NASCAR Announces Partnership With RealResponse

Safe and confidential reporting service for NASCAR Industry launched this fall

Daytona Beach, FL and Charlotte, NC (December 15, 2022) – NASCAR and RealResponse, the award-winning reporting platform for athletic teams and organizations, today announced a partnership that provides NASCAR and national series industry members with a safe and anonymous tool to secure feedback, report concerns and seek assistance from professionals in countless areas of expertise.

RealResponse is the industry leader in providing a platform for safe and secure feedback, monitoring and anonymous reporting. The partnership will provide any NASCAR national series team member with the ability to confidentially reach out to express concerns or report issues via a customized communication tool. NASCAR personnel receive the encrypted and anonymous messages directly and designate a subject matter expert to respond immediately to the concern.

Concerns can range from competition-based items such as gambling or integrity, safety and security, abuse or harassment, or for seeking mental health support. The identity of the industry member reaching out is protected through the RealResponse reporting program, ensuring anonymity.

“NASCAR wanted to be proactive in providing a tool for industry members such as drivers, crew and other team personnel to safely reach out for help,” said Meghan Miley, Managing Director of Racing Operations for NASCAR. “In partnering with RealResponse, we now have a confidential method for reporting. We don’t have a limit to the types of reports industry members can submit, and we can ensure their privacy as they reach out for anonymous support at any time.”

RealResponse was launched in 2016 by former NCAA Division I student-athlete David Chadwick, who saw a need for athletes to have a safe and confidential way to bring feedback to their athletic administration. Today, numerous sport governing bodies, organizations and teams such MLB, the NFLPA and NFL teams, USA Swimming and other Olympic organizations, the National Women’s Soccer League, and a multitude of colleges and universities work with RealResponse to provide the same service.

“We are honored to engage in this historic partnership with NASCAR,” said David Chadwick, Founder and CEO of RealResponse. “NASCAR executives recognize the responsibility to make the sport of racing safer, more inclusive and more valuable in the eyes every stakeholder involved in the sport. Their embrace of RealResponse sends a clear message that the health and safety of its community members away from the track is as important as safety of drivers on race day.”

The program was introduced to the NASCAR national series teams in October.

Dream of driving at Daytona to come true for blue collar racer Kayla Surles

Surles is one of four competitors who will drive for Mullins Racing in ARCA Pre-Season Practice at Daytona

Kayla Surles is paving her own path into the ARCA Menards Series and she hopes that will begin when she takes part in the ARCA Menards Series pre-race practice at Daytona International Speedway in January with Mullins Racing.

The 21-year-old from Fredericksburg, Virginia, has become one of the dominant drivers on the Modified racing scene in the Commonwealth. She picked up six wins at Dominion Raceway, finishing runner-up in division standings at the four-tenths-mile track.

However, it’s not just her on track success that’s earned her the opportunity to go to Daytona, it’s also her off-track work ethic. She is also the shop manager at Bugsy’s Repair, the commercial automotive repair shop owned by husband-and-wife Willie and Dinah Mullins, who also own the Mullins Racing ARCA team.

“I’ll go anywhere from helping to sand the trucks and helping the painters get those ready to paint, to mechanics and welding and all that,” Surles said. “Last year, they had talked about driving their ARCA car before the test because of all the help during the pandemic, and I told them, ‘I don’t want you to put me in the car because you think that’s what I want for all the help, I want you to put me in the car because you think I might do well in it.’ They said ‘alright, show us what you got’ and it was kind of a breakout year for me. I had one win last year, and this year everything kind of came together.”

Willie Mullins, who finished second in the 2018 ARCA Menards Series season opener at Daytona and is a veteran of 25 ARCA Menards Series starts, views Surles as an irreplaceable member of his team.

“At 21 years old, the amount of forethought that she already has is incredible,” Willie Mullins said. “Her ability to look at our workload and see what needs to be done next is what you expect from a much older employee. Because she works with us, I work on the cars after work, and she started coming around and helping. She mentioned wanting to run for us and needed to prove herself. She got six wins at Dominion and became one of the dominant drivers in Modified racing in Virginia.

“She came in and showed performance through the entire year and proven who she is. She’s learned from her mistakes and became a better driver. She’s proven her work ethic at our business, her team and our team, she’s 100 percent dedicated to whatever is in front of her.”

Surles’ dream of racing began as a child in Flagler Beach, Florida, a short drive away from the Daytona International Speedway. Growing up, she attended races at The World Center of Speed, and her passion for racing led her to begin chasing down a dream of one day competing on the sport’s biggest stage.

From there, she would pursue a racing career, competing in Kart racing and eventually moving up to the IMCA-style Modifieds raced at Dominion Raceway.

“I actually had a friend that started go-kart racing and my dad took me to one of the races,” Surles recalled. “I was super competitive as a kid and I wanted to race with them and see if I could do better, and it kind of spiraled into what it is now. I started off in go karts and it was an odd year, I was either winning or being wrecked and there was no in between. It was one of those years where you think, ‘Do I still want to do this? Do I want to continue to get wrecked and spend money for a handful of wins or do I want to see if another sport will pique my interest?’

“Then, one of my dad’s buddies hit him up and said, ‘hey I just bought this Modified and I want to see what Kayla can do,’ so we went straight from dirt karts to Modifieds.”

Surles has scored seven wins in the Modifieds and comes into Daytona with momentum after a runner-up finish in the Thanksgiving Classic at Southern National Motorsports Park in Lucama, North Carolina.

“It’s super cool to get to practice an ARCA car at Daytona,” Surles commented. “It’s something, when I was growing up in Florida 20 minutes north of Daytona, I wanted to go to the track, I want to be inside the pits. I was always involved with cars with my dad. I wanted to see what was going on. When I moved up here, it all came true. I’m super excited. A bunch of my family that lives in Florida is going to get to see me drive a car. I’m so excited.”

Surles’ plans for 2023 involve more than just practice at Daytona. She plans to continue racing Modifieds and make a few starts in a Limited Late Model at Dominion Raceway. She also hopes to make her ARCA Menards Series race debut later in the season.

“Dinah and Willie are starting a driver development program in the Limited Late Model, and they might put me in a few races in that,” Surles explained. “We are trying to figure some financials out to be able to run in a short track ARCA race or two, we just need more sponsors to do that.”

The ARCA Menards Series pre-race practice at Daytona International Speedway takes place on Friday, January 13, 2023, and Saturday, January 14, 2023, from 10 a.m. EST to 5 p.m. EST each day.

Michael McDowell and Todd Gilliland Return to Front Row Motorsports in 2023

Ryan Bergenty Named Crew Chief to No. 38 Ford Mustang

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (December 15, 2022) – Front Row Motorsports (FRM) will continue to be led by a mix of senior leadership and youthful star power in 2023 in the NASCAR Cup Series. After a career-best season, Michael McDowell will once again pilot the No. 34 Ford Mustang. Returning for his sophomore season is third-generation driver, Todd Gilliland, who will race the No. 38 Ford Mustang led by new crew chief Ryan Bergenty.

Bergenty, 39, came to FRM at the beginning of the 2021 season as the car chief of the No. 34 team with McDowell. Prior to FRM, the Plainville, Connecticut native won numerous races with Furniture Row Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing. Bergenty started his career as a mechanic and crew chief in the modified divisions in New England.

Gilliland will head into the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season after a year of Cup experience under his belt. Completing a rookie campaign where he grabbed his first top-five and two top-10 finishes, Gilliland will come to the track with new crew chief, Bergenty, ready to build a better program.

“Although the number will be the same on our No. 38 Ford Mustang, we have major changes heading into 2023,” said Gilliland. “I know that Ryan will help elevate our program and give us a fresh start. Having a full season in the Cup Series under my belt, I feel that I’m better prepared, too. I’m ready to go.”

In 2022, McDowell backed up his Daytona 500 winning season with his best statistical season with 12 top-10 and two top-five finishes. He is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel in 2023 with new crew chief Travis Peterson and continuing his success at FRM.

“I’ve been really fortunate to find a home at Front Row Motorsports and to race for Bob Jenkins,” said McDowell. “We’ve accomplished so much together, and I feel strongly that we’re just going to continue to improve. We have work ahead of us, but Travis and this team are more than capable of having another great season. I’m grateful for all the partners who support this team and we’re going to fight hard to get back into the Playoffs in 2023.”

FRM recently announced a series of organizational changes, including Seth Barbour being named Technical Director. The moves are aimed to improve the on-track performance for McDowell and Gilliland.

“Michael and Todd are an intricate part of continuing our NASCAR Cup Series success in 2023,” said Jerry Freeze, General Manager. “Michael and the No. 34 team are coming off a record year, and we believe with Travis Peterson, they will only build on that success and have an even better season.”

“Todd showed us growth in his rookie campaign,” continued Freeze. “The addition of Ryan as the crew chief, and the promotion of Seth, we believe we’re making changes to give Todd what he needs to improve.”

As previously announced, Zane Smith will return to the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series with select NASCAR Cup Series starts. Chris Lawson will continue to lead the championship team.

Partners for all programs and drivers will be announced early in 2023.

(Ontario, CA, December 13, 2022) The Ontario, California-based USAC/CRA Flowdynamics sprint car racing team has wrapped up its 2022 racing season. When all was said and done, drivers Logan Williams and Matt McCarthy had both finished in the top ten of the series championship points standings.

The team had perfect attendance in 2022 showing up at all 21 series races. Each of the team drivers qualified for 16 of the main events and all told, there was a Flowdynamics car in 19 of the 21 mains. Third-generation driver Williams had eight top 10 finishes during the season and three times he placed in the top five. His best outings were a pair of fourth-place finishes. The first of those came at the Bakersfield Speedway on May 14th. That was followed by another fourth on August 6th at the grand reopening of the Santa Maria Raceway. McCarthy, who makes his home in Riverside, California, placed in the top ten four different times. His best main event finish came at Perris Auto Speedway on March 26th when he came home seventh.

Williams, who calls Yorba Linda, California home, ended up ninth in the championship point standings. McCarthy, The father of two young children was one spot behind in 10th. Over the course of the year, each of the drivers won two heat races.

The team’s brightest moment came in August when Perris Auto Speedway hosted the annual California Racers Hall of Fame Night. A large crowd turned out to see the race which featured thousands of extra dollars added to the purse. The increased dough saw every team go the extra mile to be competitive on that very special evening. McCarthy fired the first salvo on the night when he captured the Woodlands Auto Display/Billy Wilkerson Fast Time Award for the first time in his career. If that was not enough, the 2017 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year backed it up by scoring the win in the special four-segment Junior Kurtz /Bill Simpson Trophy Dash. He did so by passing and beating three of the best drivers west of the Mississippi.

McCarthy and his teammate Williams, the 2013 Perris Auto Speedway Young Guns Champion and 2014 USAC/CRA Rookie of the Year, do not have a long time to rest. The 2023 campaign will kick off at the “Diamond In The Desert,” Arizona’s Cocopah Speedway, on January 27th and 28th. At the same event in 2022, it was Williams’ time to shine as he recorded a six-place and two seventh-place finishes at the popular “Copper State” speed plant.

Even though the 2022 season ended in early November and the first races of 2023 are still six weeks away, the action at the Flowdynamics race shop is nonstop. Cars are being prepped for another run for racing glory next year. In addition to equipment prep, the team is talking with potential marketing partners for the upcoming season. If you or your business would like to join one of the most organized and quickest teams in the west, contact John McCarthy at the following 909 930-5522 or mailto:john@flodyinc.com

Cadillac Racing: Laura Wontrop Klauser Zoom transcript

DETROIT (Dec. 14, 2022) — GM sports car racing program manager Laura Wontrop Klauser participated in a Zoom media conference hosted by IMSA with the three other manufacturer LMDh project leads.

After nearly two years of preparation, including five months of on-track development encompassing more than 20,000 kilometers, the Cadillac V-LMDh will make its competition debut Jan. 28-29 in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. Three Cadillac V-LMDh race cars will attempt to secure the pole Jan. 22 for the 61st edition of the race.

Transcript of Laura Wontrop Klauser Q&A:

YOU’VE BROUGHT THE CHIP GANASSI RACING AND ACTION EXPRESS RACING TEAMS UNDER ONE UMBRELLA AS CADILLAC RACING. CAN YOU TALK ABOUT HOW THAT PROCESS HAS GONE?

“This program in general has really rallied all of us to work together – even across the OEs. We had such compressed timelines. We have a brand-new hybrid spec system in the car. The chassis are all new for all of us, so we had to pull resources together to get to the point where we had running cars at Daytona last week and as we prepare for the Rolex. So, it’s the same approach for the teams. If we try to be off on different islands, we would be unable to compete once we got to the Rolex. We had to work together. We had to swap parts back and forth to make sure cars were running. We had to share learnings and, I think, necessity can be the best tool that you can have in your toolbox because there really was no other option to get this program done than to collaborate. That has driven the message, and what I think has been great is seeing the results of the collaboration, seeing the ability to get the test program more done by having the two teams helping us and running two cars instead of running one car. The benefits are coming in. We still have a huge mountain to climb and constantly pushing that rock up the hill. Thankfully, we’re all rallying behind the rock together – depending on which rock we’re pushing that day. So, it’s nice to have people standing next to your right and left while you’re trying to do something incredible.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PRINCIPAL CHALLENGE IS AHEAD OF THE ROLEX 24?

“Parts management has been a struggle; to get enough parts and to make sure that the quality is what we need. Especially with fielding three cars, we want to make sure we have everything for primaries, we have spares and then, God forbid something happens in the Roar, we have backups for backups. Some of it we’re probably going to get just before and some we might not have backups for backups. Really, just having enough parts to field the cars successfully and working with the supply chain. Of course, Christmas makes things a little tricky, too. Trying to get things this time of year is a challenge, but we have a full team on it and working through it.”

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY UNIQUE CHALLENGES OR SURPRISES TO GET EVERYTHING TO WORK SEAMLESSLY?

“The sheer amount of code and software that has been written to run this car is daunting. We cannot have enough software engineers working right now because everything on the car is connected. Things that we never had to worry about influencing each other in the past with the DPi or other race programs, now if one thing is slightly off it’s not going to run or turn or brake or whatever it needs to do. The importance of making sure that all the calibrations are correct and then the safety critical component of that to make sure that everything is correct is huge. Working through all of that has probably been the biggest mountain once we had all the parts on the car to test. This whole program has been a challenge.”

HOW DID YOU GET TO THIS POINT WITH YOUR ENGINE PACKAGE?

“Like everyone, we did not have much time to make a decision and move on for with what we wanted to do with this car. A lot of it is leaning on the experience that we’ve had for decades racing at GM – both Chevrolet and Cadillac – especially with the DPi and the eight cylinder. As quickly as we could, we did some engine packaging studies for multiple engines, and after we reviewed what we were trying to do, the criteria and the performance requirements for this platform, for us and our experience it made sense to carry forward with the V8 architecture. This is a new engine for this car, but leaning heavily on experience and architecture of V8 engines that we have across the portfolio. No regrets, especially as we look to our trip overseas to run in the WEC. I think we’re bringing America pretty loud and strong with our Cadillac and we’re proud of that.”

HOW DO YOU SEE THE EQUIVALENCE BETWEEN THE HYPERCAR AND THE LMHD CAR FOR THE WEC?

“In terms of the two platforms racing against each other, there’s been so much work that has gone into that, countless technical working groups meetings, discussions, lots of decisions that were made to try to bring parity between the two platforms. The effort has been put forward to make it happen correctly. Did we miss something? Maybe. There’s always that one thing that once you worry about all the bigger things then the little things become big things. I really applaud the effort from the two sanctioning bodies as well as the manufacturers. This is definitely a team sport to figure out how to get all these cars together so they can race in parity.”

HAS IT BEEN MORE OF A CHALLENGE FOR YOUR BRAND THAN YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE GOING IN?

“I still have a lot of growing and experiences ahead in my career. I can’t wait to compare whatever the next challenge is to this one, because this one has been incredible. And it’s been incredible what we’ve done in a short period of time with all of the economic factors in the world that have influenced how everyone is running their businesses these days. Labor shortages, supply chain. They are real and they impact us every day. We have brought on some incredible young people to our program that are just blowing us away with what they are able to do. If you say, ‘Hey, we have this problem to solve. Figure it out,’ and then give them the freedom and the ability to do what they think is right, it’s been awesome. It really is the future. It’s seeing how we can mesh people with 20-plus years of experience in racing with new people who have more experience in this new software and everything we’re bringing onboard. You can see the mature and the up and coming working together and how they are learning from each other. It’s given us a great opportunity to just grow what our motorsports family is in terms of everyone who is working one the cars and the types of people being part of this.”

Wright Motorsports Assembles Impressive Lineup to Defend Rolex 24 Victory in No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche

BATAVIA, Ohio. (December 14, 2022) – The highly-anticipated 61st Rolex 24 At Daytona will kick off the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship next month, and Wright Motorsports has assembled another impressive lineup to defend last year’s unforgettable victory. Ryan Hardwick, Jan Heylen, and Zacharie Robichon all return to the Wright Motorsports No. 16 1st Phorm Porsche 911 GT3 R (type 992) in defense of the win and will be joined by veteran Wright driver Dennis Olsen.

The full-season entry will begin the year with the longest race on the 2023 IMSA WeatherTech calendar and the first of four endurance races. As Olsen returns to the team for January’s Rolex 24 only, the fight for the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup title will be in the hands of Hardwick, Heylen, and Robichon for the three other endurance races of the 2023 season. Announcements for the seven IMSA WeatherTech Sprint races will follow at a later date.

The trio, then joined by Porsche factory driver Richard Lietz, were a critical part to the team’s Rolex 24 victory last year, leading 258 of 761 laps. The impressive performance set the tone for another championship-contending season where the team ultimately finished second in the GTD class.

Olsen last raced with Wright Motorsports in 2019, where he earned four podium finishes in what is now the SRO Fanatec GT World Challenge America championship. He also participated in the team’s Indianapolis 8 Hour effort that season, racing alongside Dirk Werner and Matt Campbell. More recently, driving another team’s Porsche 911 GT3 R, the Norwegian racer stood third on the Daytona podium while watching Wright celebrate it’s Rolex 24 At Daytona win last season.

New to 2023 for Wright Motorsports is a technical partnership with Motul. The two brands will work together to develop further products such as iconic 300V engine oil, RBF 700 brake fluids, gear oils, and other performance lubricants/chemicals. In addition to Wright Motorsports utilizing Motul lubricants on the No. 16 Porsche, the French lubricant’s company has also formed a partnership with Ryan Hardwick’s Mountain Motorsports, one of the largest retailers of motorcycle and powersports vehicles in the nation. Motul has been a strong supporter of other privateer Porsche programs having supported championship-winning 911 GT3 Rs for the last two years.

Sabelt, offering tailor-made design and manufacturing solutions for racers, has also joined Wright Motorsports for the new race season. With premium racing gear and custom-designed equipment, the Italian company manufactures original car seats, seat belts, and motorsport products, in addition to seatbelts for military, aviation, and aerospace applications.

All teams will have five on-track sessions to shake down their cars before qualifying on the final day. The following week will be filled with official practice sessions in anticipation of the start of the Rolex 24 At Daytona on Saturday, January 28 at 1:40 PM ET. DRIVER QUOTES

Ryan Hardwick

I am excited to be returning with Wright Motorsports and Porsche in the brand-new type 992 GT3 R! This team has become like family to me, and I truly enjoy competing alongside them. We also have our winning driver lineup back together again, with both Jan Heylen and Zach Robichon joining me in the No. 16 car for the IMSA Endurance Championship. I’m really looking forward to returning to Daytona next month, with the goal of defending our Rolex 24 victory from last season.

Jan Heylen

I’m really looking forward to going back to Daytona with Ryan and Zach! We have a good track record as a driver pairing and we have the best team to support us. The goal is obviously to try and win the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup, and I know we’ll have all the tools to be in contention for the title. Consistency is key and Ryan and Wright Motorsports made sure we have exactly that.On top of all this, we’ll be starting the 2023 season with a brand-new Porsche. There’s a lot to be excited about and I can’t wait to get started.

Zacherie Robichon

I’m excited to be back with Wright Motorsports and of course to once again be sharing the car with Ryan and Jan. We had a little bit of everything last year but obviously our highlight was the victory at the Rolex 24 At Daytona. This year we’re looking forward to rolling out with the all-new 992 generation Porsche 911 GT3 R and we hope we can continue our success. We have our work cut out for us, but I am looking forward to supporting the guys once again in our push to win the Michelin Endurance Cup.

Dennis Olsen

I’m very happy to be a part of Wright Motorsport for the Rolex 24 At Daytona. I know the team very well from a few years ago, and they have developed a lot since then and are definitely one of the top teams! I think we got a strong line up in GTD with Ryan, Jan and Zach. There is a new factor for everyone in the team which is the latest generation Porsche 911 GT3 R – but I have great trust in Porsche’s development of the car, and we have a strong package. I can’t wait to get started with Daytona Roar.
