Garcia and Tandy hopeful for continued success at Watkins Glen

Returning to the track for the six hours of Watkins Glen Sunday, Corvette Racing drivers Antonio Garcia and Nick Tandy look to continue their winning ways at the Glen. This will be the first time back to the track since it was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Garcia, driver of the No. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM Chevy, has yet to secure a race victory at Watkins Glen despite having won other endurance races including Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring. The Corvette driver will look to change that this Sunday, as The Glen is a track he has circled on his bucket list.

“The Glen is one of my favorite events since I discovered it back in 2006, I think,” Garcia said. “I really liked it and really wanted to win that race. I think I have only won it once or twice, I can’t remember. But every time I am there, I really like the event.

“The whole atmosphere with all the race fans around the area is really, really good. So hopefully we have a really good crowd over there. And it is going to be nice during the races this year just to have more and more crowds and get more involvement between us drivers and the fans. I think we are going in the right direction so looking forward to this weekend for sure.”

Despite not yet winning that race, Garcia has had experience racing in the former Grand-Am Series sprint races which could provide helpful information when he steps into the car.

“There are a few differences,” Garcia added. “We will run into the night (during the July 2 sprint race). From what I remember, the racetrack seems to change quite a lot during the cool-down of the day and going into dusk. There are a few things we will need to learn because it’s the first time we will have run there at that time.

“The experience of Corvette Racing will be good enough to help us analyze and anticipate what the car will do. It will be new for us, though, and we need to see how the track develops. It won’t be the same as it will be in the Six Hours. You just need to react to what the track conditions are. Strategies probably will change a tiny bit. But even in the Six Hours, when it comes to the final two hours it’s basically like a sprint race so nothing much will change.”

Garcia’s teammate, Nick Tandy, a Corvette Racing newcomer, is a former and defending race winner at The Glen in the GTLM category. Tandy is coming off the race victory at Detroit and has confidence that he will have a strong car this weekend.

“Yes (laughing), I guess so,” Tandy said. “My confidence level is growing all the time with each day I spend with the team and each race I do in the car. We had a great Detroit event for the team with both cars. The cars were competitive. The cars were reliable. The team did a good job and we had a good fight with speed in the race and also strategy. This got us kind of back going into the swing of things going racing. It’s good to know we’ve had that kind of week of practice if you like.

“As for Watkins Glen, I remember the last time we were there. It basically came down to a fight with my car and this other chap that is next to me in the video in a yellow Corvette. I’m kind of hoping it will come down to that again in the next race, but this time it is the two Corvettes out front fighting it out for the last couple of hours. Yes, it’s just great to think about the fact of going back. Driving a fast car around Watkins Glen, it’s always a pleasure. So we’re looking forward to going back to compete and hopefully bag another win for the No. 4, and if not, then for our buddies in the No. 3.”

Ernie Francis Jr. Winningest Trans Am Driver at Mid-Ohio Sports Course

Francis Jr. among legendary Trans Am drivers to win at Mid-Ohio

LEXINGTON, Ohio (21 June 2021) – Ernie Francis Jr. has been consistent in two areas competing in the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli. The 23-year-old South Floridian has captured the championship every year since joining the series fulltime in 2014 – and has included a victory at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course all seven years.

Francis won in TA3 in 2014-15; TA3 in 2016; and the premier TA category from 2017-20. When the series returns for the 34th time June 25-27, he is expected to be at the wheel of the No. 98 Future Star Racing Ford Mustang.

Mid-Ohio was part of the Golden Years of Trans Am. Jerry Titus won in a Carroll Shelby Ford Mustang in the debut race in 1967 during Trans Am’s second season. Roger Penske then won back-to-back events with his Sunoco Camaros in 1968-69, piloted by Mark Donohue and Ronnie Bucknum.

The series was a Mid-Ohio fixture in the 1980s and early 1990s. Winners included Willy T. Ribbs in 1983; Wally Dallenbach Jr., Scott Pruett, Dorsey Schroeder and Tommy Kendall for Jack Roush; Jack Baldwin in the Hot Wheels Camaro and Hans Stuck in a Group 44 Audi. Greg Pickett and Darrin Brassfield were two-time victors.

Paul Gentilozzi won three consecutive Mid-Ohio races over a four-year span beginning in 1998, driving a Corvette, Ford Mustang and Jaguar XKR. Butch Leitzinger won in 2002 in a Tom Gloy Corvette.

Trans Am returned in 2012, and has been competing at Mid-Ohio annually since then. Simon Gregg is a two-time Mid-Ohio winner, scoring in 2012 and 2016 in a Corvette. Other TA winners include Cliff Ebben in 2013 (Mustang); Doug Peterson in 2014 (Corvette); and Paul Fix in 2015 (Corvette).

“I’ve got a lot of memories from Mid-Ohio, and most of them are good,” said Peterson, who led the TA2® Masters Class last year with a fifth-place finish. “I won the Run-Offs there in Formula Mazda in 2003, but got DQed because of a restrictor, so I came back and won it again. My favorite times were working with Tommy Byrne, Calvin Fish and others during the Friday test days, giving me fantastic feedback. I’ve had a lot of great races there, I’ve raced there a lot. I think the key is just to let the car roll; you can really go fast there in Turn 1 if you turn in a little early. And, be patient; don’t outrace yourself, especially in these bigger cars.”

Thomas Merrill won in TA2® in 2020, beating Scott Lagasse Jr. and Mike Skeen by less than a second. Other TA2® races were won by Bob Stretch (2012), Cameron Lawrence (2013), Adam Andretti (2014), Gar Robinson (2015), Lawrence Loshak (2016), Tony Buffomante (2017), Rafa Matos (2018) and Marc Miller (2019).

Trans Am returns to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the Vintage Grand Prix June 25-27. Live stream coverage will start Saturday for the Trans Am TA2 race (12:55pm Eastern) on the Trans Am by Pirelli Racing App.

Stoner Car Care Racing Heads Back to IMSA Competition at the Glen

The team and drivers have competed in over 30 hours of racing in preparation for this weekend’s endurance event

ORLANDO, Fla. (21 June 2021) – The Stoner Car Care Racing fielded by Automatic Racing team heads back to IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge (IMPC) action this weekend in Saturday’s Tioga Downs Casino Resort 240 (2:05 p.m. Eastern, NBC Sports Gold’s TRACKPASS) at historic Watkins Glen International.

Rob Ecklin Jr. (Lancaster, Pa.), Ramin Abdolvahabi (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and New York local driver Brandon Kidd (Rochester, NY) will take the wheel of the No. 09 Stoner Car Care Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for the four-hour race, the second of two endurance events for the series this season.

The team has not seen IMSA action since March’s Sebring event, though they have been anything but idle. While earning three podium finishes in the World Racing League’s endurance events at Road America and Daytona (including a victory in the second of two eight-hour races at Road America) in it’s previous generation Aston Martin, the team has competed in over 30 hours of racing.

The team also conducted a two-day test at VIRginia International Raceway recently, bridging the gap between the older Aston Martin and the latest iteration, which is in its third year of IMSA competition. Between the race events and the test, the team and drivers feel more than race ready as they approach the weekend at the Glen, where they enjoyed the car’s first race lead in 2019.

“I feel very good about getting back behind the wheel of the ‘new’ Aston Martin,” said Ecklin. “We made some good improvements in the VIR test that we’ll take into this weekend. We know this track well, but the caveat is – we haven’t been here in two years. The last time we were here we led midway through the race, so we know the car has had pace here in the past. I always go humbly into this race weekend, knowing we have to get back into the “feel” of the track. It’s such a fast track and it requires commitment to get maximum speed, especially out of the Hairpin and The Boot, so it has its share of challenges.”

Kidd joined the team and the series in 2018 following multiple seasons racing late model stock cars, dirt track sprint cars and the NASCAR ARCA series. Born in Syracuse and living in Rochester, Kidd knows the area – but not necessarily the Glen. The weekend is the best chance his friends, family and co-workers will have to see him race (a registered financial planner, Kidd works with Rochester-based Pinnacle Investments, who will have a sizable contingent at the Glen).

“I’ve only raced at Watkins Glen twice before, both with the Stoner Car Care team,” said Kidd. “I’ve put a ton of laps in on my simulator, which is the next best thing. It’s one of the best tracks in the world to race on so to have that in my backyard is very special. It’s also quite special to be able to have family, friends and co-workers come to watch me race – and this is their only chance to do that. Access is getting better as we’re coming out of COVID, so we’re expecting a lot of people and that makes the race weekend even better for me. Few of my friends know much about racing so they always leave with a greater appreciation for what’s involved.”

The continued competition through the 2021 season has the team eager for a return to IMSA action this weekend.

“These guys are all warmed up,” said Automatic Racing team manager David Russell. “We may not have been running with IMSA, but we’ve been racing a great deal. The WRL runs on street tires, which requires the drivers to be a little more on the edge, so I think it will make the guys just that much faster. It’s been a great training tool, especially just the sheer number of hours spent in race mode. There’s a great deal of confidence in the team so hopefully those ingredients will add up to an inspiring weekend.”

The Tioga Downs Casino Resort 240, part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen weekend, takes the green flag Saturday at 2:05 p.m. Eastern. The race will be broadcast live in the U.S. on NBC Sports Gold’s TrackPass, while international viewers can watch via IMSA.tv. IMSA Radio will also be available at IMSA.com. NBCSN will broadcast a two-hour race recap, currently scheduled to air Wednesday, June 30 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern (check local listings).

Rebel Rock Racing Ready for Watkins Glen Return

Productive two-day test has team eager for back-to-back weekends

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (21 June 2021) – Rebel Rock Racing makes its return to historic Watkins Glen International in the four-hour Tioga Downs Casino Resort 240 on Saturday, June 26, the fourth race of the 2021 IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.

Frank DePew and Robin Liddell will drive the No. 71 Urban Grid Chevrolet Camaro GT4 at the New York track after posting a productive two-day test at the Glen recently. Rebel Rock scored a dramatic victory at Sebring earlier this year, and will look for another big result this Saturday.

“We tested at The Glen two weeks before the race,” Liddell explained. “We had a really good test and we re-familiarized ourselves to the track. There were quite a few IMSA teams there, so we were able to measure ourselves against some of the other teams. I think we’ve got a reasonably good package for the race.”

“I feel good about our test,” DePew said. “I was still learning the track when we raced there two years ago. Our test went really well, and I was able to begin to master the track a little bit more. Getting more laps in really helped me make a good jump through those two days.”

The team finished a competitive fifth in a challenging race in their last visit to the Finger Lakes circuit in 2019. DePew drove a solid opening stint in an event that included penalties, contact and a late rainstorm for Liddell and endurance driver Andrew Davis. That showing set the scene for the following weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, when Rebel Rock Racing scored its first of two 2019 victories.

DePew and Liddell will tackle the four-hour event as a duo this weekend, a similar strategy to the 2021 season opener at Daytona for the only other four-hour race on the schedule.

“I just hope it isn’t super hot,” DePew said. “I’ll be prepared to spend from 100 minutes to two hours in the car. I think we’re better prepared there than we were two years ago.”

“We’re going to run a similar strategy to what we ran at Daytona,” Liddell said. “Frank did a good job at the test. He did a really good job at The Glen two years ago, and he’s a much better driver now and is a lot more experienced. He’s also a lot quicker than he was then. He can certainly hold his own in the opening portion of the race. I think we’re in pretty good shape, and we’re looking forward to it.”

The upstate New York track is one that is a driver favorite, but the late June date can create some unique challenges for the team and drivers.

“It’s probably going to be hot and sticky,” Liddell added. “It’s going to be tough to spend lots of time in the car. But at the end of the day, I think two drivers is the best way to go. If we have a good, clean race, I think we can have a good result.”

Following the four-hour race, Rebel Rock plans to stay in place for the next event – the Sahlen’s 120, a two-hour sprint at Watkins Glen the following Friday (July 2). This replaces the cancelled event at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

“IMSA made it possible for us to stay in place in the paddock, so most of us will stay there,” Liddell said. “We can re-prep the car, depending on what’s required, and go and enjoy the local sights the area’s got to offer. It’s a nice part of the world, so we can have a nice couple of days break.”

Rebel Rock Racing is sixth in the GS point standings, 230 points behind the leaders with the revised IMSA point structure.

Our Motorsports Tennessee Lottery 250 Post Race

The Our Motorsports team had a tough day in Music City for the Tennessee Lottery 250. The No.02 of Brett Moffitt suffered an equipment malfunction which led to a 23rd place finish. The No.23 of Natalie Decker started 36th and battled hard for a 26th place finish in her 3rd Xfinity start.

The 188 lap, 250 mile race began with Moffitt qualifying 18th and Decker in 36th. During the first stage both Our Motorsports cars remained consistent in their starting positions, resulting in both an 18th and 36th place finish at the end of stage one. Both cars came in for four tires, fuel and adjustments. Moffitt reported that his car was free off the corners during the first stage.

At the start of stage two, Moffitt rolled off 10th with Decker behind him in 30th.

Moffitt remained in the top 15 for several laps during the stage, but by lap 80 Moffitt was in the 17th position. Decker was racing in the 33rd position at the end of the stage.

When the green flag came back out during the final stage, Moffitt started 16th and Decker in 30th. Moffitt was running 18th before suffering an equipment malfunction that caused him to go two laps down. By the time the checkered flag waved, Moffitt was 23rd and Decker was 26th.

Decker took to Instagram after the race stating that she learned a lot and had fun driving the No.23. Decker mentioned that she didn’t have a lot of experience at tracks like Nashville and was happy to see improvements with every lap. She will be back in the No.23 July 3rd at Road of America for her fourth Xfinity start.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series returns to action next weekend at Pocono Raceway in Long Pound, PA. The Pocono Green 225 Recycled is set for Sunday, June 27 at 12 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

Rare Engine Issue Relegates DiBenedetto to Finish 24th

Matt DiBenedetto and the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane team had a top-10 run going in Sunday’s Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway only to experience a rare engine issue that led to a 24th-place finish.

DiBenedetto qualified 11th for the Cup Series’ first race at the 1.33-mile concrete Nashville Superspeedway, which was hosting the first Cup race in Music City since 1984.

Running before a sellout crowd, DiBenedetto immediately was on the march. He was up to seventh place after five laps and in the top five by Lap Eight.

He continued to run inside the top 10 for the entire first Stage and ended that 90-lap segment in 10th place, despite making a pit stop that dropped him to 12th place just prior to the end of the Stage.

When five drivers who finished the first Stage ahead of him made their pit stops, he moved up to fifth place for the ensuing restart. Then just as the second Stage got under way, the engine in the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang developed a miss, and DiBenedetto began dropping back.

Despite being down on power, he remained on the lead lap for much of the remainder of the race and was able to run respectable speeds at times. With just over 50 laps left to go in the 300-lapper, he fell off the lead lap and crossed the finish line in 25th place. He moved up one spot in the finishing order, and gained one Stage point, when Chase Elliott was disqualified.

“We definitely had a car that was capable of finishing in the top 10,” DiBenedetto said. “It drove well. The crew had good stops, and [crew chief Jonathan] Hassler made good calls on the pit box.

“Everybody did a good job, but we had the engine issue.”

He said the team quickly changed spark plug wires and plug to no avail. “It must have been something internal,” he said.

DiBenedetto said that while his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang was fast at Nashville there’s still a bit more work to be done.

“We are still missing a little bit of speed to be able to compete with the top cars,” he said. “But there are a lot of teams in the garage saying the same thing right now.

“We’ll just move on from [Nashville] and keep working hard.”

Sunday’s finish dropped DiBenedetto two positions in the Cup Series standings to 19th, 30 points behind 16th place.

Next up for the Motorcraft/Quick Lane team is a double-header at Pocono Raceway, with a 130-lap, 325-mile race on Saturday (June 26) followed by a 140-lap, 350-miler on Sunday.

● Caution was displayed for a single-car accident on lap one. Busch restarted first on lap five but fell back to second on lap six.
● Green-flag stops started taking place on lap 40.
● Busch reported that the car’s handling was on the loose side getting into and exiting the turns and then tight in the center. He made a green-flag pit stop on lap 44 for four tires, fuel and a round of air pressure adjustments. While he was on pit road, the caution was displayed for a single-car incident. Busch exited pit road and was able to stay on the lead lap. Once NASCAR sorted the lineup, Busch was scored in first place.
● Green-flag racing resumed on lap 54. Busch battled but eventually dropped back a spot to second.
● The No. 18 PEDIGREE Foundation Toyota started to drop a few spots as the stage continued and was scored in sixth place when caution was displayed on lap 78.
● The team used the break to make major changes, adjusting the chassis and air pressures while changing four tires and adding fuel. Busch lined up ninth for the restart on lap 85.
● Busch raced back to the top-five to finish Stage 1 in fifth place.

Stage 2 Recap (Laps 91-185):

● Busch started second and finished fifth.
● The team stayed out at the end of Stage 1, which placed Busch in second place for the restart.
● During the next several laps Busch reported that the loose-tight-loose handling condition that plagued the car in the turns continued to be a problem.
● Caution waved on lap 132 for a single-car accident. Busch was scored in sixth place.
● The two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion reported that the car continued to handle tight in the center of the turns and that it had no grip at the exits. The team changed four tires, added fuel and made another round of chassis and air pressure adjustments. Busch lined up third for the restart.
● Caution was displayed on lap 173 for yet another single-car incident. Busch was scored in fourth place.
● The team made a stop for four tires, fuel and some air pressure adjustments. Busch lined up fifth for the restart on lap 180 and maintained the position to the conclusion of the final stage.

Final Stage Recap (Laps 186-300):

● Busch started third and finished 11th.
● The handling on the PEDIGREE Foundation Toyota continued to be problematic in the final stage. Busch steadily lost positions and was ninth by the time caution waved on lap 196. The issue continued once green-flag racing resumed, and Busch really started to lose position.
● The Las Vegas native was scored in 26th place on lap 210.
● Caution was displayed on lap 217. Busch made a trip to pit road for tires, fuel and adjustments. During the caution the team discovered that the right-front tire had started to go flat, which was the likely cause of Busch’s dramatic drop through the field.
● Busch battled during the next several laps to try and make up track position, and the team continued to try a variety of adjustments.
● On lap 227, Busch reported the car’s handling had shifted to being very tight. Again, the team tried a variety of adjustments to help the handling situation.
● As the race continued Busch was able to move through the field and was back among the top-20 at lap 238. He continued those efforts to the conclusion, finishing the day in 11th place.

Kyle Busch, driver of the No. 18 PEDIGREE Foundation Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing:

“Our qualifying result was way better than expected. I didn’t expect to qualify that well, based on what we learned in practice. We completely wholesaled everything and changed it all before qualifying, so we didn’t know what to expect with our PEDIGREE Camry. Obviously thought we would be better than 11th. We have work to do.”
