NASCAR at World Wide Technology Raceway Weekend Schedule

The NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series (NOAPS) head to World Wide Technology Raceway (WWTR) this weekend. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series kicks off the weekend with the Nu Way 225 Powered by Bobcat and Sauced by Blues Hog on Saturday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. ET on the CW Network. Then on Sunday, the Cup Series Enjoy Illinois 300 begins at 3:00 p.m. ET on the USA Network.

Hall of Fame baseball manager Tony La Russa has been named Grand Marshal for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Enjoy Illinois 300 race. La Russa will participate in pre-race ceremonies and will also be joined by his longtime friend and special guest, CAPT Jim “Guido” DiMatteo, USN (Ret.), to deliver the most famous words in motorsports: the command for drivers to start their engines.

Cup Series Notes for World Wide Technology Raceway:

This will be the fifth Cup race at St. Louis, and the second time it’s hosted a Chase race. The race winner took the lead with two laps to go in two of the four races, and two of the four ended in overtime. The race stages are 45/140/240 Laps = 300 miles.

Joey Logano finished top-five in all four races and is the only driver with top-10 finishes in all four races. Denny Hamlin has finished top-2 in each of the last three races, including a win last season.

After Darlington, Christopher Bell and Bubba Wallace gained the most spots (+4) in the Chase standings, and William Byron lost the most (-3). Nine Chase drivers finished in the top-10, including a sweep of the top-six, and 11 Chase drivers scored stage points. Five of the top six in the Chase standings are Toyota drivers.

NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series Notes for World Wide Technology Raceway:

Justin Allgaier lost 18 points off of his 25-point lead and now leads Sheldon Creed by just seven points. Allgaier’s seven-point lead over second is his smallest lead since race number 4 at Phoenix, with eight races remaining in the Chase.

St. Louis is the second race of the 2026 Chase, and the 17th NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway since the inaugural race in 1997, and it’s the second O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race since the series returned in 2025.

Only three drivers in the field have led laps: Justin Allgaier ( 116 ), William Sawalich (7), and Jeremy Clements (6). Allgaier is the only driver in the field to win a stage and is the only driver in the field to win a pole.

Three of 16 races featured a pass for the win in the final two laps; there has never been an overtime finish in 16 previous races, and the driver to lead the most laps went on to win eight of 16 races.

RCR Race Preview: World Wide Technology Raceway

Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series at World Wide Technology Raceway… This weekend marks the fifth time that the NASCAR Cup Series has competed at the 1.25-mile paved oval located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri in Madison, Illinois. Richard Childress Racing has already built solid stats at the intermediate-style track, highlighted by Kyle Busch’s final win in 2023. The late two-time Cup Series champion qualified on the pole, led a race-high 121 laps en route to his 63rd and final career Cup Series victory. In addition to Busch’s win and pole, RCR has earned two top-10 finishes in eight Series starts.

Richard Childress Racing in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at World Wide Technology Raceway… The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series heads back to World Wide Technology Raceway this weekend for the second year in a row after previously running there from 1997-2010. While the track is new to recent memory, RCR has a proven track record of success at WWTR, acquiring two wins, seven top-five finishes and 12 top-10 finishes over the course of 22 starts from 2000-2025. RCR’s first win at the Madison, Illinois-based track came in the organization’s first start there in 2000 with driver Kevin Harvick. Harvick backed up the performance with a second O’Reilly Auto Parts Series win for RCR at the track in 2001. Last year at WWTR, Jesse Love finished fifth and Austin Hill finished 12th.

Honoring Our Nation’s Finest… This past Wednesday, in conjunction with Veterans Bridge Home, RCR hosted a special edition of their monthly Veterans Coffee, honoring and recognizing our nation’s courageous first responders ahead of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. A monthly gathering, the Veterans Coffee events invite veterans from the community to RCR’s campus for fellowship, coffee, and programing that includes guest speakers and access to organizations and resources that can help veterans and their families. This month, those in attendance were also provided access to complimentary tickets to the Carolina Cowboys’ homestand in recognition of their service.

Veterans Coffee events are free to attend and open to all veterans. Next month’s event will be held at RCR on October 14th. Media are invited to join RCR for our next Veterans Coffee at the RCR Events Center in Welcome, North Carolina.

Congratulations, Richard Childress… Beyond his role as a NASCAR Hall of Fame team owner, entrepreneur and innovator, Richard Childress is a strong supporter of U.S. Military veterans and has earned a reputation as one of the most patriotic team owners in the garage. His life-long commitment to our country was recently recognized by Senator Thom Tillis, who entered a Congressional Record speech honoring Childress for his service to veterans and the community. Regional Representative Mike Fenley presented this award to Childress during a recent Veterans Coffee event hosted on RCR’s campus in Welcome, North Carolina.

A Bucking Good Time… Outside of the racetrack, Richard Childress Racing has competitive roots in another sport – bull riding. Richard Childress, alongside Jeff and Tammie Broin, co-own the Carolina Cowboys, the reigning World Champions in the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Teams league, while Austin Dillon serves as the team’s General Manager. The Cowboys boast a talented roster with several high-profile and talented bull riders that Dillon hand selected for the team, including 2018 PBR Rookie of the Year and 2025 Challenger Series Champion Keyshawn Whitehorse, and two-time PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood. Beyond the Cup Series… Dillon, the 2011 NASCAR Truck Series Champion, has one Truck Series start at World Wide Technology Raceway, finishing sixth after starting seventh in 2010.

What is your outlook ahead of this weekend’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway?

“I’m looking forward to getting to Gateway with the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/Winchester Deer Season XP Chevrolet. Winchester has a plant right up the road from the track, and two years ago we had a really good run. This past season when we were in the Playoffs we kind of missed it, so hopefully we go back to our old setup, and see what we can learn from it. It’s a faster, flatter track. Anytime you can get out front there it is good. Pit road is intense, so we’ll be working hard in the sim to dial in our setup before we get there.”

Do you consider World Wide Technology Raceway more of a short track or an intermediate?

“I feel like it is an in between. It’s more short track to me because you have brake pedal, you’re using it a little bit. You choose different angles. So, I feel like it is a short track overall.”

Austin Hill and the No. 33 Lucas Oil Chevrolet at World Wide Technology Raceway… Austin Hill will make his first NASCAR Cup Series start at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday. Despite the lack of experience behind the wheel of a Cup Series entry at the 1.25-mile oval, Hill has competed in six career races at the Madison, Illinois facility across both the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts and NASCAR Truck Series. Hill’s best result of third came in the Truck Series (2020).

What are the expectations heading into your first Cup Series start at World Wide Technology Raceway?

“The package that we will run this weekend in the Cup car is different than what the series ran there in the past. It’s the 750 horsepower package, which is the same as Richmond and Darlington. No one really knows how that will affect the racing product. One of the questions we have is around shifting and whether you will shift down to third or stay in fourth. We expect that to be a factor in tire wear and how your overall balance is of our Lucas Oil Chevrolet. This will be another thing that is completely different than the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series side.”

Describe the track characteristics and the important areas of World Wide Technology Raceway.

”Turns 1 and 2 are totally different than Turns 3 and 4. Turns 1 and 2 are super tight and you need to be able to get into the corner really deep and carry good roll speed across the middle. If there was one area that you can give up in, it would be the exit. Getting into the corner and to the center are the most important in my opinion.”

Jesse Love and the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet at World Wide Technology Raceway… This weekend will mark Jesse Love’s second career O’Reilly Auto Parts Series start at World Wide Technology Raceway. Last year, Love quailed 18th and made his way into the top-10 by the end of Stage 1 finishing eighth and fifth in Stage 2 where the 21-year-old would ultimately finish. Furthermore, the Menlo Park, California-native made his Truck Series debut at the track in 2023, qualifying 20th en route to a ninth-place finish. Prior to that race, Love raced in the ARCA Menards Series event at the Illinois track in 2020, starting from the 17th position and finishing in fifth-place.

Chase Update… This weekend’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway marks the second race in The Chase. Love will travel to the Missouri track sixth in the standings, 48 points behind leader Justin Allgaier. Love began the chase with a 13th place-finish at Darlington Raceway, earning 27 points.

More Smooth Sailing for IR-28 Car in IMS Oval Test With Palou

INDIANAPOLIS (Thursday, Sept. 10, 2026) – Alex Palou completed the second day of INDYCAR’s IR-28 oval validation test Thursday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, giving engineers another valuable set of data and driver feedback as development continues on the next-generation NTT INDYCAR SERIES car.

The test went so well that Palou ended his running 15 minutes early after the team completed every item on its checklist.

“Very fun,” Palou said. “At the beginning, it was super fun because it’s a new car and you’re back at the Speedway. Then you’re like, ‘Can we go faster?’

“It’s still super fun. I’m testing the new car at the Speedway.”

Five-time NTT INDYCAR SERIES champion and 2025 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Palou was the second driver to experience the IR-28’s oval configuration, following Wednesday’s testing by Alexander Rossi.

Palou and Rossi shared driving duties during the car’s track debut last month on the IMS road course. That three-day test was extended by rain. Rossi, driving for ECR, provided feedback representing Chevrolet teams, while Palou represented Honda teams for Chip Ganassi Racing. Both returned to IMS for the oval validation test.

Rossi completed his testing Wednesday in temperatures that climbed into the low 90s with high humidity. An approaching cold front dropped temperatures nearly 10 degrees Thursday, giving INDYCAR engineers another set of environmental conditions to evaluate the car.

The focus remained on data collection rather than outright speed, despite Palou and Rossi qualifying first and second, respectively, for this year’s Indianapolis 500.

Single-car running allowed engineers to evaluate the IR-28 through a variety of aerodynamic configurations while gathering driver feedback on how the car responds to the demands of oval racing.

Rossi had a separate plan Wednesday than Palou’s checklist Thursday.

The goal of the test was to understand the car’s behavior across different aerodynamic setups and ride heights while identifying opportunities to improve its performance and raceability.

“I don’t really know what he did,” Palou said of Rossi. “I think he did a lot of basic stuff. Even us, we did a lot of basic stuff and trying to get a lot of data for Dallara itself to try and see what the car is doing when we get like crazy ride heights up, down, like just trying to get like basic numbers.”

Considerable development work remains before the IR-28 makes its NTT INDYCAR SERIES race debut in 2028. The two days of oval running at IMS provided another important step in that process, adding data from a variety of aerodynamic configurations and feedback from two Indy 500 winners.

Palou and Rossi now have their first oval impressions of the car that will define the next generation of INDYCAR SERIES racing.

“We got a lot more laps than I expected with the weather, and the car felt good,” Palou said. “We actually got quite a lot of speed. We improved over 2 miles an hour throughout the day, and we didn’t really work too much to get it.”

Corey Day inks long-term extension with Hendrick Motorsports; set for limited Cup starts in 2027

Corey Day has inked a long-term contract extension with Hendrick Motorsports.

As part of the long-term extension, the 20-year-old Day from Clovis, California, will return for a second consecutive full-time campaign in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series division in the No. 17 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet Camaro entry in 2027. He will also campaign in his first-ever set of Cup Series events on a limited basis, with details of his ride and selected events remaining to be determined.

The news comes as Day is currently campaigning in his first full-time season in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series division with Hendrick Motorsports. As one of 12 competitors who made this year’s series’ Chase, he is currently ranked in fifth place in the standings and is 46 points behind points leader Justin Allgaier as he is also coming off a runner-up result during this past weekend’s Chase opener at Darlington Raceway.

“When I joined Hendrick Motorsports, I knew I had a lot to learn. And I still do,” Day said. “But the people here have really embraced me and invested a lot of time in helping me grow, both as a driver and a person. Mr. and Mrs. Hendrick give us all the resources we could possibly need. I’m so grateful to them, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Andrews and the 500 teammates who put so much into our success. Day is an accomplished racer with a championship title in the King of the West Sprint Car Series in 2023, back-to-back Trophy Cup championships at Tulare Speedway in 2023 and 2024, and three consecutive Gold Cup Sprint Car championships between 2023 and 2025. He is also the youngest competitor to win a USAC National Midget Series event, a feat he accomplished at Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis in 2021 at age 15 years, six months and 12 days old.

Day, who first signed a multi-year contract with Hendrick Motorsports on December 6, 2024, made his first 11 career starts with Hendrick in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series division in 2025, during which he achieved a season-best fourth-place run at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in mid-October. On November 7, 2025, he was announced as a full-time O’Reilly competitor in Hendrick’s No. 17 entry for the 2026 season. 

Through 25-scheduled starts this season, Day notched his first two career victories: Talladega Superspeedway in mid-April and Dover Motor Speedway in mid-May. He also earned his first career pole at Rockingham Speedway in early April, seven top-five results, 16 top-10 results, 196 laps led and an average-finishing result of 13.4.

Through a total of 36 starts in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Day has achieved a pair of victories, a single pole, eight top-five results, 18 top-10 results, 196 laps led and an average-finishing result of 14.2 as he continues his pursuit for additional race victories and his first championship. He has also made 14 starts in the Craftsman Truck Series and six in the ARCA Menards Series, to date.

Veteran Driver Set to Return in No. 5 Tundra for Two Events
