five finishes, seven top-10s and led 81 laps. He started the season as the only NASCAR Cup Series driver with three consecutive top-10 finishes – fifth in the season-opening Daytona 500, sixth at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, and sixth at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He earned his fourth Cup Series pole at the Sept, 17 race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.

● Smithfield Foods rejoins Almirola and the No. 10 Ford team as the anchor sponsor for the 2023 NASCAR season. Fans will see the iconic white, black, and gold scheme adorn Almirola’s Ford Mustang in the Duel and the Daytona 500. Smithfield has been a sponsor of Almirola’s for the entirety of his fulltime NASCAR Cup Series career – making it one of the longest-lasting partnerships in NASCAR.

● Back for More: Last year, Almirola announced that he would step down from fulltime racing following the 2022 season.Through the course of the year, he discovered a new balance between his passion for racing and dedication to his family. His wife Janice, and kids Alex and Abby, joined him on most race weekends, oftentimes enjoying once-in-a-lifetime experiences together as they traveled the country. His rapport with crew chief Blickensderfer flourished, and the intense pressure he had put on himself was replaced with the joy of simply being present. Not only did Almirola see the sport from a new perspective, so did anchor partner Smithfield Foods, who broached the subject of Almirola returning to fulltime racing in 2023. On Aug. 26 in the media center of Daytona, Almirola, SHR and Smithfield Foods announced his return with a multiyear agreement and Smithfield’s largest allotment of races since joining the team in 2018.

● Beyond the 10 YouTube Series:In 2023, Almirola will continue to share his life beyond the No. 10 Smithfield Ford with season five of his award-winning YouTube series. Fans and media can subscribe on YouTube to see Almirola’s personality on and off the track. Aric Almirola, Driver of the No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

What are you most excited for this season?

“I’m just excited for a new season in general. Every year, at this time of the year, it’s just exciting and it’s a land of opportunity. Every single weekend is a new opportunity to go win. I think that’s what I’m looking forward to the most, just coming back for another year with the same crew chief and the same group of guys and trying to go compete at a higher level and win races. I feel more prepared than I ever have. I really honed in on my recovery this offseason. My training regimen changed, and I feel more disciplined and physically and mentally prepared than ever. You have to be in this sport. Recovery and staying fresh is going to be a huge part of finding success each weekend.”

What is the feeling like moments before the Daytona 500?

“When I strap in for the Daytona 500, it is an exhilarating feeling. All of your senses are on high alert. You’re getting ready to roll off pit road for The Great American Race. There are 150,000 people on the property and millions watching at home. It is such an unreal feeling. It is so hard to describe what that feeling is like. You’ve got butterflies in your stomach, but not the nervous kind. It’s more of an antsy, ready-to-go feeling. There’s been all this hype and build-up during preseason and Speed Week, and finally you’re at the moment where you’re going to roll off pit road and go to battle. You’re going to battle to win the most coveted trophy in racing, the Harley J. Earl trophy.”

Do you think that SHR has a good balance of driver personalities and characteristics now with the addition of Ryan Preece?

“I think it does add a nice little flare of opposites. Having Kevin being in the sport for as long as he has, and then me having a moderate level of experience, and then having Chase Briscoe and Ryan Preece coming in as the young new guys. Chase is young and eager and a gasser – just constantly going for it. Ryan has been in the sport for a while and has had an opportunity to go Cup racing, but it wasn’t the greatest of opportunities, so here he is in a great opportunity here at Stewart-Haas Racing and he’s eager to prove himself. He’s going to be fired up and he’s going to be really aggressive. I think the combination of that experience and that young and fresh aggressiveness is a great combination, and it helps keep everybody in check.”

What can the fans look forward to during NASCAR’s 75th anniversary season?

“I think the fans will get what they’ve always gotten with NASCAR in 2023 – a high level of competition and a lot of new and exciting races. We’re going to be running wheel to wheel, fender to fender, rubbing side by side and competing at a very high level. And that’s what our sport delivers week in and week out every single year. I don’t think 2023 will be any different. Every single race team works tirelessly to bring the best racecars to the track, and this past year in 2022 saw the most parity that we had ever seen in NASCAR’s history. I think we’ll see even more of that in 2023.”

Why is the Daytona 500 such an iconic and much-anticipated race for you?

“First off, Daytona is always exciting for me. It’s my home racetrack, having grown up just two hours away in Tampa. I have a lot of childhood memories from going there with my family. To top it off, I’ve won there both in Xfinity and Cup cars. I just have a tremendous amount of fond memories of spectating at Daytona, even all the way back to my beginning days. I would go back and go-kart in Daytona. It’s always exciting because it brings back all those great memories. Not to mention, it’s the world center of racing. It’s the greatest place on earth to go race at. It’s the biggest race of the year, the one everyone wants to win. Your name is forever etched in history. There’s just no other race like it. It’s such a special race because of the prestige and the paycheck at the end. It’s the highest-paying race. Anybody who is alive and breathing knows of the Daytona 500. Even if you’re not a huge race fan or even a NASCAR fan, you know of the Daytona 500. There’s just so much history around this race that being a Daytona 500 champion is a really big deal.”

Do you feel like last year there was a changing of the guard with more young drivers winning, or was that just a product of the NextGen car’s first year?

“Well, a veteran won the championship, but I feel like the young guys certainly had a much more level playing field with the NextGen car. The guys who had a lot more experience didn’t have an advantage because the NextGen car brought on all sorts of nuances that we had not experienced. We had no notebook and, in the past, veterans knew exactly the feel that they were looking for in practice to be successful in the race. We didn’t have that feel with the NextGen car. We didn’t know what to look for. We didn’t know the feel we were looking for, and from a crew chief and engineering side, it was a big learning process to learn what these new cars needed for setups and aerodynamics. So I still think that the cagey veteran has caught up and won’t be shooting from the hip like we all were at the beginning of the season.”

Walk us through the final lap of the 2018 Daytona 500, when you were half a lap away from being crowned a Daytona 500 champion.

“I felt so confident. I knew that if I hit all of my gears perfectly, I would have a shot at it and I did. I looked in my mirror and saw everyone racing side by side and figured that I was in control of the race and, if I made the right move, I was going to be the winner of the Daytona 500. About halfway down the back straightaway, they were coming with a run and I pulled over to block it. In your head, you know it’s the Daytona 500 and you’re a mile and a half away from winning, so you’re going to do everything you know to try and win that race. I pulled over to block and put a pretty aggressive block on the No. 3. I knew that if I blocked high, he was going to go low. As soon as I blocked high, I knew I was going to have to immediately block low. When I blocked low, he turned against my back bumper and (I went) into the outside wall. I wrecked a mile away from winning the Daytona 500.”
