Advance Discount Tickets Now Available for ARCA Menards Series Season Finale at Toledo Speedway

Advance discount tickets to the ARCA Menards Series season finale at Toledo Speedway are now available at northwestern Ohio and southeastern Michigan Menards locations. Tickets to the Shore Lunch 200 presented by CGS Imaging, slated for Saturday, October 8, can be purchased for just $20, a savings of $10 off the race-day ticket price.

The Shore Lunch 200 presented by CGS Imaging will determine the ARCA Menards Series champion, marking the first time since 2011 that the series title has been determined at the series’ home track.

The day’s schedule will feature practice and qualifying for the ARCA Menards Series, an on-track autograph session with each of the drivers entered in the Shore Lunch 200 presented by CGS Images, as well as several former championship-winning drivers and team owners. Toledo Speedway will also crown season champions in the Salenbien Excavating Late Model Sportsman and The Vault Antiques and Treasures Factory Stock divisions, with the 200-lap main event putting an exclamation point on the on-track activities at 4 pm ET.

“It’s a tradition for a lot of tracks to end their season with a big weekend, and the Shore Lunch 200 presented by CGS Imaging will be big for sure,” said ARCA president and Toledo Speedway owner Ron Drager. “We have a great championship battle developing in the ARCA Menards Series between three great up-and-coming talents, Nick Sanchez, Rajah Caruth, and Daniel Dye. Each of those drivers has shown to be outstanding, with a very bright future. We look forward to seeing which of them will end up as the 2022 ARCA Menards Series champion.”

Several former ARCA Menards Series champions have already indicated they will participate in the weekend’s activities, including 1987 and 1991 driver and owner champions Bill and Cathy Venturini, 1982 series champion and current series official Scott Stovall, 1995 champion Andy Hillenburg, and 2019 team owner champion Billy Venturini, with additional former champions expected to confirm their participation in the coming weeks.

● Cole Custer will make his milestone 100th career NASCAR Cup Series start when he and his No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) head to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International for the penultimate road-course race of the season, Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen.

● Sunday’s 90-lap race will be Custer’s second on the seven-turn, 2.45-mile Watkins Glen circuit and his 14th Cup Series start on a road course. Custer equaled his career-best Cup Series road-course finish of ninth in the July 31 event on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway circuit. He also finished ninth in the October 2020 race on the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval.

● The 24-year-old from Ladera Ranch, California, started 19th and finished 18th in his Cup Series debut at The Glen last year, while the annual August event during his Rookie of the Year campaign in 2020 was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Custer also has raced at The Glen three times each in NASCAR’s Xfinity Series and K&N Pro Series East.

● In his three Watkins Glen starts in the Xfinity Series from 2017 through 2019, all in the No. 00 SHR Ford, Custer finished in the top-12 in all three, his best resulting in a sixth-place finish in 2018. He debuted with a 12th-place finish in 2017 and added a seventh-place finish in 2019.

● Custer’s three NASCAR K&N Pro Series East races at The Glen included finishes of fifth from the pole and third from the inside-second-row starting spot in his two most recent visits in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He led 17 laps in the 2015 event.

● Prior to his ninth-place finish at Indianapolis four weekends ago, Custer qualified 10th and finished 15th in the July 3 race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. ● In NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition, Custer has top-10s in all three of his road-course outings, all at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. His best was his most recent, a second-place run from the pole with a race-high 39 laps led in the No. 00 JR Motorsports entry in 2016.

You equaled your best career Cup Series road-course result of ninth at the previous road-course race at Indianapolis. What are your thoughts as you head to Watkins Glen this weekend?

“Watkins Glen’s always been one of my favorite road courses just because there’s so much flow to the racetrack and how fast it is. It’s pretty much hammer down the whole time and it’s just one of those places where you can really feel the flow of the racetrack and how each corner connects with the next one.”

Do you have a favorite part of the track at Watkins Glen?

“I think it’s the esses, going through there almost wide open with guardrails on either side. It’s almost a sketchy part of the track, but it’s fast and it’s fun. I think it’s definitely one of my favorite parts of the track where you can really get after it and carry a lot of speed.”

How would you evaluate the road-course program at SHR?

“I would say, for us as an organization, we’ve been solid in the road-course races. You definitely always want to be better, but I feel like we’ve been in the mix more often than not, at least. I feel like we can run top-10 most of the time and, from there, it’s just a matter of one adjustment and one thing going right on pit road and you’re in the top-five and looking for a win. So I think it’s just a matter of fine-tuning it a little bit, but I’ve been pretty happy with our road-course cars. It’s just a matter of having the whole race play out right.”

● Chase Briscoe and the No. 14 Ford Performance Racing School team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) are set to compete in the fifth of six road course events of the 2022 season this Sunday at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International. This year’s Go Bowling at the Glen marks Briscoe’s second NASCAR Cup Series start on the seven-turn, 2.45-mile circuit. In 2021, he started 27th and finished ninth.

● In his lone Xfinity Series start at Watkins Glen in 2019, Briscoe started and finished sixth.

● The 27-year-old racer from Mitchell, Indiana, has picked up two Xfinity Series wins on road courses. His first career Xfinity Series victory was in the series’ inaugural race on the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval in 2018. He also fulfilled his childhood dream of kissing the historic Yard of Bricks when he scored his fifth win of the 2020 season on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.

● Briscoe finished among the top-10 in all but three of the 10 road-course races in which he competed in the Xfinity Series. And in his lone NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start on a road course – the 2017 race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario – Briscoe finished seventh in a Ford F-150.

● This weekend’s race is the next-to-last event of the regular season. This year’s 16-driver playoff field will be set after the regular-season finale Aug. 27 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Briscoe sits 17th in the driver standings but is currently poised to make the Cup Series playoffs for the first time by virtue of his March 13 victory at Phoenix Raceway, provided there are no new first-time winners for this season at Watkins Glen or Daytona.

What makes Watkins Glen so different from other road courses?

“It’s not as technical as some of the others. You have to focus a lot on the balance of the car to be able to get around it. It’s a very high-speed track and there isn’t really a slow corner that you can use to set up a pass if you get behind. We’ve seen with the new car it’s been tough to pass, and guys have been really aggressive on the road courses, so I think we’ll for sure see some guys making moves that might not work.”

There are two races left in the regular season and you’re getting closer to being locked into the playoffs. Do you feel comfortable with where you are in the standings?

“I guess. It’s tough because we had a decent run at Michigan. It didn’t really hurt us in points and we came out feeling like we were going to be OK. Then at Richmond, we were running top-five for a little and in the top-10, and then the car caught on fire. That was really disappointing because we’ve been so strong on the short tracks and I felt like it was where we could put ourselves in a good place for the last two races. I still think we’re OK, but it really comes down to when Kurt (Busch) comes back and how these next two races go.”

Custer to make 100th Cup career start at Watkins Glen

Competing in his third full-time season in the NASCAR Cup Series, Cole Custer is set to achieve a milestone start. By competing in this weekend’s Cup event at Watkins Glen International, the driver of the No. 41 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford Mustang will reach 100 career starts in NASCAR’s premier series.

A native of Ladera Ranch, California, Custer made his Cup Series debut at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March 2018. By then, he was competing in his second season as a full-time Xfinity Series competitor for Stewart-Haas Racing. Driving the No. 51 Ford Mustang for Rick Ware Racing, Custer started 30th and finished 25th in his series debut. He competed in two additional Cup races for RWR at Pocono Raceway in June and at Richmond Raceway in September, where he finished 26th in both events.

Following back-to-back runner-up results in the final Xfinity Series standings in 2018 and 2019, Custer was promoted to the NASCAR Cup Series as a full-time competitor for Stewart-Haas Racing and in the No. 41 Ford Mustang. He kicked off his rookie Cup season with a 37th-place result in the Daytona 500 following a rear end failure. He rebounded three races later by finishing ninth at Phoenix Raceway in March, which marked his first top-10 result in the Cup circuit. 

After finishing no higher than 12th through the following 11 scheduled races, Custer notched his first top-five result in the Cup Series after finishing fifth at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July. Then, the Californian scored his first Cup career victory during the following weekend at Kentucky Speedway after he overtook Ryan Blaney, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. with a bold four-wide pass on the final lap and during an overtime attempt. The victory, which occurred in his 20th series start, made Custer the 194th different competitor to win in the Cup Series and it guaranteed the driver and his No. 41 SHR team a spot in the 2020 Cup Playoffs. Custer went on to record three additional top-10 results during the 26-race regular-season stretch before the Playoffs commenced. By then, Custer wrapped up the 2020 Cup Rookie-of-the-Year title since he was the lone rookie contender to make the Playoffs and would finish higher in the standings than his fellow contenders (Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell, John Hunter Nemechek, Brennan Poole and Quin Houff).

After finishing no higher than 12th during the Round of 16 in the Playoffs, Custer’s title hopes came to an end as he was one of four competitors eliminated from the postseason. Nonetheless, he went on to record a ninth-place result at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval in October before capping off his rookie Cup season in 16th place in the final standings.

Custer, who returned to Stewart-Haas Racing in 2021, kicked off his sophomore Cup season by finishing 11th in the Daytona 500. His lone highlights throughout the season, however, were a pair of 10th-place results (Talladega Superspeedway in April and Dover International Speedway in May) as he endured an inconsistent regular season stretch that prevented him from making the 2021 Cup Playoffs. Finishing no higher than 11th during the final 10 scheduled events, Custer capped off his sophomore Cup season in 26th place in the final standings.

Through 99 previous Cup starts, Custer has achieved one victory, one pole, two top-five results, 11 top-10 results, 17 laps led and an average-finishing result of 20.7. This season, he achieved his first Cup career pole at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Course in April and has recorded two top-10 results through the first 24-scheduled events, which are a pair of ninth-place runs at Atlanta Motor Speedway and at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course in July. He is also ranked in 25th place in the regular-season standings and trails the top-16 cutline to make the 2022 Cup Playoffs by 363 points with two regular-season events remaining to the schedule.

Custer is primed to make his 100th Cup Series career start at Watkins Glen International on Sunday, August 21, with the event’s coverage to occur at 3 p.m. ET on USA Network.

Hungry for a Road-Course Win

HUNTERSVILLE, North Carolina (Aug. 17, 2022) – As the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International for Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen, road-course races have evolved from rare occasions to a vital part of the schedule for NASCAR Cup Series competitors in recent seasons.

That’s because Sunday’s race on the 2.45-mile, seven-turn Watkins Glen circuit will be the fifth of six road-course events on the schedule in 2022. For Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 SNICKERS Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), the Las Vegas native always looked at the two traditional road courses at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway and Watkins Glen as a racing vacation for NASCAR’s top series, providing the chance to turn left and right for a couple of weekends each year. Now, with six of 36 races run on road courses, turning left and right is as important as short-track racing, which occupies six races on the schedule with two apiece at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, and Martinsville (Va.) Speedway each year.

For Busch, the two-time Cup Series champion, Watkins Glen is one of his favorite road courses on the schedule. He’s brought home two victories, seven top-five finishes, and 13 top-10s in 16 starts there.

After his inaugural Cup Series victory at The Glen in 2008, he nearly won for the second time in his 2011 and 2012 visits before finally breaking through again in 2013. A third career victory Sunday in New York’s scenic Finger Lakes Region would continue to solidify Busch and the SNICKERS team as a contender each time the series comes to town.

As far as overall road-course proficiency, Busch is tied with David Pearson and Mark Martin with four Cup Series road-course wins apiece. That’s some pretty good company, already. A fifth road-course win would tie him with Darrell Waltrip, Tim Richmond and Dan Gurney on the road-course wins list. The top three in all-time road-course wins in the Cup Series includes Chase Elliott and Jeff Gordon with seven apiece, while Tony Stewart is the all-time leader with nine wins.

So as Busch heads to Upstate New York for another round of road racing this weekend, he would like nothing more than to bring home a third win there, which would be a timely victory with only two regular-season races remaining before the 2022 Cup Series playoffs begin on Labor Day weekend. And Busch is certainly “hungry” for a win with his SNICKERS Camry as he looks for some momentum with the playoffs looming.

You’ve had some success at Watkins Glen. What makes it challenging and different than some other road courses you race at?

“I like going to Watkins Glen. It’s a road course, but it’s kind of a high-speed road course. The difference in the road courses at The Glen and Sonoma, you think of Sonoma as a Martinsville-type road course and you would think of Watkins Glen like a 2-mile oval, like a Fontana- or Michigan-type road course. Watkins Glen has some speed and has some wide-open spaces a little bit, but there is still a lot of great racing that happens there since you are able to out-brake people getting into the corners, or having a better run through the Bus Stop, or maybe getting by someone in the Carousel. It’s a fun place to race. We’ve struggled as a company on the road courses, but we’ve gained some ground lately and thought we had a top-10 going at Indy before getting spun in the late going. So I’m hoping we can get even better at Watkins Glen and stay out of the chaos that has happened at the end of a lot of these road-course races. I really like Watkins Glen and I hope we can have another solid run there with our SNICKERS Camry.”

What is the most fun part of a lap at Watkins Glen?

“To me, going through turn one and up through the esses is pretty cool and a lot of fun. It’s challenging, yet a lot of fun. As you come down the front straightaway, it’s a downhill braking zone, so you feel like you don’t have to brake as soon as you need to, but you need to in order to get slowed down for turn one. You try to stay out and get a good, hard cut to the right for turn one and accelerate out of there as quickly as you can to get set up for the esses. (You) stay wide on the left and then turn into the right-hander in (turn) two – smooth. You’re getting out of the gas but not using too much brake, just rolling off in there. As the car gets in there and loads, it actually takes a really big set because that’s when you start going back uphill. So the car will load up and that’s when you get back in the gas really wide open. And then you have to turn back to the left and be able to roll back out of it just enough to make the car bend. And then you’re back wide open again to the right-side guardrail and just keeping it tight through the right-hander that we call turn five.”

What is the most challenging part of a lap at Watkins Glen?

“I’d say the most challenging thing is the culmination of the Inner Loop and the Carousel. All of that together is a lot harder to figure out how to make speed through there than just going through there traditionally. That’s an area of the racetrack a lot of guys really try to abuse. They’ll get off on the right side, get off on the left side and throw dirt up on the racetrack and then it just makes for a real mess.”

What does it take to be successful at Watkins Glen?

“At Watkins Glen, the biggest thing is pit strategy. Obviously, you’ve got to pick and choose when you’re going to pit and stick to your plan. Whether or not we can still do it on two stops, I’m unsure of. You definitely have to be good at being able to carry speed there, obviously, through the esses and down the long backstretch. That seems to be the key part of the racetrack.”

MONTEREY, California (August 17, 2022) – Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) has returned to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca (WRLS) for its second year as the official sanctioning body of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Monterey Pre-Reunion. A successful and well-run Pre-Reunion last weekend has set the grand stage for this weekend’s Rolex Reunion that gets underway with an expanded schedule starting Wednesday and running non-stop straight through Sunday at WRLS.

After debuting at the Monterey Reunions in 2021 to begin a multi-year partnership, HSR continues this year providing its expertise and vast collective experience in race event operations, full technical scrutineering, competitor and participant registration and vetting entries for the blockbuster Monterey events that are generally regarded as the premier historic and vintage motorsports events in North America.

In keeping with the growth of the more-than week long Monterey Reunion schedules, HSR has undertaken additional responsibilities this year, including running the inaugural Corkscrew Hillclimb this Sunday. For the first time in WeatherTech Raceway’s 65-year history, competitors will run counter-course from near the start/finish line before racing uphill to the iconic Corkscrew for the finish.

“The expertise, professionalism and welcoming spirit shown by the HSR team is aligned with how we want to treat our entrants,” said John Narigi, President and General Manager of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “HSR is a first-class organization that cares deeply about car authenticity and customer relationships to keep elevating the Rolex Reunion experience.”

Established in the mid-1970s, HSR is led by HSR President David Hinton, who was a majority owner for the last 10 years and guided HSR’s sale to IMSA early in 2022. Hinton remains at the helm as president and continues to steer the organization through one of its biggest periods of growth in the more than 40-year history of HSR.

“HSR has hit the ground running already this past weekend with the Monterey Pre-Reunion,” Hinton said. “It’s a great feeling to be welcomed back by not only the participants but also our good friends at WRLS and the many volunteers who make this event one of the best in the world.”

This year’s Rolex Reunion celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and showcases an honor roll of legendary Le Mans race cars to kick off the official centenary celebrations leading up to 2023’s milestone race at Circuit de la Sarthe.

“It’s a massive honor for HSR to be involved in the first of many events that will be celebrating 100 years of the Le Mans 24 hours,” Hinton said. “What the WRLS team has put together for this weekend is something truly special, with close to 20 Le Mans overall winners on display, numerous class winners and so many significant and memorable Le Mans entries.”

In addition to the cars competing on track, there will also be a selection of significant cars exhibited in a large Le Mans Heritage Display Presented by Motul.

The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the largest event held during the famed Monterey Classic Car Week.   • Hinton had the pleasure of being a part of the Rolex Reunion advisory board and car selection committee this year and also helped arrange for several cars with strong HSR ties to be part of the Le Mans Heritage Display. HSR member Malcolm Ross has brought his immaculate No. 1 Rothmans Porsche 962 that won Le Mans overall in 1986 to the Rolex Reunion. Chassis No. 003, the 962 was co-driven to the win by the all-star lineup of Al Holbert, Derek Bell and Hans Stuck. Another longtime HSR competitor answering the call is Scott Hughes who displays his BMW CSL that was co-driven to a 1973 Le Mans class victory by Toine Hezemans and Dieter Quester. “It’s wonderful to see all the hard work put in by so many people come to life in the paddock and out on the track,” Hinton said. “It’s been a true team effort this year.”

SOUTH BOSTON, VA……For the first time in his many years of racing at South Boston Speedway Scott Phillips is on top of the track’s Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division point standings.

With only two races left in the points season including the 25-lap Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division race that will be part of the Saturday, August 20 Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event the Halifax, Virginia resident faces the challenge of protecting his 10-point lead over Johnny Layne and his 17-point edge over Jimmy Wade.

“The last two races will be challenging,” Phillips pointed out. “I can’t lay back too much and protect myself too much and have somebody catch me or I get caught up in a mess that I shouldn’t be in.

“I expect it’s going to be a battle,” added Phillips. “I’ve got to stay consistent, stay up front, and finish in the top couple of cars or either right behind or right in front of Johnny (Layne) to not lose the 10-point lead I have in these last two races.”

Phillips has been the model of consistency this season. In his 10 starts Phillips has finished second six times and has nine top-five finishes. He has not finished outside of the top 10 in any of this season’s races.

That consistency is what Phillips will be looking to maintain in this weekend’s event and over the course of the season’s final two races.

“I’m just going to try to stay consistent like I have done all season,” Phillips explained. “I will try to qualify as far up front as I can, be careful on the track, and don’t overdo it and take myself out by hitting the wall or getting into a wreck.”

The 2022 season is the most consistent season Phillips has enjoyed in many years. That has come even with a late-season change in cars.

“Being this consistent is real satisfying,” Phillips remarked. “It feels real good. In the past it has been inconsistent, up-and-down. It has been really good to get up there, hang around and run with the fast boys.”

Switching to a new car did not dent Phillips’ consistency. He has competed in his new car in the past two events at South Boston Speedway and has continued to be among the frontrunners.

“The car I started with this year ran really well, but it had been badly wrecked the other year,” Phillips noted. “I built a new car to see if it would be a little more consistent. It’s got the same engine the old car had, and it’s staying right there at the front like the first car.”

The only thing Phillips has not done this season is win a race.

“Winning a race would be huge,” Phillips said. “It’s disappointing not having won a race this season. I feel like I’ve had the car that could have won a couple of races this year, and it just didn’t unfold the way I wanted it to.”

He hopes that will change in the Saturday, August 20 Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event.

“The next race is Italian Delight Family Restaurant Night race, and that’s the race that I won last year,” Phillips noted. “I’m hoping I can get a repeat.”

A full program of NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series racing action, special guest appearances and a colorful fireworks display following the final race of the night will all be part of the celebration Saturday night, August 20 as South Boston Speedway celebrates its 65th anniversary with the Italian Delight Family Restaurant presents South Boston Speedway’s 65th Anniversary Celebration event.

Twin 65-lap races for the NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series Late Model Stock Car Division competitors headline the night’s seven-race card. A 50-lap race for the Budweiser Limited Sportsman Division, a 25-lap race for the Southside Disposal Pure Stock Division and a 20-lap race for the Virginia State Police HEAT Hornets Division are also included in the NASCAR racing action.

A pair of vintage races will give fans a glimpse back in time. Member competitors of the Southern Ground Pounders Vintage Racing Club will compete in a 25-lap race in their vintage Modified and Late Model Sportsman cars. In addition, members of the East Coast Flathead Ford Racing Association will compete in a 25-lap race that will feature vintage Modified and Sportsman Division cars.

A colorful fireworks display to celebrate the speedway’s 65th anniversary will follow the night’s final race.

Saturday’s race-day schedule has practice starting at 3:30 p.m. Grandstand gates will open at 5:30 p.m., qualifying begins at 6 p.m. and the first race of the night will get the green flag at 7 p.m.
