How Soon Will Quantum Computing Become a Mainstream Technology?

We are fast approaching a technological era when quantum computing will become part and parcel of our daily lives. If you think about it, we’ll soon find ourselves sunk in the tech so deep that we won’t even imagine a world where it never existed. 

The same happened with the internet. We practically do everything online. Rather than sending texts, we use messaging apps like WhatsApp, shop online on Amazon instead of going to the physical store and even use ride-hailing services such as Uber instead of waiting for a bus or taxi. Likewise, in countries like Japan, where there are currently no in-person casinos, players prefer playing on online casino Japan platforms instead of planning tedious and expensive tips to Macao or Singapore. 

No doubt, if the internet is taken out of the equation today, life becomes intolerable because it has become a basic day-to-day tool. And soon enough, the same will be the case for quantum computing. Heck, with a global internet penetration rate of 63%, most of the world’s population has access to a computing device – which can be considered a bridge to the quantum computing realm. However, before we dive into the question of mainstream quantum computing adoption, we’ll take a few steps back and get to understand what it entails.

What is Quantum Computing?

To grasp how quantum computing works, you need first to understand how normal computing works. A digital computer is an arithmetic machine designed to perform cheap mathematical calculations. Of course, as technology has advanced, there has been a gradual rise of software programs designed to perform more complicated tasks. 

As such, everywhere you go today, you will come across a computer performing a task that may seem mundane but has been made possible with a set of highly complicated software. Tasks such as dry-cleaning, loading gas on your vehicle, using your dishwasher or even adjusting your AC, wouldn’t be possible without computing power.

Quantum computing, however, takes things all to a whole new level. It is a new generation of technology that makes use of computers said to be 158 million times more powerful than what we are used to. As you can imagine, there’s insane potential for what a machine running on quantum technology can do. It essentially makes standard computers seem like glorified calculators in this context. So, how exactly does quantum computing work?

The Functioning of Quantum Computing

All the computers in the world work in a pre-defined manner such that they process and store information in the form of binary digits called bits. The bits can only exist in two values that is zero and one. Using these numbers, a computer can then create a binary code that the computer reads to carry out a specific task. 

Quantum computing, on the other hand, borrows heavily from the quantum theory in physics, from which its name is derived. In a nutshell, the quantum theory deals with atoms and the smaller sub-particles inside them. And as you dig deeper into the subject, the world of quantum particles is very different from what we are used to. For instance, quantum particles can exist in several states simultaneously. This is sort of the same theory that quantum computing uses. 

So, while regular computers can only use zero and one to create a binary code, a quantum computer makes use of both at the same time. Therefore, a quantum computer doesn’t need one process to end to begin another. For example, imagine you are trying to solve two equations at a go. A standard computer would try and solve one before going to another one. Instead, a Quantum computer would try to solve both at a go. This is what makes them exclusively faster than traditional computers.

How Soon Can We Expect Quantum Tech to hit Mainstream Channels?

Quantum computing is still in its infancy stages. However, it is anticipated that industries like finance will undoubtedly have a big boost and will start using it around 2025. Goldman Sachs, a global investment company, recently announced that they’d be able to introduce quantum algorithms to price financial instruments within the next 5 years. 

Similarly, according to a recent report dubbed ‘The Next Tech Revolution: Quantum Computing’ from McKinsey & Company, we’ll see the widespread use of quantum computing strategies by 2026. McKinsey & Company is a global management consulting firm that has been in operation since 1926.

Let’s Prep for Quantum in the Meantime

When commercialized, the quantum tech will mean a different ball game altogether. The digital machines we are used to cannot get close to doing the things that quantum computing will be able to achieve. Rightly so, when quantum technology becomes the norm, the Harvard Business Review anticipates ground-breaking advances in the following fields:

  • Chemical and biological engineering
  • Cybersecurity
  • Artificial intelligence
  • Complex manufacturing
  • Financial services.

That said, companies like Goldman Sachs need to lay a proper foundation to reap these gains. And as is the case with adopting any new commercial tech, the anticipated initial costs will likely be high. However, looking at the gains to be made, the investments will almost certainly be worth every penny in the long run.

Harvick victorious at Richmond, Earns 60th career win

Kevin Harvick went to victory lane Sunday evening at Richmond Raceway, taking home the NASCAR Cup Series trophy in the Federated Auto Parts 400 for his 60th career win.

It marked his second consecutive win after ending a 65-race winless drought at Michigan International Speedway last Sunday.

After his triumph at Michigan, Harvick said, “Everybody who doubted us doesn’t know us.”

This week he doubled down.

When asked if he expected to win back-to-back, he said, in part, “You know, I didn’t know. It’s like I said last week, the cars have been running good week in and week out, and you see that we have a lot better understanding of what’s going on with how we adjusted on the car after the first run and were able to get our car handling a lot better. I think as it got dark, the racetrack really came to our Mobil 1 Ford Mustang.”

Harvick is now tied with Kyle Busch on the all-time Cup Series wins list.

He led 55 laps in his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, holding off a hard-charging Christopher Bell, who finished second. Chris Buescher, Denny Hamlin and Chase Elliott rounded out the top five finishers.

When Bell was asked what he needed to catch Harvick who had 12-lap fresher tires, he said, “I don’t know, I got held up a little bit there on the front side, and I guess when you’re splitting hairs like that, that probably cost me the race. That’s two races in a row here at Richmond. At the beginning of the year we kind of had that same strategy and barely missed fifth coming to the line, and today it was the win.”

He also acknowledged his pit crew, saying, “The pit crew really came through at the end there with some blazing stops and allowed us to get in front of the 11 (Hamlin) who was on the same strategy as us and get up there and contend.”

Joey Logano, who led a race-high 222 laps, faded in the closing laps to finish sixth, was followed by Martin Truex Jr., Aric Almirola, Kyle Busch and Ryan Blaney to round out the top 10.

Elliott, the current point standings leader, was the only Chevrolet driver to finish in the top ten and acknowledged that the team needs to improve before the Playoffs begin.

“Obviously we want to be better,” he said, “and Michigan was a big time struggle for us. This weekend was too all the way up until the last few runs. We will go to work and try to finish these last two weeks strong and get ready for Darlington.”

With only one open spot left in the Playoffs and two races remaining, Blaney improved his position over Truex to a +26 points advantage after earning 11 stage points throughout the race.

1. Chase Elliott: Elliott finished fifth at Richmond, posting his ninth top five of the year.

“Short track racing is the best,” Elliott said. “There were a lot of cars making contact on the track, which I’m sure the fans love. But really, what the fans really want to see are drivers making contact, off the track.”

2. Joey Logano: Logano powered to the Stage 2 win, but faded late and eventually finished sixth at Richmond.

“We led a race-high 222 laps,” Logano said, “but once the sun went down, we struggled to find the right balance. That’s what’s known as the ‘NASCAR gods throwing shade’ at me.”

3. Kevin Harvick: One week after winning at Michigan, Harvick surged late and held off Chris Buecher and Christopher Bell to win at Richmond.

“It was Cup win number 60,” Harvick said. “That’s a number that some of these younger drivers have a hard time fathoming. They hear ‘Kevin Harvick’ and ’60’ and think, ‘I thought he was older.'”

4. Denny Hamlin: Hamlin finished fourth at Richmond.

“Kevin Harvick is the hottest driver in NASCAR right now,” Hamlin said. “Once the NASCAR playoffs start, I contend Harvick will be a ‘4’ to be reckoned with.”

5. Martin Truex Jr.: Truex was clipped early by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who missed pit road and swerved into the path of Truex’s No. 19 Toyota. Truex fell a lap down but recovered to post a seventh at Richmond.

“Stenhouse’s car was primarily sponsored by Kleenex,” Truex said. “That should come in handy for him because as I’m in a fight to make the playoffs, I don’t need a snot-nosed kid getting in my way.”

6. Ryan Blaney: Blaney ran in the top 10 for the majority of the race on his way to a 10th in the Federated Auto Parts 400.

“My car sported the ‘Body Armor’ paint scheme,” Blaney said. “And in today’s racing climate, I can’t stress enough the importance of having Body Armor. ‘Body armor’ is practically a must-have, especially with Ross Chastain on the track.”

7. Christopher Bell: Bell charged late at Richmond, but couldn’t catch Kevin Harvick and settled for the runner-up finish in the Federated Auto Parts 400.

“I tried my best to catch Kevin Harvick there at the end,” Bell said. “But I just couldn’t get closer to the ‘Closer.’

“But congratulations to Harvick on his 60th win. That’s 58 more Cup wins that I have, and 59 more facial hairs than I have.’

8. Kyle Larson: Larson started on the pole at Richmond and finished 14th, one lap down, in the Federated Auto Parts 400.

“We just couldn’t get the car dialed in,” Larson said. “So it was a frustrating day for me. But I’ve learned that when I’m frustrated, I should keep my head down and keep my mouth shut, with special priority on the ‘keep my mouth shut’ part.”

“But answer me this. Is there a valid reason the Federated Auto Parts 400 is not abbreviated the ‘FAP 400?’ I’m guessing there is”.

9. Kyle Busch: Busch finished ninth in the Federated Auto Parts 400.

“I made contact with Ross Chastain at one point during the race,” Busch said. “But then again, who hasn’t?

“Kevin Harvick tied me with his 60th Cup series win. That does not make me ‘Happy.’ And it may be the first time I’ve been on the same ‘page’ with Harvick.”

10. Ross Chastain: Chastain won Stage 1 and finished 18th at Richmond.

“Another day,” Chastain said, “another wreck that was my fault. I’m pretty sure I’ve set a record this year, for most apologies in one season. My No. 1 Chevy had ‘Be A Moose’ on it; maybe it should have read ‘Be At Fault.'”

● Maintained No. 7 qualifying position from Q1. Pruett’s Q2 run on Saturday was 3.880 ET at 317.12 mph.

● Secured No. 7 qualifying position based off Friday’s Q1 run. In Q3 on Saturday, Pruett ran 3.834 ET at 315.64 mph.

● Advanced to Round 2 on Sunday:

●  Round 1: 4.161 ET at 264.70 mph, defeated Doug Foley (5.149 ET at 139.75 mph).

●  Round 2: 4.810 ET at 225.26 mph, lost to Justin Ashley (3.843 ET at 317.57 mph).

● Hagan clinched his position in the Countdown to the Championship by maintaining his second-place standing in points.

● Pruett’s Round 2 appearance maintained her sixth-place standing in points with two races remaining before the six-event Countdown to the Championship begins with the Pep Boys NHRA Nationals Sept. 15-18 at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania.

● Pruett’s Top Fuel dragster and Hagan’s Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car featured a Mopar 85th Anniversary scheme, which will also be highlighted during next weekend’s NHRA Nationals at Brainerd (Minn.) International Raceway.

“Sometimes you would rather have a little bit of luck on your side, and that’s what we had going into eliminations today. We’ve gotten into a comfortable spot with the car because it’s been acting so well to be able to push, and we pushed a little too hard in E1. We smoked way down the track and I was able to pedal twice and recover, which pedaling hasn’t particularly been my forte. It’s something we’ve been working on as a team and that worked out for us right there. In E2, we had a compound throttle mounting malfunction that hindered our performance after the line. Even though the results don’t quite show it with the win lights, it’s one of the best reacting cars that we’ve had all year. We’re making a lot of headway. We’re finally able to reference other tracks now and other situations and build on that. That’s something for the first quarter of the year we weren’t able to do. As we finish out the second quarter, we’re really scaling up our drive.”

Matt Hagan, Driver of the Mopar 85th Anniversary Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car

“I could definitely taste the final today and wanted it bad up there. Coming off the Western Swing where we had three first-round exits, I’m really pleased with the momentum we had and the direction we were able to turn the car around in. Qualifying was everything, so it was great qualifying fourth to be in the top-half of the bracket and have a good ladder. We have to stay focused on that Friday night hit and put ourselves in a position to be good for the rest of the weekend, since we’re seeing some hot racetracks that make the conditions a bit tougher on Saturday. Unfortunately, something went wrong there in the semifinals. There was some type of ignition issue. It didn’t really fire off on all cylinders. It wasn’t the typical car we had all weekend. I kind of knew something was wrong off the bat, then some cylinders went out and I had to click it off early, so I didn’t hit the wall. My guys are going over everything with a fine-toothed comb to figure out what it was to get ready for Brainerd. Brainerd can sometimes be cool out there, so it’s one of those racetracks where Dickie Venables (crew chief) really shines.”

● Harvick’s victory in the Federated Auto Parts 400 marked the 95th overall win for SHR. It was the organization’s 69th points-paying NASCAR Cup Series victory, its third of the season and its second at Richmond.

● SHR scored its first win at Richmond on April 26, 2015 with former driver Kurt Busch.

● This was SHR’s 33rd NASCAR Cup Series victory with Ford. Kurt Busch won the 2017 Daytona 500 to deliver the organization’s first win with Ford.

● Harvick’s win in the Federated Auto Parts 400 was his milestone 60th career NASCAR Cup Series victory, tying him with Kyle Busch for ninth on the series’ all-time win list. It took us a few months, but we’ve had three or maybe four months now of really solid runs, really good speed, ever since Dover really, that we’ve been really close. We’ve had some bad luck, had some mistakes that I’ve got to clean up. We’ve made progress through all of it. The results don’t always show it. We were running really well at the 600 and we ended up upside down. There’s no doubt in my mind we could’ve competed for a win at the Indy road course and we were on fire. We’re making highlight reels for all the wrong reasons. We’ve been fast in those processes, though. We just have to put it all together to show those results like we did here today. “When the clouds came and the track cooled, we kind of lost it. The first couple runs of the race we were so fast. We drove from 32nd up to the top-five. Our Smithfield Ford Mustang was really good on the long run. We took care of the tires really well and it did everything I needed it to do. As the pace picked up and the track cooled off, I just couldn’t get the car to rotate like I needed it to and just couldn’t quite carry the speed those other cars could. It was a good day. Chevrolet adds to victory total at Heartland Motorsports Park

• Troy Coughlin Jr. earns second consecutive Pro Stock victory
• No. 3 qualifier John Force is runner-up in Funny Car in 264th career final round
• Tyler Cassil drives Chevrolet COPO Camaro to Stock, Super Stock wins

TOPEKA, Kan. (Aug. 14, 2022) — Troy Coughlin Jr.’s resurgence couldn’t have come at a better time in National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock competition.

Coughlin, the No. 2 qualifier for the Menards NHRA Nationals presented by PetArmor in the JEGS.com Chevrolet Camaro SS, earned his second consecutive Wally by dispatching No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson in the final round at Heartland Motorsports Park.

With one Pro Stock race remaining before the Countdown to the Championship, Coughlin has climbed to fourth in the standings.

“Everyone at Elite Motorsports is working their tails off making this car work. Just an exciting day and we can’t wait to keep it going at Indy,” said Coughlin, who had registered three runner-up finishes in 52 career Pro Stock races before breaking through for his inaugural victory two weeks ago at Seattle.

In a rematch of the Funny Car final last month at Sonoma Raceway, John Force fell to Bob Tasca III. Force, the No. 3 qualifier in the PEAK Antifreeze and Coolant Chevrolet Camaro SS, advanced to the 264th final round of his illustrious career and closed to six points of third place Ron Capps in the standings with two regular-season races left.

“We look good heading into the Countdown in a couple weeks, think we are just a few points out of the top three,” Force said. “Loved racing here in Topeka. I appreciate all the fans that came out and braved the heat. They make it all worth it.”

Force, a 10-time winner at the racetrack, slipped past teammate, No. 2 qualifier and Funny Car points leader Robert Hight, driving the Automobile Club of Southern California Camaro SS, in the semifinals on the way to his 264th career final round.

Brittany Force, the No. 6 qualifier in the Monster Energy/Flav-R-Pac Chevrolet dragster, lost in the first round for only the second time in 14 races this season. Force, who won at Topeka as the top qualifier in 2021, retained the Top Fuel points lead. Teammate Austin Prock, driving the Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet dragster, also fell in the first round.

Coughlin got the best of points leader Erica Enders and her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Camaro SS for the second race in a row in one semifinal. Anderson defeated KB Racing teammate Kyle Koretsky, driving the Lucas Oil Camaro SS, in the other semifinal en route to his 169th career Pro Stock final round.

“With a team like Elite Motorsports, it’s hard to know what’s next,” Coughlin said. “They are so passionate; everybody works on all the cars. It’s contagious.”

Anderson, driving the HendrickCars.com Camaro SS, is seeking to join John Force (155 career Funny Car wins) as the only drivers in NHRA professional classes with 100 victories.

“I know it’s going to happen in good time,” said the five-time Pro Stock champion, whose round win total stands at 897. “I remember trying to get No. 50, I remember trying to get No. 75. It was a struggle for both of those, and No. 100 should certainly be a struggle, just as it’s proving to be. It’s a little like chasing a snake, but I’m going to catch that snake.”

Tyler Cassil of Belton, Missouri, became the 29th driver in NHRA history to win in two different classes in the same event. Cassil drove his Chevrolet COPO Camaro to the victory in Stock Eliminator and Super Stock. COPO Camaro drivers have claimed seven national event Stock Eliminator wins this season.

Team Chevy Top Fuel and Funny Car drivers are back in action Aug. 19-21 at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. FOX will telecast eliminations at 3:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 14. Chevrolet Pro Stock teams will join the nitro cars at the U.S. Nationals — the final event of the regular season — on Sept. 2-5 in Indianapolis.

For the first time since Gainesville, Florida, we were out in the first round. The heat and humidity made running a challenge. First round we had a cylinder out from the step and there was no way to recover and catch Brown before the stripe. To find the positive in the weekend, we remained in the points lead and we are locked into the Countdown to the Championship. We are all looking forward to Brainerd next weekend and getting back to our normal routine.”

AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRAND/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER: “I’m lucky to have good teachers in my corner. My dad definitely gives me the right attitude. He told me before the run, I have to believe in myself and he told me to go up there and run a .040 light and that’s what I did. Unfortunately, I have a lot of practice riding these things out when it’s blown up and spilled oil out of it but I tried to get stopped as soon as possible. “The track was very similar there early and late, if anything, I feel like it got a little faster. It wasn’t a huge deal, just needed to be a little more forward there to have a shot. It was really odd, I didn’t think it was driving any better, but in comparison to people around us, we were going forward. So, just normal Richmond. Just more confusing I feel like. I have been here and had cars like that where you are not driving good, but you are moving forward. Then you will have days where you feel like your car is driving good and you are not going anywhere or vice versa. This place is really strange and the track had gained a lot of grip there at the end too. There were obviously a lot of different strategies going on, and it was nice to get a top five out of a tough day yesterday.”

WHERE DO YOU FEEL THIS TEAM IS AS WE RUMBLE TOWARD THE PLAYOFFS?

“Yeah, obviously we want to be better and Michigan was a big time struggle for us. This weekend was too all the way up until the last few runs. We will go to work and try to finish these last two weeks strong and get ready for Darlington.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 HUK PERFORMANCE FISHING CAMARO ZL1 – Finished 16th

“I had fun at Richmond Raceway today and everyone on the No. 3 Huk Performance Fishing Chevrolet team did a great job. We started off the race loose. We came to pit road during the stage break and my crew chief, Justin Alexander, made a good call to get my car tightened up during the second stage. On lap 243 we caught a lucky break by catching a caution, saving us a lap. We struggled most of the day with the handling of our Chevrolet, but towards the end of the race we hit on a setup that really worked well with the track. We were posting solid lap times in Stage 3, even on old tires. I wish we could’ve had that at the beginning of the race. We would’ve been jamming. All-in-all, we’ll take this 16th-place finish and head to Watkins Glen International.”

DID YOU SEE CHRISTOPHER BELL COMING, AND WERE YOU GETTING A LITTLE BIT WORRIED THERE? “Well, I knew he was coming, but I forgot to shift down the front straightaway the last time. I was not paying attention and he got closer than he should have. I made a mistake there a couple laps doing the same thing. I wasn’t shifting on the back and I was shifting in the front. There was a lot going on, and made a couple mistakes, let him get too close.”

WITH THIS LEVEL OF MOMENTUM FOR YOU AND THE 4 TEAM, HOW DANGEROUS CAN THIS TEAM BE IN THE PLAYOFFS? “We’re just going to keep doing the things that we’re doing. I think we just have to keep an open mind about things and keep progressing and keep understanding the car, understanding what we could have done better today, understanding what we could have done better in qualifying yesterday and do the same thing over and over. I want to say hi to Piper and Keelan, Delana and everybody at home.”

CHRIS BUESCHER, No. 17 Fastenal Ford Mustang — Finished 3rd

HOW CLOSE WERE YOU? “Really close. Everyone on our Fastenal Mustang did such a tremendous job overnight because we didn’t know we were in this position yesterday. I didn’t qualify real well, and everyone worked hard and had a fantastic race car today. I think it’s a little easy with this format to feel like third place doesn’t matter, but it’s nice to be close and to keep progressing and getting better as we’ve gotten through the summer. Really neat to finish here. Really proud of everybody. Just burned the rear tires up. Ultimately that’s on me. Lap traffic didn’t do us any favors, either, but ultimately just got to keep the rears under us a little bit better so we can have a little bit better shot there to get after him for the win.”

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN SEEING LATELY IN TERMS OF THE ORGANIZATION? “You know, it’s not really fair to just look at results because at the beginning of the year we didn’t fire off as good as we thought. We didn’t have the improvement. It took us a few months, but we’ve had three or maybe four months now of really solid runs, really good speed, ever since Dover really, that we’ve been really close. We’ve had some bad luck, had some mistakes that I’ve got to clean up. We’ve made progress through all of it. The results don’t always show it. We were running really well at the 600 and we ended up upside down. There’s no doubt in my mind we could have competed for a win at the Indy Road Course and we were on fire. We’re making highlight reels for all the wrong reasons. We’ve been fast in those processes, though. We just have to put it all together to show those results like we did here today.

ROAD COURSE AT WATKINS GLEN AND THEN DAYTONA COMING UP. WHAT DO YOU THINK? “I’m excited. I’m ready for the win.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford Mustang — Finished 6th

YOU LED 222 LAPS TODAY AND THEN IS STARTED TO GO AWAY IN THAT LAST RUN. WHAT HAPPENED? “Yeah, I think just as the sun went down and the track cooled off and lost some turn on our car. Kevin (Harvick) and some others got a lot better the last couple of runs in the race. When it was hot and slick that was probably our strength with the Shell Pennzoil Mustang. We had good turn and then once it cooled off we lost the turn but still weren’t real good on the exits. Then you start playing defenst and running too hard. It was a downhill slope from there. I was hoping for a late race caution, that was our only prayer at the end there. Overall we got a stage win and playoff points and that is something to be proud of. It stinks when you say we led 222 laps but not the right one.”

YOU GUYS HAVE GOTTEN GREAT RESULTS LATELY WITHOUT THE SPEED. TODAY YOU HAD SPEED. HOW MUCH ENCOURAGEMENT DOES THAT GIVE YOU AS WE HEAD TOWARDS THE PLAYOFFS? “It means we are executing really well throughout the race and able to get something out of a race when we don’t have a fast enough car. When you have days like today when you have a fast enough car you want to capitalize. We did as far as playoff points and a stage win but not enough at the end of the race. We need these ones to be race wins instead of just stage wins but I feel like we are starting to come into our own here and getting a little more solid and situated more in the top five than we have been. I am proud of that. We just have to keep that going.”

ARIC ALMIROLA, No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang — Finished 8th

“When the clouds came and the track cooled we kind of lost it. The first couple runs of the race we were so fast. We drove from 32nd up to the top-five. Our Smithfield Ford Mustang was really good on the long run. We took care of the tires really well and it did everything I needed it to do. As the pace picked up and the track cooled off I just couldn’t get the car to rotate like I needed it to and just couldn’t quite carry the speed those other cars could. It was a good day. We have had a rough month, so to come here and rebound and have a good run — we need a win, but to have a good run is a confidence booster.”
