Max Verstappen

Lewis followed Max in the dirty of Spain, and the strategy worked great.

Lando Norris

Lando Norris has proven to be a real star this season. The Young Brit has so far cemented his reputation as one of the F1 stars for the next decade. Carol Sainz

Pierre Gasly or Esteban Ocon are some of the contenders that were a close call for this position. However, Sainz is worth this position because he is a new Ferrari driver alongside some stars like Leclerc. The good news is that Sainz is adapting real quickly in Maranello. Carlos seems like he is not quite lucky in qualifying, even when he was with McLaren. However, he has to learn how to avoid mistakes or own up like those he committed in Baku and Budapest.

“It’s a work in progress, but we’ve made strides each weekend even though the results don’t show it. We’ve been more competitive in and around the top-10 than ever before and I’ve made fewer mistakes on my end. We have tried different things setup-wise and strategy-wise and have continued to build a notebook off of that. It’s Buga (Mike Bugarewicz) and my second year together, but first year with tracks like Sonoma, Watkins Glen, Circuit of the Americas, Road America and Indy’s road course due to last year’s postponements and these new tracks on the schedule.”

What are your thoughts on racing the Indianapolis road course this weekend instead of the oval?

“If I’m being honest, I’m sad about it – to be just honest. I think racing on the oval was so cool just because I was a kid and went and watched an Indy 500 back in the late ’90s. It was a special place and to race on the oval was just special. I mean, you think about the history of that racetrack and the people that have run around that rectangular racetrack and crossed that yard of bricks and all those things, and all the races that went on before you dating back to the early 1900s, it’s just a very special place. So, to not race on the oval is weird. I’ll certainly miss it, but I have no doubt that we will put on an exciting race on the road course and it will be a lot of fun to try and figure that place out. These new road courses have been favorable with the fans, so I hope we put on a good show for them.”

“It means having an advantage, honestly. When you go to a new track like this, every team is going to do whatever they can to have a technical advantage on the competition, and we’re already a step ahead of them with Mobil 1 under the hood. JONATHAN HASSLER, Crew Chief, No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang — WHAT IS THIS WEEK LIKE FOR YOU GOING BACK TO INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY? “The biggest focus, honestly, has been the change to the racetrack and trying to be ready to go and run the road course. It will obviously be my first race at the speedway as a crew chief, so I’ll try to definitely take care of my family and make sure they all have the opportunity to go. I made it pretty clear to all of them, but the task at hand is the race and I’m gonna be pretty into that. They can go to the race and have a good time, but I’m all business for the weekend.”

IF THE 21 TEAM DOES NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS, WHAT DOES THAT 10-RACE STRETCH AT THE END SYMBOLIZE FOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY? “For me professionally, I don’t think it’s anything different than the last few weeks. Obviously, we’ve been trying to get a win for Matt and still through the rest of the year we’re trying to get that 100th win for the Wood Brothers. I think the goal doesn’t really change a lot for me personally. We’re just trying to put the best race cars together we can each week, improve from one week to the next and let the results and the outcomes from the results kind of take care of themselves.”

HAS THERE BEEN ANY HARSH REALIZATION FOR YOU ABOUT THE INTRICACIES OF THE CUP SERIES YOU HAVE NOW LEARNED AND MADE YOU A BETTER CREW CHIEF? “I don’t want to jinx myself, but, honestly I feel like things have really rolled pretty smoothly. I’ve been in this sport basically 15 years. I’ve worked with a lot of different crew chiefs and they’ve all sort of played their part in preparing me along the way and I think so far the ride has been pretty smooth.”

HOW MANY FAMILY MEMBERS WILL YOU HAVE THIS WEEKEND? “Honestly, we’ve gotten almost 25. I’ve got my wife’s family from Zionsville. I’m from Greencastle, so I’ve got about 15 of my family and about 10 of her family coming to watch the race.”

WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU WENT TO THE SPEEDWAY AS A KID AND WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR MEMORIES AND HIGHLIGHTS THERE? “Personally, growing up what I remember the most is we went to qualifying the year of the inaugural Brickyard and then as a family that was our deal. We’d go to qualifying every year and hang out around the garage and try and get as close to the drivers as we could. Obviously, professionally we were able to win the race with Brad in 2018, so that was a huge accomplishment.”

WHERE DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE MADE AN IMPACT WITH HOW YOU’RE PREPARING CARS AND DOING THINGS WHEN YOU COME INTO A SITUATION LIKE THIS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEASON? “To your point, I’d say the core of the race car is built four to six weeks ahead of time, so there is only so much you can change leading up to the race, so I would say honestly these next few weeks are really the first cars that I’ve had some hand on the car all the way through the process. In terms of calling the race and having an impact on Matt, obviously that was sort of the immediate.”

HOW MUCH HAS CHANGED IN TERMS OF THE CARS WITH YOU HAVING MORE OF A HAND ON THINGS? “At Team Penske we keep our cars through our company fairly similar, so it’s not like I have my car, but I feel like I’ve been able to see all the different ideas and all the different options for how we can build our car and kind of voice my input. There have certainly been times along the way where the rest of the organization has been on board and there has been times where maybe my ideas were a little bit outside of the box and I use the experience of the rest of the company to maybe get reigned back in.”

IS THERE A ROAD COURSE YOU CAN COMPARE THE INDY ROAD COURSE TO? “Honestly, I think Indy is gonna be pretty unique. It maybe shares some characteristics of COTA in that there’s a lot of left and right switchbacks. It has some similarities maybe to Road America with some really big braking zones. It’s definitely unique in that it’s completely flat. We don’t have any other road courses that are like that, so I think you’re gonna see something a little bit different than what we’ve seen so far this year.”

HAVE TEAMS BUILT SPECIAL CARS FOR THIS RACE? “I would think most teams are using cars they’ve ran earlier in the year.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE VIBE OF THE TEAM SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT HARRISON WILL BE IN THE CAR NEXT YEAR? “I think there was a day or two in there that for everybody was kind of tense, and I think there was a little bit of the team trying to really understand how Matt was gonna be in the car. We got off to a really good start and I don’t think anybody wanted to see things slow down with that announcement. We were hopeful that they wouldn’t and I think, knock on wood, things after the announcement have kept going really strong, and I think everybody has eyes out front and focused on finishing strong and getting that 100th win for the Wood Brothers.”

ARE YOU IN THAT MODE WHERE YOU RUN TOP 10 AND THEN FOCUS ON TOP FIVE AND THEN PUTTING YOURSELF IN POSITION FOR A WIN? “That’s 100 percent where we’re at. I said it once coming in that I really believe that that’s the case. Top 15, top 10, top 10, top 5 and when you’re in the top 5 if you do it enough times things will play out and you’ll have the opportunity for a win. That’s been the approach and I think we’re creeping up on it.”

I ASSUME WITH YOUR POSITION IN THE POINTS THAT GAMBLING AND DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT TO TRY AND WIN IS ALWAYS OPEN, RIGHT? “Yeah, we’re definitely open to doing something that gives us the opportunity late in the race for the win. We’re always making moves even I would say early in the race hopefully that might set us back momentarily, but will put us in the best position to grab a win later.”

IT’S THE SAME TIRE AS COTA AND ROAD AMERICA. HOW IS THE FALL OFF WITH THIS TIRE? “I think there’s a couple pieces in that equation. There’s definitely the tire itself and then there’s the surface. I think Indianapolis has tended to be reasonably abrasive, so I would expect some fall off, maybe not the level that we had at Road America. Fortunately, though, we’ll get practice this week and definitely have some idea going in what we’re gonna have.”

DID THIS ROLE CHANGE TAKE YOU OUT OF ANY WORK YOU WERE DOING WITH NEXT GEN OR PUT YOU MORE INVOLVED WITH IT? “I’d say I’ve taken a step back in the Next Gen development, but fortunately in the Penske organization there’s a lot of good people and while I don’t have my hands in it directly, I’m certainly able to monitor what’s going on there, so I still feel like we’ll be in a really good position as we transition to that car.”

Milwaukee Mile Fans Can get a Case for the ARCA Menards Series Race, and Free Sunglasses Too

West Allis, WI (Aug. 10, 2021) – Race fans in and around southeastern Wisconsin and throughout the upper Midwest are getting excited about the Sprecher 150 ARCA Menards Series events scheduled for Sunday, August 29 at the Milwaukee Mile Speedway.

And for good reason.

First and foremost, the Sprecher 150 marks the return of the ARCA Menards Series to the Milwaukee Mile for the first time since Frank Kimmel’s victory at the historic venue in 2007, a gap of over 14 years.

Secondly, the event will be a part of three championship battles: the ARCA Menards Series national championship, the Sioux Chief Showdown – a championship-within-a-championship that allows drivers under the age of 18 to compete for a series title – and the ARCA Menards Series East.

The cash register receipts can be redeemed on raceday – Sunday August 29 – at the Milwaukee Mile Box Office on the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. Ticket redemption is limited to one ticket per case purchased, but there is no limit on the number of cases fans can purchase. The receipt redemption is open Monday through Friday from now until August 27 from 9am to 3pm at the Wisconsin State Fair ticket office, located at 7722 W. Meyer Shank Racing Resets for Indianapolis Motor Speedway Return

Indianapolis, Ind. (10 August 2021) – After a wild weekend in the ‘Music City’, Meyer Shank Racing (MSR) will now turn its focus to the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday (12:30pm ET, NBCSN). The IMS INDYCAR event will be a part of a big weekend at the Brickyard with the series sharing time with NASCAR’s Xfinity and Cup Series.

The return to IMS will be a special one for MSR and Helio Castroneves who will be making their first outing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since their big Indianapolis 500 win in May. The now four-time Indianapolis 500 winner will be making his third race start with MSR this season as he hopes to add another victory at IMS to his already impressive resume.

The Brazilian driver will be back behind the wheel of the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda for Saturday’s 85-lap event. Castroneves has made eight race starts on the IMS road course with a best finish of second in 2016. Castroneves also rounded out the podium in the 2014 edition of the event.

“I’m very excited to go back to IMS,” said Castroneves. “IMS is such a special place, and it now holds such an importance to me and Meyer Shank Racing after winning the Indy 500. It’s a new weekend and our focus hasn’t changed. I think we had some good pace in Nashville and now we can start getting into a groove of racing again. Hopefully Indy can bring us some more luck on Saturday and we can come home with another win!”

Meyer Shank Racing will also have Jack Harvey in the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda. For Harvey, Indianapolis Motor Speedway has proved to be a site of success with the MSR driver taking home his first-ever INDYCAR podium in 2019 at the 2.439-mile road course.

“Indy is a track that we’ve always done well at and it’s guaranteed to be a good race,” said Harvey. “We can take confidence into the weekend that we do know what a fast car looks like there and how it needs to be driven. So, we’re optimistic heading into the weekend and I don’t see any reason why we can’t go and fight for a win.”

This weekend will be a two-day show at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with practice and qualifying staged on Friday. The Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix will be broadcast live on NBCSN starting at 12:30pm ET. SiriusXM Ch. 205 will also provide live IndyCar radio coverage throughout the weekend.

KEVIN HARVICK SAID THAT HE FEELS LIKE INDY SHOULD BE A HERITAGE RACE WITH RACING ON THE TRADITIONAL OVAL. WHAT ARE YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT RACING THE ROAD COURSE?
“It’s a good question. I think that the oval, I think we lose a crown jewel when we don’t go to the oval there. This history of it. I don’t think the road course will ever be what the oval history has. So, I’m kind of disappointed that we don’t get to race on the oval. Now, in saying that, I’ve had a lot of fun on the simulator running the road course at Indy. It seems like a cool track, and I wouldn’t mind going twice and doing it two different ways. If we have to run the road course, we still want to be able to run the oval because of the history and legacy there. Everybody wants a real Brickyard trophy. I feel like this weekend, when you win there, it’s not going to be like winning on the oval. That’s my viewpoint.”

YOU’RE GOING TO RUN THE XFINITY RACE THERE. HOW MUCH WILL THAT LEND TO BE ABLE TO PULL IT OFF?
“I think it’s going to be huge to get the Xfinity race in on Saturday. I think it was good this past weekend and anytime you can get on the track, I think you start fresh for the Cup race. I’m really excited about running the Indy road course race. Billy Scott and everybody at Our Motorsports has worked hard. It’s the same car we brought this past weekend. I had to fix the track bar this week and those guys have been working hard on it. So, it’ll be great to get track time and really see what that track is all about.”

HOW NERVOUS ARE YOU ABOUT MAKING THE PLAYOFFS? DOES THE FACT THAT THIS IS ANOTHER ROAD COURSE, DOES THAT MAKE IT EVEN MORE NERVE WRACKING?
“No, I’ve been pretty calm, really, about it. I know the situation I’m in. It’s unfortunate the amount of winners that we’ve had this year. I feel like we’d be well in a safe place right now, but we’re not. It’s just the situation we’re in and we’re racing our teammate. But I’m pretty confident after being on the SIM a couple of weeks at Indy. I usually don’t pick-up the road courses on the simulator very fast, but for some reason, Indy came to me pretty quick, which is good, I think, for what we’re going into. I think qualifying is the biggest thing on my mind right now for this coming weekend and getting a good qualifying position, because I know how important, the way it is, it’s so hard to pass on all these road courses that get strung out, that starting position matters.

“So, I’m putting a lot of focus into qualifying and trying to make sure that we start up front and give ourselves the best way to get points. We have a 15-point gap right now and if we can maintain or gain a little this weekend, I feel like the next two weeks are good tracks for us and we’ll be in a pretty decent situation going into Daytona, if it is a points game. Obviously, I’d like to lock ourselves in with a win and just don’t want any new winners. That would really put us out. So yeah, I’m in a pretty good calm situation as far as my mental state. I’ve been working out and am ready to go race and see what it brings us. I think we have been very consistent this year. We just haven’t had the speed that we want at some of these tracks, but the road course stuff has been fun. It’s such an improvement for me that I’d love to go back to some of these road courses a second time with what I’ve learned this year.”

OF ALL THE ROAD COURSES YOU’VE RUN THIS YEAR, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST COMPARABLE TO INDY?
“Wow, it’s so flat. We’ve got elevation change at every track that we’ve gone to. I’d say Daytona has a little less elevation change. So for me, I really don’t know because the asphalt at Indy is so different the way the grooves are cut in it and it’s using a lot of lateral grip there. Sonoma, I think braking force-wise, is probably going to be similar; the amount of brake force and stuff like that because it seems like the track falls off a little bit. So, I’m thinking maybe Sonoma and Daytona, in between there.”

LOOKING AHEAD TO MICHIGAN, FANS HAVEN’T BEEN THERE FOR TWO YEARS. YOU’VE GOT THE HERITAGE TROPHY ON THE LINE AND YOU’LL HAVE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT RACING EXPERIENCE THERE EVEN THOUGH IT’S A BIG WIDE TRACK. TALK ABOUT RACING THIS PACKAGE THERE AND THE EXPERIENCE
“Michigan has been a fun race for us on the No. 3 team for us the last couple of years, so we always circle it. We are really focused on this one and the points situation we’re in, we like going to places where we’ve had success in the past. Everybody at RCR has put a lot of focus on our car for that weekend, knowing it’s a good place for us. We’d like to go there and show out for our partners at Dow and Chevrolet. Dow is based out of Midland up there and it’s always good to put on a good show for everyone that helps us get to the track each and every weekend.”

DO YOU THAT DAYTONA IS THE FINAL RACE OF THE REGULAR SEASON? WHAT IS YOUR CONFIDENCE LEVEL KNOWING THAT YOU HAVE THAT ON THE SCHEDULE WITH ONE LAST CHANCE TO GET INTO THE PLAYOFFS?
“Yeah, that gives the confidence to you as being the last race of the year. And the situation I am in right now, I think I’ve been in other situations down the road, it would probably be more stressful. But for me, we’re in a little bit of a nothing to lose attitude right now because we’ve got to gain on our teammate, and if not, we’ve got to win somehow. So, Daytona is that place and it gives us an opportunity with our ECR horsepower. I don’t know. We’ve just had the ability to keep that No. 3 at the front when we go to Daytona. I like it. It’s a magical place and I’ve had some great runs there. I’m pumped that it’s the last race of our regular season.”

IN TALKING ABOUT DAYTONA, LAST YEAR, AS THE REGULAR SEASON FINALE, YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT WITH YOUR WIN. DID YOU NOTICE THAT THE RACING WAS MUCH DIFFERENT?
“For some reason, I can’t really recall that particular race. Usually, I’m pretty good at that. But I think we were kind of coasting in because we knew we were in the Playoffs. But Daytona and Talladega are always a chance because there’s an opportunity there. And with it being the final of the regular season, there are some that will go about it and say hey, I’ve got to get to the checkered flag to have a chance to have a chance to win and there are some that think they’ve got to lead every lap. I’ll definitely be re-watching it, and kind of seeing how people played it and who was aggressive in those moments. But it’s so easy to get aggressive and wipe out half the field there. So many things happen at the speedways with an errant move or an aggressive move and take a lot of people out early. So, you don’t want to be in that situation. But we’ve been pretty successful at the speedways by keeping ourselves up front. But I’ve seen guys get wrecked leading. So, anything can happen at these places. You’ve got to have a good strategy and also a fast car that kind of keeps you out of the way, and a bit of luck.”

FOR INDIANAPOLIS AND YOUR WORK ON THE SIMULATOR, HAVE YOU NOTICED MUCH OF A TIRE FALLOFF? IS IT ANY MORE OR LESS THAN OTHER ROAD COURSES?
“Our tire model, we do take grip away to see what it’s like on a 10 to 15-lap run. But it’s kind of hard to tell without getting there with that tire and really knowing. We have people at Chevrolet that kind of predict what that falloff is going to be. Those predictions, we try to get them as accurate as possible and kind of build around, knowing that our tires are going to fall off or whatnot. So, we’ve got a prediction. We just need to prove it out in practice.”

YOU’VE BEEN HITTING THE GYM PRETTY HARD WITH PAUL SWAN EVERYDAY. WHAT DOES THAT DO FOR YOUR MENTALITY IN A PRESSURE SITUATION?
“Hopefully, in any situation in the car, you feel good. You don’t want to have a point where you don’t feel strong enough to be the same driver every lap. Last weekend at Watkins Glen it was pretty hot. And it was a tough physical race. Anytime you can put yourself in a better situation with your heart rate and everything, health-wise, I think it’s better. You are more clear, mentally. I noticed a lot of the guys switching to those Cool Shirts. I’m definitely going to probably try that, coming up. Actually, this weekend is the first time we’re probably going to have that. I ran it in Michael Annett’s car when I jumped-in and it was a big game changer. Anytime you can keep yourself in good physical shape. I worked out with Paul during the off-week, and he’ll kill you. He works out for hours. So, I’ve been back at the gym with our trainer and it’s a little more based on what I do in the car and staying more mobile and keeping my body right, so I’m stretched out and feel good when I get in the race car. And yeah, healthy is a good thing.”
