New for ’22: Speedway Motorsports to Create Next Generation Atlanta Motor Speedway with Historic Track Reprofile

HAMPTON, Ga. (July 6, 2021) – Following the July 11 Quaker State 400 presented by Walmart, AMS will break ground on a historic project to create the next generation of Atlanta Motor Speedway and a first-of-its-kind, all-new race experience in 2022.

Following 10 months of confidential research, development, testing and simulation with engineers and iRacing, the reprofile will increase the current 24-degree banking in Atlanta’s turns to 28-degrees – higher than any other intermediate track on the current NASCAR circuit. Straightaway banking will remain five degrees. In addition to the new high banks, the racing surface will become narrower with an overall decrease in width from 55 feet to 40 feet. New widths will be 52 feet on the front stretch, 42 feet on the back stretch and 40 feet in the turns.

The project will pave the way for a bold new era of NASCAR racing in Atlanta.

“As Atlanta’s racing surface has aged, we’ve challenged ourselves to reimagine what NASCAR racing at an intermediate track can be,” said Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith. “With high banks in the turns, narrower width and new pavement technology, Atlanta will be unlike any other mile-and-a-half track on the circuit. It’s all new for ’22 and this will be specifically designed for close, competitive racing.”

The reconfiguration of Atlanta Motor Speedway is the latest innovative first from Speedway Motorsports, which has repeatedly redefined what’s possible in NASCAR. From the debut of the ROVAL™ at Charlotte Motor Speedway, to the first NASCAR Cup Series race held on dirt since 1970 at Bristol Motor Speedway and NASCAR’s first trip to Circuit of The Americas earlier this year, Speedway Motorsports has been a driving force behind many of NASCAR’s most highly-anticipated events.

Construction is slated to begin the week following the July 11 Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart, with the next generation Atlanta Motor Speedway making its debut in 2022 in conjunction with NASCAR’s Next Gen car.

“Our partners at Speedway Motorsports have reprofiled Atlanta Motor Speedway to optimize the racing with the Next Gen car, and early simulations suggest the racing will be closer and even more competitive,” said Steve O’Donnell, NASCAR Executive Vice President and Chief Racing Development Officer. “From the Charlotte ROVAL™ to the Bristol Dirt Race and now a re-imagined Atlanta, Marcus Smith and his team continue to take bold, innovative steps to bring unique and exciting racing experiences to our fans.”

Throughout the development process, Speedway Motorsports has partnered with iRacing to test and verify concepts for the future Atlanta Motor Speedway. The world-renowned motorsports simulator not only provided a virtual rendering of each concept, but also provided key data on how NASCAR’s Next Gen car will perform on the reconfigured 1.54-mile oval.

“Flexing the muscles of our virtual track-building capabilities to prototype Speedway Motorsport’s vision for Atlanta Motor Speedway has been a fun and exciting process,” said iRacing Executive Vice President and Executive Producer Steve Myers. “From one concept to the next, we’ve seen the future of AMS take shape; all without moving a shovel of dirt in the real world.”

The current asphalt at AMS is the oldest racing surface the NASCAR Cup Series will visit in 2021. Since its last repave in 1997, the speedway has hosted 38 NASCAR Cup Series races, 24 NASCAR Xfinity Series races, 20 Camping World Truck Series races, 10 ARCA Series races, and four IndyCar Series races on its 1.54-mile oval plus countless U.S. Legends and Bandolero car races on its frontstretch quarter-mile “Thunder Ring.”

AMS has played host to some of NASCAR’s most memorable moments on the current surface, including Dale Earnhardt’s 0.010-second margin of victory over Bobby Labonte in 2000, Kevin Harvick’s emotional and record-setting 0.006-second margin of victory over Jeff Gordon in Earnhardt’s Richard Childress Racing car the following year, Carl Edwards last-lap pass on Jimmie Johnson to earn his first Cup Series victory in 2005, and a legendary battle to the checkers between Gordon and Johnson in 2011.

“Our operations staff has done everything possible to extend the life of our racing surface, and as a result fans have enjoyed some historic moments and fantastic finishes at Atlanta,” said AMS Executive Vice President and General Manager Brandon Hutchison. “While this asphalt cannot outlast Father Time, the memories of the great racing will last forever. NASCAR’s best will have one more chance to add to the legacy of this surface with a grand finale at the Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart on July 11.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series gets the first crack at Atlanta’s slick and abrasive track surface during the Credit Karma Money 250 on Saturday, July 10. The weekend is headlined by the Quaker State 400 Presented by Walmart on Sunday, July 11, with Chase Elliott, Kevin Harvick, Ryan Blaney, and the rest of the NASCAR Cup Series’ stars battling for glory.

FORD GOING FOR SIX STRAIGHT CUP WINS AT AMS

Ford enters this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race looking to extend its Atlanta win streak to six after Ryan Blaney won the first race at the track in March. Blaney passed Kyle Larson eight laps to go and extended his lead the rest of the way as he took the checkered flag by 2.083 seconds ahead of Larson. Blaney led 25 laps on the day as he won for the first time in Atlanta and fifth time his career. He was going in the top 10 by fellow Ford drivers Chris Buescher (7th) and Kevin Harvick (10th). Brad Keselowski started this current win streak as he and Harvick alternated Atlanta wins from 2017-2020.

CINDRIC STILL ATOP NASCAR XFINITY STANDINGS

Austin Cindric remains on top of the NASCAR XFINITY Series standings as he goes for his second regular-season championship in a row. With nine races remaining before the playoffs start, Cindric finds himself with an 89-point lead over second-place AJ Allmendinger. Cindric leads the series with four wins and 13 top-10 finishes in 17 starts.

KESELOWSKI GETS FIRST CUP WIN FOR MUSTANG

Brad Keselowski gave Mustang its first NASCAR Cup Series victory as he held off Martin Truex Jr. at the finish to win the Folds of Honor 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2019. Keselowski, who was battling an illness all weekend and had Austin Cindric standing by in case he needed relief, led the final 33 laps to post his 28th career victory. In all, Ford led 177 of the 325 laps and won for the third straight year at the 1.5-mile track.

HARVICK DOMINATES

Kevin Harvick led eight times for a race-high 181 laps in winning the Fold’s of Honor 500 in 2018 and completing a sweep of the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY races. After winning all three stages the day before in his Ford Mustang, Harvick took the first stage in the Cup race and then led the final 25 laps to post his 38th career victory and third with Ford. Brad Keselowski finished second and Clint Bowyer third to give Ford a 1-2-3 sweep. Ford dominated from start to finish as four drivers combined to lead 272-of-325 laps. Harvick became the first Ford driver to sweep a Cup/XFINITY weekend since Joey Logano did it in 2015 at Watkins Glen International.

SNOW DAYS

Morgan Shepherd captured Ford’s 400th series victory in 1993 when snow delayed the Motorcraft Quality Parts 500 for nearly a week. The original race date was Sunday, March 14, 1992, but a blizzard that would eventually be called the ‘Storm of the Century’ pounded the Atlanta area with 6-8 inches of snow. An estimated 82,000 fans came back the following Saturday, where they were greeted by souvenir rigs that sports t-shirts proclaiming ‘I Survived the Atlanta Blizzard 500.’ When the race started, Mark Martin had the dominant car as he led 140 of the first 225 laps, but engine problems put him out of the running and Shepherd took advantage as he stretched his fuel mileage to the finish, leading the final 12 laps and winning by a whopping 23.50 seconds. The win for Shepherd, who was 51 at the time, was his fourth and final victory in the NASCAR Cup Series.

SWEEP DREAMS

Marvin Panch was the first driver to sweep both AMS races in a single season when he did it in 1965 with the Wood Brothers. Georgia native Bill Elliott posted a pair of season sweeps (1985 and 1992) and won five times overall while Carl Edwards registered the first win of his career at the speedway in 2005 and matched it later that fall.

LORENZEN LAPS THE FIELD

Ford went to victory lane at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the first time in 1961 when NASCAR Hall of Famer Fred Lorenzen captured the Festival 250 on July 9 while driving for Holman-Moody. He did it in dominating fashion as well by lapping the field. Lorenzen, who led 52 laps on the day, beat runner-up Bob Welborn by one lap in his 1961 Ford. Richard Petty finished third that afternoon, but was three laps down. That victory served as a springboard for Lorenzen’s future success at AMS, which included becoming the first driver to win the Atlanta 500 three straight years (1962-63-64).

Best Betting Strategies For NASCAR Xfinity Series Races

One of the most entertaining and unpredictable sports, NASCAR has caught the imagination of fans throughout the United States.

If you are an avid gambler and NASCAR enthusiast, you may be wondering how to make more money betting on NASCAR Xfinity Series races.

Below is a short guide we have put together, explaining the best betting strategies for NASCAR Xfinity Series road races and other NASCAR events.

Our strategies will help you avoid putting money on drivers unlikely to win the race or finish in a high position.

How You Can Bet on NASCAR Races

One of the advantages of betting on NASCAR races is that you have many options regarding your bet. Most people would assume that betting on a sporting event is restricted to predicting the winner, but that is not the case with NASCAR.

The most straightforward bet in a NASCAR race is the to-win bet. These bets focus on the winner of the race, which means you only make money if your chosen driver is the first to cross the finish line at the end of the race.

Since predicting an outright winner in NASCAR can be difficult, some gamblers prefer to engage in NASCAR betting that focuses on other aspects of the race.

Matchup Bets

An exciting way to wager money on NASCAR races is by predicting who will finish higher out of two chosen drivers. These bets are a lot more fun than straightforward race-win bets. You get to assess some of the drivers in the midfield or even in the back of the pack.

Say you predict that driver A will finish ahead of driver B at the third road race of the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Even if driver A ends in 15th place, as long as they finish one place higher than driver B, your bet pays out.

Ensure you are only picking drivers in matchup bets who have superior machinery. In most instances, the driver with the best machinery is likely to finish higher at the end of the race.

Pole Position and Fastest Lap Bets

NASCAR races are long and eventful, with multiple pit stops, crashes, and other unforeseen incidents. There are countless incidents where the driver you bet to win a race leads with a few laps to go, only for their tire to blow.

If you want to avoid such a fate with your bets, you could focus on who will emerge as the fastest person during qualifying or race day. Betting on pole position allows you to guess who will start the race in the first spot.

The fastest lap bet is another exciting option for making money during NASCAR races. Rather than analyzing the racecraft and consistency of drivers, you only need to predict which car and driver combination will be outright fastest on race day.

Analyze Current and Past Season Performances

Regardless of the segment of a NASCAR race where you choose to place a bet, you must do so after conducting the proper research. Start by assessing driver and team performances in a given season, especially on similar tracks.

If a team struggles on road courses and the upcoming race is the third or fourth road course for the season, you may want to steer clear of betting on that team.

Current season performance is a significant indicator of how a team or driver will finish in upcoming races, but it is not the only criteria. Past performances at a specific circuit also matter as some drivers thrive in particular conditions.

Watch and Assess Practice Sessions

A key advantage for NASCAR betting enthusiasts is that you have many chances to assess how a team or driver is performing before a given race. NASCAR has televised practice sessions before every Xfinity Series race, where drivers test out various setups to try and find the winning combination.

The gamblers who take the time to watch these sessions and analyze how drivers are performing will be the ones to profit on race day. Even reading the results of a practice session is not enough, as you may miss crucial context that explains the reasons behind each driver’s best lap times.

If you are serious about betting on NASCAR most weekends, you must put in the time to watch the drivers practicing ahead of qualifying and the race.

Brett Moffitt to pilot second AM Racing truck at Knoxville Raceway

STATESVILLE, N.C.: AM Racing confirmed today that 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) champion Brett Moffitt will pilot a second-team entry in this Friday night’s inaugural Corn Belt 150 presented by Premier Chevy Dealers at Knoxville Raceway.

Moffitt, a 12-time NCWTS winner will drive the No. 37 Concrete Supply | Destiny Homes Chevrolet Silverado with former series’ winning crew chief Jamie Jones leading the event.

Knoxville will mark the first time AM Racing has fielded a second Truck Series entry since Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in 2017 when both trucks fielded by the Statesville, N.C.-based organization finished inside the top-10 led by a career-best second-place result by mainstay driver Austin Wayne Self.

Knoxville is an important race for Moffitt who competes full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Our Motorsports. The legendary dirt track is nestled in Moffit’s home state of Iowa and is a venue he grew up competing at.

In 2007, Moffitt became the youngest feature Knoxville event winner in dirt modified competition.

“I’m stoked for this opportunity to compete in Friday night’s Truck Series race at Knoxville,” said Moffitt. “I appreciate AM Racing putting a second team together to allow me to be a part of this race and return to a track that has such sentimental value to me.

“Hopefully, we can have a good race and contend for the win in our No. 37 Concrete Supply | Destiny
Homes Chevrolet.”

In addition to Concrete Supply, JMT Trucking will join Moffitt in his seventh NCWTS race of the season. Both companies are a part of the Rasmussen Group who will also support the 28-year-old Moffitt in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway.

“We are proud to expand our relationship with Brett to now include the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this weekend at Knoxville,” said Rasmussen Group president Jeff Rasmussen. “Brett is an extraordinary driver who has the capabilities of excelling on all types of racetrack disciplines and I look forward to seeing how he and AM Racing perform on Friday night.”

Tim Mallicoat, CEO of the Rasmussen Group added, “This is a huge opportunity for the Rasmussen Group to receive double exposure, especially at a race like Knoxville – a track where Brett has experience and is sure to draw attention from the locals and the competition alike. We wish he and AM Racing the best of luck at Knoxville, as well as Atlanta.”

AM Racing team president Kevin Cywinski said adding a second truck for Knoxville is the start of a long-term plan for the veteran Truck Series program.

“We could not be happier to have a champion driver like Brett Moffitt competing under the AM Racing banner at Knoxville,” sounded Cywinski. “It has always been our intention and part of our long-term strategy to expand our team to two trucks and Knoxville is the first step to making that happen.

“We know this race is an important event for Brett and his partners and believe we will provide him a truck capable of capturing AM Racing another top-10 finish or better on Friday night.”

In addition to Concrete Supply, Destiny Homes and JMT Trucking, Aspen Aire Inc., Detrick Excavation and Grading, Gilcrest Jewett, Northland Foundations Inc. and Vista Investments will serve as associate marketing partners for the final dirt Truck Series race of the season.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 6, 2021) – The late Jim Pace, an accomplished race-car driver and the Event Chair and Chief Operating Officer of the inaugural 2019 Chattanooga Motorcar Festival, will be honored in a pre-race ceremony during this year’s Festival at the Pace Grand Prix at the Bend on Saturday, Oct. 16. The three-day Festival runs from Oct. 15-17, 2021.

Named after the personable driver and coach who spent more than three decades competing successfully in a variety of series and cars, the Pace Grand Prix will celebrate the life of this respected racing veteran who passed away on Nov. 13, 2020, from COVID-19.

The all-new purpose-built two-mile race course in downtown Chattanooga will be dedicated to Jim Pace’s memory. Notable supporters, industry leaders and friends will reflect on Pace’s contributions to the Festival and the sport. A number of other special events surrounding the celebration will be announced at a later date.

“It is hard to imagine that, after living the perilous life of a race-car driver with all its dangers, a healthy man like Jim could be taken away by a virus called COVID-19,” said Festival founder Byron DeFoor, in a heartfelt statement in 2020. “We all feel that we wish we had more time, more instruction, more of life’s racing adventures with him.

“We are privileged to have known him and worked with him, and this tribute is just a small gesture to honor the man whose Southern charm, talent and grace were unequalled.”

Jim Pace was born in 1961 in Monticello, Mississippi, and his racing career began in the Barber Saab Pro Series in 1988. He soon moved to sports car racing and won the GTU class at the 1990 24 Hours of Daytona. Along with co-drivers Scott Sharp and Wayne Taylor, Pace drove the Riley & Scott Mk III to victory in the 1996 24 Hours of Daytona. Later that season he competed for the same team in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After years of only driving at Daytona, Pace returned to regular drives in the Rolex Sports Car Series GT class in 2007. In 2008 he drove a Porsche 911 for The Racer’s Group and in 2009 drove for Farnbacher Loles Racing.

At one time in his young life, Pace had decided to become a doctor. He majored in pre-med at Mississippi State, then entered the University of Mississippi Medical School in 1983. After three years and three days into medical school, he decided that racing cars would be his life and career. Pace resided in Ridgeland, Mississippi.

Bridget Battles at Irwindale Speedway in front of a HUGE Crowd

TOOELE, UT, July 5, 2021 – True to form Bridget spent her time in the BMI Racing race shop helping prepare her HMH Construction Chevrolet ARCA car for round 3 of the ARCA Menards West Series being held at Irwindale Speedway in Southern California.

In the heat of the day, the cars rolled out on track for the combined practice/qualifying session. While this was Bridget’s second time racing at Irwindale Speedway, it was the first time racing at that track in her new chassis. The team worked on the car, and Bridget continued to work on her braking points and drive off the corner. The session wrapped up with Bridget being 14th fastest.

This was the first race of the season with no restrictions on spectators, and Irwindale Speedway put on show for the fans with their Night of Destruction. Activities included a driver autograph session, the ARCA Menards West Race, jet car burndown, trailer destruction races and the largest fireworks of the year, just to name a few items!

The green flag waived and Bridget speed across the start/finish line in the HMH Construction Chevrolet. Working hard to find her rhythm, Bridget continued to work with her spotter on her lines, and braking points.

At the halfway mark at 75 laps there was a 5 minute break for teams to service the cars. The crew from BMI Racing serviced the car with Sunoco Race Fuel and tires, and making a track bar adjustment to improve the handling.

The green flag dropped once again for the second half of the race. The changes made by crew chief Sarah Burgess helped with the handling and Bridget continued to improve. An incident on lap 119 caused Bridget to take evasive action to avoid the 2 car crash, unfortunately her car backed into the wall. The car was brought back down pit road, and the team went to work on it and managed to get Bridget back out on track. The HMH Construction Chevrolet finished 13th.

A replay of Saturday’s NAPA Auto Parts 150 presented by the West Coast Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame will air on NBCSN on Thursday, July 8, starting at 4 p.m. ET.

Bridget’s next race will be the ARCA Menards West Series at Colorado National Speedway July 31st.

6 Ways to Keep Your New Car in Optimal Condition

If you are lucky enough to purchase a new car, you will be well aware that they are not cheap to buy or to run.  A new car is a considerable investment, so you will want to do everything you can to keep it looking good, running well, and for it to retain its value. Here are 6 ways to keep your new car in optimal condition.

Look After the Battery

If you do not drive your car on a regular basis, the battery will degrade and may go flat. Experts recommend that a car battery is replaced every four years – it does not pay to try to extend the life beyond this period as you may be halfway through a long journey when your battery gives up the ghost.

To maintain the battery, you should check the acid levels every six months or so. If you continuously drive short distances and use lots of battery-draining devices in the car, the battery life will be compromised. Water levels should be topped up regularly with distilled water, especially if the battery is stratified.

Drive Safely and Sensibly

Obviously, it makes sense to drive your car as safely and sensibly as possible to avoid accidents that can cause damage to you, other drivers, and the car.  Avoid potholes and bumps on the road that can ruin the car’s suspension and tires. You should also be gentle with your steering wheel, gearbox, brakes, and accelerator to decrease mechanical wear and tear.

Although you should not be heavy on the gas, you should rev your car to the red line limit at least every hundred miles as carbon deposits can build up in the valves and reduce efficiency. In addition, diesel cars should be taken on long motorway journeys at least once a month to prevent the particulate filters from becoming clogged with harmful emissions.

Check and Change the Fluids

Fluids such as water, brake fluid, and coolant should be checked at least once a fortnight. Check your oil by looking at the level with the dipstick and top up if required. Oil should be light brown/yellow in color – if it is dark or dirty, your car will require a complete oil change.

Keep it Covered

If you have a garage, you should keep your car in there to protect it from extreme weather conditions that can cause it to rust or the paintwork to fade.  Keeping it inside will protect it from theft and vandalism too. If you do not have a garage, you may want to consider renting one nearby or buying a fabric cover for it.

Lose Weight

Don’t carry too much cargo in your new car as you can damage the suspension. Also, too much weight in the car puts extra pressure on the breaks and tires and causes them to wear down quickly.

Have it Serviced Regularly

Like you visit a doctor for a medical regularly, you should have your car serviced at least once a year to ensure each and every component is in optimal condition.
