Taylor Gray, No. 71 Ford Mustang

  • Following a breakout year in the ARCA Menards and ARCA East seasons, Taylor Gray will conclude his portion of the ARCA West schedule Friday afternoon.
  • Gray is coming off a dominant ARCA West performance at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where he earned the pole and led 157 laps en route to his second ARCA West win in as many chances in 2022.
  • The 17-year-old pilot now holds five wins in ARCA West competition, having scored a win in every season he has been old enough to compete.
  • With Gray’s usual number being claimed on the West circuit already, he will utilize the No. 71 for the final event of the 2022 season before transitioning to the NASCAR Truck Series full-time in 2023.

Andrés Pérez de Lara, No. 51 Empereon Constar Latam Mustang

  • Andrés Pérez de Lara will make his final start in the No. 51 at Phoenix Raceway for David Gilliland Racing in 2022.
  • The Mexico City native has enjoyed a smooth transition to ARCA competition, finishing seventh in his debut at Bristol Motor Speedway while claiming a runner-up finish at the Las Vegas Bullring two weeks ago.
  • Pérez de Lara is a part of the 2022 NASCAR Drive for Diversity Class and will participate at the Drive for Diversity Combine in 2023.
  • Crew Chief Derek Smith will call the shots for the Empereon Constar Mustang. Smith, a former winner at Phoenix Raceway with driver David Gilliland in 2020, is a veteran of the ARCA Menards Series — collecting over 30 races to his credit between all three ARCA divisions.

ADVANCE NOTES

Weekend Format

Traditional practice – a full, 50-minute session – is on the schedule for Friday, with single-car qualifying set for Saturday in Phoenix.

Keselowski at Phoenix

  • Keselowski makes his 27th start at Phoenix this Sunday, where he has 13 top-10s all-time with an average finish of 12.9. Despite no wins at the 1-mile track, Keselowski has four top-10s in his last six starts including a runner-up result in the 2020 season finale, one of his two P2 finishes there (2018, fall).
  • He’s led 283 laps at Phoenix in 14 different races and is coming off a 10th-place run last fall. In the 2021 spring event he finished fourth after starting from the pole. He finished 23rd there this spring.
  • Keselowski is a two-time Xfinity Series winner in Phoenix, earning the victory in 2018 in the No. 22 entry, and in 2014 for Team Penske. Overall he has 21 NXS starts there with 15 top-10s. He also made two Truck starts there in 2005 and 2008 with a best finish of sixth in his own No. 19 truck for BKR.

Matt McCall at Phoenix

  • McCall will call his 16th Cup race from Phoenix on Sunday where he has five top-10s and a best finish of second, which came in his very first start with Jamie McMurray back in 2015.
  • He carries a 12.5 average finish and finished 16th in the 2021 season finale. He and Kurt Busch most recently teamed up for two top-10 efforts (seventh – 2019, sixth – 2020) and his drivers have completed all but four laps there all-time.

QUOTE WORTHY
Keselowski on racing at Phoenix:
“We’ve got one more chance to steal a win with this 6 team this season, and the last couple of weeks I think have been an indicator as to how strong we’ve been as of late. Phoenix wasn’t our best of races in the spring, but returning to tracks for a second time has been huge for us in continuing to build our organization. It’s a long season to get to this point, and we’re ready for the challenge out West.”

Last Time Out
Keselowski drove to his best finish (fourth) of the season Sunday at Martinsville Speedway, putting his Kohler Ford in position late to steal a win. He was later stripped of the finish after NASCAR deemed the No. 6 did not meet minimum weight requirements in post-race technical inspection.

For the season finale, Gilliland will debut a vibrant Boot Barn car design reflective of the desert valley setting in Phoenix.

“I am thankful to have Boot Barn back on the No. 38 Mustang this weekend,” continued Gilliland. “They are a great partner to work with and our fans really enjoy the engagement with Boot Barn on and off the track. I really hope we can close out the year strong on Sunday with them on board.”

AmericanTrucks’ Make-A-Wish Makeover

2004 Silverado 1500 Street Truck Build

PAOLI, Pa. (October 31st, 2022) – Parts authority, AmericanTrucks (AT) partners with Make-A-Wish® (MAW) to overhaul a 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500 owned by Darrin from Texas. AT highlights the transformation in its latest YouTube video, showing all the parts used to grant this special wish. AT’s parent company, Turn5 works with various organizations with the goal of extending a helping hand to the community. This is its 9th MAW build-to-date.

“The amount of detail that went into every square inch of Darrin’s Silverado is honestly incredible…. That truck has a lot of history with Darrin’s family and knowing that we gave it new life means the world to us.” – AT host, Justin Dugan.

With Darrin’s wish list and a few ideas of their own, AT kickstarted the project with a new paint job courtesy of AkzoNobel. From there, the team got to work transforming the tired Chevy into a clean street truck worthy of its recipient. Key upgrades include a Belltech Lowering Kit with Street Performance Shocks, Invictus Chrome Wheels, Cooper Discoverer Tires, a World Wide Stereo, Magnaflow Street Series Exhaust, and a BAKFlip Tonneau Cover. The video walks viewers through each step of the process up to the big reveal at Turn5’s headquarters in Paoli, PA. Viewers will enjoy witnessing Darrin’s reaction and finding out which upgrades he liked the most.

AT’s MAW video reveal is as informative as it is inspiring. Along with AkzoNobel’s incredible paint job, over 19 parts were used to make Darrin’s wish come true. Arrow McLaren SP inks Kanaan, NTT Data for 2023 IndyCar season

Photo by Chris Owens (Penske Entertainment).

In a major off-season blockbuster move for McLaren Racing, NTT Data will be joining forces with Arrow McLaren SP on a multiyear basis that will include serving as a key primary sponsor for Felix Rosenqvist for the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series season. The team was also proud to reveal that the 2013 Indianapolis 500 champion Tony Kanaan will be piloting a fourth AMSP entry sponsored by NTT Data for the 107th running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that will occur on May 28, 2023.

The move comes after months of speculation towards AMSP’s fourth competitor choice for the 2023 Indy 500 and as the team prepares to field three full-time entries for the upcoming IndyCar season for its drivers Rosenqvist, Pato O’Ward and Alexander Rossi, who announced his move to the team in June following a seven-year run with Andretti Autosport.

As part of the multiyear deal, NTT Data will serve as the Official IT Services Partner for AMSP’s operations while serving as an associate sponsor for O’Ward and Rossi. The global technology and business solutions provider was previously the Official IT Services Partner for Chip Ganassi Racing and was a key partner for the organization since 2013. It has also been serving as a title sponsor for the IndyCar Series since 2019.

“NTT DATA joining our great group of partners is a huge boost for Arrow McLaren SP,” Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, said. “I’m thrilled they will be representing our No. 6 car as a Lead Partner and a major sponsor for our fourth entry in the Indy 500, piloted by Tony Kanaan. Tony proved last year he can compete with the best of them, and I’m excited to see him put on a show with our team next May.”

“We welcome the opportunity to partner with McLaren, a long-term and valued client, and to demonstrate how sponsorships simultaneously build awareness and enhance business-to-business relationships,” Bob Pryor, CEO of NTT Data Services, added. “NTT DATA is also proud of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES’ growth with a strong international stable of drivers, great leadership from Penske Entertainment, and a passionate fan base attracted to the highly competitive product – where any driver can win in any weekend.”

For Kanaan, the 2023 Indy 500 is set to mark his 22nd consecutive appearance competing in one of the most prestigious motorsport events across the world and his first competing under the McLaren banner. He spent the previous two seasons as a part-time competitor for Chip Ganassi Racing, where he finished 10th during the 2021 Indy 500 before notching a strong third-place effort during this past season’s event. He claimed his first and lone Indy 500 victory to date in 2013, which occurred after 12 previous attempts.

Through a total of 388 career starts in IndyCar competition, Kanaan has achieved one championship (2004), 17 victories, 13 poles, 79 podiums and 4,077 laps led.

“I feel extremely lucky to get another shot racing in the Indianapolis 500,” Kanaan said. “I’m excited to work with Pato, Felix and Alexander and race with the Arrow McLaren SP team. My biggest battle in last year’s race was against these three drivers so working with them and driving with them will be exciting for all of us.”

In addition to Kanaan’s Indy 500 entry, NTT Data will be sponsoring Rosenqvist’s No. 6 Dallara-Chevrolet for 10 IndyCar events in 2023, which will commence at the Streets of St. Petersburg for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 5 and conclude at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey on September 10. The new partnership deal with AMSP reunites NTT Data with Rosenqvist, who was previously sponsored by the IT solutions provider when he competed for Chip Ganassi Racing in 2019 and 2020. It also comes nearly two months after Rosenqvist was announced to remain with the organization for the upcoming season.

The 30-year-old Rosenqvist from Värnamo, Sweden, is coming off a strong 2022 season with AMSP, where he achieved a single podium result at the Exhibition Place in Toronto, Canada, in July along with nine additional top-10 results throughout the 17-race schedule before finishing in eighth place in the final driver’s standings, one spot behind teammate O’Ward.

“I look forward to representing NTT DATA once again,” Rosenqvist said. “They’re a great partner and are committed to the series. I welcome them to the McLaren Racing family and am ready to start the season off in St. Petersburg, racing the No. 6 NTT DATA Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet. It will also be great to race alongside Tony and learn from him as we prepare for the Indy 500.”

The new partnership between NTT Data and Arrow McLaren SP is set to commence at the Streets of St. Petersburg for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 5, which will also commence the 2023 NTT IndyCar Series season. The event’s coverage is scheduled to occur at noon ET on NBC.

Busch Light Racing: Kevin Harvick Phoenix Season Finale Advance

KEVIN HARVICK
Phoenix Season Finale Advance
No. 4 Busch Light Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

Event Overview

● Event: NASCAR Cup Series Season Finale (Round 36 of 36)
● Time/Date: 3 p.m. EST on Sunday, Nov. 6
● Location: Phoenix Raceway
● Layout: 1-mile oval
● Laps/Miles: 312 laps/312 miles (502 kilometers)
● Stage Lengths: Stage 1: 60 laps / Stage 2: 125 laps / Final Stage: 127 laps
● TV/Radio: NBC / MRN / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● In the 312 laps that will eventually lead to the checkered flag in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Phoenix Raceway, there will be a handful of leaders jousting to lead the most important lap – the last one around the 1-mile oval. Busch Light is highlighting this race within the race with its #BuschLineLeader Twitter promotion. Any time there’s a lead change, fans have the opportunity to win $100 by simply following @BuschBeer, turning on notifications, and then tweeting #BuschLineLeader and #Sweepstakes. Whether it’s Kevin Harvick driving his No. 4 Busch Light Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) to the lead, or a different driver taking over the top spot, Busch Light will award those fast enough to tweet #BuschLineLeader and #Sweepstakes with $100 until its $7,000 budget has been emptied. So with a cold Busch Light in one hand and the TV remote in another, tune into NBC at 3 p.m. EST to catch the final 312 laps of the 2022 season and earn some cold, hard cash.

● Who owns Phoenix Raceway? NASCAR or Harvick? NASCAR owns the facility, at least on paper, but Harvick owns the track. The 2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion has won a record nine Cup Series races at the desert mile. No other active Cup Series driver has won more than three races at Phoenix. Former Cup Series driver Jimmie Johnson is the closest to Harvick with four wins at the track.

● Harvick hasn’t finished outside the top-10 in his last 18 NASCAR Cup Series starts at Phoenix. The last time he finished outside the top-10 was March 3, 2013 when he finished 13th. That was nearly 10 years ago when the San Francisco Giants were the reigning World Series champions, the Baltimore Ravens were just a month removed from winning Super Bowl XLVII, the Lebron James-led Miami Heat were marching toward their second straight NBA championship, and the Chicago Blackhawks were on their way to hoisting the Stanley Cup. Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, still wasn’t old enough to enjoy a Busch Light, and Austin Cindric, winner of this year’s Daytona 500, was in eighth grade.

● Of Harvick’s nine NASCAR Cup Series victories at Phoenix, he won four straight between November 2013 and March 2015. The streak ended when Harvick finished second at Phoenix in November 2015, but when the series returned to the track in March 2016, Harvick won again. Harvick is the only driver to win four Cup Series races in a row at Phoenix. Johnson was next best with three straight wins between November 2007 and November 2008. Only five drivers have won consecutive Cup Series races at Phoenix, but Harvick is the only driver to win consecutive races twice, as he also swept both races in 2006.

● In 39 career NASCAR Cup Series starts at Phoenix, Harvick has earned an average finish of 8.7, the best of any active Cup Series driver. Denny Hamlin is next best with an average finish of 10.6 over 34 Cup Series starts.

● Harvick’s best average finish at Phoenix comes from running up front at Phoenix. He has led 1,663 laps in his 39 career NASCAR Cup Series starts at the track, dwarfing that of any other driver. Next best in this category is Kyle Busch with 1,190 laps led, 473 fewer laps than Harvick. That deficit represents more than a full race and-a-half distance at Phoenix as Sunday’s race is 312 laps.

● To finish first, one must first finish. Proving this mantra is Harvick’s lap completion rate of 99.8 percent at Phoenix. In fact, of the 12,175 laps available to Harvick at Phoenix, he has only missed 21 of those laps. Harvick’s first career NASCAR Cup Series start at Phoenix came on Oct. 28, 2001 when he started 37th and finished 17th.

● With the Estrella Mountains as its backdrop, Phoenix is a picture-perfect racetrack. Harvick has also been perfect at the desert oval. He has scored a perfect driver rating (150.0) at Phoenix on three occasions – November 2006 when he started second, led 252 of 312 laps, and won; November 2014 when he started third, led 264 of 312 laps, and won; and March 2015, when he started first, led 224 of 312 laps, and won.

● Harvick has also proven successful at Phoenix outside of the NASCAR Cup Series. He owns a NASCAR Xfinity Series win (April 2006) and four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victories (November 2002, October 2003, November 2008 and November 2009).

● Harvick has two NASCAR K&N Pro Series West starts at Phoenix. His best effort came in his first K&N start at the track when he won the pole for the 1998 Phoenix 150 and led twice for a race-high 74 laps before finishing second to Rich Woodland Jr., by just .016 of a second.

● Before Cup and Xfinity and Trucks and K&N, Harvick competed at Phoenix while on the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour. He made six starts between 1994 and 1999, with his last start being his best. Harvick qualified fourth and finished fourth as part of the 1999 Copper World Classic. Finishing just behind Harvick in fifth was an up-and-coming racer named Kurt Busch. Today, Harvick and Busch lead the NASCAR Cup Series in starts at Phoenix with 39 starts apiece.

Kevin Harvick, Driver of the No. 4 Busch Light Ford Mustang

A NASCAR Cup Series champion will be crowned Sunday at Phoenix. As a former Cup Series champion, what do you think winning a championship says about you?

“I think it says a lot about our team. For me, leaving RCR (Richard Childress Racing) and coming to SHR was a huge risk, and breaking out of my comfort zone and being open-minded to new people and new cars and new things is something I’ve always looked back on and said, ‘That’s why that change was good.’ Don’t ever give up on the evolution and the change of what you need to do to progress with the sport because our sport has an incredible progression rate, as far as how the car progresses, how the rules progress, how the tires progress, how the team progresses, how your driving style progresses – it’s kind of evolve or die, and I think that’s important to remember.”

What makes a championship memorable beyond just winning a title?

“I would tell you desire and grit, and that ability to not let the outside world affect what you do, and how you do things and why you do things, and believing in the process and the things that you do. Believe in the people around you, but don’t be afraid to change things along the way. For me, the biggest thing is just learning how to do that as an adult. But professionally, which is something that I didn’t do great at RCR, I think as Rodney (Childers, crew chief) came into the picture and we were able to evolve with the team, and each of us was able to evolve as a person, really helped the communication and the things that happen with the team, to be able to keep that cohesiveness of the group, to be able to be productive and work forward through good times and bad. Sometimes, the good times were harder to progress through than the bad times. In the bad times, you know you have to get better. In the good times, you can be a little bit slow to react. You have to balance these things. That’s why you always hear me talk about balance, because it’s not really just about good times and bad times, it’s also about the circle of life and your team and everything that goes with that to get the maximum potential out of the mental thought process and things that come with being good and being a communicator. I’m not the fastest driver in the world, but I feel like I can out-think a lot of situations and help my team think forward to figure things out. That’s part of what we do well.”

How difficult is it to defend a championship?

“Our first thought was, how do we defend this championship and not look like it was a fluke? We were a first-year team, won the championship the first year, and then at the end of the year we didn’t win the championship, but we had a way better year than we had in 2014. We just came up short from winning the championship. The only conversation we had as a group was how do we do better than we did in 2014 to show them that we are for real.”

A championship wasn’t in the cards this year, so what are you looking ahead to in order to prepare for 2023?

“You want to have all the cars as competitive as possible, and you do the things that it takes to do that. So, the better we can make all the cars, the better off everybody is going to be. That’s the goal.”

Chase Briscoe was SHR’s last man standing in the NASCAR Playoffs and he nearly raced his way into the Championship 4. He’s finishing his second season in Cup, and it’s one that delivered success early as he won at Phoenix when the series first raced at the track back in March. How is it working with Briscoe?

“Chase and I have developed a good relationship. I like hearing his feedback because of the fact that he has such a different, fresh approach to what he’s feeling, seeing, ideas, how he drives. It keeps it good for me too, because of the fact that he looks at it so differently than I look at it. Being able to have that conversation go both ways is important for the progression of the organization. Him finding a balance of what I do and me finding a balance of what he does, because they’re two different outlooks of what you’re feeling and seeing, that’s healthy.”

What are some of the things you and Briscoe talk about?

“We’ve had more time to spend on the plane and go to the tests and just be around each other more, other than just showing up at the racetrack, which is what we did the first year. During COVID, you just showed up at the racetrack and weren’t around each other much because you weren’t allowed to go to the meetings and things at the race shop, anyway. Obviously, that’s different now, and we’re back to a more normal routine. That’s good, because one of the hardest things to learn in what we do is how to deal with not only just becoming a Cup driver, but in his particular case, how to deal with success. Then you have a family and you have finances and you have commitments and all of those things that you have to balance. And Chase is a very simple person. His life revolves around his family and racing, and I think when you start to complicate that and your life becomes less simple, you have to figure out how to deal with life and still maintain that ability to have that approach of, ‘I’ll do whatever it takes to put myself in a position to be a driver, to be a winner.’ That’s hard, and sometimes you let your guard down. You see a lot of these younger guys let their guard down after they win their first race, or when they get to the Cup level, and they can’t ever figure out how to get that same hunger in their belly to get to that second win and that third win and that fourth win and be that consistent, up-front guy. That’s the difficult part and, after he won, what I tried to stress to him was, ‘Hey, don’t ever lose that fire in your belly of thinking that you’re not going to make it, that you might not have a job tomorrow, because that’s what will drive you to be great.’ He has that ability because he’s been on the other side of the fence where he’s been sleeping on couches and wondering what he’s going to do tomorrow. I’ve been there, a lot of us have been there, and you don’t want to go back to that. You want to keep the success that you have, and I think not having had that before, that’s what sets Chase apart from a lot of the guys he’s racing against.”

You talk about making the time to commit to racing. Does that include working on the car?

“Well, I haven’t worked on a car in 25 years. Working on a car is almost viewed as you’re in the way, now. That being said, I think young drivers should work on their cars a little bit, but I also think there’s a point where it becomes more about the computer and the iPad and the data and the information to understand what their job is from a driving standpoint and, more importantly, to be able to communicate with the engineers, and understand the graphs and the information that’s coming with it. The information that you give, it isn’t a guess anymore. If you’re not doing a good job, like if the car’s tight or loose in the simulator, they can tell that it’s tight or loose, and then if it’s something that they don’t expect, they can diagnose whether it’s aero or mechanical. So when you start feeding those directions, it’s more important to able to analyze the things that are going on because it’s a different era.”

That “fire in the belly” you mentioned, is that how you got the nickname, “The Closer”? Do you remember who gave you that nickname and when and where it started?

“It had to be Mike Joy and Darrell Waltrip, I would assume. Darrell probably had three or four different nicknames for me throughout the years. I guess that’s just the one that stuck. I think as we went through the years at RCR, it’s kind of like where were there at the end of August, where it’s like, ‘Man, how in the world did these guys even get into contention to race for a win this week and now they’re walking out with the trophy.’ That’s kind of been the M.O. of everything that we’ve done throughout the year. There’s just no quit. It’s never over until it’s over, and there’s never a race where I’ve gotten into the car and I haven’t said, ‘OK, we have a chance today. We might be slow, we might be fast, we might have something go wrong, but in the end, we’ve just got to figure it out.’ And I think that mentality has carried over to all the guys on our Busch Light team.”

Ford Performance NASCAR: Logano and Smith Running for Championships This Weekend

Chandler Smith – No. 18 Safelite Tundra TRD Pro Camping World Trucks Championship 4 at Phoenix Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 Safelite® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: Lucas Oil 150, Race 23 of 23 (Championship 4)
150 Laps – 45/45/60; 150 Miles
Location: Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway (one-mile oval)
Date/Broadcast: Nov. 4, 2022, at 10 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Chandler Championship Chatter:

Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Safelite team head to the Championship 4 at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway looking to bring home the eighth overall championship and third driver title to KBM. The 20-year-old driver advanced to the Championship 4 by finishing the Round of 8 third on the playoff grid, 13 points above the cutoff line.

Smith is the defending winner of the Phoenix truck race. After narrowly missing out on a bid to compete for last year’s championship, the Georgia driver stole the show in the championship race. He captured the pole and all three stages en route to the second win of his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series career. Across three Truck Series starts at the Arizona track, he has compiled an average finish of 2.3, with his win last year and a pair of third-place finishes (2019 and 2020). He also went to victory lane in his lone ARCA Menards Series start at the one-mile oval in 2020.

The Toyota Racing Development product has produced three wins in 2022, tying him with Zane Smith for the series lead. He won the second race of the season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the regular season finale at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway and in the Round of 8 at Richmond. Across 22 Truck Series starts this season Smith has recorded eight top-five and 15 top-10 finishes. He ranks first among Truck Series regulars in laps led (440), average running position (8.784) and laps completed (3032), is second in average finish (9.0), third in driver rating (101.8) and quality passes (715), and fourth in fastest laps run (205).

The No. 18 Safelite team will be unloading the same Tundra TRD Pro that Smith won with at Phoenix last season, KBM-70. The chassis has totaled three victories, last year at Phoenix, earlier this year at Las Vegas and in this year’s Round of 8 at Richmond.

In addition to having a truck with a winning history, Smith will have Danny Stockman calling the shots for him, a crew chief with championship pedigree. The veteran crew chief captured a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and also won an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s drivers have produced one win, two top-five and three top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.3 across three Truck Series starts at Phoenix. In the series most recent visit he picked up the win with Smith last year. Across 12 Xfinity Series starts at the one-mile track his drivers have registered four top-five and 11 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 6.3. Stockman has captured nine wins as a crew chief since joining KBM, including five with Smith.

Smith earned NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 after producing two victories, one pole, 213 laps led, six top-five and nine top-10 finishes in his first full-time season. He earned his first career Truck Series victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in September of 2021. Across 60 career Truck Series starts, the Toyota Racing Development driver had recorded five wins, one pole, 746 laps led, 22 top-five and 33 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.8.

Safelite, the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement and recalibration services, returned to KBM for a fifth season in 2022 and will be the primary sponsor on Smith’s Tundra TRD Pro Tundra for Friday night’s championship race.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:
You finished last season strong. How do that help propel you to the Championship 4 this year?
“I feel like last year, the last three quarters of last year we showed what we were going to have in store for this year. We were really good at the end of last year – started getting wins and running up front every single week and were the truck to beat almost every other week – where the year before we were hit or miss. We ended up getting our stuff together, we were more consistent, winning races and I told the guys next year we are out for blood – we’re going to go get them next year. And look, we’re sitting here talking about running for a championship and it has just been an amazing experience.”

Does your performance at Phoenix last year give you confidence heading into Friday night?
“It gives us a lot of data; we know what works and doesn’t work at Phoenix. Looking back at last year, we were really good, got the pole and won both the stages and the race. And if you look to the year before, we ran at the back but salvaged a good finish. We’ve been on both sides of the totem pole – we were absolutely horrible and then we went and stomped their butts. We have a lot of notes, I think obviously it would be dumb of us not to go back with what we had, and I think that is what we are going to do. We just can’t beat ourselves. We know how to win there, and we know how to qualify good there and track position is definitely big because the race is really short. Qualifying good, staying up front and staying out of trouble and racing the race track. We’ve produced fast Toyota Tundras all year, so there is no reason we stop now.”

Danny Stockman, Crew Chief Q&A:
You’ve won two NASCAR National Series championships. Does that help you prepare your team for Friday?
“It all starts throughout the season, and you work on your driver, and you work on your team to be able to perform in this moment. The moment is huge, and you don’t get these opportunities every year and you don’t get Chandler Smith’s every year and when you have these opportunities and these moments you have to excel. We’ve been preparing ourselves throughout the season to be able to do that and there is no other team in this garage that I would rather take then who I have and no other driver. I truthfully feel in my heart that win can go there and win the race and the championship at the same time.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 60 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded five wins, 746 laps led, 22 top-five and 33 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.8.
  • Earned NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 and finished eighth in the championship standings after producing two victories, one pole, 213 laps led, six top-five and nine top-10 finishes in his first full-time season. He earned his first career Truck Series victory at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in September and in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway earned his first career pole and swept all three stages en route to his second victory.
  • Has posted an average finish of 22.0 across two NASCAR Xfinity Series starts in 2022, with a best result of seventh coming in his most recent outing at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway.
  • Has collected 10 wins, 10 poles, 1894 laps led, 23 top-five and 30 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.2 across 35 career ARCA Menards Series starts.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 Safelite Tundra:
KBM-70: The No. 18 Safelite team will unload KBM-70 for Friday night’s Championship 4 race. Smith has three victories with this Tundra TRD Pro, including last year’s season finale at Phoenix. Most recently Smith dominated the opening race of the Round of 8 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway with this Tundra TRD Pro leading 176 of 250 laps. He picked up his first win of 2022 earlier this year at Las Vegs Motor Speedway with this chassis.
KBM-70 Performance Profile

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have collected six wins, six poles, 953 laps led, 15 top-five and 24 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 9.1 across 34 starts at Phoenix Raceway. The organization’s six victories at the Arizona track have come with five different drivers, with Smith’s victory in last year’s event being the most recent. Kyle Busch won in 2011, Brian Scott in 2012, Erik Jones went back-to-back in 2013 and 2014 while Daniel Suarez claimed the top spot in 2016.
  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (98) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway earlier this year, Corey Heim became the 18th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 26 career victories.

Podium Hunt Begins for Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing in Portugal This Weekend

May 1, 2022. Lamborghini Super Trofeo round 2: Laguna Seca, 25 Ashton Harrison, Tom Long, Wayne Taylor Racing WTR, Harrison Contracting, Prestige Performance Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo Evo2

Brownsburg, Ind. (November 1, 2022) — The Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR) Lamborghini Super Trofeo (LST) stable of seven drivers piloting four cars across three classes is ready for an intercontinental battle at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve near Portimão, Portugal this week. The Prestige Lamborghinis will contest the final North American races of the season, before competing in two World Final races against their European counterparts over the weekend, crowning a World Champion.

Having secured the North America Lamborghini Super Trofeo (LST) PRO Driver Championship in Virginia a month ago, the No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing car of Kyle Marcelli, Daniel Formal and the entire Wayne Taylor Racing team is now focused on overcoming an 18-point deficit to win the North American Team Championship.

With the North America rounds complete on Friday, the entire stable will then set their sights on becoming World Champions in their respective classes. If Kyle Marcelli and Danny Formal can bring home the overall crown, they will become the first World Final winners for Wayne Taylor Racing since 2017 and Formal will become the first ever LST World Champion from Costa Rica.

No. 53 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing drivers Jordan Missig and Aidan Yoder tied their season-best overall and PRO class finishes in the last round at VIR, and will look to carry that momentum into Portugal. This will be Yoder’s first entry in the international event. Teammate Missig showed class-leading pace in last year’s final, and the pair are looking to bring home their first North American PRO trophy, then stand on the World Final podium in the days following.

Ashton Harrison and Tom Long currently occupy third in the North American PRO|AM standings in the No. 25 Harrison Contracting Company with Wayne Taylor Racing LST, with an opportunity to secure second place in the championship. Harrison is coming off of a fantastic run of success in the SRO GT World Challenge Championship, having become the first woman to win a title in any series and any class under the SRO umbrella by securing the Driver and Team titles earlier this month. As the first female winner of a World Final race in 2020, and with a pair of fourth-place finishes after intense battles with European competitors last year, Harrison aims to finish 2022 strong. It will be Long’s first time racing at Portimao, and the lineup’s pro is equally enthusiastic.

Randy Sellari can achieve a top-three finish in the North American AM class points. The 2020 LB Cup Champion is keen to add a win to his total of four podiums on the year. With a best finish of fifth overall in last year’s World Finals, he’ll look to climb a couple of spots higher and secure a trophy on the international stage over the weekend.

Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Race 1 from Portimão goes green at 6:00 a.m. ET on Friday, November 4th, followed by Race 2 at 10:50 a.m. ET. World Final Race 1 for the international AM & LB Cup classes takes place at 9:45 a.m. ET on November 5th, with Race 1 for the PRO & PRO|AM grid immediately following at 11:05 a.m. ET. Race 2 for the AM & LB Cup field starts at 7:00 a.m. ET on Sunday, November 6th with Race 2 for the PRO & PRO|AM runners later that day at 9:50 a.m. ET. Watch live on Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s official YouTube channel, and follow Wayne Taylor Racing’s official channels for updates and results.

Kyle Marcelli, No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing LST (PRO)
“It’s been a fantastic season thus far in the No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing Lamborghini. We look to put an exclamation point on our North American championship with a win in the World Final. That’s without question the goal and objective. We’ve got four races total in Portimão. For us, we’re going to utilize the North America races as extra preparation. We aren’t going to push too hard or take any chances. We need to save the equipment for the World Final, but of course, the Team Championship is still to be decided so we’ll be looking for a strong result, just without taking any extra risks that would jeopardize us in the world rounds. As for the track, it’s a new venue for me. It’s been a little while since I’ve had to learn a new circuit—since the final last year in Misano. I enjoy the challenge and thankfully we have lots of test time in days leading up. It’s important that we get a track walk in early. I’ve already studied a bunch of video and data and I’m looking forward to it. The track looks incredible from the onboards. Obviously, it’s a Formula 1 circuit and it’s going to be smooth, high-grip, and make for some great racing. The last thing I want to say is a big thank you to my teammate Danny Formal. He’s been wonderful to work with all season. He’s been super fast, aggressive when needed and has just done a great job. It’s a pleasure to share the seat with him, and I also want to thank our engineers Jeff, David, Sri and the whole team. The mechanics have ensured that our car has performed flawlessly. It’s been quick and reliable and that is a result of the team’s hard work and preparation. You’d expect nothing less from a team like Wayne Taylor Racing and I’m very appreciative to have the opportunity to drive for such an iconic team. Thank you for the support we get from Prestige Performance, Konica Minolta, Harrison Contracting and JG Wentworth because it all leads to our results and performance.”

Daniel Formal, No. 1 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing LST (PRO)
“I’m thrilled to be going to Portugal for the last two rounds of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America series. We’re already Driver Champions so the pressure is off there, but Kyle and I want to tie the record of seven wins in a season. We have five already. We’ll try, but our main goal is the North America Team Championship and the World Final title after the NA races conclude. I’m super confident because the car has been phenomenal all year long. The engineers at Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing have given us a rocket ship. I’m happy to be going back to Portugal, as I’ve been there for the karting world finals in 2012 and I’m familiar with the town of Portimão. I’m super excited and motivated—ready to bring the World Championship back to Wayne Taylor Racing and be the first Costa Rican champion and win the international competition for North America to show that we’re the top Super Trofeo series in the world!”

Jordan Missig, No. 53 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing (PRO)
“With the title fight still up for grabs in the Team Championship, it’s all hands on deck to secure both the Driver and Team titles for Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor in 2022. Once the North America races conclude, our focus turns towards the World Final to try and show the European field what the American Super Trofeo Series is all about! I am excited to get to learn a new track, especially one as prestigious as Portimão. This track has hosted multiple F1 and WEC races before so I’m excited just to add the Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final to that list. Lastly, I want to take the time to thank everyone at WTR for their efforts all year long leading up to the last races of the season. When we win the Team Championship it won’t be because of the drivers, it will be because of how hard-working and dedicated this whole team is.”

Aidan Yoder, No. 53 Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing (PRO)
“Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final. Where to begin? This has been a race weekend circled on my calendar since the beginning of the year. When you join this series, you have this event in the back of your mind that you are continuously preparing for. Ultimately, you want to shine on the world stage. In line with our theme of making this a learning year with Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing, this weekend presents one of the best opportunities. The World Final is a whole week of driving, not just a weekend. Track activities are planned Monday through Sunday so we’ll have more condensed running than I’ve ever had in my career. There will a lot of time to work on my skills, dial it in, and hone in on the nitty gritty that will help us go fast around the Autódromo do Algarve. My main goal for the weekend is to bring home the Team Championship for Wayne Taylor Racing. All the guys and girls have worked so hard all year and it would be a rewarding accomplishment. We’ll continue the learning process as always and I’ll make the most of my first race overseas.”

Ashton Harrison, No. 25 Harrison Contracting Company with Wayne Taylor Racing LST (PRO|AM)
“The World Final is always my favorite part of being a participant in the LST programs. All of the drivers coming together and getting to compete at a circuit most of us haven’t been at before is always very exciting. I’m looking forward to fighting for the maximum result in PRO|AM for Tom and I. At this point, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain so we will be in full attack mode. The Team Championship is top priority for all the drivers and crew at Prestige Performance with Wayne Taylor Racing. We’re ready to race!”

Tom Long, No. 25 Harrison Contracting Company with Wayne Taylor Racing LST (PRO|AM)
“I have not raced Portimao before, but very much looking forward to it! The track looks quite demanding with tons of elevation change and blind corners. The flow looks very fun and I hope we can get both the drivers and car setups dialed in quickly. I’ve been studying quite a bit over the weeks leading up to the event to prepare. It’ll be quite interesting as I’ve never been to a LST World Finals event before, and can anticipate the competition will be incredible. For Ashton and I, our goal is simply maximize our results. The final US round did not go our way, and we are aiming to end the season on a high note.”
