Ty Dillon Post-Race Thoughts: “Tough ending to the week that’s for sure. I haven’t been able to see the replay yet to give an accurate description of what happened there with the 31 car, but no matter what, you never want to be out of the race on lap six. This 42 team and I aren’t going to give up on each other. We still have almost half the season left and we are going to give it everything we’ve got. Time to shift our attention to Pocono.”

Erik Jones Post-Race Thoughts: “We were just off a bit today. We were plowing early, made adjustments throughout the race to try to make our FOCUSfactor Chevy better and then we were too loose at the end. We’re still learning with these cars – it’s hard to predict how it will react sometimes and we just have to keep building our notebooks and build on each week. We’ll keep learning and refocus for next week at Pocono.”

Burton Finishes 26th New Hampshire

Harrison Burton and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane started 31st and finished 26th in Sunday’s Ambetter 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but those numbers don’t tell the whole story of the team’s efforts on the Magic Mile.

Burton took off at the drop of the green flag and had just cleared a group of drivers when a multi-car crash occurred in his rear-view mirror on Lap 6.

He continued on and ran around 25th place for the remainder of the first 70-lap Stage. He ended that segment in 24th place, one lap down but in the free pass position, which allowed him to rejoin the lead lap for the start of Stage Two.

In the second Stage, Burton continued to run at the back of the lead lap and escaped serious damage on Lap 92 when he was spun into the outside wall due to contact from Corey LaJoie, whose car suffered a mechanical failure.

When Ryan Blaney spun to bring out another caution at Lap 145, Motorcraft/Quick Lane crew chief Brian Wilson elected to bring the No. 21 Mustang to pit road early for a major adjustment.

Returning to the track with a better-driving Mustang, Burton drove up to 19th place at the end of the second Stage.

At that point, Wilson made a strategy play to gain track position and left Burton on the track as others made pit stops.

The No. 21 cycled into the lead, and led laps 189-191. It marked the third-straight race that Burton has led at some point.

Burton fell back a bit but hung onto a top-10 spot until the caution flag flew with 97 laps remaining for a spin by Todd Gilliland.

On the ensuing pit stop, a tire from the No. 21 Mustang rolled into an adjacent pit stall, drawing a penalty for interference. That put Burton at the tail of the field for the restart.
He ended the race in 26th place, one lap behind the leaders.

Burton and the Wood Brothers team now head to Pocono Raceway for a 400-miler on July 24.

“We fought hard all day and never gave up, but I can’t say that it wasn’t challenging. We started really far back in the field in our Bass Pro Shops / TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet, and it can be hard to start that far back because you’re prone to end up in messes. It was a wild day. We had a little brush up with another car on track and it knocked the tow out of our Chevy, then we got spun on pit road and the guys had to do a backwards pit stop. Still, Justin Alexander and the team never gave up with working on adjustments to make the car better and with about 50 laps to go our Chevy really came to life. It was so fast, but then we had to pit under green with less than 30 laps to go for a flat tire. We’ll take this finish and head to Pocono to try and win and clinch a spot in the NASCAR Playoffs.” -Austin Dillon

Team Chevy drivers take first step to sweeping the Swing

MORRISON, Colo. (July 17, 2022) — Robert Hight said “you can’t sweep the Swing if you don’t start here.”

It was a good start to achieving that goal for the driver of the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS, who collected his fifth victory of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) season and 58th of his Funny Car career by defeating Bob Tasca III in the final at Bandimere Speedway.

The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series’ Western Swing continues this week at Sonoma, California – where Hight has won the past three times NHRA has visited (2021, ’19 and ’18) — and concludes at the end of the month in Kent, Washington. Sixteen-time NHRA champion John Force is the only Funny Car driver to sweep the three-race set (1994).

“Good job by this Auto Club team. Their back was to the wall all day,” said Hight, who increased his Funny Car points lead with the victory. “We didn’t have lane choice the last two rounds and that was a masterful job of getting this race car down the track. Jimmy (Prock) and Chris (Cunningham) did on a little tougher lane.

“To have five wins at this point in the season, it’s surreal. Everything is working from top to bottom and we’re just going to try to stay focused and keep working. It’s been a great first half of the season, but these next 11 are going to be even tougher.”

Matt Hartford earned his first Pro Stock win since May 2021 in Houston by defeating No. 1 qualifier Aaron Stanfield, driving the Janac Brothers Camaro SS, in the final.

“We came here in ’19 and we should have won the deal there, but Greg (Anderson) had a better car than us,” said Hartford, driver of the Total Seal Camaro SS. “But we came here this weekend, and we had a good platform and we qualified pretty well.

“We turned this car around in 20 minutes and we would not have been able to do it without the assistance of the KB Racing guys. They came over and jumped in and helped us.”

Hight, the No. 2 qualifier, defeated teammate and No. 3 qualifier Force, driver of the PEAK/BlueDEF Platinum Camaro SS, on a holeshot in the semifinals.

Brittany Force, who registered her fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season in the Flav-R-Pac/Monster Energy Chevrolet dragster, lost in the second round and remained second in the Top Fuel standings. Teammate Austin Prock, the No. 7 qualifier in the Montana Brand/Rocky Mountain Twist Chevrolet dragster, also fell in the second round.

Mason McGaha, driving the Harlow Sammons of Odessa Camaro SS, defeated Pro Stock points leader and No. 2 qualifier Erica Enders in the first round. The last time Enders fell in the opening round – to Bo Butner in March at Gainesville – she went on to advance to five consecutive final rounds in the Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Camaro SS. McGaha had an .003 light to score the holeshot victory after Enders outran him 6.951 to 6.965 seconds.

“I’ve never been here before as a driver,” said McGaha, 20. “And I struggled with my lights. I tried to get amped up like I always do, and it worked out.”

Jay Storey of Andover, Kansas, was runner-up in Stock Eliminator in his Chevrolet COPO Camaro.

An interview with Funny Car winner ROBERT HIGHT, driver of the Automobile Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS:

THIS WAS A LONG DAY.

“I love this place. Jimmy (Prock) and I have done a lot of winning here; it’s a fun place. And when you have a crew chief – a tandem of crew chiefs like Jimmy and Chris (Cunningham) – it’s amazing. Last year we came here and it was our worst race ever. We were horrible. But they really worked and thought about it for a year and came back and we just had a great race car all weekend.”

YOU WINNING THE SEMIFINAL ON A HOLESHOT AGAINST THE BOSS. IS THAT GOING TO CAUSE ANY FRICTION?

“No, we’re all good. Chevrolet was bound to be in the final, so you can’t lose at that point. Where you hate to race each other is early on. They have a great race car and they’re going to get their fair share of wins. Right now, things are just clicking for this Auto Club team.”

WHEN MATT HAGAN WENT OUT EARLY, YOU HAD TO CAPITALIZE AND YOU GOT EVERYTHING YOU COULD.

“Today we needed to make hay while the sun is out. It was a big day for us, and it would have been horrible to not take advantage of that. There are going to be a lot of battles. The points chase is going to move back and forth, and it’s a whole new ballgame after Indy when they reset the points. Hopefully, we’re not getting these wins out of the way too early and we still have some at the end when it counts.”

YOU’VE HAD PRETTY GOOD RESULTS AT SONOMA.

“I think we’ve won there the last three years, so we can’t wait to get to Sonoma.”

An interview with Pro Stock winner MATT HARTFORD, driver of the Total Seal Chevrolet Camaro SS:

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME.

“It has been a long time; we kind of stunk up the circuit earlier this year. I won more rounds today than I have all season. That’s the truth on how our season went. But we started to turn it around at Bristol, Norwalk started running better. Unfortunately kept coming up short in the second round. Here we had a fast car.”

THE HEAT OF THE RACETRACK, THE DIFFERENT CONDITIONS AFFECT EVERYONE. HOW DID YOU MANAGE?

“We were runner-up a couple of years ago (2019) here. We had a fast car on race day and it’s all because of my team. We have a great team, we have a great engine supplier. Ken Black makes sure we have as good of power as Greg Anderson. (KB Racing) has as much integrity as anybody I’ve ever met and it shows today with going to the finals.”

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING, YOU WIN ONE RACE A YEAR. WOUYLD YOU LIKE TO BUILD ON THAT?

“That’s a good stat, but our next step is Sonoma. We’re going to go there, back to sea level. Denver closes everything up for Pro Stock, so it’s harder here. When we get to Sonoma, you’re going to see the performance differences from one to 16. If we can go there and qualify well, I think we have a chance. We won Seattle the last time we were there.”

BRITTANY FORCE, JOHN FORCE RACING, FLAV-R-PAC/MONSTER ENERGY CHEVROLET DRAGSTER: “Challenging weekend for our Flav-R-Pac team here at Bandimere Speedway. We struggled Friday qualifying and had some breakage on Sunday in the second round of eliminations. We still kept ourselves up in the points and brought home our fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season. Lucky for us we head straight to Sonoma for number two on this Western Swing.”

AUSTIN PROCK, JOHN FORCE RACING, MONTANA BRANDS/ROCKY MOUNTAIN TWIST CHEVROLET DRAGSTER: “Not the day this Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist team wanted, but we learned. Our car is close and just needs a few small changes and we can be dangerous. I made some progress in my department as well, I felt satisfied with my performance this weekend, which I haven’t in a while. have a good feeling about Sonoma. I’m glad my dad and Hight were able to make the day worth it, especially with NK Seeds and Frank Tiegs in attendance. We will celebrate their win for the John Force Racing team and get it done next weekend.”

Rosenqvist scores season-best third place for Team Chevy
McLaughlin, Newgarden also finish in top 10 on tough day on Toronto circuit

TORONTO (July 17, 2022) — Though disappointed by missing the Firestone Fast Six qualifying session by a scant margin, Felix Rosenqvist said “we can do some damage from P8” in the No. 7 Circle K Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet.

The 30-year-old Swede was prophetic. Rosenqvist drove to a season-best third place to lead the Chevrolet Racing contingent in the Honda Indy Toronto on the 1.786-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit.

Scott McLaughlin, winner of the last NTT INDYCAR SERIES race earlier this month, finished ninth in the No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet and two-time Toronto winner Josef Newgarden drove to 10th place in the No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet.

“What a fun race. Big thanks to all of the Arrow McLaren SP Circle K guys,” said Rosenqvist, whose previous best finish through nine races was fourth in the Indianapolis 500. “I had to fight really hard for it. The strategy for the race is you had to overtake on track and have great pit stops. I think we nailed that.

“We took the opportunities we had and that slowly moved us forward.”

After the front-running Rinus Veekay, driving the No. 21 Bitcoin Racing Team with BitNile Chevrolet, pitted for the final time on Lap 61 of 85, Rosenqvist moved to third behind Scott Dixon and Colton Herta. He challenged for second, getting to .8735 of a second behind Herta’s Honda, but couldn’t overtake on the tight serpentine circuit.

Dixon earned his first victory of the season and fourth at Toronto, which moved the veteran driver into a tie with Mario Andretti with second in the all-time list with 52 wins. A.J. Foyt leads with 67.

Will Power, who was hampered by qualifying 16th in the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, moved up to 12th early on but was behind traffic most of the race and placed 15th. Power remained second in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES standings – 34 points behind Marcus Ericsson.

Chevrolet retained the manufacturer points lead.

Chevrolet teams continue the stretch of five races in four consecutive weekends with the doubleheader on the .875-mile Iowa Speedway trioval. NBC will telecast both races live at 4 p.m. ET July 23 and 3 p.m. ET July 24.

PATO O’WARD, NO. 5 ARROW MCLAREN SP CHEVROLET, FINISHED 11TH:

“Toronto was a weekend to forget for the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP team. I saved as many points as I could. We started near the back and lost a lot of positions on the start so then it was even more work that we had to do to make our way to a decent points finish. We had some good track position in the pit stop sequence and got ourselves near the top 10 — not quite in the top 10 but an 11th finish, which is definitely better than where we started and then where we fell back to, so I can’t complain.”

Felix Rosenqvist transcript:

THIS IS YOUR BEST FINISH OF THE SEASON. YOUR LAST PODIUM WAS IN 2020 AT ROAD AMERICA. TELL US ABOUT YOUR DAY.

“It’s been a good weekend. A good race, as well. I don’t think we’ve been the fastest all weekend, but I just did the basics right. I think we did a good lap in qualify, got us to P8. Then the strategy in the race. Obviously in Toronto it’s hard to pass. The plan was if you have an opportunity, try to pass, nail the pit stops. I think we had an advantageous pit stall this weekend in the left turn, which probably gives you like a second, second and a half compared to some other guys who are in the right turn. All those kind of things together I think allowed us to go forward in the race. We were saving a lot of fuel early on. It looked like we were going to have a big advantage there at the end. That last yellow kind of played into Colton and Scott’s favor. Congrats to Scott, by the way. Good to see him back on the P1. I think it was a fun race. Good, hard battles out there on a good, hard track. Very physical. Very warm. Yeah, no, good fun.”

FELIX, THE INCIDENT WITH ROSSI. COULD YOU WALK US THROUGH SETTING UP THE PASS?

“I had a good run. He looked a bit weak in the braking on three. I did kind of a little surprise move. Was fairly far up by the time we turned in. I kind of thought that he had already given up on the corner. I just saw him, like, hang around the outside. I was like, Okay. I mean, fair play if you want to try to go around outside. At some point you run out of road. I think he probably bumped his wheel or something. That’s kind of what it felt like. He ran into my side pod, probably lost a wheel and hit the wall. I don’t know if it was fair play, to be honest. He normally races hard. I’ve been racing him previously where it’s been to his advantage in that situation and I’ve lost a bunch of spots. Today he lost his race. Obviously, I don’t want to see him in the wall, but it was just a hard pass, hard racing. There wasn’t a penalty, so I think that kind of explains everything.”

FELIX, YOU AND COLTON PITTED ON THE SAME LAP. YOU HAD ALL THE OVERTAKE IN THE WORLD LEFT. WAS THAT BY DESIGN?

“I think the nature of the track, it’s so hard to pass, even if you’re three, four, six times quicker, it’s just really hard to get by. So I was trying to just save fuel, save ‘push to pass’, and then at the end if there was something, that was going to be the time. The last three laps I was just using ‘push to pass’ on every straight pretty much. Yeah, I mean, even then it’s hard to pass. I was, yeah, kind of bummed when the last yellow came because I thought we had a little bit of a fuel advantage. It is what’s. I think we gave it everything. Colton was just a little bit too quick to pass today.”

FELIX, YOU SAID ON TV YOU HOPE YOU GAVE ZAK SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. ARE YOU SORT OF LOCKED INTO THIS WITH MCLAREN OR IS THERE STILL ROOM FOR YOU TO BE IN INDYCAR NEXT YEAR IF NOT WITH MCLAREN?

“That’s entirely a question for Zak. I’ve made my point that I’m very happy with the team. I think it shows, a super group. I think we worked hard the last two years to kind of build up a very strong team. We have good strategy, good pit stops. I think I’m able to extract most out of the car most weekends now. Yeah, I think if you asked me end of last year, obviously it would have been a different answer. But right now I’m just very happy where I’m at. I think I would be crazy if I said I wanted to go somewhere else. You always have to be thankful for every opportunity you have. Sort of like an (indiscernible) in motorsports if it’s here, Europe, Japan, whatever. It’s a few drivers in the world that get to do that. I want to be where I’m at right now. Yeah, I think Arrow McLaren SP has pretty much become a home for me. Yeah, it’s up to Zak. He’s the man who is making the moves. Probably going to take a couple weeks before we know more. Hopefully today changed something. My ambition is to keep proving it that way.”

PERSONALLY, HOW GOOD DOES IT FEEL TO GET THIS PODIUM?

“It was massively overdue. We had so many good races. Even last year when we had such a struggle year, we still had times where we were fighting for wins. Just things end up happening. Mid-Ohio was pretty much a perfect race until we had a technical failure that ended our race. Texas earlier this year. Just so many races. Obviously I don’t like to say what could have happened. I think everyone on the team was ready for at least a podium, and also a win coming up here soon hopefully. Yeah, really, really good. Really good just for the guys on the car to give them something more than P4 or P5.”

WHAT WAS IT LIKE HANDLING TURN 3, ESPECIALLY WITH ALL THE AGGRESSION OUT THERE?

“It’s just a hairpin end of the day. No, it was a good one for me today. I did most of my passing going into three. Yeah, I don’t know what more to say about it. One where Rossi was obviously unfortunate. Hey, racing.”

FELIX, WITH ALL OF THE NEWS SWIRLING ABOUT ALEX, DO YOU HAVE ANY MORE INFORMATION ON YOUR SERIES NEXT SEASON?

” By the sound of it, it doesn’t sound like Alex has — I mean, I don’t know what’s going on there. At the moment it doesn’t sound like he’s going to race at all. Yeah, it’s up to lawyers and stuff.

Honestly it’s not my business at all. I think honestly it hasn’t really changed anything. This whole deal went down months ago. I didn’t know all the details of it that I know now, but nothing has actually changed.

I think if Zak was sure I was going to FE, he would have already said it. I’m going to take that chance. If there’s a chance for me to be here next year, I’m going to try to prove I can do that.

SCOTT’S WIN TODAY TIED HIM WITH MARIO ANDRETTI. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON HIS CAREER?

“Yeah, I mean, we were teammates back in ’19 and 2020. Yeah, no, huge respect. I don’t think I know anyone who’s has competitive as Scott. Joe Gibbs Racing driver bested last year’s runner-up finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, powering his No. 20 Toyota Camry to victory; Chase Elliott finished second.

LOUDON, N.H. – Perhaps the only thing that could stop Christopher Bell from winning Sunday’s Ambetter 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) was Loudon the Lobster in victory lane. At the end of the day, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver overcame not only his anxiety over the clawed crustacean, but also some stiff competition on the track to power his Toyota Camry TRD to the first oval win of his young career.

After a dominant early performance by teammate Martin Truex Jr., who led a race-high 172 laps and swept the first two stages, Bell paced the field for the final 42 circuits en route to the win.

“Winning Cup races is hard,” Bell admitted following the race. “It just seems like we’ve been so close. Earlier in the year I felt like we were right on the cusp of winning, but the last few weeks we haven’t been close. Now here we are… That one was much-needed.”

When the checkered flag flew, Bell beat runner-up Chase Elliott to the line by 5.676 seconds.

With a third-place run, 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace turned in his best performance of the season since finishing second at the Daytona 500.

“It didn’t handle that great, but it had speed,” Wallace said of his No. 23 Toyota Camry TRD. “I’m glad it came out the way it did. This sport humbles you, so there are no surprises. You just have to stick true to your path.”

Truex finished fourth, with Kevin Harvick rounding out the top five.

With the win, Bell continued his hot streak at NHMS, where he finished second last season and has earned three wins in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The 27-year-old Oklahoma native also likely cemented his spot in the NASCAR Playoffs. The 14th different winner through 20 races is the most at NASCAR’s premier level since 2011.

Race Rundown: Austin Cindric and the No. 2 Autotrader Ford Mustang team overcame a pit road mishap to record a 13th-place finish in Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Cindric started 28th and remained relatively quiet on the radio early in the 301-lap race while he steadily moved forward to finish 19th in Stage 1. As multiple cautions slowed the field in Stage 2, Cindric continued to gain ground while steering a Mustang that was handling tight in traffic. The 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion improved to 13th by the conclusion of Stage 2. Following a four-tire stop during the stage break, Cindric’s car lost its left-front wheel after exiting the pit stall. Cindric had to reverse his path down pit road for the No. 2 crew to correct the issue. Despite the lost track position, Cindric and the Autotrader team remained resilient over a calm Stage 3 to produce a 13th-place finish in Loudon.

Cindric’s Thoughts: “Definitely a double come from behind day on the 2 car. Drove my guts out today. I am proud of the adjustments we made overnight after such a bad qualifying effort. Had a probably top-five long run car and should have finished in the top-10, we just ran out of time there. I had fun working the lanes and trying to get better. I am proud of the team. We will keep moving forward.”

No. 12 Menards/Libman Ford Mustang – Ryan Blaney

Race Rundown: Ryan Blaney started 11th and finished 18th in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The driver of Menards/Libman Ford Mustang tried to overcome an ill-handling car and a mid-race spin on Sunday. Blaney and the No. 12 Ford team spent a good portion of the race working to overcome a tight-handling condition on the Menards/Libman Mustang. After making significant adjustments to the No. 12 Ford, Blaney spun on Lap 147. The Menards/Libman crew made repairs to the Ford Mustang and Blaney fought back to bring home an 18th-place finish.

Blaney’s Thoughts: “It was a rough day for our Menards/Libman Ford. We struggled with the balance and spun midway in the race. Certainly, wasn’t the result we wanted but we’ll look toward Pocono next week.”

Race Rundown: Joey Logano started 12th and finished 24th in Sunday’s Ambetter 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The driver of the Shell-Pennzoil Ford fought to overcome a tight-handling condition on the No. 22 early in the race. He finished Stage 1 in the 11th position. Crew chief Paul Wolfe opted for track position as he called for the Shell-Pennzoil Ford to remain on track during the caution period between stages. Logano ran up front and finished Stage 2 in fourth place. Over the course of the final stage, Logano continued to run among the leaders and looked to be in position to secure a top-five finish. Unfortunately, the team’s fuel strategy didn’t pay off as Logano came to pit road for service with less than 10 laps remaining. As a result of losing track position, Logano came home in the 24th position.

Logano’s Thoughts: “Yeah, live by the sword, die by the sword. We did it in the second stage to get track position and it worked. Then we did it again to get track position and the race ran long and it didn’t work. I thought we were pretty decent once we got up there and had a shot at taking the lead from Kurt (Busch) but then the 9 missed the mark by a mile and knocked our toe our or camber or something in the left rear suspension. I don’t know why he had to do that, but I am pretty sure that was not a good move on his part. So, that is that.”
