Horizon Hobby to Continue Partnership with Front Row Motorsports

Continued RC Innovation and Speed will Define Program with McDowell and Smith

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (January 12, 2023) – Horizon Hobby, a global leader in RC products, will return to Front Row Motorsports (FRM) for the 2023 season. The popular FRM partner will continue their support of the team highlighted by select primary events with the 2021 Daytona 500 champion, Michael McDowell and the 2022 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, Zane Smith. In addition, Horizon Hobby will continue to work with FRM and NASCAR in innovative ways to excite the ever-growing RC nation.

The Horizon Hobby race season will begin at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California on McDowell’s No. 34 Ford Mustang. This event is home to the surface product development and marketing team responsible for the first licensed NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series RC bodies in the likeness of the McDowell’s No. 34 Ford Mustang and Smith’s No. 38 Ford F-150 in 2022.

McDowell will again carry the Horizon Hobby scheme at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its road course race in August. The event serves as a homecoming event for the Champaign, Illinois-based company. Horizon Hobby will be an associate partner all season with the No. 34 team. RC enthusiast McDowell has enjoyed the partnership and is looking forward to working with company again.

“Last season I had the chance to partner with Horizon Hobby and go to their world-famous flying field called Eli Field with my family,” commented McDowell. “You can immediately tell that Horizon Hobby has great people working for them. And it’s helped me return by passion for RC and pass it along to my children, too. That was a highlight for me away from the track and you just can’t beat the products from Horizon Hobby.”

ARRMA, the brand that defines high-speed, super-tough RC action, will once again take to the track with Smith at St. Louis’ Worldwide Technology Raceway when the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series visits in June. Smith will be looking to take the ARRMA brand to victory lane, a place Smith visited four times in 2022 on his way to his first championship. The ARRMA brand will be an associate of the team all season.

“Horizon Hobby has been such a cool partner to work with,” said Smith. “My passion for racing and motorsports began with RC as a kid. Now, I have an ARRMA Infraction replica truck body hanging on my wall in my trophy room, right next to the 2022 Truck Series Championship trophy that they were a part of. I am excited to have them back on board as we chase another championship this year.”

Last season, Horizon Hobby hosted guests of local hobby shops across the country and NASCAR events each weekend and FRM driver’s and team members were frequently seen bashing, flying, or boating across social media. The fun will continue to 2023.

“We are ready to grow and bring new ideas to our partnership with Front Row Motorsports into 2023,” said Chris Dickerson, Chief Executive Officer, Horizon Hobby. “The program in 2022 grew in popularity with our customers and fans, and it’s an authentic partnership proven by the passion that Michael, Zane, and the NASCAR community have for our products. We can’t wait to see what this season brings.”

Fans are encouraged to login on www.horizonhobby.com to see their full range of brands and accessories that includes cars, boats, planes, batteries, chargers and more. Fans will also see products highlighted throughout the year on FRM’s, McDowell’s and Smith’s social media channels.

Car Collectors Russell and Dega Join Piston Scholars in Saturday’s Panel Discussion About Next Generation of Collector Car Technicians

GREENWICH, Conn (January 12, 2023) – The Piston Foundation, whose mission is to bring more young people into the trades of the collector car industry, will receive support from the Cavallino Classic on January 26-29, 2023, for the second straight year as a sponsored charity.

The 32nd edition of the “Concorso d’Eleganza” will celebrate the Ferrari marque, dedicating a class to the 100 years of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a race that is a significant part of Ferrari’s legendary racing pedigree. It will be held at the famed Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, and will feature a Piston Foundation discussion panel at noon on Saturday, January 28, entitled “The New Wave: Everything You Don’t Know About The Next Generation of Collector Car Technicians.”

Included on the panel, hosted by The Piston Foundation’s Manager of Development Sperry Hutchinson, will be Paul Russell, owner/manager of Paul Russell and Company in Essex, Massachusetts, which offers restoration, preservation and maintenance services; along with Jon Dega, who operates Rare Classics Restorations LLC in Boca Raton, Florida. where he and his team manage and care for four private collections and provide restoration services. https://paulrussell.com, www.americancoachbuilder.com, www.vignalecabriolet.com, www.chryslerboano.com, www.maxradpicturecars.com.

Russell and Dega will be joined on the panel by Jeff Mason, President/COO of The Piston Foundation, and three of the 10 recipients of the inaugural 2022 Piston Foundation Scholarships: Zoe Carmichael, Jacob Koehn and Sean Whetstone. All three are juniors at McPherson College and part of the Automotive Restoration Technology Program.

The students will also take part in assisting J.R. Amantea and his team from GT Motorcars of Wallingford, Connecticut, in preparing and placing client’s cars on the show field. The cars include an unrestored Ferrari 288 GTO, a Ferrari 512bbl and a low-mileage Ferrari F40. Amantea earned a 2017 and 2022 Sports Car Market “40 Under 40” award. https://www.gtmotorcarsllc.com/.

At Sunday’s Sports & Classic at Mar-a-Lago Club resort in Palm Beach, the students will walk the car show with car collector volunteers who will share career advice and guidance.

“Across the industry, there is a shortage of skilled workers,” Mason said. “Every shop can tell you about the difficulty of finding qualified technicians to hire. At the same time, young people with the interest, talent, and skill to be collector car technicians are unaware of the rewarding career opportunities the industry offers. The Piston Foundation is working to solve these problems through its scholarship and apprenticeship programs.

“In 2022, the Piston Foundation awarded scholarships to its inaugural class of Piston Scholars – 10 aspiring technicians who are each studying in an automotive technology program with the goal of building a career in vehicle restoration. Three of these impressive young people will join the Foundation at the Cavallino Classic to share their experiences with the collector car community.”

Mason added, “During the discussion we’ll talk about generational differences that affect the workforce and unpack the myths about bringing young workers into skilled trade careers. This is the first discussion panel on workforce development in the collector car industry. I think it’s going to start a lot of conversations in the community.”

The Piston Foundation is one of several sponsored charities at this year’s Cavallino Classic. Each charity benefits from the support of the Cavallino Foundation created by Canossa Events CEO Luigi Orlandini. “One of the very first tasks I set myself was to increase the charitable contributions of the Cavallino Classic, to continue supporting the organizations we have already helped in previous years, and to also launch some new initiatives,” said Orlandini, Chairman of Canossa and Cavallino. “As the lucky father of three kids, I strongly believe that the younger generation is the most important part of our future, and young people deserve our help to seize their opportunities in life.”

“We appreciate the continued support of the Cavallino Classic,” said Robert P. Minnick, CEO and Founder of The Piston Foundation, “They are an important and valued partner and we are excited to join them at this year’s event.”

Tickets for the Cavallino Classic may be purchased at https://cavallino.com/palm-beach-cavallino-classic/.

Cadillac reveals liveries of its three V-LMDh race cars

Bold colors on the new hybrid prototype represent Cadillac V-Series emblem

DETROIT (Jan. 12, 2023) — Cadillac today revealed the liveries for the three all-new electrified V-LMDh race cars that will make their competition debut at the Rolex 24 At Daytona this month.

The three distinctive designs represent the teams campaigning the all-new Cadillac V-LMDh, each with a different bold color from the Cadillac V-Series emblem.

“Cadillac is ready to compete against the very best in North America and internationally — including one of the world’s toughest races, the 24 Hours of Le Mans,” said Global Vice President of Cadillac Rory Harvey. “As Cadillac builds toward an all-electric future, the all-new V-LMDh furthers our dedication to exploring new advanced performance technologies.”

Cadillac Racing will be competing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with the No. 01 Cadillac Racing and No. 31 Whelen Engineering V-LMDh cars and in the FIA World Endurance Championship with the No. 2 Cadillac Racing V-LMDh. The three liveries share a V-Series graphic-and-color theme. Each car wears one of the primary colors of the V-Series logo, including No. 01 in gold, No. 2 in blue and red on the No. 31.

The V-LMDh is powered by Cadillac’s all-new LMC55R 5.5L DOHC V-8 that’s paired with the LMDh common hybrid system. Developed in-house, the naturally aspirated racing engine is rated up to 670 horsepower, per series specifications, and is backed by a seven-speed sequential gearbox.

Co-developed by Cadillac Racing, Cadillac Design and Dallara, the final Cadillac V-LMDh design was informed by the Project GTP Hypercar that debuted in June 2022. It incorporates distinctive Cadillac design elements such as vertical lighting and floating blades.

“From an aesthetic point of view, the LMDh regulations allowed us to create a vision for the car that is clearly Cadillac,” said Chris Mikalauskas, lead exterior creative designer, Cadillac. “And that’s really exciting for fans and for people who are true enthusiasts, every car is unique.”

The team

Each Cadillac Racing driver contributed to the V-LMDh’s development. Earl Bamber, Alex Lynn and Richard Westbrook will co-drive the No. 2 Cadillac V-LMDh in FIA WEC competition, including the centenary Le Mans 24 Hours, and the Rolex 24 At Daytona, where the car will compete as No. 02. The No. 2 is in homage to the first Cadillac entry at Le Mans in 1950, Briggs Cunningham’s “Le Monstre.”

Additionally, Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande will drive the No. 01 Cadillac V-LMDh in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. They will be joined by six-time INDYCAR champion and four-time Rolex 24 At Daytona winner Scott Dixon for the 2023 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Pipo Derani and Alexander Sims will drive the No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac V-LMDh in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Throughout the season they will be joined by Jack Aitken.

A history of racing success

Cadillac’s expanded 2023 racing program builds on a long history of racing success. In fact, Cadillac is the only high-volume luxury American manufacturer to compete at Le Mans for the overall win since 1969.

The brand has competed since 2017 at the forefront of American sports car racing in the Cadillac DPi-V.R. Before that, Cadillac Racing scored several wins in the Pirelli World Challenge. Recent highlights include:

  • Winning the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship three times: 2021, 2018 and 2017
  • Winning the Rolex 24 at Daytona four consecutive times: 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017
  • Winning the Michelin North American Endurance Cup four consecutive times: 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017
  • Earning five Pirelli World Challenge Manufacturer Championships (2015, 2014, 2013, 2007 and 2005) and five Driver Championships (2015, 2014, 2013, 2012 and 2005). This rich history influenced the Project GTP Hypercar that previewed the all-new Cadillac V-LMDh prototype race car. It is Cadillac’s third-generation prototype race car and represents the start of the fifth generation of the brand’s storied V-Series.

Since 2004, V-Series has embodied Cadillac’s commitment to performance, on and off the track. When it comes to road-going models, the lineup has grown recently to include the 2023 Escalade-V. It joined the CT4-V and CT5-V, along with the track-capable CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing.

The Rolex 24 At Daytona kicks off an action-packed racing season that will see the trio of race cars continue to compete around the world. Following Daytona, Cadillac Racing will compete at the 1000 Miles of Sebring on March 17 with the No. 2 car, with the No. 01 and 31 competing in the Twelve Hours of Sebring on March 18.

Harvick To Retire at End of 2023 Season

‘The Closer’ Will Close a NASCAR Cup Series Career Spanning More Than Two Decades

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (Jan. 12, 2023) – The 2023 season will be Kevin Harvick’s 23rd and final year as a NASCAR Cup Series driver. The 47-year-old racer will retire after the season finale Nov. 5 at Phoenix Raceway.

Known as “The Closer,” Harvick begins his last season in NASCAR’s premier division tied for ninth on the Cup Series’ all-time win list with 60 point-paying victories. He is only 99 laps shy of leading a staggering 16,000 laps in his career – one of only 11 drivers in the history of the sport to do so – and the Bakersfield, California-native is slated to make his 800th career Cup Series start April 23 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

“There is absolutely nothing else in the world that I enjoy doing more than going to the racetrack, and I’m genuinely looking forward to this season,” said Harvick, driver of the No. 4 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing. “But as I’ve gone through the years, I knew there would come a day where I had to make a decision. When would it be time to step away from the car?

“I’ve sought out people and picked their brains. When I asked them when they knew it was the right time, they said it’ll just happen, and you’ll realize that’s the right moment. You’ll make a plan and decide when it’s your last year.

“It’s definitely been hard to understand when that right moment is because we’ve been so fortunate to run well. But sometimes there are just other things going on that become more important and, for me, that time has come.”

Harvick’s decision to make the 2023 season his last comes as the father of two eyes more family time. Together with wife, DeLana, they’ll continue to visit racetracks, but Harvick won’t be wearing a firesuit. His 10-year-old son, Keelan, is an avid karter who races internationally, and his 5-year-old daughter, Piper, is already following in the family’s tire tracks, wheeling a go-kart of her own.

“In the last year, I think I’ve seen Keelan race three times while he’s been in Europe. I go to the go-kart track with Piper and she makes twice as many strides in a day while I’m there than she would in a day when I’m not there. It takes a lot of time to organize the level of racing they’re doing, and to be around that is important to me,” Harvick said.

Karting is where Harvick’s career began. He was five when he first started racing in and around Southern California. Twenty years later, after competing and winning on the NASCAR Southwest Tour, earning the 1998 NASCAR Winston West championship, advancing to the NASCAR Truck Series and then the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Harvick was in Cup. However, it was under incredibly trying circumstances and immense pressure.

A 25-year-old Harvick was thrust into the national spotlight and tabbed to do the impossible – fill the void left by the passing of the sport’s icon, Dale Earnhardt. A crash on the final lap of the 2001 Daytona 500 had taken Earnhardt’s life. In the midst of great personal sorrow, team owner Richard Childress needed to steady his organization. He chose Harvick, an up-and-coming racer who had a breakout season in 2000 by winning three races for his team in the second-tier Busch Series, known today as the Xfinity Series.

The No. 3, made famous by Earnhardt, was changed to the No. 29, and Harvick made his Cup Series debut on Feb. 25 at North Carolina Speedway in Rockingham. Harvick started 36th that Sunday at Rockingham, but rain washed over the track just 51 laps into the 393-lap race. The race resumed at 11 a.m. ET on Monday, whereupon Harvick drove to a solid 14th-place finish. He then traveled to Las Vegas on Tuesday, got married on Wednesday, and was back in a racecar on Friday, competing in both the Xfinity Series and Cup Series events at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After finishing eighth on Sunday to score his first career top-10 in the Cup Series, Harvick headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway where on March 11, 2001 the first of his 60 Cup Series wins was secured in just his third career start.

“Dale’s passing changed our sport forever, and it changed my life forever and the direction it took. It took me a long time to really get comfortable to really even think about things that happened that day,” Harvick said.

“Looking back on it now, you realize the importance of getting in the Cup car, and then we wound up winning my first race at Atlanta in the 29 car after Dale’s death. The significance and the importance of keeping that car on the racetrack and winning that race early at Atlanta – knowing now what it meant to the sport, and just that moment in general of being able to carry on, was so important.”

Wise beyond his age, Harvick was able to compartmentalize and perform. In addition to running the remainder of the Cup Series schedule and winning again on July 15 at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois, Harvick ran the entire Xfinity Series schedule, winning five races and cruising to the championship.

“We just found a way to make it work, and that’s what we did all year long,” said Harvick, who won a second Xfinity Series title in 2006, again running the full Cup and Xfinity schedules.

Making it work is what Harvick has done throughout his career. This was evident from day one at Stewart-Haas Racing, where he joined the team in December 2013 after spending 14 seasons with Childress.

Teamed with crew chief Rodney Childers, Harvick came out of the gate strong and never let up. It began with a dominating preseason test at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway and ended with an emphatic victory in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway that earned Harvick his long coveted Cup Series championship.

Today, Harvick and Childers are the longest-tenured active driver-crew chief pairing in the Cup Series garage, a 10-year partnership that has netted 37 points-paying wins.

“Rodney and I are pretty much the same age with very similar backgrounds, as far as racing goes. But we’re kind of opposites in that he’s very calm, cool and quiet, and I’m kind of rambunctious and full of excitement. That pairing has brought a lot of respect just because I know his demeanor, he knows my demeanor, and it’s a good balance in the middle,” Harvick said.

“We know each of us can do the job, and we believe in that and each other, and a lot of that comes down to conversations, being able to communicate. We communicate well, and that’s what makes a good pairing – being able to talk and communicate and put those conversations into action. And when you’re wrong, understanding when you’re wrong, and working through that and not have anybody’s feelings get hurt and start pointing fingers That’s what’s made it work.”

The command Harvick has shown behind the wheel and outside of the racecar was one of the main reasons why Tony Stewart, co-owner of Stewart-Haas Racing, wanted Harvick on his race team.

“I competed against Kevin for a long time and I was so happy to finally have him a part of our race team,” said Stewart, the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion who co-owns Stewart-Haas Racing with Haas Automation founder Gene Haas. “He’s incredibly reliable – consistent and calculated on the track with a drive to always be better. That’s what you want in a teammate. He knows what he needs to be successful, and his will to win helped elevate our entire company.”

Stewart retired as a NASCAR driver at the end of the 2016 season. His hope for Harvick’s final season is sanguine and straightforward.

“I want Kevin to savor every lap this season, to compete like hell and to take it all in. He’s made all of us at Stewart-Haas Racing incredibly proud and we want to make his last season his best season.”

Harvick’s final season kicks off with the non-points Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum Feb. 4-5 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum before the official start of the 2023 campaign with the 65th annual Daytona 500 Feb. 19 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

TOMMY DUNKEL MAKES HIS FIRST CHILI BOWL START ON THURSDAY

Tommy Dunkel's beautiful ride for this week's Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. Dunkel photo.

(Menifee, CA, January 11, 2023) The next time somebody tells you dreams do not come true, we ask that you have them call Tommy Dunkel. Last Thanksgiving weekend he had a dream come true when he raced in the sprint car portion of the Turkey Night Grand Prix at the Ventura Raceway. Thursday night, Dunkel will realize another racing dream when he takes a green flag for his first-ever midget race in the 37th Annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

A year ago, Dunkel had no reason to believe that he would be competing in this week’s race that is staged inside the SageNet Center, which is one of the largest clearspan buildings in the world. In fact, the plan was for him to just go watch the race in person. He had only seen the Chili Bowl while watching on the big screen from his home. A major reason to believe he would not be competing in Tulsa is the fact that he had never raced a midget before. However, the thought process gears shifted into action and the Southern California driver figured that if he was going, he might as well try to race. And he is going to do just that! He will be in the Jet Motorsports #14E Dunkel Farms/Inland Rigging/Osborn Speed and Machine/United Asset Sales/Southside Mowers/Boss Chassis/Esslinger for this week’s race.

“It was a few months back and I was talking with a few of my friends about just coming out to watch,” the friendly Dunkel said. “I decided if I was just coming out to watch, with all of the airfare and expense, let’s see if I can find a ride. That is when I was able to connect with Eric Fenton of Jet Motorsports in Tulsa. We made the call and he said he had a ride for me, so, here we are.”

“This will be my first race ever in a midget. I have about 70 – 80 laps in a midget just practicing. I went with Jimmy May to Ventura a couple of weeks back just hot lapping. This (Chili Bowl) will be my first time taking a green flag in a midget. Practice went good. I started driving it like a sprint car which is a no-no. I was quickly corrected by Jimmy. He got me headed in the right direction. By the end of the day, we were pretty close to race pace. Jimmy was pretty impressed and thought I got up to speed pretty quick.”

Perhaps his urge to race at the Chili Bowl increased after an impressive run in the sprint car portion of Turkey Night. On that chilly November night, he not only qualified for the feature, but he came from 22nd to finish 13th. Performing well in that prestigious race has boosted Dunkel’s confidence going into the Chili Bowl and he enters the event with his eyes wide open.

“It is a pretty big milestone for me,” the Menifee, California-based driver said last week. “It has had my nerves on edge the past couple weeks as you can imagine leading up to it. I am looking forward to learning and watching the fast guys. Get my feet wet in a midget. You never know where we will go from here. I figured what a great way to race a midget for the first time.”

Racing against many of the greatest dirt track drivers in the world as well as stars from many different disciplines of racing has not been lost on Dunkel. He has a very realistic look at the event in the “Sooner State.”

“I just want to get in some good laps,” he said. “I would like to go as far as possible. Obviously, the idea to make the show is #1. We will see. I obviously have very little experience in a midget, but I am a patient driver. Sometimes I tend to let the race come to me. If I have some good luck and the lord willing, we will go as far as we can on Saturday.”

Like the 370 other pre-entered drivers for the Chili Bowl, Dunkel got in a couple of practice sessions on the track on Sunday. The sessions were brief. Like about four laps each brief! There was a lot to learn, but not a lot of time was allotted for educating oneself on the track and its idiosyncrasies.

“Practice went well,” Dunkel said. “It was a pretty big eye-opener actually getting on the track. Seeing it and watching it on TV is one thing but rolling out there was a whole different animal. The car felt good. It was more of me just trying to get acquainted with driving a midget. We had two sessions. The first session was just trying to shake it down and get comfortable. You only get four laps and four laps go quick. I would say by lap four I was kind of finding my groove a little bit. That kind of gave me a good idea of what I needed to do for session two.”

“We went out for session two, and the car was pretty good. But the track was slick to a curb. Coming from sprint cars, it is one thing to bang the cushion with a big old right rear tire. Hitting it with this little bitty midget tire was a little bit uneasy for me. I cheated the cushion a little bit. If I can find the cushion sooner on race day, we are going to pick up some time. We have speed, it is just getting me a little more comfortable in the car and kind of finding my groove sooner. We are pretty dang close for a guy who has never driven a midget before.”

Once the Chili Bowl is over, Dunkel will continue with prep for the 2023 USAC West Coast Sprint Car Series. His first race in the series will be on February 25th on the dirt track at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield.

Dunkel would like to thank the following for making his racing efforts possible. Inland Rigging, Dunkel Farms, United Asset Sales, Osborne Speed & Machine, and Southside Mowers. If you or your company would like to join him for a full year of USAC Sprint Car competition in 2023, please give him a call or send an email to 951-901-5082 or TomDunkel@inlandrigging.com.

Austin Hill and Dynamic, Multi-Partner Lineup Return to Richard Childress Racing for Sophomore NASCAR Xfinity Series Campaign

Bennett Family of Companies, Global Industrial, United Rentals, Alsco Uniforms, and Realtree to be Featured on the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro SS

WELCOME, N.C. (January 11, 2023) – Richard Childress Racing announced today Austin Hill will return as driver of the No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro SS to chase a championship in the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series season. Bennett Family of Companies, Global Industrial, United Rentals, and Alsco Uniforms will continue as partners for Hill’s sophomore campaign, while long-standing RCR partner, Realtree, joins the fold. Hill, who earned Rookie of the Year honors, two victories, and a sixth-place finish in the driver point standings during his rookie year, remains focused to improve those results this season.

Leading the charge for Hill and the No. 21 team will once again be crew chief Andy Street. Street enters his fourth year as crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, posting three wins (Myatt Snider in 2021 and Hill in 2022) and two playoff berths in the past two seasons.

“I’m excited to return to RCR this season to compete for a Xfinity Series championship once again,” said Hill. “My rookie season was a success, but I know that our No. 21 team can improve even more with our first year together under our belt. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity that Richard and everyone at RCR continues to give me. To not only be back with Andy and my crew guys, but to have our loyal partners return is a huge asset to our program. I can’t wait to get to Daytona and kick off the 2023 season the same way we started last season.”

After successful campaigns and results last year, each of the partners on the No. 21 team will further increase their team partnership in dynamic and innovative ways.

Hill looks to defend his season-opening victory as the NASCAR Xfinity Series season kicks off at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, February 18. BRADEN CHIARAMONTE MAKES CHILI BOWL DEBUT ON FRIDAY

(El Cajon, CA, January 11, 2022) Two weeks after contesting the Tulsa Shootout in the massive SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Southern California teenage racer Braden Chiaramonte will return this week to compete in the biggest midget race in the world, the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals. For the highly anticipated race, he will be wheeling the Pete Davis-owned #00B Hot Head Engine Heaters/Esslinger Engineering/RTL Traffic/AM Ortega/Spike Chassis/Esslinger midget.

The accomplished racer was one of 370 pre-entered competitors who practiced on Sunday for the 37th running of the famed event. Chiaramonte will be back on the track to race in his preliminary night on Friday, January 13th. He will then come back for the finale 24 hours later. In the yearly January race, the 15-year-old will be battling against drivers from every discipline in American motorsports including NASCAR, Indy Cars, NHRA, and everything in between. The tight quarter-mile track has seating for 15,000 fans and draws approximately 80,000 attendees over six nights. In addition to the fans at the track, the race draws attention to the drivers and sponsors from viewers around the world on the Flo Racing Network.

One year ago this month, Chiaramonte had not only never raced in the Chili Bowl, but he had also never raced a midget! However, things rapidly changed. By year’s end, six of the 39 races he started were in midgets. His first race in the powerful lightweight cars came on April 16th when he made his midget debut in one of Matt Streeter’s #14s in a USAC Western Midget race at the Bakersfield Speedway. The unflappable driver shocked everyone in sight when he established a nearly full-straightaway lead in his heat race before succumbing to the defending series champion on the next to last lap and finishing second. Later that night he came home ninth in his first-ever midget main event.

One month later he was back in Streeter’s car at the beachside Ventura Raceway. On that night he placed seventh in the main event. He competed in one more Western States Midget race on June 18th at the Merced Speedway. Once again, Chiaramonte impressed race watchers when he came home in 10th place giving him three top-10 finishes in the first three times he sat in a midget.

After his three midget races in California, Chiaramonte stepped up his game to the USAC National Midget Series with two races in July and another in August. The July dates were at the Jefferson County Speedway in Fairbury, Nebraska. Competing in the number one midget series in the world, Chiaramonte, who was driving the famous “Trench Shoring” #25, made the A main each night. He placed 18th in the opener. Twenty-four hours later he finished 16th.

Three weeks after competing in the “Cornhusker State,” Chiaramonte journeyed to the “Mecca” of racetracks in the world, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for the BC39. Located inside turn four, mere feet away from where the Indianapolis 500 has taken place since 1911, the young driver came home with a fifth-place finish in the D main.

In addition to his midget races, the El Cajon, California-based competitor also competed in micros, lightning sprints, and winged 360 sprint cars in 2022. He took a pair of wins in the POWRi Southwest Lightning Sprint Car Series. He shocked the racing public by quickly adapting to a full-size winged 360 sprint car. In addition to showing impressive speed in the powerful machine, he came from the back to place eighth in the final of the “Fall Winged 360 Nationals” at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California.

Fans can see every lap that Chiaramonte contests at the Chili Bowl live on Flo Racing. For details on how to see the accomplished teen in action at Tulsa, please use the following link https://www.floracing.com/.

As the full 2023 season is just around the corner, Chiaramonte and his team are making plans for a busy year. If you are interested in becoming a marketing partner with one of the most talented and personable young drivers in the sport, please feel free to call or e-mail Daniel Chiaramonte mailto:dchiaramonte@rtltraffic.com or (619) 988 7563.

Chiaramonte would like to thank the following marketing partners for making his 2022 racing season possible. RTL Traffic Control and Equipment Rentals, AM Ortega, Impact Racing, and AIM Sports Data.

Automatic Racing Returns to a Two-Car Aston Martin Vantage GT4 Team for IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge Four-Hour Season-Opening Race at Daytona International Speedway

Jim Jonsin, Tom Long and Brett Sandberg Co-Drive No. 9 “No Limits” Aston Martin Vantage GT4 Alongside Automatic Racing Regulars Rob Ecklin and Ramin Abdolvahabi in No. 09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin Vantage GT4

ORLANDO, Florida (January 11, 2023) – Automatic Racing returns to a two-car team for this month’s season-opening IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge four-hour race at Daytona International Speedway (DIS) where the trio of Jim Jonsin, Tom Long and Brett Sandberg will co-drive the No. 9 “No Limits” Aston Martin Vantage GT4 alongside Automatic Racing’s longtime lineup of Rob Ecklin and Ramin Abdolvahabi in the No. 09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin Vantage GT4.

“We are super happy to have Jim Jonsin with Rebel Rock join us for the Daytona opener,” said Automatic Racing Team Owner David Russell said. “Jim and I have been talking about putting something together and I have always had a lot of respect for what he’s been able to do in the past. He’s a super entrepreneur and understands how to properly assemble business-to-business platforms in the motorsports paddock.”

The No. 9 Aston Martin will be the on-track centerpiece of a soon-to-be-announced promotion for a Jonsin-produced upcoming album on the Rebel Rock/EMPIRE label. Jonsin is an accomplished and Grammy Award winning record producer, songwriter, DJ and music industry businessman who added motorsports a decade ago to his successful Rebel Rock lineup of enterprises that includes Rebel Rock Entertainment and Rebel Rock Productions.

“I have to say, I’m more than excited to be back racing with my friends at IMSA,” Jonsin said. “I love being at the races and spending time watching as a fan, but to be able to get behind the wheel again with seasoned drivers such as my friends Brett Sandberg and Tom Long, I couldn’t think of a better way to get back into racing. Not to mention my favorite event is the Rolex 24 weekend, at my favorite track, Daytona International Speedway. I am thankful for the opportunity to race an Aston Martin GT4 in the Pilot Challenge, prepared by Automatic Racing and David Russell. Racing and music have always been huge passions of mine and I am looking forward to both driving and sharing some news about our latest Rebel Rock release at Daytona that brings these two passions together. I already have to give big thanks to my friends and sponsors at zMax, Podium 1, EMPIRE and Rebel Rock Productions in addition to some other great groups and people we will acknowledge and recognize at next week’s press conference at Daytona.”

Russell is a long-time IMSA, GRAND-AM and international sports car racing competitor as both a team owner and driver. Under his leadership, Automatic won what was then the GRAND-AM Grand Sports (GS) class championship in 2007 and finished third in GS in 2008. Long and Sandberg have been among Russell’s drivers over the years and, along with Ecklin and Abdolvahabi, return to a familiar team at Daytona.

“We are equally excited to have my good friends Tom Long and Brett Sandberg join Jim as co-drivers and coaches,” Russell said. “It is also fantastic to have Rob and Ramin back this year between Michelin Pilot Challenge and the new VP Racing SportsCar Challenge series. I am fortunate enough to have Rob drive with us for 12 years now and Ramin for seven years. Let’s go!”

Long raced early in his career with Automatic racing and scored a Michelin Pilot Challenge class victory at Daytona in 2018 in addition to co-driving to a third-place GT finish in the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona.

“I’m honored to be back with Automatic Racing and Jim Jonsin in the No Limits Aston Martin Vantage,” Long said. “I’m fortunate to have a long-standing history with David Russell and Automatic Racing, as they were my first full-time professional ride in the series. I’ve shared the track with Jim and Brett over the last 10 years, and it’s a great fit. All the pieces of the puzzle have their own unique story and history to me, and now we’re putting them all together to complete a very exciting partnership. I have to give a special thanks to David and Jim for allowing me to be a part of this opportunity.”

Sandberg returns to Automatic Racing after last racing with the team nearly a decade ago.

“I am really looking forward to coming back to Automatic Racing,” Sandberg said. “It has been a long time since I was last in a car with them. We’ve always had good experiences together, and I have nothing but great things to say about the team and Dave Russell’s program that he has been running for the last few decades. I’m thrilled to be back in the car with Jim, and I am eager for the program to get underway. Looking forward to these upcoming weekends at Daytona!”

Pilot Challenge teams and Drivers will be on track for five practice sessions during the Roar Before the Rolex 24 At Daytona test session weekend, January 20 – 22. They will be back on track on Wednesday, January 25, for the start of the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona. The four-hour Michelin Pilot Endurance Challenge opener is scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m. EST on Friday, January 27th.

Cadillac Racing: Rory Harvey Zoom transcript

DETROIT (Jan. 11, 2023) — Cadillac Racing enters a new era of prototype sports car racing with the competition debut of the Cadillac V-LMDh in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Three Cadillac V-LMDh race cars will attempt to secure the pole Jan. 22 for the 61st edition of the race on Jan. 28-29.

Global Vice President of Cadillac Rory Harvey participated in a Zoom media conference hosted by IMSA with other OEM principals. Transcript of Harvey sections of the Q&A:

HOW DOES THIS SPLATFORM SUPPORT CADILLAC’S MOVE TOWARD AND ALL-ELECTRIC FUTURE?

“We’ve had a long association with the IMSA championship. I’ve personally been privileged to pick up the Manufacturers Championship trophy on a couple of occasions. It gives us the ability to showcase what we do from a technology perspective, from a performance perspective, from and aerodynamics perspective, etc. It gives us the ability to transfer technology across to our road cars, whether it be looking at the aerodynamics as an example. Cadillac has our V-Series and our V-Series Blackwings, which are very successful. We work with IMSA to make sure we can maximize this opportunity and make sure we can replicate some of this on the road. We did the Track Editions last year that sold out virtually immediately, which shows in terms of the target audience that it dovetails into what we want to achieve. If you look at the powertrains this year and our stated ambition to be all-electric by 2030, we have the 5.5-liter V8 and the hybrid technology, so from that point of view we’re looking to learn, develop and look to further take those lessons into our EV portfolio as we move forward.”

AS ANDRETTI CADILLAC MOVES FORWARD WITH A FORMULA ONE EFFORT, COULD THAT HAVE ANY AFFECT ON THE LMDH PROGRAM?

“No, we’re super excited about that opportunity as well. The process is in the very early stages; we’re looking to submit an Expression of Interest. From our perspective, it will complement what we do in this series. We don’t see it impacting this series in any way.”

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF CADILLAC IN LMDH?

“We have a pedigree of motor racing. It’s well over 70 years since we entered motorsport and have been very successful in a number of series over the years. The U.S. is massively important to us and the IMSA series is very important to us. In addition, we’re looking to complement it with the commonization of the regulations so we can compete in the World Endurance Championship. We sell Cadillacs throughout the globe and that gives us greater coverage and greater reach in geographical locations where we also look to perform. And then being able to complement what we do here with the opportunity, should we be successful, of entering Formula One. We see that as another piece of the jigsaw puzzle and very fitting to the Cadillac brand and the heritage of both Cadillac Racing and General Motors Racing. It’s a big commitment. We believe that the partnership that we discussed last week is wonderful and gives us the ability to perform. We believe that we have a blend of skills sets across the organizations that means we can use the expertise from both parties to put together a package that ensures that we’ll be competitive.”

WHERE ARE THINGS WITH SUPPLY CHAINS; IS IT GETTING BETTER?

“I’d love to say that everything is normalized and things are back at the levels where we think it should be, but it isn’t. Progress continues to be made. I think the speed bumps in the system seem to be small and less frequent, so we are definitely seeing progress. If you look at it in terms of vehicles we build for the road, GM continues to build stock. We’re still at very low levels compared to the traditional levels of stock overall, as I think most manufacturers are, but from our perspective there are some lessons there and we do believe we can work more efficiently and more effectively going forward. We’re taking some of those lessons and applying them to the supply chain going forward. Things are slowly starting to improve and becoming more stable. We’re getting greater line of sight in terms of what product availability is there going forward, what challenges we may have. I have to say the team has done an outstanding job in terms of ensuring that we can drive our performance forward. For North America year end as an example, Cadillac was able to grow 13.9 percent last year, which was a strong performance out of the luxury brands in the U.S.”

IS HAVING THE WEC CAR AT DAYTONA A NUMBERS GAME?

“We’ve run multiple cars in past seasons. We have the partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing and Action Express Racing – two valued partners with a lot of experience. We’re going into the World Endurance Championship as well; we will have one of those vehicles running full time in the WEC. From our perspective, it’s good to have the coverage of the three vehicles, bearing in mind that we will be competing both of the series this year.”

IS THE FORMULA COST-EFFECTIVE?

“We evaluate our performance both on and off the track. We look at the costs of the program and there are some cost efficiencies in terms of the program and we’re very happy to work with the teams and to bring exciting racing together. This season, with some new entrants into the event, it’s going to be super exciting. The fans are going to absolutely love it and it gives us the ability to showcase our vehicles. We’re happy with the championship overall.”

WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF SOMETHING YOU HOPE TO LEARN TO CARRY OVER TO THE ROAD CAR SIDE?

“There are multiple things that we take from the program, whether it be the revisions to the regulations, the 5.5-liter V8 and the hybridization of that as an example. Those are standard. We still get the ability to learn from that. If you look at our vehicles, they were designed by our design team, they were designed for racing but it gives us great ability to be able to further our experience in terms of aerodynamics. We take those learnings and portray them on our performance vehicles albeit that we’re in that transition phase between internal combustion engines and going all EV. Racing has been part of our DNA. Performance vehicles on the road have been part of our DNA and we will have that going forward in terms of performance. From our perspective, there are so many things that we translate whether it be now with our internal combustion engines or whether it be in the future with some of the learnings. Some of the things will be common in terms of aerodynamics, etc., and some things will be very new such as the EV powertrains compared to ICE vehicles. So we are in that transition and the regulations that have been put forth here enable us to combine our internal combustion engine with hybridization, so we will take learnings out of that and we will apply those learnings to our existing vehicles and our future vehicle portfolio.”

WHAT’S BEEN THE REACTION FROM THE COMPANY AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE F1 EFFORT AND WHERE DOES IT STAND?

“We think that in terms of the partnership between Andretti and General Motors and Cadillac that we have a very good proposition. We wouldn’t have gone forward in announcing our intent to submit an Expression of Interest if we didn’t think it was a proposition that fulfilled the requirements and give us the ability to succeed. From that point of view, there is a long way to go yet in this process. The Expression of Interest and the details have not come out exactly yet, so we have that to go as a first step. We’ll need to submit our Expression of Interest and then see how the process plays out. I don’t want to speculate in terms of some of the articles that have been written. Internally, we’re super excited. I know from the Andretti organization’s perspective they are super excited and we will do our very best in terms of our Expression of Interest and be able to showcase what we believe that we could bring to Formula One.”

HOW INVOLVED IS THE MANUFACTURER IN HELPING THE TEAMS DELIVER A CHAMPIONSHIP?

“We work very closely with the teams. We have our 5.5-liter V8 powertrain, which is developed by our Performance Engineering division in Pontiac (Michigan). We work very closely with the chassis provider Dallara as well. It’s about getting the best from the strengths the teams bring along with the strengths of the OEM. It’s about blending those together so you have as good a competitive proposition as you can. It’s integral that we all work together to blend those experiences to come up with the most competitive proposition. Activation, as an example, whether it be social media, whether it be our V-Series websites, and our drivers and teams are very happy to support those events as well. In terms of the Rolex 24, we’ll have all of our expertise on site. The teams have their expertise on site. We collectively work together to optimize what we see during the race. The first thing is to make sure we have a fast car. The second thing is to make sure it’s durable. The third thing is to make sure we have contingencies should any unplanned incidences occur. We’re working hard to make sure we can maximize, but there’s no doubt on occasion there is course correction in an event, particularly the length of 24 hours.
