  • Moffitt on Pocono: “My luck at Pocono so far hasn’t been great, but we have had a solid season to date and a lot of speed so I feel better than ever heading into Friday. Era Motorsport Returns to America for Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., (June 22, 2021) – Three months have passed since Era Motorsport finished second at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, and since then, the LMP2 sports car racing team has made their European Le Mans Series debut, already completing the first three races of the season. This week, the Indianapolis-based team travels to Watkins Glen, New York for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The team secured the class victory at the Rolex 24 At Daytona, followed by the second-place Sebring finish. The two strong results put the team in second in the Michelin Endurance Cup, the four-race endurance points battle within the full season championship. Since the 2020 Six Hours of the Glen was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the team’s rookie season, this weekend will be Era’s first time racing in the fan-favorite event.

Endurance addition Ryan Dalziel will race alongside full-season pilots Kyle Tilley and Dwight Merriman in the No. 18 Oreca LMP2 car. Thirty-nine other entries are slated to compete in the six-hour event at Watkins Glen International Raceway, a permanent road course located in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.

In preparation for the big race, the team has recently completed private tests at the 3.4-mile, 11-turn circuit. This will also be the first IMSA event since early 2020 that sports car racing fans will be allowed back in the paddock as well as the pre-race open-grid fan walk.

For fans not attending the event, the race will air in the United States live on NBC Sports Gold’s TRACKPASS streaming service on Sunday, June 27 from 10:30 AM to 4:40 AM Eastern, or tape-delayed on NBCSN starting at 7:00 PM ET. Fans outside the U.S. can likely watch on imsa.tv or check listings by country on the IMSA International Coverage page. IMSA Radio will also be offering live coverage of the race, steaming worldwide for free.

Kyle Tilley
I’m super excited for the Six Hours of the Glen! It was the event I met Ryan Dalziel at in 2013, as well as the site of my first event in the United States, so I feel like it’s come full circle! We had a really successful test there a few weeks ago, so confidence is high! That combined with some of what we learned in ELMS, I think we are looking very strong!

Dwight Merriman
I’m feeling confident about our standing coming into Watkins Glen International. We’ve really been putting in the work to consistently improve where we can, and after two strong podium finishes in IMSA this year, I think that consistency will only move us forward.

Ryan Dalziel
After a win and second place in the first two endurance races in IMSA, we are ready to continue that run and hopefully with a finish at the top step. We have learned a lot while racing over in Europe about the Oreca LMP2 which I hope translates over to the IMSA program. Love my Era Motorsport family and I’m ready for more success together.

About Era Motorsport
Era Motorsport was formed in 2018 with the idea of providing unmatched excellence in historic racing. Just two years later, the team expanded to the world of professional sport car racing, fielding an Oreca 07 in the prolific IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In 2021, the team went on to win at the iconic Rolex 24 At Daytona, in what was their second attempt competing in the event. Motorsport isn’t just a hobby, it is a way of life: a passion that is in the team’s blood. Whether you find us in the IMSA WeatherTech paddock with modern prototypes or chasing down lap records in our fully restored classic sports cars, or even globetrotting to experience historic F1 at some of the world’s most iconic circuits, Era Motorsport has something for everyone. In 2021, the team will return to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the full LMP2 season and also contest in the full seasons of the Asian Le Mans championship and European Le Mans Series.

CORVETTE RACING AT WATKINS GLEN: Glad to be Back

  • First race in two years at Watkins Glen for Corvette Racing
  • Debut at The Glen for mid-engine Corvette C8.Rs
  • Three consecutive class podiums at The Glen for Corvette Racing in GTLM

DETROIT (June 22, 2021) – To all those at and around Watkins Glen International, Corvette Racing has a message:

We missed you… A LOT!

North America’s longest-running sports car program is back at The Glen – along with the rest of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship – for this weekend’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. It’s the first of back-to-back weekends at the circuit for IMSA teams and a trip that Corvette Racing is relishing.

The next two weeks – including a two-hour, 40-minute sprint race on July 2 – present an opportunity to make up for lost time after last year’s Six Hours was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That meant Corvette Racing didn’t have the chance to show off the mid-engine Corvette C8.R during its debut season.

Now, the Corvette quartet gets a chance to double its pleasure with more than 8.5 hours of racing during the next two weekends around historic 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course that has played host to some of the most famous faces, manufacturers and championships in the last 60 years.

Corvette Racing added itself to the honor roll of winners at The Glen with a victory in 2014. There have been plenty of near-misses since with three consecutive podium finishes from 2017-2019. The latest has a greater since of irony this season as Garcia and Jan Magnussen finished second in GTLM after a titanic late-race battle with Tandy, of all people.

Chevrolet on Display at Watkins Glen
In addition to happenings on the racetrack at Watkins Glen, fans will have no shortage of things to see and do from Chevrolet’s automotive product line. That’s because the Chevrolet Motorsports Display will be full of Chevrolet vehicles that spectators can learn more about throughout the weekend.

The Chevrolet Motorsports Display opens at 9 a.m. from Friday plus 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday in the fan midway. Numerous Chevrolet vehicles and other highlights include:

• A Corvette Racing C8.R showcar
• A 2022 Corvette Stingray IMSA GTLM Championship Edition coupe
• Additional Chevrolet products such as the Camaro Coupe 2SS, Blazer RS, Silverado Trail Boss, and Tahoe RST
• A special display with various Corvette Racing artifacts
• An opportunity to receive a Corvette T-shirt

The Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen begins at 10:40 a.m. ET on Sunday, June 27. Same-day coverage will be available from 7-10 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Live streaming video on Trackpass via NBC Sports Gold and the NBC Sports App begins at 10:35 a.m. ET. Live audio coverage of qualifying and the race from IMSA Radio is available on IMSA.com, XM 202 and SiriusXM Online 992.

ANTONIO GARCIA, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “The Glen is one of my favorite tracks. I really missed the chance to get to know the C8.R around there. The previous car was really good there and we had some great races. It’s the same feeling I have about Le Mans; we missed it last year too, and these are two places where I’m looking forward to driving the C8.R around. Two consecutive races at The Glen will be interesting, but it’s good preparation for the summer and what we have coming up in our championship.”

JORDAN TAYLOR, NO. 3 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Watkins Glen is a staple of road racing in North America. All the drivers and teams love going there. It has such a huge fanbase for road racing. It was a huge loss for us last year. It’s one of the coolest tracks in America and has that old-school feel that a driver enjoys and fans love to watch. It always offers great racing, and the Six Hours is a classic event on our calendar. It’s also another endurance race that we can get under our belt before we go to Le Mans, so it checks off a lot of the boxes that we missed out on last year.”

TOMMY MILNER, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “Watkins Glen is one of the classic American racetracks, and the Six Hours is one of the crown jewels of sports car racing worldwide. To miss that one last year was a big bummer. We’re all excited to get back there this year and go for it with this new C8.R. We haven’t raced there with this car, so we’re looking forward to seeing what it can do. The C8.R should be pretty well-suited to a track like Watkins Glen. It’s a pretty fast and high-speed circuit. I think one place we felt like we struggled with the C7.R was the Carousel coming out of the Bus Stop. We’re excited to see what this new Corvette can do.”

NICK TANDY, NO. 4 MOBIL 1/SiriusXM CHEVROLET CORVETTE C8.R: “We missed being at Watkins Glen last year. It’s a circuit that absolutely should suit this C8.R. It’s fast, flowing and a high-downforce circuit. It’s just great to drive on. I can’t wait to see what the Corvette is like around there. The last time we visited The Glen, I had a titanic tussle with Antonio and the No. 3 Corvette. It was a duel to the end! I’m looking forward to being on the other side, going back to back at Watkins Glen but this time in a different car!”

Ford Performance NASCAR: Harvick Going For Pocono Repeat This Weekend

FORD PERFORMANCE NASCAR: POCONO ADVANCE

Pocono Raceway will be hosting all three major NASCAR Series this weekend, which is highlighted by back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series events on Saturday and Sunday. This will mark the second straight year for the Pocono doubleheader, which saw Ford drivers Kevin Harvick (Cup) and Chase Briscoe (NXS) come away with wins in 2020.

This Week’s Schedule:

Saturday, June 26 – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, 12 Noon ET (FS1)
Saturday, June 26 – NASCAR Cup Series, 3 p.m. (NBCSN)
Sunday, June 27 – NASCAR XFINITY Series, 12 Noon ET (NBCSN)
Sunday, June 27 – NASCAR Cup Series, 3:30 p.m. ET (NBCSN)

FORD IN THE NASCAR CUP SERIES AT POCONO

  • Ford has 24 all-time series wins at Pocono.
  • Chris Buescher (2016), Ryan Blaney (2017) and Kevin Harvick (2020) have Ford wins at Pocono.
  • Bill Elliott got Ford’s first series win at Pocono in 1985 (season sweep).

FORD IN THE NASCAR XFINITY SERIES AT POCONO

  • Ford is the first manufacturer with multiple Pocono wins in the series.
  • Ford has 3 victories in 5 all-time series starts.
  • Brad Keselowski (2017), Cole Custer (2019) and Chase Briscoe (2020) have track wins.

FORD IN THE GANDER OUTDOORS TRUCK SERIES AT POCONO

  • Ford has one series win at Pocono (Ryan Blaney, 2013).
  • This will mark the 12th series race at the track.
  • Todd Gilliand has finished in the top 10 in all three of his Pocono starts.

HARVICK LOOKING TO DEFEND POCONO WIN

Kevin Harvick is the defending champion of this weekend’s first Cup race at Pocono after he won for the first time at the track last year. The Stewart-Haas driver led the final 17 laps to register his third win of the season as six Ford drivers finished in the top 10. With Pocono now scratched off his winless list, the only active tracks on the circuit where Harvick hasn’t won are the new road courses, including the Charlotte Roval, Daytona Road Course, COTA, Bristol Dirt, and Nashville Superspeedway.

BLANEY GETS FIRST CUP VICTORY

Ryan Blaney earned his first NASCAR Cup Series four years ago at Pocono Raceway, giving the Wood Brothers their 99th all-time series win. Blaney held off Kevin Harvick over the final seven laps to win the Pocono 400 after overcoming a loose wheel only 19 laps into the event. He found himself in position to win after the caution came out with 19 laps to go. Kyle Busch opted to stay out while all of the other contenders behind him pitted, including Blaney who got four fresh tires and restarted fourth. A major battle between Busch and Blaney resulted, but the newer tires proved to be too much as Blaney eventually got by with nine laps to go. He couldn’t breathe easily, however, as Harvick started to reel him in, but could never pull alongside to challenge.

BUESCHER JOINS FIRST-TIME WINNERS CLUB AT POCONO

Chris Buescher is another Ford driver who posted his first NASCAR Cup Series win at Pocono when he won the rain-shortened Pennsylvania 400 in 2016. Buescher led the final 12 laps and qualified for the playoffs as the scheduled 160-lap race was called after 138 circuits. It represented the second series win and first playoff qualification for Front Row Motorsports, which Buescher drove for in 2016 after the organization entered into an alliance with Roush Fenway Racing.

ELLIOTT SWEEPS IN 1985

Ford reached victory lane at Pocono Raceway in the NASCAR Cup Series for the first time on June 9, 1985 when Bill Elliott beat Harry Gant to win the Van Scoy Diamond Mine 500. Elliott was able to pass Gant with 11 laps remaining, shortly after a restart, to claim Ford’s first win at the facility. Elliott, who also started on the pole, was helped by four cautions over the final 25 laps and won for the sixth time as he led 32 of the 200 circuits. It marked the front end of what would eventually be a season sweep for Elliott at Pocono as he won a few weeks later on July 21.

KULWICKI’S FINAL WIN

Nobody knew it at the time, but when Alan Kulwicki won the Champion Spark Plug 500 on June 14, 1992 it marked the final victory of his career. Kulwicki, who was voted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019, passed Bill Elliott with 11 laps remaining to cap a day that saw 15 cars drop out before the checkered flag flew, including 11 engine failures. In a precursor to what happened a few months later at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Kulwicki and Elliott battled down the stretch as they exchanged the lead multiple times over the final 25 laps. Kulwicki passed Elliott for the top spot on lap 181, but traffic slowed him down to the point that five laps later the two swapped positions. Mark Martin made it a three-way battle, but Kulwicki ultimately prevailed as he got by both drivers on lap 190 and never looked back. Kulwicki, who won five series races overall, went on to win the championship later that year over fellow Ford drivers Elliott and Davey Allison.

WALLACE HOT STREAK

Rusty Wallace was in his first season with Ford after car owner Roger Penske decided to switch from Pontiac for the 1994 NASCAR Cup Series season. That decision paid immediate dividends as Wallace went on to win eight times that year, including the UAW-GM Teamwork 500 at Pocono on June 12. The victory, his second straight in a streak that eventually grew to three with another triumph at Michigan a few days later, was a dramatic one as he passed Dale Earnhardt on the final lap. The two waged a major battle as Earnhardt grabbed the lead with five laps to go, only to see Wallace fight back after the white flag flew to win by 0.28 seconds.

Rossi rejoins Taylor, Albuquerque and the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 team for the third endurance battle of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series

Brownsburg, Ind. (June 22, 2021) – The current IMSA WeatherTech Championship points leaders will look to extend their lead this weekend at Watkins Glen International for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen. Alexander Rossi will return to the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 alongside full-time co-drivers Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque at the 3.4-mile, 11-turn permanent road course located in Watkins Glen, New York.

In addition to winning this notable six-hour endurance race back in 2011 from the pole, the Wayne Taylor Racing team has secured five podium finishes, eight top-five finishes and led 249 laps throughout their 13 years of competing at the historic circuit.

The No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura ARX-05 team will also be looking to achieve another endurance victory after winning the Rolex 24 at DAYTONA earlier this year, its fourth in five years at the season opener. With 27 points, they currently lead the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup DPi Championship over the #55 Mazda Motorsports DPi by a slim 4 point margin.

This will be Ricky Taylor’s third event at Watkins Glen driving an Acura ARX-05, and his eighth Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen overall. His resume includes one win, one pole, three podium and six top-five finishes at the six-hour endurance race.

“So far our season has been right on schedule,” said Ricky Taylor. “The team is executing well. We survived Detroit with a strong result at a track that was earmarked as one of the more difficult races for us. Now we go to Watkins Glen where we should have a very strong performance. It’s ben ten years since the No. 10 Konica Minolta team’s last win there, so it would be sweet to get another.”

Filipe Albuquerque hopes to achieve another victory at Watkins Glen International after achieving back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017.

“Watkins Glen is a track that suits our car,” said Filipe Albuquerque. “I’m looking forward to it after being really happy of our result at Detroit. It was not a track for us, and it was a bit obvious that we did not have the same pace of the Cadillacs, but we finished with a third-place finish. We are here to win races and Watkins Glen is a track that suits our car. I hope we have the advantage in terms of speed compared to the Cadillacs and we can grab the win. It’s not always the fastest car that wins, but the team that has the least number of mistakes and leads the last lap. I’m excited about Watkins Glen especially because we had a very successful test here recently.”

Alexander Rossi joins the No. 10 Konica Minolta Acura team after driving at the Rolex 24 at DAYTONA and Twelve Hours of Sebring. While Rossi has not competed at Watkins Glen in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the American won from the pole position during the 2017 NTT IndyCar Series season.

“Thrilled to get the opportunity to go back and race at Watkins Glen as it is one of my favorite tracks in the world,” said Rossi. “I wasn’t originally planning on joining WTR and Acura for this event, but I will do everything in my power to assist them on and off the track to ensure they continue to be in control of this championship.”

“The Six Hours of Watkins Glen is always one of my favorite races,” mentioned Wayne Taylor. I never won there as a driver which is disappointing, but I’ve won it as a team owner. It’s a real road course like the old days in Formula 1. We had a relatively good race in Detroit, but I’m feeling much more confident going into this one. More high speed on a track which is good for our car. We’re bringing Rossi back on board for this race, under normal circumstances we wouldn’t bring a third driver, but since it could be hot, we’ll need someone else. Ricky and Filipe do such a good job together. I can’t wait to get back.”

On-track action for the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen begins this Friday at 4:20 p.m. ET. Qualifying for the main event is set for Saturday, June 26th at 11:50 a.m. ET and will be broadcast live on IMSA.TV. Sunday’s green flag for the main event will wave at 10:40 a.m. ET, with coverage beginning on IMSA.TV at 10:35 a.m. ET – 4:40pm. ET. NBC Sports will air a tape delay from 7:00 p.m. ET – 10:00 p.m. ET on Sunday evening.

Richard Childress Racing Announces Multi-Year Partnership with Neschen and Smooth Finish

Neschen and Smooth Finish to serve as Official Partners of the RCR Graphics Center Powered by Roland

WELCOME, NC (June 22, 2021) – Today, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) unveiled a multi-year partnership with Neschen, the self-adhesive media, laminators and industrial coating solutions manufacturing company, and Smooth Finish, their North American master distributor for laminators. Neschen and Smooth Finish will become Official Partners of the RCR Graphics Center Powered by Roland and help elevate the in-house full-service design and production facility to the next level. Neschen and Smooth Finish will also serve as an associate partner for RCR’s No. 2 NASCAR Xfinity Series Chevrolet Camaro for select races later this year.

RCR Graphics Center Powered by Roland, which handles design, printing and installation for all of RCR’s business needs and wrap schemes that fans see on the race cars at the track every week, will be able to continue to raise the bar of their high-standard wrap quality through the new partnership. With the addition of Neschen and Smooth Finish laminators, the Graphics Center will be able to finish their products more quickly with a higher level of efficiency for final design touches after being printed on the Center’s Roland machines.

Neschen and Smooth Finish will also partner with RCR Graphics to showcase their laminators and its technology to prospective and current customers and dealers by hosting groups at the Graphics Center to see the equipment in use.

“Our partnership with Neschen and Smooth Finish will play a vital role in overall efficiency in production at the shop,” said Nick Woodward, manager of the RCR Graphics Center Powered by Roland. “The laminators add the finishing touches that our wraps need in a reliable manner, which then helps us get the wraps on our race cars or projects back to our customers at a quicker rate.”

Neschen and Smooth Finish first partnered together in late 2020, as Smooth Finish became the German-based laminator business’ US distribution and technical support partner.

“Neschen is excited to partner with Richard Childress Racing, one of the premier, most iconic teams in the sport,” said Darren Speizer, managing director of Neschen. “The team at Richard Childress are true professionals, in every sense of the word, and require best-in-class solutions to meet their demanding schedules and needs. We are honored that RCR recognized the quality and performance that Neschen and Smooth Finish bring to the table, and choose to forge this amazing partnership.”

“I have worked with and supported the graphics department at Richard Childress Racing for many years,” said Don Bahr, owner of Smooth Finish. “Upon collaborating with Neschen last year, I immediately recognized that bringing these parties together would prove beneficial to everyone and deliver RCR Graphics the premier finishing solutions they have been searching for. In RCR and Neschen, we have two organizations that rely on the highest quality and speed every day, and together with the support and experience of Smooth Finish LLC, we definitely have a winning team!”

3 Easy Tips to Be a Better Driver

We all want to be better drivers, both for the sake of our safety and maybe a little for bragging rights. Unfortunately, in the real world, there are no driving hacks or boosts like in a video game that might give us better speed or control, and we have to level up our driving skills with time, experience, and knowledge. Here are a few things you can do right now to be a better driver for your own and others’ sake.

Focus

This may sound like fundamentals, but one of the most important tools in your arsenal when it comes to skilled driving is your ability to focus. Distracted driving statistics show that in 2015, 3477 individuals were killed in car accidents tied to distracted drivers. This shows that not paying attention to the road is a major issue. Naturally, distracted driving relates largely to cell phone use while driving.

It’s important to have your full attention on the road at all times. Being distracted (even if your cell phone isn’t in your hand) can lead to an accident in the blink of an eye if you’re not paying attention to your surroundings – other drivers, pedestrians, animals on the road, and the list goes on. Having your full focus where it needs to be at all times will keep your reflexes sharp and your mind ready for anything that might happen.

Know the Rules

Knowing the rules of the road makes it far easier to follow them, it’s as simple as that. Having a clear understanding (and experience) of what you can or cannot do under various circumstances will help you out in situations where you might otherwise be stressed or react reflexively. Understand when you have right of way, when you don’t, and how to handle certain situations – this is something that mainly comes from experience on the road but can be helped along by making sure you actually studied for your permit. Understand and follow road signs, adhere to the speed limit, and for goodness sake, use your turn signal.

Get to Know Your Car

Cars can all handle very differently, and it’s important that you’re actually comfortable and familiar with your own car. If you’re fresh on the road or have a new car, make sure to spend some time getting to know how it functions. Practice emergency breaks, take it for a spin in the rain and you’ll get to know how to react (and have full faith in yourself and your vehicle) if you were to actually end up in a sticky situation.

Truthfully, the only way to achieve this in its full capacity is to drive and drive often. The more practice on the road you get, the more stressful situations you live through, and the more experience you have with other drivers on the road, the better you will become. Trust in yourself, stay calm and focused on the road at all times, and keep your car well maintained, and you’ll be leveling up in no time.
