Greg Van Alst takes an upbeat approach to Kansas Speedway debut

KANSAS CITY, Kan: Greg Van Alst may not have a lot to show when it comes to finishing positions this season in the ARCA Menards Series, but that is a statistic he is determined to change in Saturday afternoon’s Dutch Boy 150 at Kansas Speedway.

The 2019 ARCA CRA champion invades Kansas after turning in another stunning performance last weekend at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway – only to see his impressive showing end 15 laps from the finish after being eliminated by another competitor while running second in the General Tire 200.

While frustrated with the results of his return to the ARCA Menards Series in nearly two decades, Van Alst and his Jim Long-led team are also encouraged by the performance of their No. 35 CB Fabricating Chevrolet.

They, like everyone else though hope their luck will finally change in Kansas City.

“I’m extremely proud of Jim (Long) and the entire Greg Van Alst Motorsports team for their hard work this season and especially at Talladega last weekend,” said Van Alst.

“I think we proved that our Daytona performance wasn’t a fluke – we just, unfortunately, did not have the luck we needed to get to the checkered flag.
“Still, we are bringing fast race cars to the track and I think Kansas will be no different.”

Van Alst hasn’t competed on an intermediate track since 2002 when he last raced at Chicagoland (Ill.) Speedway and earned a career-best 15th place finish for Locke Motorsports. Now, 19 years later, Van Alst will race at Kansas – a 1.5-mile speedway with similar characteristics to Chicagoland — eyeing his first career top-10 finish.

“I can’t remember everything about Kentucky and Chicagoland in 2002, but I know I had a lot of fun,” added Van Alst. “The series and even race cars have changed a lot since then though. Thankfully, I have Jim and even Chad (Bryant of Chad Bryant Racing) whom we bought our intermediate car from have been a huge asset.

“I feel we are bringing an extremely competitive intermediate car and have the chance of earning our best finish of the year and give us some much-welcomed momentum into the summer stretch.”

With practice on deck, this weekend at Kansas, Van Alst and his team have a strict agenda.

“We are going to be pretty aggressive during practice,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of time, but we need to make sure our No. 35 CB Fabricating Chevrolet is handling well where we can get some good track position for early in the race.

“We have to stay on the lead lap during the first segment. We’ll make adjustments and just go hard the second half of the race and hope for the best. If all goes well, we will take what we learned at Kansas and apply it to Charlotte and see if we can’t continue to turn heads this season.”

CB Fabricating, a longtime partner with Greg Van Alst Motorsports has boosted its commitment to the team and will continue its role as the primary marketing partner of Van Alst’s No. 35 Chevrolet.

Headquartered in Anderson, Ind., CB Fabricating offers a complete list of fabricating from design, laser cutting, CNC punching, forming, welding, powder coating, and assembly.

Their 26,000 square foot facility allows them to service the needs of many different industries. Everything from the Automotive, agricultural, aquatic, medical, transportation, electrical enclosures, and much more.

“Without the support of Chris Barkdull and everyone at CB Fabricating, this chance to elevate our team to the next level would not have been possible,” added Van Alst. “We have set goals for ourselves this season and I believe we are aligning ourselves with the right people who can allow us to not only continue to turn heads at Kansas but throughout the 2021 season.”

In addition to CB Fabricating, Top Choice Fence, Norton Transport, KRJ Race Products and Lintz Creative will serve as associate marketing partners for Van Alst’s sixth career ARCA start.

Additional specifics on Greg Van Alst Motorsports’ 2021 ARCA Menards Series program are forthcoming, including a detailed series schedule.

Things You Want to Check When Buying a Used Car

Are you thinking or planning to get a used car? If yes, then it’s a great idea. It helps you save a lot of money compared to if you are buying a new car.

However, getting a used car comes with its hassles. Not to worry, here you’ll find a list of things to check when you want to buy a used car.

Review the Vehicle’s History

Reviewing to know a vehicle’s history reveals a lot. This helps you decide whether or not you’re going for the vehicle. How do you check your vehicle’s history? Look up the vehicle’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to examine the car’s history.

The VIN comprises 17 numbers and letters usually found on the front corner where the windshield and dashboard meet or on the driver’s door. When a car’s VIN is looked up, it reveals car registration details, recalls, theft, damage, and more. You can even do a VIN check to find insurance rates.

There are bodies like Carfax that used the VIN to know accident history if the used car had been flooded or not. The VIN is unique to each vehicle. Make sure you review the VIN history to know the car’s past before buying a used car. By doing this, you avoid purchasing a lemon.

Inspect for Rust and Paint Damages

Look around the car with eyes open to catch rust and paint damage. Even though minor rust patches are easily repairable, this may be a pointer to halt purchase if you encounter significant rust damage.

On the other hand, you should inspect whether the painting on the car you intend to buy is still looking good. Check thoroughly for chipped paint and body filler under the color, hiding any significant damage. Note that a car with a bad paint job will cost you additional money to fix.

Scrutinize the car’s undercarriage to see if the vehicle is experiencing rust. Most vehicles that have been flooded have problems with rust. When a vehicle has a problem with rust or a bad paint job, there will be additional costs of fixing it.

Examine the Vehicle’s Frame

Always check the vehicle frame to see if the car has no problems with its stands, trying to see how the door is attached to the edge. Accidents could damage the vehicle’s structure and distort the ideal frame.

If you notice any significant damage to the car’s frame, you should let the car go. That may be a substantial sign that all is not well with the vehicle and you might end up not enjoying it.

Check the Engine and Other Components Under the Hood

Before doing this, please make sure the engine is off and cool. Look out for oil leaks, coolant leakage, and burnt oil smell. It’s also essential, if you can, to check the oil with a dipstick for low oil levels and dirty oil or oil mixed with coolant. A vital action you should do is to start the car engine when it’s cold. That way, you’ll be able to catch any battery problems. A bad/old battery will need a boost to start after it cools. Take note also of blue smoke and loud sounds when the engine comes on; these are red flags. A licensed technician can help you do all this. For example, the Peugeot Mechanic Servicing provides services for Peugeot vehicles in Brisbane.

Scan the Car Electronics

Verify the car electronics such as the air condition, radio, various meters like the odometer, the engine rev, the engine temperature work properly. If all these things have defects, don’t buy.

Use the Odometer to Confirm Car Mileage

The odometer measures the distance the car has covered. It is important to confirm the miles the car has covered. The larger the number, the more care you should take in buying the car. Why? There is more wear and tear on older engines. When you look up the VIN, you see the actual distance traveled by the car.

Check Vehicle Upholstery

Torn upholstery is something you should avoid when inspecting your used cars in sacramento. Examine the seats thoroughly. Because torn seats, damaged headrest, or other damaged upholstery means additional costs spent on the vehicle.

It Is Important to Test Drive the Car

After all the checks, it is crucial to test drive the car you want to buy. Test driving ensures that you know what faults are available in the vehicle. When you try to drive, a lot of hidden defects show up.

No matter the tests and inspections you have carried out on your car, test drive the vehicle to know what exactly is wrong with the car.

Buy Only from Trustworthy Used Car Dealers

Buying from trustworthy car dealers is the best way to get your used vehicles. Search for car dealers that have a reputation for selling good used cars.

Conclusion

If the precautions mentioned above are taken before buying a used car, you get good value for your money. A bonus tip is to go to your dealer with a mechanic to help run the inspection better.

Spire Motorsports, Fraternal Order of Eagles to Honor Mother’s Day with Robert Pressley Throwback Paintscheme

CONCORD, N.C. (April 29, 2021) – Spire Motorsports and the Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) will honor Mother’s Day with a commemorative Robert Pressley throwback paint scheme aboard Justin Haley’s No. 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE during the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR at Darlington Raceway.

Haley’s Spire Motorsports entry will closely resemble the No. 77 machine Pressley raced in 2001 for team owner Doug Bawel. Pressley logged 205 NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) starts from 1994-2002, earning five top-five and 11 top-10 finishes. His final start in NASCAR’s premiere series came at the 2002 Daytona 500 where he finished 22nd.

The Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR is beloved by the entire NASCAR industry for paying homage through special paint schemes to NASCAR Hall of Famers, legends, team owners and valuable sponsors across the history of the sport.

“The Jasper car stood out at a lot of places,” said Pressley. “I think the fans really enjoy seeing those old paint schemes because they bring back some memories. I’m not saying that’s when the real racing was, but one thing we can all agree on – through the late ‘90s and early 2000s, we packed every grandstand we went to, so somebody was doing something right back in that era. I really feel fortunate that I got to race during the heyday of NASCAR. The Pettys, the Pearsons, Yarboroughs and Allisons built the foundation for us and it seemed like we were the ones who capitalized off of it.

“Darlington has a lot of great memories for me, but it’s one of the places that I believe if you can ever win a NASCAR race … you want to win at Daytona or Darlington. I think Darlington would have been my favorite place to win.”

Meanwhile, Haley’s No. 77 Chevrolet will carry the names of hundreds of mothers, incorporated across the hood and decklid of his machine. The names were gathered and submitted to honor the mothers of members of both the F.O.E. and Spire Motorsports.

For more than a century, the second Sunday in May has been set aside to honor mothers everywhere – and it all started with a push from the Fraternal Order of Eagles. On February 7, 1904, Fraternal Order of Eagles Past Grand Worthy President Frank E. Hering made a public plea to recognize mothers everywhere. A decade later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation making Mother’s Day a reality.

The achievement remains one of the most significant milestones in the history of the organization. From preparing brunch to buying cards and flowers, the spirit of Hering and the F.O.E. lives on through America’s actions each Mother’s Day.

“The F.O.E. is incredibly proud to continue our relationship with Spire Motorsports by honoring Mothers around the world at Darlington,” said Dave Smith, F.O.E. Grand Worthy President. “As proud founders of Mother’s Day, we’re grateful to have this opportunity to share our history and continue to work with the amazing people at Spire who shares our values and commitment to service.”

Haley’s entry will also carry the name of Smith’s late wife, Frances Smith, over the passenger side door.

The Smiths immigrated from their home of Scotland to Canada in 1973. They began their relationship with the F.O.E. in 1980 and continued their service to the community and the F.O.E. in the years that followed. Mr. and Mrs. Smith traveled North America together promoting the F.O.E. and raising money for a variety of charities. She was a proud mother of two, grandmother of four and great grandmother of one who loved spending time with her family whenever possible.

The Goodyear 400 will also mark Haley’s first NCS start at the “Track Too Tough to Tame.” In three previous Xfinity starts at Darlington Raceway, the Winamac, Ind., native has earned one pole, one top 10 and hasn’t finished worse than 13th.

“I’m stoked about the opportunity to celebrate Mother’s Day at Darlington with the support of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and pair that with a really awesome Robert Pressley throwback paint scheme,” commented Haley. “Darlington is such an iconic race track and to this day, still lives up to both of its famous nicknames. You can call it ‘Too Tough To Tame’ or the ‘Lady in Black’ but those nicknames apply the same today as they did back in the ‘60s. The layout is so unique and the speeds are just incredible. it’s an intimidating place but I’ve run pretty good at Darlington all three times I’ve raced the Xfinity car there.

“I’m also honored to carry the names of hundreds of mothers whose impact and influence are felt exponentially across the F.O.E. and Spire Motorsports. Without those amazing women, none of this happens.”

The Goodyear 400 from Darlington Raceway will be televised live on FS1 Sunday, May 9 beginning at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The 12th of 36 races on the 2021 NCS schedule will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

About the Fraternal Order of Eagles …
The F.O.E. was founded in February 1898 by six theatre owners gathered in a Seattle shipyard to discuss a musician’s strike. After addressing the matter, they agreed to “bury the hatchet” and form “The Order of Good Things.” As numbers grew, members selected the Bald Eagle as the official emblem and changed the name to “The Fraternal Order of Eagles.” The women’s auxiliary traces its roots to 1927. The Fraternal Order of Eagles includes nearly 800,000 members and more than 1,500 locations across the United States and Canada. About Spire Motorsports …
Spire Motorsports was established in 2018 and is co-owned by longtime NASCAR industry executives Jeff Dickerson and Thaddeus “T.J.” Puchyr. RACE #11 – KANSAS SPEEDWAY
The NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) head to Kansas Speedway for the first Midwest races this season. Back-to-back days of on-track action kicks off under the lights with the NCWTS 134-lap Wise Power 200 Saturday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. ET, the seventh race on the Series’ schedule. The NCS will take on the 1.5-mile Kansas oval in the 267-lap Buschy McBusch Race 400 on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. ET. The weekend’s events mark the first of two visits to Kansas Speedway on the NCS schedule.

Chevrolet has won 12 of the 30 NASCAR Cup Series races at the 1.5-mile oval that features variable banking of 17 to 20 degrees in the turns. Career Chevrolet driver Jeff Gordon won the inaugural NCS race at the track in September 2001 and later added victories in 2002 and 2014.

Byron extended his top-10 finish streak to eight races, starting with his win at Homestead-Miami Speedway in February. The 23-year-old Charlotte native’s impressive run is the longest top-10 streak for a Hendrick Motorsports driver since Dale Earnhardt Jr. from October 2013 to March 2014.

Joining Byron in the Top-10 of the Driver Standings, Chase Elliott, No. 9 UniFirst Camaro ZL1 1LE, is eighth and Kyle Larson, No. 5 HendrickCars.com Camaro ZL1 1LE, is ninth.

CHEVROLET LEADS NXS MANUFACTURER STANDINGS
Talladega NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) race winner Jeb Burton moved to fourth in the Driver Standings. Reigning NXS champion Justin Haley is fifth. Chevrolet, with five wins in eight races thus far this season, is atop the Manufacturer Standings. The series is off until May 8 at Darlington Raceway.

QUOTABLE QUOTES
WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 AXALTA CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 4th IN STANDINGS
“All 1.5-mile tracks are definitely not the same. Kansas is probably the most similar to Las Vegas but, even in that aspect, Kansas has less grip. It’s a very temperature-sensitive racetrack. You have to be able to run the bottom effectively but then be able to run the top lane just as strong the longer the race goes along. I think we were good in both races last year, but I think the June race was the best shot we have had at winning there. I’m excited to get back and see what we can do this time.”

BYRON ON HIS CONNECTION AND SUCCESS WITH CREW CHIEF RUDY FUGLE:
“Everyone talks about the drivers being the stars, but it takes more than just us to be successful. If you look at the top five or six teams, they’ve all been together with their crew chiefs and having success for multiple years now. It’s important to find those guys that can really click for you and that you can have success with long term. I feel like Rudy and I are just building the foundation for what is next to come when it comes to us working together. We’re in a really good place right now. We’re just starting to get our rhythm which is definitely a good thing for us. We have started the year strong and we’re only going to continue to build momentum from here.”

CHASE ELLIOTT, NO. 9 UNIFIRST CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 8th IN STANDINGS
“We had a pretty good run at Kansas last fall, so we should have some notes that we can bring back this weekend. Kansas is a track, to me, that just feels different compared to other mile-and-a-half tracks. With the way the corners are shaped and with it being progressively banked, the top side is going to become dominant and, in my opinion, those tracks typically put on good shows.”

KYLE LARSON, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 9th IN STANDINGS
LARSON ON 1.5-MILE SUCCESS:
“I’m excited to get to Kansas. It’s a track I’ve run well at in the past. It seems I’ve always had speed there. Our Hendrick Motorsports Chevys have had really good speed on the mile-and-half’s this year, so that’s makes me even more excited to get there. Kansas is the track that I feel is the most similar to Las Vegas where we won earlier this year.”

CLIFF DANIELS, CREW CHIEF, NO. 5 HENDRICKCARS.COM CAMARO ZL1 1LE
DANIELS ON 1.5-MILE SUCCESS THIS YEAR AND CHARACTERISTICS OF KANSAS SPEEDWAY:
“Kansas is unique. It’s getting some age, which is interesting to say about Kansas since it’s new compared to other tracks. But while it has aged, it’s still relatively flat and not super bumpy, and that’s unique to the shape and geometry of the track. We have a strong intermediate program and there are some things learned this year that will apply this weekend at Kansas.”

AUSTIN DILLON, NO. 3 BASS PRO SHOPS/TRACKER OFF ROAD CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 12th IN STANDINGS
HOW IS KANSAS UNIQUE COMPARED TO SOME OF THE OTHER 1.5-MILE TRACKS?
“Kansas Speedway has done a really good job with their banking. There’s a line right up by the fence that has a little extra grip. There’s an angle up there that I don’t think many tracks have figured out yet, but Kansas got it right. You can run from top to bottom there. The bottom groove is the preferred groove at the beginning, but it becomes too tight to try and run around there in turns one and two sometimes depending on what the balance of your race car is. I’ve enjoyed that track a lot ever since they repaved it. I wish every track could do as good as a job as Kansas has with repaves.”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 14th IN STANDINGS
BOWMAN ON STRONG RUNS AT KANSAS:
“Kansas is a track where I feel like we have a really good notebook. We have been great here in the past and our intermediate program at Hendrick Motorsports is strong. I feel like we always have a chance to win when we come here and that is credited to the No. 48 team. Last week didn’t end how we would have liked it to, so we are hoping for some redemption on Sunday.”

GREG IVES, CREW CHIEF, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 1LE
IVES ON WHAT MAKES KANSAS UNIQUE:
“The ability to move around multiple grooves makes Kansas Speedway a track where we look forward to running. Goodyear does such a good job with the tire there. There is fall-off, and pit strategy definitely comes into play there. Do you short pit or go long? Unlike some tracks, I think all the drivers say that they can’t wait to get back to Kansas. Not like you can’t put any extra effort into races, but I think a lot of guys circle that on the calendar and think they can have a lot of fun there.”

TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 CHILDRESS VINEYARDS CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 22nd IN STANDINGS
WHEN IT COMES TO A TRACK LIKE KANSAS SPEEDWAY WHERE YOU MAY BE ABLE TO RUN THE FENCE, DO YOU GO IN WITH A HIGHER SENSE OF CONFIDENCE? OR WHAT ARE THE KEYS TO SUCCESS AT KANSAS?
“I want to say I do, but it can be tough since that’s not the only way to be successful at Kansas Speedway. When I’m on the fence when the tires get warmer and we are on a longer run, the top can be there as a tool to help me with long run speed. I feel like when I’ve come in years past, I have almost put too much into it. My first race last year I tried to run it too much and tried to make our car the fastest car on the track when really I didn’t need to be at that time. Then, the second race we had there, my team did a really good job of making our car run well all across the racetrack, but I felt like I had to run the top and got us into a hole. So, running the top at Kansas is a lot of fun and we can get speed doing it, but it’s important to be versatile and be smart throughout the whole race. We’ll have a good starting position, which should help us on Sunday. But when I think about Kansas, I also think about execution getting to pit road, being fast in and out of the box, executing the green flag stops we’re going to have throughout the stages, and managing restarts. We just need to be smart and manage other parts of the race to make sure it doesn’t get away from us. We have a good starting spot with our No. 8 Childress Vineyards Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE, so the goal is to build on that and race smart all day long.”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 CAMPING WORLD CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 24th IN STANDINGS
HOW WOULD YOU EVALUATE YOUR SEASON SO FAR?
“I think we have been doing a good job. But I think our potential is higher to be very honest with you. I think that we still have a few areas to improve, but this team is going to win races and I have no doubt about that. I’m hungry to be able to get there. I’m trying to be patient, but we are going to get there. I know that the group of people that we have, not just in the race team but in the ownership with Justin (Marks), Pitbull and Ty (Norris) – it just feels so good. We have such an amazing group of people that I know it is going to make for a successful team on the race track.”

ERIK JONES, NO. 43 BLACK ENTREPRENEUR INITIATIVE CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 27th IN STANDINGS
HOW IS KANSAS UNIQUE COMPARED TO SOME OF THE OTHER 1.5-MILE TRACKS?
“Kansas (Speedway) is pretty far up on my list of favorite 1.5-mile tracks because you can move around and run anywhere. There are so many different lanes you can run. It has a lot of grip, but it changes as the track goes and as it gets rubbered-in, you have to move away from what worked earlier. A lot of time, it ends up against the outside wall, which is always fun as a driver. But you still have an opportunity there to get your car driving well through the bottom or the middle, and being able to make moves and move up through the pack. That has been the best part of Kansas over the last few years. I enjoy the racing there more than anything and what the track brings to the racing.”

COREY LAJOIE, NO. 7 NATIONS GUARD CAMARO ZL1 1LE – 30th IN STANDINGS
“Really looking forward to getting to Kansas this weekend with the Nations Guard Chevy Camaro. We ran well they’re both races last year, so our Crew Chief, Ryan Sparks has a good handle on the track. Kansas is getting bumpy and weathered, so it allows all grooves to be able to make speed. We’ve had a couple decent runs in a row. We look to continue stringing together good finishes to start the summer months.”

Talladega Recap: Speeding penalties and crash damage put an end to Denny Hamlin’s streak of six top-five finishes Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway. Hamlin lined up on the pole for the 500-mile event but dropped to the rear for the race start due to unapproved adjustments. He found his way back up to the front by Lap 28 in Stage 1, where he stayed for 21 laps. He then led 23 laps in Stage 2 before being dealt a pass-through penalty for speeding onto pit road – and then penalized again for speeding on his pass-through. The penalties left the FedEx Ground Toyota one lap down and in 36th, but plenty of laps remained to make up the lost ground. But on Lap 118, contact from behind forced Hamlin into the wall, causing damage that required lengthy repairs on pit road. The team was never able to recover and finished the race 32nd.

Kansas Preview: The NASCAR Cup Series will head next to Kansas Speedway, where Hamlin has three career victories, eight top-five and nine top-ten finishes. Hamlin and team seek their first win of the 2021 season as they look to build on their lead in the Cup Series standings. The #11 Toyota will again honor the memories of the FedEx Ground Indianapolis shooting victims with black-ribbon and #fedexstrong decals and will promote a fundraising site for those affected by this tragedy: gofundme.com/FedExSurvivors.

Hamlin Conversation – Kansas:

What is your FedEx Racing team’s focus as you get ready for Kansas after the way Talladega turned out?

“Talladega is behind us already. We’re going back to a mile-and-a-half, where we have a little more control over our own destiny than at a superspeedway. We’ll be ready to get things back on track and perform the way we have been all year.”

You won here at Kansas last year. What can you and your team do to replicate that again in 2021?

“We have to just keep doing what we’ve done all season. The wins haven’t happened yet, but we’ve run good races and will continue to do that. Even without a win, I still like where we’re at.”

Trans Am Brings Huge TA2® Field to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

SALINAS, CALI. (29 April 2021)- Nearly 60 fire-breathing American muscle Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli cars will return to the home of the Corkscrew this weekend (April 30-May 2) for the Trans Am SpeedFest at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

The Trans Am National Series, West Coast Championship and the Trans Am ProAm Challenge will all be in action this weekend on the 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course on California’s beautiful central coast for two 100-mile races, with the first race on Saturday (TA2® at 1:10pm PT) and the weekend finale on Sunday (TA/XGT/SGT/GT 1:30pm PT). (Video: Trans Am at Laguna)

Saturday Preview
A stacked field of 38 TA2® National and West Coast competitors will take the green on Saturday. With three championships being played out within one 100-mile sprint, fans are sure to be in for an action-packed race. (Watch Race Live Here)

Class points leader Thomas Merrill won his first TA2® race at Laguna in 2019 as a West Coast competitor, driving from the back of the field to a first-place finish. The victory jump-started his full time National tour, and this season, Merrill is poised for the championship after opening the season with a victory and podium finish in the first two rounds. Now, the Salinas native returns to his home track in the No. 81 HPTuners/MikeCopeRaceCars Ford Mustang to defend his inaugural victory from 37 other hungry TA2® drivers.

“It ought to be really good, because I think TA2® is as competitive as it’s ever been,” Merrill said. “It was really competitive when we raced here in 2019, and I think this year will be even tougher. We’re riding a high this season with our early results, but I’m pretty relaxed coming back for this race.”

Road Atlanta winner Franklin Futrelle will not make the journey west, leaving the points chase open to Rafa Matos (third in points) in the No. 88 3 Dimensional Services Group Ford Mustang and reigning champion Mike Skeen (fourth in points) in the No. 1 Liqui-Moly/Turn14Distribution Chevrolet Camaro.

After finishing fifth at Road Atlanta following power steering problems, Skeen knows winning against Merrill at Laguna will be a tough task but he’s up for the challenge.

“Laguna Seca has been a good track to me in the past in other series, I’ve won there in World Challenge, and had good races there in IMSA,” said Skeen. “I know the track well and I am happy there. Obviously, it’s Merrill’s home track, so I expect him to be good, but he will be good anywhere. The field is extremely deep this season so anyone can win. I think we will be strong out there, it’s a different kind of track, shorter, low grip, so we have our homework to do.”

Carl Rydquist finished first in the West Coast Championship at Sonoma in the No. 47 Racecars4Rent/GroupWholesale Ford Mustang. Entering the weekend as the points leader under Nelson Motorsports, Rydquist is eager to go up against the National drivers in his first combined series race as a TA2® driver.

“Sonoma was an action-packed race, I learned a lot about racing a TA2® car there,” said Rydquist. “I am really impressed with Nelson Motorsports. They have worked really diligently in the shop and every minute at Sonoma and have definitely earned this result. We are ready for next weekend at Laguna.”

The NASCAR youth movement in the TA2® class will be present again at Laguna with Sam Mayer and Connor Mosak representing Scott Lagasse Jr.’s TeamSLR. Laguna will mark Mayer’s fourth race with TA2® this season with a near perfect record, earning two victories in the ProAm Challenge and a second-overall finish at Road Atlanta after a pole-position start.

Going up against dozens of champions and drivers with decades of experience on a new track doesn’t rattle the 17-year-old.

“I go to these races to win,” said Mayer. “No matter if it’s a new track or one I’ve been to three times before, I go to win. Anything less, we go back to work to get me and the cars better so we can do just that.

“The Trans Am cars are lighter than what I’m used to running in NASCAR,” continued Mayer. “However, these TA2 cars help a ton with tracks and seat time on road courses. It’s really fun, too. Going to places that have special corners, like the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, is super cool. I watch a lot of YouTube compilations on racing and a lot of times I see these special corners. Now getting to race on them is super inspiring and cool.”

The Trans Am SpeedFest weekend will kick off on Friday with practice and qualifying for TA2. On Saturday, the TA/XGT/SGT/GT classes will host a combined practice and qualifying with the TA2 100-mile race slated for 1:10 p.m. Pacific. The weekend will conclude on Sunday with another 100-mile race this time from the TA/XGT/SGT/GT classes at 1:30 p.m. Pacific. (Full Schedule)

The Trans Am SpeedFest is not open to fans but will be live streamed exclusively on the Trans Am by Pirelli Racing App.

Record 10 Mercedes – AMG Motorsport Customer Racing Entries Across Three SRO America Championships Compete This Weekend at Sonoma Raceway

SRO America Sonoma Raceway, Sonoma, CA, March 2021.

AUSTIN, Texas – Mercedes-AMG Motorsport Customer Racing teams bring a record entry roster to this weekend’s SRO America Championships competition at Circuit of The Americas (COTA). A combined 10 Mercedes-AMG GT3 and Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams compete across three SRO racing series on the 3.427-mile COTA Formula 1 circuit, April 30 – May 2. The Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS, Pirelli GT4 America and GT America powered by AWS series each run doubleheader race schedules Saturday and Sunday in the second event weekend of the 2021 SRO America season.

The record COTA entry follows a previous record entry of eight Mercedes-AMG Motorsport customer competitors, which entered the season-opening SRO America Championships event weekend at Sonoma Raceway in California nearly two months ago.

Once again anchoring the record Mercedes-AMG Motorsport customer entry is a five-strong lineup of Mercedes-AMG GT3 teams competing in the top-tier Fanatec GT World Challenge and the new GT America series. The stout GT3 presence is joined at COTA by five Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams – two more than Sonoma – competing in Pirelli GT4 America and GT America.

Fifth year Mercedes-AMG Motorsport customer team DXDT Racing arrives at COTA with a four-car Mercedes-AMG GT3 entry and the momentum of a winning weekend at Sonoma.

In Fanatec GT World Challenge, co-drivers George Kurtz and Colin Braun secured a Pro-Am class victory at Sonoma in the No. 04 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the second of the weekend’s two 90-minute races.

Kurtz and Braun compete alongside DXDT Racing teammates David Askew and Ryan Dalziel in the No. 63 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the third-straight GT World Challenge season in 2021.

Team owner Askew and Dalziel co-drove to a second-place Pro-Am finish in Sonoma’s first GT World Challenge race and target their first victory of the season this weekend at COTA.

A third DXDT Racing entry competes in GT World Challenge this year with the duo of Erin Vogel and Michael Cooper in the No. 19 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3. Vogel and Cooper finished fourth in Pro-Am in Sonoma’s second race and look for their first World Challenge podium showing together at COTA.

Winward Racing and team drivers Russell Ward and Philip Ellis secured a GT World Challenge Pro-class podium showing in race two at Sonoma in the No. 33 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3.

The Texas-based Winward team seeks a “home” victory this weekend at COTA with a Mercedes-AMG GT3 updated to the latest specifications.

In only its second race, the new GT America powered by AWS series is a single driver championship made up of primarily amateur (“Am”) or bronze rated drivers. The championship, which runs a pair of 40-minute races each weekend, is open to both GT3 and GT4 competitors.

Kurtz returns to GT America this weekend after dominating the series debut doubleheader at Sonoma in a second No. 04 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3. Kurtz won both 40-minutes Sonoma races overall from the pole in the single-driver series and set the fastest race laps in both sprints.

Completing DXDT’s GT3 lineup at COTA is team driver CJ Moses, making his 2021 racing debut and first career race start in a Mercedes-AMG GT3. Not competing in the Sonoma opener, Moses takes the wheel of the No. 58 DXDT Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the first time during a race in this weekend’s GT America doubleheader.

The five Mercedes-AMG GT4 teams entered at COTA is the most to ever compete in an SRO America Championships weekend.

Christian Szymczak and Kenny Murillo come to COTA after a Pirelli GT4 America victory and second-place finish in the Silver class in the No. 72 Murillo Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4 at the Sonoma opener.

Capstone Motorsports and co-drivers John Allen and Kris Wilson also bring some podium momentum to COTA. Allen and Wilson scored a pair of Pirelli GT4 America Am-class second place finishes at Sonoma in the No. 16 Capstone Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4.

Ross Chouest and Aaron Povoledo made their Pirelli GT4 America co-driving debut at Sonoma in the No. 89 RENNtech Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4.

RENNtech expands to a two car and two series program this weekend with the addition of a second No. 39 Mercedes-AMG GT4, for Chris Cagnazzi and Guy Cosmo in Pirelli GT4 America. Cosmo secured Pirelli GT4 race wins and a string of podium finishes in a RENNtech Mercedes-AMG GT4 in 2019.

The RENNtech team is also set for the GT4 class in the single driver GT America doubleheader at COTA, with Chouest in the No. 89 and Cagnazzi in the No. 39 in both races.

Jeff Courtney, a former series champion in SRO Americas competition, makes his 2021 debut at COTA in his No. 999 RecStuff Racing Mercedes-AMG GT4. Courtney finished third in the Am class in 2020’s final race last October at Indianapolis and looks for even better results this weekend in his first start in the new GT America series.

Following a full day of practice Friday and qualifying for all series Saturday morning, the weekend’s schedule of six races begins Saturday afternoon at COTA.

Pirelli GT4 America’s first 60-minute sprint kicks the racing off at 11:30 a.m. CDT. The first 90-minute Fanatec World Challenge race of the weekend follows with a 1:15 p.m. CDT race start while the opening 40-minute GT America sprint race closes out the first day of racing action with a 4:45 p.m. CDT green flag.

Sunday’s schedule begins with the final Pirelli GT4 America race at 11 a.m. CDT. The GT World Challenge series closes out its weekend with a 1 p.m. CDT start for its second 90-minute race before the GT America finale brings the weekend to a close with a 3:50 p.m. CDT scheduled start time.

Saturday morning qualifying and all six weekend races livestream free on the SRO GT World YouTube channel.

Additional coverage airs on the CBS Sports Network (CBSSN) with a GT World Challenge highlights and live racing package this Sunday, May 2, at 2:00 pm EDT. An encore presentation airs that evening at 10:00 p.m. EDT. that evening.

The weekend schedule, live timing and scoring, as well as session reports and one-stop video viewing for GT World Challenge, are available at gt-world-challenge-america.com.

Ryan Dalziel, Driver – No. 63 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3: “Circuit of The Americas has always been a good track for me and it’s for sure a great track for the Mercedes-AMG GT3. A couple of cars were pulled back on performance since the Sonoma opener. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 is one of them, so it will be interesting to see where our speed is after these recent rules adjustments, but we had a really good test at COTA in Austin about a month ago. So, hopefully the hard work from that test translates into a fast car straight off the truck. As always, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 shines in braking and high-speed corners, and COTA has plenty of both. The track just changes so much with the weather, so it’s always tough to stay ahead of the conditions at COTA, but rain or shine we’ve put in the hard work. Now it’s time to execute.”

Russell Ward, Driver – No. 33 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3: “The older car did its job really well for us in our first GT World Challenge races. We still have it, and have some plans for it, but it is really important to be on same playing field. We have the Evo update on this new car, it is a fantastic upgrade, and we took it out for a rollout last week in Houston. It’s good to go, it’s fast and we are looking forward to getting back at it at COTA. The Mercedes-AMG GT3 likes COTA a lot, it’s a really good track for the car with a lot of high speed and flowing turns. It suits the Mercedes-AMG GT3 very well. In my opinion, COTA is the most beautiful racing facility in the United States. It’s a home race, only about a three-hour drive for us, and I am looking forward to getting back out there.”

CJ Moses, Driver – No. 58 DXDT Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3: “I’m really looking forward to getting into the GT America powered by AWS fight. The competition at Sonoma looked very strong, and of course George had a great weekend. I’m excited to race the Mercedes-AMG GT3 with our DXDT team in this new sprint series! Stepping up from TCR to GT3 this year is a big jump, and my expectation is for a lot of personal growth and to gain experience. My wife and I have daily driven Mercedes-AMGs for the past decade, and one has even been credited with saving her life, therefore I have confidence in the platform and the engineering behind it. I was excited to jump into the Mercedes-AMG GT3 and it did not disappoint! It has already been very successful, and it is my intention to add to that success. A podium and a good haul of championship points would be a great way to start.”

Guy Cosmo, Driver – No. 39 RENNtech Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT4: “I’m thrilled to be back with RENNtech Motorsports in the Mercedes-AMG GT4, pairing with Chris Cagnazzi. I have a lot of experience with the Mercedes-AMG GT4, and in the short period of time I was last with RENNtech we had great success straight away. The Pirelli GT4 America grid is looking highly competitive, but we are up for the task and ready for action.”
