Notes of Interest

● It’s time to tackle the unpredictability of superspeedway racing once again for Cole Custer and the No. 41 Autodesk Fusion 360/HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) as the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway for Sunday’s YellaWood 500.
● Back with Custer and the No. 41 SHR Ford team for the season’s fifth of six appearances as primary partner is Autodesk Fusion 360, which kicked off its fourth season with the 23-year-old driver and SHR in June on the Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway road course and made its fourth appearance two weekends ago on the high-banked, half-mile concrete oval at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. The Sonoma weekend was a hometown race for San Francisco-based Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK), a leader in software applications for the engineering, manufacturing, construction, architecture, media and entertainment industries.
● Sunday’s 500-mile race at Talladega will be Custer’s milestone 70th Cup Series start and his fourth on the 2.66-mile oval. The reigning Cup Series Rookie of the Year’s 10th-place finish there in April was the best of his first three Cup Series visits and was the first of his two top-10 finishes earned so far this season. He scored his second top-10 three weeks later on the concrete mile oval at Dover (Del.) International Speedway.
● The 23-year-old from Ladera Ranch, California, had promising runs in both of last year’s Cup Series events at Talladega. In the spring race, he was set to restart fifth for the green-white-checkered finish, but his Mustang began to stumble from a lack of fuel, sending him to pit road for a splash-and-go. He finished 22nd. In the fall race, he was able to drive to the front on multiple occasions, but while running fifth just past the race’s halfway point, he was collected in a multicar incident that ended his day.
● Custer has three Talladega appearances in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition in the No. 00 SHR Ford with a best finish of ninth in the 2018 race, and best starts of 12th in the 2018 and 2019 races.
● Custer qualified the No. 00 JR Motorsports entry on the pole for the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Talladega, but saw that bid come to an early end after an accident just past the halfway point.
● After last Sunday’s night’s 29th-place finish on the 1.5-mile Las Vegas Motor Speedway oval, Custer arrives at Talladega 28th in the driver standings.
● Joining Autodesk on the No. 41 Ford Mustang is team co-owner Gene Haas’ newest holding, Haas Tooling, which was launched as a way for CNC machinists to purchase high-quality cutting tools at great prices. Haas cutting tools are sold exclusively online at HaasTooling.com and shipped directly to end users. HaasTooling.com products became available nationally last July, and the cutting tools available for purchase at HaasTooling.com have proven to be even more important during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic as CNC machines have become vital to producing personal protective equipment. Haas Automation, founded by Haas in 1983, is America’s leading builder of CNC machine tools. The company manufactures a complete line of vertical and horizontal machining centers, turning centers and rotary tables and indexers. All Haas products are constructed in the company’s 1.1-million-square-foot manufacturing facility in Oxnard, California, and distributed through a worldwide network of Haas Factory Outlets.
● SHR, its partner Wow Wow Classic Waffles, and Feeding America®, the largest hunger relief organization in the United States with a network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs, are asking fans to do their part in helping to end hunger in America by texting HUNGER to 50555 to make a $5 donation to Feeding America, by visiting the Feeding America donation page on Facebook, or the donation page via the Feeding America website. Each $1 donated helps provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America® on behalf of local member food banks.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 41 Autodesk Fusion 360/HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing

You drove to a top-10 finish in your last visit to Talladega in April and you finished just one spot out of the top-10 in the Daytona 500 at Talladega’s sister track in February. Do you feel you can carry that momentum into this weekend?

“Those were solid races that we needed at the time, and I think if a thing or two would’ve gone our way at the end of those races, we would’ve ended up with even better finishes. The superspeedways have been one of our strong suits at SHR this year and I’m confident our HaasTooling.com Ford guys are bringing us a fast Mustang for this race. These are races where you can’t control a whole lot and you have to hope for the best, especially during the playoffs when guys are going all out for stage points and then at the end of the race. You have to race your race the best you can to put yourself in a good position. It can be a pretty stressful race, but I guess all of the races can be stressful if you let them.”

Your first two Cup Series races at Talladega were potentially strong runs during your Rookie of the Year campaign in 2020. Talk about that and how you seemed to get comfortable there from the get-go.

“We had strong runs and we did it without any practice or qualifying, so that was definitely an adventure. Having no practice was definitely a concern because you want as much practice as you can get to just feel things out and see what’s working and what’s not working. But we figured it out pretty quickly in the race, as it turned out. We had fast Ford Mustangs both times there last year. I think we had top-five cars at both races, and we were able to race our way to the front both times. But we ran out of fuel at the end of the June race, and ended up getting caught up in a big wreck a little past halfway in the October race. I’m optimistic we’ll bring a fast HaasTooling.com Mustang again this weekend.”

Notes of Interest

● Chase Briscoe and the No. 14 Ford Mustang team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) gear up for the final superspeedway race of the season at 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. In Briscoe’s first NASCAR Cup Series start at Talladega, he led his first lap in Cup Series competition and finished the 188-lap race in the 11th position – his best finish over the first 10 events of the season. He’s now earned nine top-15 finishes since that first trip, the most recent at 14th-place result coming last weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
● The No. 14 will carry the colors of Rush Truck Centers and Mobil Delvac 1. Briscoe’s Ford Mustang and all of the SHR cars travel from race to race in haulers from Rush Truck Centers, the premier service solutions provider to the commercial vehicle industry. And those haulers are supported by RushCare, which helps customers find the nearest Rush Truck Centers location, provides service concierge and technical support, schedules mobile service, dispatches roadside assistance and more. Rush Truck Centers is the largest network of commercial vehicle dealerships in the United States with more than 100 locations, and takes pride in its integrated approach to customer needs – from vehicle sales to aftermarket parts, service and body shop operations, plus financing, insurance, leasing and rental, as well as alternate fuel systems and other vehicle technologies. Mobil Delvac 1 heavy-duty diesel engine oils are designed to help commercial fleets save money and boost uptime through fuel economy savings, extending the life of engines, and lengthening oil drain intervals. In 2020, the SHR haulers moved from three oil changes per season to a single oil change by using Mobil Delvac 1 diesel engine oil.
● Briscoe has made four Xfinity Series starts at Talladega with a best finish of fourth in 2019. He also has one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start there in 2017, when he finished 22nd, and one ARCA Menards Series start in 2016, when he finished third. Briscoe completed all 454 laps available in his six career starts at the superspeedway.
● The 14th-place finish at Las Vegas extended Briscoe’s lead in the NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year standings to 268 points with just six races remaining. He has been the highest-finishing rookie driver in 26 of 30 events. With Rookie of the Year honors in the Truck Series (2017) and Xfinity Series (2019), Briscoe is looking to join Erik Jones and William Byron as only the third driver in history to claim the title in all three of NASCAR’s national touring series.

Chase Briscoe, Driver of the No. 14 Rush Truck Centers/Mobil Delvac 1 Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

Your first race at Talladega in April was really the first top-15 for the No. 14 team. How are you feeling about heading back there with a little more experience under your belt?

“I’m excited, and I don’t think that’s something you hear a lot when people talk about superspeedways. I love this type of racing and, now that I am more comfortable in the car and with the team and how they work, I think we’ve got a good shot to go finish up front. We’ve made progress at every other track this year and I think we can do the same. But there’s always that unknown factor at these superspeedway races. Anything can happen and it will. You’ve got guys who are trying to make the next round of the playoffs before we get to the Roval and others that are just going for a win knowing these are the kinds of races where you can go from midpack to the front if you can find the right line and drafting group.”

Toyota Racing – NCS Talladega Quotes – Martin Truex Jr. – 09.28.21

Toyota Racing – Martin Truex Jr.
NASCAR Cup Series Quotes

TALLADEGA, Ala. (September 28, 2021) – Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. was made available to media prior to the Talladega race weekend today:

MARTIN TRUEX JR., No. 19 Bass Pro Shops Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

When drafting in Talladega, do you consider who is in the Playoffs and who is not?

“That’s a good question. I don’t know. I think honestly at the end of the day, you hope you are running at the finish and you are going to do whatever is best for you, so I don’t know if you are going to make a move necessarily on who’s around you if they are in the Playoffs or not, you are going to do whatever is in your best interest to get you the best result you can get.”

How does the ROVAL compared to other road courses built in the infield of racetracks?

“I think the biggest challenge with the ROVAL is that you have to somewhat setup your car to run on the oval, especially turns three and four of the oval. It kind of keeps you from setting up the car the way you want to for the infield, so it just makes it a big challenge. That’s the biggest thing. It always seems like the infield there is pretty bumpy. It’s pretty narrow. There is a lot of undulations up and down. The car’s never in the racetrack very good because the tires are hard for the oval. It’s just a big compromise. I think that’s the biggest thing. Really hard to get your car working right and it’s a real challenge to get around there.”

What is your relationship with Talladega?

“It’s not been very good lately. We’ve kind of been in bad relationship these last couple of years. I don’t know. I enjoy going there. I enjoy racing there. It just been a real challenge to get to the finish, so hopefully, this time around we will have a little bit better luck. Just been caught up in a lot of accidents. Nowhere to hide there. It’s just not been that good to us. We haven’t finished a speedway race this year, so I guess the odds are in our favor to finish this one, hopefully. We need it. We need a good finish, so hopefully we will get it done.”

Does your calm demeanor help you at Talladega and in the Playoffs?

“I think it has definitely benefitted me over the years to kind of stay out of trouble and just focus on my own deal and focus with our team together. There’s a lot of things to think about and worry about that you don’t need to really get caught up in everybody’s business, so I guess, yeah, I think we’ve done a pretty good job at that. Just doing our own deal, and not paying attention to others. At the end of the day, the Playoffs are tough, and we have a strong team, so hopefully, we can continue to get strong finishes and so far, we have been really consistent in the Playoffs, and hopefully we can continue that. Talladega is certainly a big question mark, but I think if we can come out of there with a solid day, we will be in pretty good shape heading to the ROVAL.”

What did you learn from the new package at Daytona that you can use at Talladega?

“Really the only difference was the runs weren’t quite as dramatic. The closing rate wasn’t quite as dramatic as it has been in the past. Speeds are down just slightly, and I think that all your moves are just a little more critical. It’s a little bit more difficult to get runs, and a little more difficult to finish runs. We will see what we have. I felt pretty good about our car at Daytona speed wise. I thought we had good speed. We were in pretty good shape until we got caught up. It’s not really that drastically different than we were before.”

Is all of the inspection failures part of strategy or luck of the draw?

“Definitely luck of the draw. We definitely don’t ever plan on those things happening. It’s just one of those things that happens. The other day I talked to James (Small, crew chief) and he said they were all clear through the first time and they were letting the car down and something popped through on the scan about the spoiler, so they went around to fix that and then the right rear tow was off by just the slightest margin. Just kind of luck of the draw, sometimes it just works out that way. It seems like if you have an issue the first time through, you have a second issue the second time through. We definitely don’t plan on that happening. Your number just pops up sometimes.”

What is your confidence level going into Talladega?

“I wouldn’t say I’m 100% confident that we will go there and finish the race. I think if you say that, you are guessing, but I’m confident in our team and what we can do. Been able to win there in Xfinity, not in Cup obviously, so hopefully we can get our first win. We go to the racetrack to win. It doesn’t matter what the track is. I think that is just the way it is. I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully, we can have a good run.”

If you could change the Playoff schedule, would you remove Talladega?

“There’s no chance that I’ll ever get to make the schedule or say where we will go, so it’s not really worth talking about but I don’t know. It is what it is. It’s on the schedule. We are going there this weekend and we’ve got to do a good job.”

What are you doing right in the Playoffs so far?

“Executing. We’ve been consistent. We’ve had fast racecars, so everything really. At the end of the day, it’s all about where you finish. We’ve had some good runs. Winning Richmond was good. Pit crew has been on it, so just overall, we’ve been well-rounded, and we’ve had good speed so hopefully, we can continue to do that.”

What has led to the turnaround in the results?

“I think that it’s just good planning, good execution. We all understand when the Playoffs start you’ve got to put all of your best stuff together. I think that’s just what James (Small, crew chief) and the guys were able to do. We learned a lot throughout the summer – things we were good at and things we needed to work on. Overall, we felt like we had good racecars, good speed. We just weren’t doing all of the little things right. You can’t speed on pit road and do things like that. Just try to clean everything up and be consistent is what we’ve been able to do.”

With your points advantage, how do you balance going for stage points while not getting in an accident?

“That’s the difficult thing. You never really know where the right place to be. A lot of it depends on how the race goes. We sit pit strategies come into play so much now at the speedways with the manufacturers getting together, pitting together and trying to get off sequence and kind of get in a line by themselves. A lot of it is just going to be how strategy works out. Hopefully, we have enough speed that we can stay up towards the front of the pack. That’s the safest place to be usually. We will see if we can do that and work together with our Toyota teammates. One of the biggest challenges for us has been lack of numbers. We have the least amount of cars of all of the manufacturers. Sometimes it makes it tough, but sometimes it’s an advantage. We just have to see how it all plays out and just make the right decisions and stay near the front if we can do it.”

How much does your prep with your spotter change for this race?

“The communication with the spotter is definitely the most important at the speedways. 550 tracks have kind of migrated that way as well, but still not as important as Talladega and Daytona. Talladega is always a challenge because it’s typically always three-wide and sometimes four, so there is just a lot of information that your spotter is giving you to just give you the best picture of what is going on around you because you can’t see. You can only see maybe one or two cars behind you, so it’s hard to know what’s going on without those guys telling you.”

GMS Racing NCWTS Talladega Superspeedway Preview

Sheldon Creed, No. 2 LiftKits4Less Chevrolet Silverado

Talladega Superspeedway Stats

  • NCWTS Starts: 2, Poles: 1 (2020), Top 10s: 1, Best finish: 9th (2019)
  • ARCA Starts: 2, Top 5s: 1, Top 10s: 1, Best start: 3rd, Best finish: 4th (2018)

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

  • Starts: 19, Wins: 3 (Darlington I, II, & Gateway), Top 5s: 8, Top 10s: 9, Poles: 2 (Darlington II, Bristol II), Stage wins: 6, Laps led: 596
  • Sponsor spotlight: LiftKits4Less returns this week to feature on Sheldon Creed’s No. 2 Silverado. However, Creed won’t be racing in the familiar orange and blue colors, as the team will switch to pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Riding along with Sheldon will be ribbons with names of breast cancer survivors who are related to GMS Racing employees and crew members.
  • Chassis history/info: Creed and the No. 2 team will utilize chassis no. 53 at Talladega Superspeedway. This chassis is an absolute bullet, with a track record of three poles and two wins on superspeedway tracks. Kaz Grala took this Silverado to victory lane at Daytona in 2017, and Timothy Peters emerged victorious with it at Talladega in 2018. Most recently, Creed took it to Daytona in February, where it finished 6th, and he also used it to compete at Talladega last season, where it finished 12th.
  • Back2Back: Sheldon Creed and the No. 2 GMS Racing team have some ground to make up after a catastrophic crash last time out in Las Vegas. Entering Talladega, the reigning NCWTS champion is in need of five points to break back into the Playoffs picture. With two races left to run until the next cutoff race, this feat is more than doable, but the crew isn’t taking anything for granted just yet.
  • Quote: “I think we have a good opportunity to overcome last weekend’s mistakes at Talladega. Statistically, I’m not that great of a superspeedway racer, but I always enjoy racing on these types of tracks. I think that in order to be competitive on Saturday we need to race aggressive from the start, but we can’t afford to get ourselves in trouble. If we can walk away with some solid stage points and a good finish, I’ll be a pretty happy guy as we look forward to inching our way closer to Phoenix.”

Zane Smith, No. 21 Hamsters USA Chevrolet Silverado

Talladega Superspeedway Stats

  • NCWTS Starts: 1, Best start: 3rd, Best finish: 33rd (2020)
  • ARCA Starts: 1, Wins: 1 (2018), Top 5s: 1, Top 10s: 1, Best start: 8th

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

  • Starts: 19, Top 5s: 1, Top 10s: 12, Stage wins: 3, Best start: 2nd, Best finish: 4th (Nashville), Laps led: 66
  • Sponsor spotlight: Hamsters USA joins Zane Smith and the No. 21 GMS Racing Chevrolet this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway. Hamsters USA is an international motorcycle club charity group that has raised over $3.5 million to help kids receive occupational, physical, speech and behavior therapy they need to thrive. Riding along with Zane will be ribbons with names of breast cancer survivors who are related to GMS Racing employees and crew members in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  • Chassis history/info: Smith and the No. 21 team will utilize chassis no. 134 in Sweet Home Alabama this weekend. Zane has been the only driver to compete with this chassis, and he has used it in all three of his previous superspeedway races dating back to Daytona in 2020. This Silverado is tough, as it was nearly destroyed in a heavy crash last year at Talladega, but the crew has rebuilt it for battle once again.
  • 21in21: Zane Smith, similarly to teammate Sheldon Creed, needs to make up as many points as possible over the next two races in order to compete for a championship at Phoenix. A blown tire resulting from contact last weekend in Las Vegas devastated Smith’s points total, but the 22-year-old is only nineteen points below the cutline. A breakthrough win at ‘Dega could turn his season completely around, and don’t be surprised if it happens, as Smith has visited victory lane here with the ARCA Menards Series.
  • Quote: “I’m really looking forward to getting down to Talladega this weekend. I’ve won there before, but there are so many unknowns going into the race, so it will definitely be a tough one. I’m happy to have Hamsters USA riding with us, and it’s great to see that there will be a lot of money donated to charity for this race. Hopefully, we are going to stay out of the big one by staying up front all race and end up above that cutline. We’re going to work with our teammates to score stage points and be around at the end.”

Chase Purdy, No. 23 Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado

Talladega Superspeedway Stats

  • NCWTS Starts: 1, Best start: 18th, Best finish: 32nd (2020)
  • ARCA Starts: 1, Best start: 2nd, Best finish: 25th (2018)

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

  • Starts: 18, Top 10s: 1, Best start: 4th, Best finish: 6th (Gateway), Laps led: 4
  • Sponsor spotlight: Bama Buggies returns this week to feature on Chase Purdy’s No. 23 Silverado. Riding along with Chase will be ribbons with names of breast cancer survivors who are related to GMS Racing employees and crew members in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  • Chassis history/info: Purdy and the No. 23 team will utilize chassis no. 129 at the fastest track on the schedule. This Chevy has been in the GMS Racing rotation since 2017 and has three Top 10 finishes on the stat sheet, including a win at Daytona in 2018 with Johnny Sauter behind the wheel. It was ran earlier this season at Daytona, where Purdy finished 29th after electrical gremlins forced an early exit. - Sweet Home Mississippi: Talladega Superspeedway is Chase Purdy’s home track, as the rookie grew up in nearby Meridian, MS. The Ole’ Miss student spent a lot of his life in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and considers Talladega to be his favorite track by far on the schedule. If Purdy is able to pull off a win at the 2.66-mile superspeedway, you better believe there is going to be one huge party in “T-Town”. - Quote: “Home race for me this weekend! The name of the game here is survival. We are going to do our best to be there at the end and keep our nose clean through all the chaos. These races are unpredictable and you never know what can happen, so I’m excited for the challenge.”

Jack Wood, No. 24 Azalea Gynecology Chevrolet Silverado

Talladega Superspeedway Stats

  • ARCA Starts: 1, Best start: 12th, Best finish: 11th (2021)

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

  • Starts: 9, Top 10s: 1, Best start: 2nd, Best finish: 10th (Gateway), Laps led: 1
  • Sponsor spotlight: Azalea Gynecology joins Jack Wood at Talladega Superspeedway for a one race deal on the No. 24 Silverado. Based in Wilmington, NC, Azalea Gynecology is raising awareness for breast cancer research with a special pink paint scheme. Riding along with Jack will be ribbons with names of breast cancer survivors who are related to GMS Racing employees and crew members.
  • Chassis history/info: Wood and his No. 24 team will utilize chassis no. 127 at Talladega, a chassis that has finished in the Top 5 three times. This Chevrolet has two second place finishes on its resume, once with Spencer Gallagher at Talladega in 2016, and once with Justin Haley at Daytona in 2018. Most recently, Raphael Lessard raced with it at Daytona to open up the 2021 season.
  • Plate Track Rookie: Saturday’s Chevrolet Silverado 250 will be Jack Wood’s first race at a superspeedway with a truck, but the rookie has two ARCA races under his belt from earlier this season, in which he finished ninth at Daytona and eleventh at Talladega with the GMS Racing No. 21 ARCA Chevrolet.
  • Quote: “This will be my first race on a super speedway with the truck series, but I am excited to have four other teammates on the track with me to lean on and gain good experience. It’s great to have Azalea Gynecology onboard my No. 24 Silverado this week! Hopefully I’ll be able to run all of the laps and push one of my GMS Racing teammates to a victory.”

Tyler Ankrum, No. 26 LiUNA! Chevrolet Silverado

Talladega Superspeedway Stats

  • NCWTS Starts: 2, Top 10s: 1, Best start: 2nd, Best finish: 7th (2019)

2021 NCWTS Season Stats

  • Starts: 19, Top 5s: 3, Top 10s: 5, Poles: 1 (COTA), Best finish: 3rd (twice), Laps led: 12
  • Sponsor spotlight: LiUNA! returns this week to feature on Tyler Ankrum’s No. 26 Silverado. Riding along with Chase will be ribbons with names of breast cancer survivors who are related to GMS Racing employees and crew members in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
  • Chassis history: Ankrum and his No. 26 crew will utilize winning chassis no. 104 on the high banks at Talladega, a truck that only has four races on its resume. This chassis has three Top 10 finishes, including a win at Daytona International Speedway in 2016 with Johnny Sauter. It most recently competed at Talladega in 2019, where Stewart Friesen earned a fifth place finish.
  • Shake & Bake: On the final restart in last year’s race at Talladega, Tyler Ankrum had a potential win slip away when the drivers in his line did not work together behind him. Determined to come back stronger this time around, Ankrum is ready to race for a victory to end his season on a high note. Fans may remember Tyler’s throwback paint scheme this year was a Ricky Bobby-inspired tribute, and that’s no coincidence – he wants to go fast!
  • Quote: “I’m excited to headed to ‘Dega, I always love going there but I typically don’t ever wanna go back until this weekend rolls back around. We have always brought fast trucks to compete there, but we just never have the luck to finish it out. I’m looking to finish this year and have a good run!”

Daniel Hemric, Kurt Busch Team with Breast Cancer Survivors to Paint Pit Wall Pink

Blue Cross NC brand ambassador and Joe Gibbs Racing Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric gets help from his daughter, Rhen, in painting Charlotte Motor Speedway's pit wall pink alongside dozens of breast cancer survivors on Tuesday during an event to promote the upcoming Drive for the Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina on Oct. 9. (CMS/HHP photo)
  • NASCAR drivers, breast cancer survivors share personal stories of the impact breast cancer has had while raising awareness of early detection and prevention by painting Charlotte Motor Speedway’s pit wall pink ahead of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
  • Fans can buy tickets to the Oct. 9 Drive for the Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and the Oct. 10 Bank of America ROVAL™ 400 online or at 1-800-455-FANS (3267)

CONCORD, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2021) – Alongside dozens of pink shirt-wearing breast cancer survivors, NASCAR drivers Kurt Busch and Daniel Hemric joined officials from Charlotte Motor Speedway and Blue Cross NC in painting Charlotte Motor Speedway’s pit wall pink on Tuesday.

The speedway’s eighth Paint Pit Wall Pink event has become an annual tradition to celebrate survivors, provide hope for those battling breast cancer and paint the 1,500-foot pink pit road wall to raise awareness of the importance of early detection.

Charlotte Motor Speedway Executive Vice President and General Manager Greg Walter and Performance Racing Network’s Lenny Batycki joined the survivors in painting the wall.

The event featured a special unveil of the pink Toyota Camry pace car for the Drive for the Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross NC race on Oct. 9. The car, is covered in more than 600 digital signatures of breast cancer survivors and those currently battling, serves as a reminder that no one fights alone.

During the event, Hemric, whose family has been directly impacted by breast cancer, presented a green flag to Jennifer Grady, a breast cancer survivor and senior strategic policy consultant for Blue Cross NC who shared her story during Tuesday’s event.

“I am grateful that my cancer was detected early on to afford me more treatment options, because I know that isn’t always everyone’s story,” Grady said. “Early detection has significant impact on breast cancer treatment and outcomes, and I encourage every woman to commit to annual testing.”

Additionally, Busch shared that he has rallied drivers in the Cup Series to run pink window nets during the Oct. 10 Bank of America ROVAL™ 400, to further raise awareness as part of an initiative called “Window for Hope.” The idea came to the Chip Ganassi Racing driver after he received a letter from a fan who mother was battling breast cancer asking if Busch could run a pink window net to show support for those battling.

“I’m like, ‘That sounds like a brilliant idea; let me go to work,” Busch said. “A small idea from a race fan will now have every NASCAR car at the ROVAL – at this year’s (Cup) race – will have a pink window net. We’re just trying to create more awareness of breast cancer, support survivors and everyone going through the process.”

Cheryl Parquet, Blue Cross NC’s director of community development and marketing activation, said that Paint the Wall Pink is inspiring each year.

“We’re grateful for partners like Charlotte Motor Speedway who share our passion for honoring survivors and increasing breast cancer awareness and early detection,” said Parquet. “The pink canvas ribbons our volunteers have painted are a reminder that our patients and survivors are not alone. In the face of breast cancer, we stand together.”

Wright Targets Championship Title at Sebring Doubleheader

SEBRING, Fla., (September 28, 2021) — For the first time since 2009, SRO America will return to Sebring International Raceway this weekend for the penultimate rounds of the Fanatec GT World Challenge America. Wright Motorsports leads the Pro/Am team championship by 20 points, and after a podium finish at Watkins Glen International last month, drivers Jan Heylen and Fred Poordad are expected to be strong contenders to return to Victory Circle in this weekend’s 90-minute doubleheaders. The duo currently leads in the driver point standings by 58 points and could win their respective championship this weekend.

“Our GT World Challenge America group has had a near-perfect season this year,” said Team Owner John Wright. “Everyone at the shop, the track, and behind the wheel has executed flawlessly to keep us at the top of the standings. It goes to show the quality of our program and the people in it. I feel confident that we’ll be strong here again at Sebring.”

The team’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and Michelin Pilot Challenge efforts competed at the legendary Florida circuit in March, earning a pair of second-place finishes. The team’s Porsche 911 GT3 R will be well suited for the 3.74-mile, 17-turn circuit. Wright Motorsports’ years of previous experience at Sebring International Raceway will give the team a running start, though the time of year may bring different track conditions than in the spring.

Seventeen cars will compete in the Florida doubleheader, ten of which will race in the Pro/Am class. The event will open with two test sessions on Thursday, September 30, followed by two practice sessions on Friday. After a brief qualifying session in the morning, the field will take the green flag for race one on Saturday, October 2 at 1:15 PM Eastern. Race two will commence the following afternoon at the same time, and both races will air live on youtube.com/GTWorld.

DRIVER QUOTES

Fred Poordad
Sebring should be a great event. We have never raced this car there and look forward to a fun weekend. That track has so much history and is so bumpy and fast that it should provide some great racing opportunities. It may be the last race in warm weather for a while too, so we will enjoy the Florida sun!

Jan Heylen
What’s not to love about Sebring? This place is an awesome track with lots of character and lot of places to overtake. I’m really looking forward to go to Sebring with SRO in the Porsche GT3 R. Our only goal for the weekend is to try and win the championship before heading to Indy for the 8 Hour.

DGR NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race Advance: Talladega Superspeedway

Saturday, October 2
Track: Talladega Superspeedway, 2.66-mile oval
Race: 20 of 22
Event: Chevrolet Silverado 250 (94 laps, 250 miles)

Schedule
Race: 1:00 p.m. ET (FS1)

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Monster Ford F-150

  • Deegan is making her 21st career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start on Saturday afternoon at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.
  • The Ford driver is making her second career NCWTS superspeedway start. Earlier this year in February at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Deegan made her first superspeedway start from ninth and ran in the top-10, but finished 24th after making contact with the wall and damaging her F-150.
  • In last weekend’s event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the young driver started 17th in the Craftsman F-150. Deegan had a strong run for most of the event, but late in the race she received contact from a spinning truck and was forced to retire her truck and finish 31st.
  • In June of 2020, Deegan made an ARCA Menards Series start at the Alabama superspeedway. She started third and finished seventh in the 75-lap event.
  • Veteran crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. has called 12 NCWTS events at Talladega. The New York native has earned three wins — 2007 and 2008 with Todd Bodine, 2020 with Raphael Lessard — and three pole awards, along with seven top-five and eight top-10 finishes at the 2.66-mile venue.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

  • Gray makes his 20th start of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season and 46th of his career on Saturday afternoon.
  • At Las Vegas Motor Speedway last Friday night, the 22-year-old driver battled inside the top-10 for most of the race and was running as high as second late in the final stage. After a lap 117 caution, he restarted 10th and suffered a flat tire that trapped him two laps down and relegated him to a 23rd-place finish.
  • Gray has two previous starts the 2.66-mile superspeedway – one with the NCWTS and one with the ARCA Menards Series. In the truck race last season, he was involved in a multi-truck crash and finished 29th.
  • Drivetrain issues derailed Gray’s one and only attempt at a superspeedway this season back at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February before turning a single lap.
  • Marcus Richmond has called 12 career races at Talladega with two wins, three top-fives and four top-10s. Both wins came with Timothy Peters in back-to-back visits to the track in 2014 and 2015.

Chandler Smith – No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra Camping World Trucks Talladega Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: Talladega 250, Race 20 of 22 (Race 2 in the Round of 8)
94 Laps –20/20/54; 250.04 Miles
Location: Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (2.66-mile tri-oval)
Date/Broadcast: Oct. 2, 2021, at 1 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Goes Superspeedway Racing:

  • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team head to Talladega Superspeedway Saturday for the second race in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs. Smith had a fast Tundra in the early portion of the opening race of the round at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway, finishing third in the opening stage and 10th in Stage Two before being relegated to a 35th-place finish after getting caught up in an accident in the Final Stage. The Georgia native enters this weekend’s race 24 points below the cutoff line for advancing to the Championship 4. After Saturday’s 94-lap event, the Round of 8 concludes Oct. 30 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
  • The talented teenager has proven to be a quick learner when it comes to restrictor-plate racing. He made his first superspeedway start at Talladega last October after turning 18 in June. He maneuvered his way from just outside the top 10 with 20 laps remaining up to fourth for a restart with two laps remaining. Smith was tucked in behind former Daytona 500 winner Trevor Bayne in the middle lane with his Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) teammate Raphael Lessard and Ben Rhodes nose to tail next to them on the inside lane as the field went down the backstretch on the final lap. A multi-truck wreck broke out mid-pack and the caution flew as the field was going through Turn 4. After NASCAR reviewed the cameras, Smith was credited with a third-place result. In his second superspeedway start earlier this year, he led a race-high 22 laps and finished ninth at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.
  • The 19-year-old collected his first career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory Sept. 16 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. Smith muscled his way past reigning Truck Series champion Shelden Creed on a restart with five laps remaining and then held off his KBM teammate John Hunter Nemechek to collect the victory in his 34th career start in NASCAR’s third division. The Safelite driver fended off playoff elimination with the hard-fought victory.
  • Smith finished the regular season 10th on the Camping World Truck Series playoff grid, 10 points above the cutoff line for qualifying for the post season, after posting three top-five and five top-10 finishes across 15 races. Smith and fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Carson Hocevar are the only two drivers who are competing for a driver’s championship for the first time. The other eight contenders have all competed for the Truck Series championship at least one time in previous seasons. Overall, across 19 starts in 2021, Smith has recorded one win, four top-five and seven top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 18.2.
  • The Toyota Racing Development driver has one win, 12 top-five, and 16 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.5 across 35 career Camping World Truck Series starts. In addition to his Bristol win, he has posted two runner-up finishes; at Knoxville Raceway earlier this season and at Bristol in 2019.
  • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman calls the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team in 2021. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s drivers have finished inside the top 10 in all three of his races at Talladega with Smith’s third-place finish last season his best result.
  • Safelite AutoGlass – the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – will serve as the primary sponsor on Smith’s Tundra at Bristol and for 16 races total this season. Smith General Contracting and Fortune-Johnson, a premier building contractor for multifamily projects in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, will be associate partners on the bedtop of the No. 18 Toyota for Saturday’s 94-lap event.

Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

You had a strong run at Talladega last year. Does that give you confidence as you head back there this week?
“I’m kind of hesitant to answer these types of questions on restrictor-plate tracks because a lot of it has to do with luck, timing and being at the right place at the right time. Daytona we were really good, led the most laps and at the very end we got caught up and had a flat right-rear tire that ended our day. Talladega last year, we finished I think third, but we were going to race back to the line and have the potential to have a photo finish. Overall, I’m comfortable on these tracks and I’m looking forward to it.”

What do you think it takes to be a good superspeedway racer?
“I don’t know, I’m still brand new to it. I think patience and looking out to see different moves and what you can do to advance your row or advance your position and not get in a bad situation. Also protecting what you already have, which is a lot to say and a lot to do, but I feel like that’s what it takes to be a good superspeedway racer and those are the things I’ve been following recently every time I’ve been on a superspeedway. It has seemed to work out for me.”

You climbed out of a points deficit in the opening round. Does that give you confidence that you can repeat it in the Round of 8?
“(Las) Vegas stung for sure because I thought our Safelite AutoGlass Tundra was probably the best truck out there at the start of Stage Three. I thought we were going to go ahead and advance ourselves into the next round, but circumstances didn’t end that way, so we are going to go to Talladega and Martinsville and try to repeat what we did at Bristol and bring home another win.”

Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

  • Across 35 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded one win (Bristol Motor Speedway, 9/16/2021), 267 laps led, 12 top-five and 16 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.5.
  • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
  • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
  • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1783 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.4 across 34 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Tundra:
KBM-64: The No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team will unload KBM-64 for Saturday’s race at Talladega. Smith most recently piloted this Tundra at Daytona in February where he led a race-high 22 laps and finished ninth. The Georgia native also piloted this same chassis to a third-place finish at Talladega last October.

KBM Notes of Interest:

  • KBM drivers have collected two wins, two poles, 68 laps led, nine top-five and 17 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 10.6 across 28 starts at Talladega.
  • Raphael Lessard collected the first victory of his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series career last year at the 2.66-mile tri-oval. Owner-driver Kyle Busch was victorious in the 2010 event when he finished 0.002 seconds ahead of Aric Almirola in the closest finish in Truck Series history since electronic scoring was instituted.
  • KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (89) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at Bristol Motor Speedway Chandler Smith became the 17th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
  • The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 22 career victories.

This is usually a pretty wild race, but we’re going to do our best to stay out of trouble and be there at the end.”

Truex at Talladega: Saturday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway will mark Truex’s third start at the track in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. His best finish of eighth came in 2016.

Truex also has two NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the 2.66-mile track, with his best finish of 11th coming in 2012.

They did a great job with this one and I think it’ll really stand out on the track. I can’t wait to do some superspeedway racing at ‘Dega!”

Driver: Carson Hocevar

Hocevar on Racing Talladega: “I learned a lot at Daytona earlier this year that I think will really help me at Talladega this weekend,” said Hocevar. “Our Good Sam Chevrolet looks incredible – this whole organization is so appreciative of Marcus Lemonis’ support, and everyone at Good Sam. We have nothing to lose this weekend. We have two weeks to do everything we can to put ourselves in position to compete for a championship in Phoenix.”

Hocevar at Talladega: Hocevar will make his first start at Talladega Superspeedway on Saturday. Hocevar, who was not yet 18-years-old last season, was unable to run the superspeedways, due to NASCAR rules.

Earlier this season, in his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start on a superspeedway at Daytona International Speedway, Hocevar started 12th and finished fifth.

In the Points: Hocevar had a strong run going at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but a loose wheel forced him to pit road under green flag conditions with just a handful of laps remaining. Without any time to battle back, Hocevar was left with a 22nd-place finish. Following the first race of the Round of Eight, Hocevar sits sixth in the playoff standings, 16 points out of fourth.
