DiBenedetto Finishes 13th on the Dirt at Bristol

#21: Matt DiBenedetto, Wood Brothers Racing, Ford Mustang Menards/Quaker State

Matt DiBenedetto and the No. 21 Menards/Quaker State team recovered from a pre-race penalty to finish 13th in the inaugural Food City Bristol Dirt Race.

The race was postponed from Sunday to Monday afternoon due to torrential rains in the Tennessee mountains, and DiBenedetto was set to start 12th. But a miscue unloading the Menards/Quaker State Mustang from the team hauler caused some fender damage, which is considered by NASCAR to be an unapproved adjustment. The penalty for any change to the car prior to the start of the race is moving to the rear for the initial start.

Once DiBenedetto took the green flag, he set about working his way forward. Despite the dusty conditions that limited his visibility throughout the race, he was up to 24th by Lap 49, when the caution flag flew for a multi-car crash just ahead of him.

Having escaped damage there, he continued his climb, and was up to 16th place at the end of the first 100-lap Stage.

In the second Stage, he ran as high as 14th at one point and just outside the top 20 at another, but wound up 15th at the end of that 100-lap run.

In the final 50 laps, he ran as high as 11th before taking the checkered flag in 13th place. It was his fourth finish of 16th or better as he and the No. 21 Menards/Quaker State team continue to bounce back from a disappointing start to the 2021 season.

“We started last and got a decent finish,” DiBenedetto said. “I’ll take it.”

DiBenedetto said his spotter Doug Campbell deserves much of the credit for keeping him out of harm’s way throughout the race.

“I need to give a big shout out to Doug,” he said. “As dusty as it was, he did an excellent job of looking ahead and keeping us out of trouble.”

Eddie Wood seconded DiBenedetto’s comments, adding that the driver/spotter combo did a commendable job missing the mayhem around them.

“It seemed like most every crash happened right in front of Matt or beside him,” he said. “I was happy to get through the race with no damage.”

DiBenedetto said that while there were issues with dust on Monday, he believes that with some changes future dirt races at Bristol will be improved. Track officials announced on Monday that the dirt would return next year.

“It would help to run it at night,” DiBenedetto said.

DiBenedetto and Wood also offered congratulations to their fellow Ford teammates at Team Penske, who now have won on consecutive weekends – Ryan Blaney at Atlanta and Joey Logano at Bristol.

“It’s always a good day when a Ford driver wins,” Wood said.

After taking a week break for Easter, DiBenedetto and the No. 21 Wood Brothers team will return to action at the Woods’ home track, Martinsville Speedway, on Saturday night, April 10.

No. 2 Discount Tire Ford Mustang – Brad Keselowski

Start: 20th
Stage 1: 21st
Stage 2: 16th
Finish: 11th
Status: Running
Laps Completed: 253/253
Laps Led: 0
Point Standings (behind first): 5th (-95)

Notes:

  • Brad Keselowski scored an 11th-place finish in the Food City Dirt Race on Monday at Bristol Motor Speedway. Keselowski ran a remarkably clean race and was rewarded with a respectable finish. He remains fifth in NASCAR Cup Series driver standings, 95 points behind the leader Denny Hamlin.
  • The driver of the Discount Tire Ford took a conservative approach in Stage 1. He was able to stay out of trouble and took care of his tires, which gave many drivers trouble throughout the day. He was credited with a 21st-place finish when the stage ended on lap 100. The Discount Tire Ford Mustang needed to turn better in the center of the corners and crew chief Jeremy Bullins made track bar and air pressure adjustments. Keselowski restarted 21st when the race went green.
  • Keselowski turned in a solid performance throughout Stage 2. He worked his way to 17th-place when the second competition caution on lap 150 brought the leaders to pit road. Bullins made another round of chassis and air pressure adjustments during the stop. On lap 154 Keselowski narrowly missed an incident involving teammate Ryan Blaney and others dodging cars and finding a way through the dust. He survived two more restarts in the closing laps of the segment to claim a 16th-place finish when Stage 2 ended on lap 200. Team were given addition time work on cars while track officials watered down the racing surface for the final 50-lap sprint to the finish.
  • From there Keselowski steadily worked his way through traffic. He was holding firm to 12th position when the final caution on lap 247 pushed the race into NASCAR Overtime. Keselowski used the final two laps to pick off one more position, claiming an 11th-place finish at the checkered flag.

Quote: “We had a solid day with our Discount Tire Ford. I learned a lot for when we come back here next time. I’m happy for Joey and his team.”

No. 12 Advance My Track Challenge Ford Mustang – Ryan Blaney

Start: 3rd
Stage 1: 5th
Stage2: 24th
Finish: 8th
Status: Running
Laps Completed: 253/253
Laps Led: 0
Point Standings (behind first): 7th (-101)

  • Ryan Blaney started third and finish eighth in Monday’s Food City Dirt Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway. The driver of the No. 12 Advance My Track Challenge Ford Mustang ran inside the top-five for much of the first stage and recovered from a mid-race incident to score his fourth top-10 finish of 2021.
  • Blaney would battle Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin in the opening 100-lap segment. The Advance My Track Challenge Ford would run as high as second, but battled a tight condition on exit. Blaney would fall to seventh by the lap-50 competition caution. A strong restart by Blaney would get him to fourth by lap 70. Still battling that tight condition, Blaney would relinquish fourth to Daniel Suarez and hold off teammate Joey Logano for a fifth-place finish in Stage 1.
  • Blaney would begin Stage 2 from fifth and reported the Advance My Track Challenge Ford was the tightest it had been all day. He would fall from eighth on lap 140 to 12th on lap 150. Todd Gordon and the team would take a huge swing on adjustments going back to their baseline setup. Unfortunately, on lap 154, Blaney would be involved in a multi-car crash on the frontstretch due to a lack of visibility. The Advance My Track Challenge crew made swift repairs and managed to keep Blaney on the lead lap. He would finish Stage 2 in the 24th-position.
  • Fortune changed for Blaney in the final 50-lap run to the finish. The adjustments made by the Advance My Track Challenge crew brought the heavily damaged car to life and Blaney drove from 24th to eighth the final 50-plus laps to score an eighth-place finish. He remains seventh in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings.

Quote: “It was a long day for sure, starting up towards the front and just hanging around there. We ran fifth in the first stage but were struggling a little bit with our race car and trying to find the best way to work on it and fix it. It was tight in the middle. We couldn’t get the tightness out of it all day until the last run. We got good, but we faded a little bit there and then had a restart and I couldn’t see nothing. Everyone was in the dust and I think I chopped down on the 18 (Kyle Busch) and we wrecked and, luckily, we were able to fix it up nice and made some good changes there for that last run. We drove all the way from like 22nd or 23rd to eighth, so just proud of the effort. It’s a shame we didn’t find that change a little sooner than what we did, but, overall, a good comeback by the No. 12 group.”

No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang – Joey Logano

Start: 10th
Stage 1: 6th
Stage 2: 1st (second stage win of 2021)
Finish: 1st (first win of 2021, 27th-career Cup Series win)
Status: Running
Laps Completed: 253/253
Laps Led: 61
Point Standings (behind first): 2nd (-58)

  • Joey Logano and the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang made history on Monday afternoon at Bristol Motor Speedway, as the 30-year-old driver won the first NASCAR Cup Series race on dirt in over 50 years, leading the final 61 laps in the rain-delayed Bristol Dirt Race.
  • After starting in 10th, Logano worked forward, settling into the seventh position and being patient for the first 50-lap run all while trying to manage tire wear and observe track changes. Logano was ninth at the first competition caution and gained several spots as the race went back green when the No. 20 and No. 5 cars got together, triggering a multi-vehicle incident. The Shell-Pennzoil Mustang finished the stage in the sixth position.
  • The adjustments on the first two stops worked for Logano as he moved the Shell-Pennzoil forward from sixth to fourth, running lap times faster than the race leader in the later stages of the run. Logano would climb to the second position just after halfway in the second stage, trailing race leader Daniel Suarez as NASCAR adapted a single-file restart policy to help with the dust on restarts.
  • Logano would claim the lead late in the second stage, cruising to his second stage win of the 2021 season. On the stop, the team made a trackbar adjustment trying to help Logano fire off better on the short run without hurting the long run speed in the Shell-Pennzoil Mustang. On the restart for the final 50-lap run, Logano would battle side-by-side with the No. 11 of Denny Hamlin for the opening 10 laps before opening up a seven-car gap as the laps started to wind down.
  • Logano held the point on throughout the final stage, holding off Hamlin and early race leader Martin Truex Jr. With a nearly one-second lead and less than five laps to go, the caution flag wave, setting up a green-white-checkered shootout. On the green, Logano was able to pull away and hold off Hamlin and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. to take his first win of the 2021 season and the 27th victory of his career.
  • With the win, Logano locked himself and the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil team into the NASCAR Playoffs and moved to second in the NASCAR Cup Series point standings.

Quote: “It’s incredible. How about Bristol on dirt? This is incredible, unbelievable racetrack — great job by everyone that prepped the track. Obviously, a lot of work over here the last few days. We did a lot of work in the dirt department here the last few weeks. My buddy Ryan Flores and my car chief Jerry Kelley doing a good job with the modified and just making laps and learning where I was going. A lot of that helped. Kevin Buskirk helped a lot, too. He has a lot of knowledge and obviously Paul Wolfe, this team, great car obviously to be able to execute the race that we did and get a win. I was getting nervous. There were so many first-time winners and different winners than there has typically been I said, ‘We’ve got to get a win to make sure we get in the playoffs,’ so it’s amazing to get this Shell-Pennzoil Mustang into Victory Lane at Bristol. There’s nothing like winning at Bristol, but putting dirt on it and being the first to do it is really special.”

Erik Jones Finishes in the ninth-place at the Bristol Motor Speedway

Erik Jones and the No. 43 Tide Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE team finished in the ninth-place in the NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) Food City Dirt Race at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on Monday, March 29.

NASCAR made the decision to cancel the qualifying races on Saturday, March 27, that were originally intended to set the field at the half-mile. After inclement weather canceled qualifying, the lineup for the 250-lap event was determined by using NASCAR’s competition-based formula, which takes into account finishing positions from the previous race (weighted 25% owner and 25% driver, 24th-place Atlanta Motor Speedway), the ranking in team owner points (35%, 25th-place) and the fastest lap from the previous race (15%).

Jones started the event at the half-mile track in Bristol, Tenn., from the 24th-place on Row 12.

The event marked the first time the NASCAR Cup Series competed on dirt in the sport’s modern era.

The 24-year-old Byron, Michigan, native was scored as high as the eighth-place at the Bristol Motor Speedway, where the high-banked concrete oval was transformed into a state-of-the-art dirt racing facility. Jones posted his second top-ten finish of the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series season.

“It was a good day for our No. 43 Tide Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at the Bristol Motor Speedway. We started a little bit further back in the lineup, and worked our way towards the top-10. Our Richard Petty Motorsports team ended up getting some good stage points throughout the day (Stage 2, eighth-place) and ended up coming home in the ninth place. It was a solid day. What we were looking for today was getting back towards the top 10, and I think our Chevrolet Camaro was probably a little bit better than that.

We just kind of ran out of laps and ran out of time the way the race was sectioned out.

“We got some good notes. We are going to do this again in the future, so hopefully we can take something we learned from today, move forward with it and bring it back next time.” -Erik Jones

Why You Should Never Refuse Medical Treatment After An Accident

No matter how small or seemingly inconsequential an accident is, you should always get medical attention afterward. Even a minor fender bender happens so fast that you may not even be aware that you got injured. Or, the adrenaline from the accident acts a painkiller and you don’t feel anything that would suggest that you are hurt.

The problem is that you go home or to work and about your day and suddenly you realize that something did happen. You were injured after all. What do you do now?

In this article, we will go over exactly why you should never refuse medical care after you’ve been in a minor accident.

You risk losing out on a case

After a car accident, it is investigated to find out who is at fault. When you are cleared of responsibility then you would have a very good case to recover expenses from any medical treatment or lost wages that occur as a result of the injury.

Unless, of course, you decided to not seek any help. It could be that EMTs came and offered assistance and you said no, or you never asked to bring to the hospital. Whatever the case, you need to go to the doctor right away.

Once you leave the scene, no matter how good your car accident lawyer is, you have compromised your case and may never see any compensation. A good defense attorney is going to make the case that your injuries could have happened after the accident as nobody knows what happened once you left the scene.

It can be argued that you already had a previous injury and are now looking to fraudulently claim to have been injured, or some other event happened at a later date. Or even ome of the internal injuries was not immediately apparent.

Immediate care could have prevented further injury

Let’s suppose that the jury or judge was sympathetic and agreed that the injury did happen at the time of the accident even though you had left. A good lawyer would then investigate the extent of the injuries and find a doctor to conclude that the injuries are worse now because no care was provided early on. It’s possible that your injury became more serious after time had passed since there was no initial treatment. Treatment that could have made it a much more minor injury.

Any settlement relies on a proper diagnosis and treatment plan to understand how it is relatable to the accident. Then, there needs to be a determination with a monetary figure that corresponds to the injury from an accident. The more time that goes by the more difficult it is to award a suitable figure since the injury was worsened by not getting help.

Insurance companies are not your friend

Always remember that when you are dealing with insurance companies from an accident that they are not looking at your best interests. Make sure that you are taking matters into your own hands and insisting on going to the doctor to be checked.

How to Bring Your Car Closer To the NASCAR Level

Not everyone can buy a NASCAR level ride and have fun in the streets by driving like their favorite NASCAR drivers. These cars can be incredibly expensive, and out of budget for many people.

However, that shouldn’t stop you from having fun and pretending you are in a NASCAR race.

Some people go all out, even on one of the cheapest rides out there. It may seem silly to others, but it’s the closest the owner of that car may come to a racing car. So, no harm, no foul.

Before going into the details, you should look at your budget. With the following tips, the only limit is your budget. You can try to get as much as possible, but still take account of your spare cash beforehand.

Car Wraps

To get up to the NASCAR level, you need to decide whether to start with the interior, engine, or exterior. For the exterior, all you really need is excellent vehicle detailing with Sevenx Creations and a wrap.

Here, you may want to make your car look more like the ride your favorite NASCAR driver has on the tracks. However, you can also come up with something entirely unique and be a NASCAR driver of your own.

With the interior, you don’t really need to change anything unless you have some upgrades on your mind.

Car Performance Upgrade Tips

Coming to the engine part of your transformation, the sky is the limit. You can easily get your hands on a lot of aftermarket parts that can improve the performance of your car. Let’s go over some of the improvements that you can make.

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are tiny parts installed inside vehicles, but they are incredibly important. These plugs are responsible for good fuel economy, acceleration, and power. Considering that they wear out over time, you should consider changing these to begin your performance upgrade.

Worn out spark plugs are also the reason why your car may misfire.

ECU Remap

ECU stands for the Engine Control Unit. It’s a part of your car that makes sure the engine runs at a level suitable for warranties, provides better safety, and is in accordance with the law.

Generally speaking, the ECU can be incredible. However, you may need a professional to play around with your car’s ECU. Any qualified remap professional can create new engine maps that can give your engine the ability to show its true capabilities.

Cold-Air Intake

Your engine needs to get some air to make it run properly. When you install a cold air intake, you allow colder air to reach your hot engine. That results in better engine performance.

However, your car doesn’t need a cold air intake if it is naturally aspirated or electronically fuel injected. That’s because a cold air intake won’t be much help.

On the other hand, a turbocharged engine may get a massive boost with a cold-air intake.

Logano conquers inaugural Bristol Dirt Course

In the first NASCAR Cup Series-sanctioned race on the dirt in half a century, Joey Logano made a late charge to the front and prevailed on an overtime restart to win the inaugural Food City Dirt Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Course on Monday, March 29.

Qualifying was initially set to occur on Saturday, March 27, featuring four 15-lap qualifying heat events and the starting lineup was based on a formula weighing the results and position gained during each heat. The qualifying heats, however, were cancelled due to rain, and the starting lineup was determined by qualifying metrics, based on race/points results and the fastest lap from the previous Cup race.

Kyle Larson was awarded the pole position based on the metric formula, but he started at the rear of the field due to an engine change. The move propelled Denny Hamlin, the regular-season points leader, to the front row along with Ryan Blaney, winner of last weekend’s Cup event at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Along with Larson, Matt DiBenedetto and Michael McDowell dropped to the rear of the field due to unapproved adjustments.

Delayed by weather and steady rain, the race was delayed from starting on Sunday, March 28, as the main event commenced on Monday, March 29. When the green flag waved and the race commenced, Hamlin launched his No. 11 FedEx Toyota Camry ahead with an early advantage on the outside lane as he led the first lap ahead of teammate Kyle Busch and Ryan Blaney.

The following lap, Kyle Busch powered his No. 18 M&M’s Messages Toyota Camry to the lead. Shortly after, teammate Martin Truex Jr., winner of the Truck Series event at the Bristol Dirt Course, moved into second place as Hamlin dropped to third place. Behind, Blaney was in fourth followed by Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman and William Byron.

On the ninth lap, Truex emerged as the new leader of the event while Kyle Busch, who fell off the pace, pitted due to an overheating issue.

By Lap 15 and with the dirt kicking up on the cars through every turn, Truex was leading by more than a second over Blaney, who was locked in a battle with the No. 24 Liberty University Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE driven by Byron. Hamlin and Bowman were in the top five followed by Joey Logano, Christopher Bell, Kevin Harvick, Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman. Meanwhile, Kyle Larson, one of NASCAR’s dirt specialists who started at the rear of the field due to an engine change, was up into 18th place.

Through the first 30 laps of the event, Truex continued to lead as he was ahead by two seconds over Blaney. Teammates Bowman and Byron battled for third and fourth while Christopher Bell, one of the favorites as a dirt racing specialist, moved his No. 20 IRWIN Toyota Camry into fifth place. By then, Larson was in 12th. Kyle Busch, on the other hand, was in 38th place and trapped two laps behind the leaders.

Not long after, Bowman slipped his way into the runner-up spot. In addition, Byron slipped his way on the inside lane in the dirt to take over third place, thus dropping Blaney to fourth.

On Lap 41, the first caution of the NASCAR Cup Series’ dirt event at Bristol flew due to a vicious multi-car wreck in the backstretch that involved Corey LaJoie, Stewart Friesen, Shane Golobic, rookie Anthony Alfredo and Aric Almirola, whose No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang sustained heavy damage after being hit three different times. The wreck, which occurred in front of the leaders, was enough for NASCAR to display the red flag, with the event being stopped for six and a half minutes.

When the red flag was lifted and the race returned to racing under green on Lap 45, Truex retained the lead following a strong restart. Teammate Bell moved up into second place followed by teammate Hamlin while Bowman fell back to fourth ahead of Ryan Newman and Byron. Larson, meanwhile, moved up to seventh.

Two laps later, the caution returned when contact from Byron sent Newman around in the backstretch. Fortunately, the field dodged Newman as he continued without any serious damage. In the midst of Newman’s incident, Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick and rookie Chase Briscoe made contact with one another, where Harvick pinned Briscoe’s car against the outside wall and resulted with both competitors sustaining damage. Cody Ware was also involved in a separate incident with his car coming to a rest towards the backstretch’s inside wall.

The incident was enough to send the field to the first scheduled competition caution on Lap 50. Under the competition caution, the field pitted and the teams were placed on a three-minute clock to work on the adjustments of the cars.

When the field returned to the track and the race returned to green on Lap 51, Truex retained the lead followed by teammate Bell and Bowman. Larson charged up to fourth place followed by Hamlin and Daniel Suarez.

Shortly after, the caution returned when Bell ran up the track in Turn 1 and entering the backstretch, got loose and spun in the dirt, collecting Larson and Ross Chastain, who ran into Larson’s No. 5 Freightliner Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE after having his path blocked. Teammates Harvick and Briscoe also sustained damage along with Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

Under caution, Larson drove his damaged car into the rear bumper of Bell’s car to express his displeasure as both competitors pitted for heavy damage on both of their cars. Bell and Chastain were knocked out of the race following the incident while Larson continued, though he dropped off the lead lap.

When the race restarted on Lap 59, Truex retained the lead following a strong start while Suarez moved up into second place. Byron and Blaney were in third and fourth followed by Stenhouse and Hamlin. Chase Elliott and Logano were in seventh and eighth followed by Chris Buescher. Tyler Reddick, Bowman, Bubba Wallace and Ryan Newman

By Lap 70, the No. 19 Auto-Owners Insurance Toyota Camry driven by Truex remained as the leader by nearly a second over Suarez while Byron, Blaney and Hamlin continued to run in the top five. Logano was in sixth while Elliott and Bubba Wallace battled for seventh. Stenhouse and Newman were in the top 10. Meanwhile, Kyle Busch, who returned to the lead lap under the first competition caution, was in 17th behind brother Kurt Busch.

Ten laps later, Truex stabilized his advantage to less than two seconds over the No. 99 Camping World Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE driven by Suarez while third-place Byron was trailing by less than three seconds. Hamlin was in fourth ahead of Team Penske’s Blaney and Logano while Wallace was in seventh ahead of Elliott. Newman and Stenhouse continued to run in the top 10 and just ahead of Buescher, Reddick, Ryan Preece, Erik Jones and Bowman. The Busch brothers were in 17th and 18th, Harvick was in 20th, Brad Keselowski was in 23rd in between Michael McDowell and Stewart Friesen and Briscoe was in 25th in front of Austin Dillon.

Through the first 90 laps of the event, Truex’s advantage increased to more than two seconds over Suarez, with Byron closing in on Suarez’s rear bumper for the runner-up spot.

With early action igniting in the inaugural Cup Bristol dirt event, Truex was able to cruise to the first stage victory on Lap 100 and become the ninth different competitor to record a stage victory through the first seven Cup events of the 2021 season. Byron crossed the start/finish line in second place followed by Hamlin, Suarez and Blaney. Logano, Wallace, Newman, Stenhouse and Buescher were scored in the top 10. By then, 24 of the 39-car field were scored on the lead lap, with names like Briscoe and Austin Dillon pinned a lap behind. Larson, meanwhile, was in 30th, two laps behind the leaders.

Under the stage break, the leaders returned to pit road as the teams were given three minutes to service the cars.

The second stage started on Lap 101 with Truex and Byron on the front row. At the start, Truex retained the lead and Suarez reassumed second place on the outside of Byron while Logano made a charge for fourth place against Hamlin. Newman, following his early spin, charged his way back into sixth place ahead of Wallace and Blaney as the dirt was kicking up around the track in the midst of the competitive racing.

By Lap 110, Truex was ahead by nearly a second over Suarez while Byron, Logano and Hamlin were in the top five. Newman, Wallace, Blaney, Buescher and Chase Elliott were in the top 10 followed by Reddick, Erik Jones, Bowman, Matt DiBenedetto and Kyle Busch.

With the field reaching the halfway point on Lap 125, Truex remained in command of the field by less than a second over Suarez while third-place Byron was trailing by less than two seconds. Logano continued to run in fourth place followed by Hamlin and Newman.

Not long after, Suarez started to close in on Truex’s rear bumper for the lead as he was behind by three-tenths of a second. Byron also started to close in with his deficit being a second behind.

On Lap 134, Suarez, who came into the main event with little dirt racing experience and in his seventh race with the newly formed Trackhouse Racing Team, put the bumper on Truex to move Truex out of the racing groove in Turn 3 and assume the lead in Turn 4. Not long after, Byron moved into second place while Truex dropped back to third place ahead of Logano and Newman.

By Lap 140, Suarez was ahead by a narrow margin over Byron while Truex continued to retain third place over Logano and Newman.

When the second competition caution flew on Lap 150, Suarez remained as the leader over Byron, Truex, Logano and Newman.

Under the second competition caution, the leaders returned to pit road for tires and service.

When the race restarted on Lap 152, Suarez and Byron battled dead even for the lead through the first two turns before Suarez prevailed on the outside lane. Not long after, the caution returned for a multi-car wreck on the frontstretch that started when in the midst of the dust, Kyle Busch ran into Blaney’s No. 12 Advance Auto Parts Ford Mustang, turning him and stacking up the oncoming competitors behind. The incident also involved Austin Dillon, Bowman, Michael McDowell, Ryan Preece, Cody Ware, J.J. Yeley and Larson.

The race restarted on Lap 158, and Suarez retained the lead following a strong start. Behind, Logano was able to take over second place while Byron and Truex battled for third place. Two laps later, however, the caution returned due to a single-car incident on the frontstretch involving Briscoe, who was turned by Keselowski.

Following the recent wrecks and the rising dust amid the restarts, NASCAR announced that the competitors will restart in a single-file line, not double lanes, for the remainder of the race.

When the race restarted on Lap 169, Logano challenged Suarez for the lead, but Suarez was able to retain the top spot. Behind, Truex was in third followed by teammate Hamlin, Byron, Newman, Elliott, Wallace, Reddick and Stenhouse.

By Lap 180, Suarez remained as the leader by half a second over Logano with Truex, teammate Hamlin and Byron remaining in the top five.

Six laps later, the caution flew due to an incident involving Cody Ware and J.J. Yeley in Turn 3.

On Lap 190, the race restarted and Suarez continued to lead, though Logano mounted another challenge for the lead. The following lap, Logano, following a brief battle with Suarez, emerged with a narrow advantage, though Suarez refused to give in.

By Lap 195, Logano was leading by nearly half a second over Suarez while Joe Gibbs Racing’s Hamlin and Truex battled for third place.

Following his late surge to the front, Logano was able to come back around and win the second stage on Lap 200. Suarez settled in second place followed by Hamlin, teammate Truex and Newman while Stenhouse, Wallace, Erik Jones, Reddick and Elliott were scored in the top 10.

Under the stage break, the leaders returned to pit road for adjustments. In addition, the teams were given approximately 10 minutes to work on the cars to allow track officials to work on the track in preparation for the final stage.

With 48 laps remaining, the final stage started with Logano remaining as the leader. At the start, Hamlin jumped to the outside lane to take the runner-up spot over Suarez. He then went to work on Logano for the lead while Truex started to close in on Suarez for third place.

Five laps later, Hamlin drew himself alongside Logano’s No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Mustang, with both competitors locked in a heated battle for the lead in the dirt. Following a lengthy side-by-side battle, Logano retained the lead by a narrow margin over Hamlin.

While Logano and Hamlin battled for the lead, Suarez remained in third place ahead of Truex, Newman and Tyler Reddick. Not long after, Reddick moved into the top five after overtaking Newman’s No. 6 Oscar Mayer Ford Mustang.

Under the final 35 laps of the event, Wallace’s hopes for a top-10 result evaporated when contact from Stenhouse sent Wallace around and cut the left-rear tire on Wallace’s No. 23 DoorDash Toyota Camry. He was able to limp back to pit road and have the tire changed.

With 30 laps remaining and the dirt continuing to kick up, Logano extended his advantage to under half a second over Hamlin with third-place Suarez trailing by three seconds. Truex and Reddick were in the top five followed by Newman, Stenhouse, Byron, teammate Elliott and Jones. By then, the leaders were mired in heavy, lapped traffic.

Down to the final 20 laps of the event, Logano remained as the leader, but by less than half a second over Hamlin. Behind, Truex moved into third place over Suarez.

Five laps later, Logano continued to lead by nearly half a second over Hamlin, with Logano starting to catch Bowman, Briscoe and Austin Dillon to lap them.

With 10 laps remaining, Logano was still leading by a reasonable margin over Hamlin. Meanwhile, Truex was trailing the two leaders by less than three seconds.

Down to the final five laps of the event, Logano extended his advantage to more than three seconds over Hamlin, who was still navigating his way through lapped traffic.

Just then, the caution flew due to Mike Marlar spinning on the frontstretch due to a flat tire. The caution all but evaporated Logano’s advantage of more than three seconds over Hamlin, who was briefly overtaken by teammate Truex after Hamlin made contact with the outside wall while trying to close back in on Logano. By then, Stenhouse was in fourth followed by Suarez, Reddick, Newman, Byron, Jones and Blaney.

The race restarted in overtime. At the start, Logano took off with the lead while Stenhouse mounted a challenge on Hamlin to take over the runner-up spot. Truex, meanwhile, fell off the pace after losing a tire.

When the final lap initiated, Logano was still leading while Stenhouse was able to overtake Hamlin for the runner-up spot.

With no challengers mounting close behind, Logano, who came into the event with little dirt experience, was able to come back around and claim the checkered flag ahead of Stenhouse.

By winning the first stock car event on the Bristol Dirt Course, Logano became the first competitor to win a Cup event on dirt since Richard Petty made the last accomplishment at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in September 1970. Logano also became the seventh different winner through the first seven Cup events of the 2021 season as he also collected his 27th career victory in NASCAR’s premier series.

“Man, it’s incredible!” Logano exclaimed on FOX. “How about Bristol on dirt, guys?! This is incredible! Unbelievable racetrack! Great job by everybody that prepped the track. Obviously, a lot of work over here the last few days. We did a lot of work in the dirt department here the last few weeks…I was getting nervous. There were so many first-time winners and different winners than there has typically been. I said, ‘We’ve got to get a win to make sure we get in the Playoffs,’ so it’s amazing to get this Shell/Pennzoil Mustang into victory lane at Bristol. There’s nothing like winning at Bristol, but putting dirt on it and being the first to do it is really special.”

“Everyone at Team Penske really put together some really good cars to come here and wing it,” Logano added. “That’s what this is about. Nobody really knew what to put in the car and we were able to adjust the right way throughout practice and get into victory lane. It’s great.”

Stenhouse crossed the finish line in an impressive second-place result and for his first top-five result in nearly a year followed by Hamlin, who secured his sixth top-five result of this season. Behind, Suarez notched a strong fourth-place result for his first top-five result since November 2019 and for a career-best result for the newly formed Trackhouse Racing Team. Newman finished in fifth place for his first top-five result since October 2019.

“Yeah, our Kroger Camaro was really good on the long run; we needed a little bit more NOS Energy Drink for the restarts,” Stenhouse said. “I just couldn’t get going, couldn’t get the turn in the race car that we needed. But, we made a ton of adjustments and we kind of went back and forth overnight of what we were going to do…Man, we had a blast. At the start of the race, I was terrible with the green race track and a little bit of moisture in it. But as it blew off, we got back to where we were in practice and felt really good with it. A good way to go into the off week. I’m going to go run my sprint car with my dad this weekend. Hope everyone has a good Easter.”

“I thought I could, on that last restart, run the top-end hard, but they didn’t prep it in-between cautions like they did before, so it was just marbles up there,” Hamlin said. “I’m proud of this whole FedEx Camry team. Man, I thought I had a shot there. I cut t[Logano] too many breaks there when he was cutting us off, but at the end of the day it looked like he had a little bit better car in the long run. I’m proud of this whole team. We are third-best again.”

“To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing,” Suarez said. “But, we’re having fun. Everyone at Trackhouse Racing did an amazing job. This is the second week in a row that we’ve had very fast race cars capable of running in the fop-five, top-10. I couldn’t be more proud of all these guys [like] Justin Marks, Ty Norris, and everyone that helps in this program…Everyone has been a huge support of myself. It just feels so good to be back. It’s been a little bit difficult the last year, and it feels so good to be able to race with these guys and to have some fun up front. Hopefully, our time will come soon.”

Byron, Reddick, Blaney, Jones and Elliott finished in the top 10.

Harvick finished 15th, Kyle Busch finished 17th behind brother Kurt, Truex dropped all the way back to 19th after leading a race-high 126 laps, Briscoe was the highest-finishing rookie in 20th, Stewart Friesen finished 23rd in his Cup debut, Wallace settled in 27th and Larson ended his long run in 29th.

Following an eventful, successful first-year run of the NASCAR Bristol Dirt Course event, NASCAR announced that the event will return in Spring 2022.

There were five lead changes for five different leaders. The race featured 10 cautions for 39 laps.

Following the first seven NASCAR Cup Series races of the 2021 season, Hamlin continues to lead the regular-season standings by 58 points over Logano, 80 over Truex, 85 over Larson and 95 over Keselowski.

RICKY STENHOUSE JR., NO. 47 KROGER CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 2nd
BRINGING IT HOME IN SECOND PLACE, YOU GUYS HAD TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO THIS RACE CAR ALL DAY LONG. FINALLY AT THE END, IT LOOKED REALLY GOOD.
“Yeah, our Kroger Camaro was really good on the long run; we needed a little bit more NOS Energy Drink for the restarts. I just couldn’t get going; couldn’t get the turn in the race car that we needed. But we made a ton of adjustments and we kind of went back and forth overnight of what we were going to do. (Kyle) Larson and I came out and hung with the track crew. Steve Swift and the boys did a great job of getting this thing raceable today with all the rain and all the challenges that they had.”
“Man, we had a blast. At the start of the race, I was terrible with the green race track and a little bit of moisture in it. But as it blew off, we got back to where we were in practice and felt really good with it. A good way to go into the off week. I’m going to go run my sprint car with my dad this weekend. Hope everyone has a good Easter. Go get some NOS Energy Drink at Kroger!”

DANIEL SUAREZ, NO. 99 CAMPING WORLD CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 4th
LESS THAN A WEEK AGO, YOU GOT ON DIRT FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. TODAY YOU LED 58 LAPS IN THE CUP RACE AND FINISHED FOURTH. HOW IN THE WORLD DID YOU DO IT?
“To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing. But we’re having fun. Everyone at Trackhouse Racing did an amazing job. This is the second week in a row that we’ve had very fast race cars capable of running in the Top-5, Top-10. I couldn’t be more proud of all these guys (like) Justin Marks, Ty Norris, and everyone that helps in this program; Camping World, Chevy, CommScope. Everyone has been a huge support of myself. It just feels so good to be back. It’s been a little bit difficult the last year, and it feels so good to be able to race with these guys and to have some fun up front. Hopefully our time will come soon.”

WILLIAM BYRON, NO. 24 LIBERTY UNIVERSITY CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 6th
“We had a lot of fun today. I felt like we were really good in Stage 1 and 2, and then I got too loose. The car just didn’t have enough to lean on and we struggled on the restarts because of that. We got it really good by the end and came back from eleventh to sixth. It was good; a lot better than I would have thought. We’ll move onto Martinsville and try to win that one.”

TYLER REDDICK, NO. 8 BETMGM CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 7th
“That was a tough day for everybody out there, but I’m really proud of my BetMGM team for sticking with me all day long. It was truly a battle out there to keep up with the changing track conditions. I felt like we had everything come at us today. Our No. 8 BetMGM Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE fired off too loose and then built too tight as the track changed. Visibility was a huge challenge too. My spotter, Derek Kneeland, did a great job helping me through all the restarts when I couldn’t see anything on the track with all the dust. Towards the end of Stage 2, my engine temps started pegging and we were all worried that was going to ruin our race, but thankfully a caution came out at the right time. I was able to cool it off long enough under yellow to make it to the stage break and have my team work on it. We had a shot at a top-five at the end today, but I went for it on the top and the grip just wasn’t there like I hoped. But overall, a really good day for us. We’ll take this top-10 finish and build on it in a couple weeks at Martinsville Speedway.”

ERIK JONES, NO. 43 TIDE CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 9th
“It was a good day for our No. 43 Tide Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE at the Bristol Motor Speedway. We started a little bit further back in the lineup, and worked our way towards the top-10. Our Richard Petty Motorsports team ended up getting some good stage points throughout the day (Stage 2, 8th-place) and ended up coming home in the ninth place. It was a solid day. What we were looking for today was getting back towards the top 10, and I think our Chevrolet Camaro was probably a little bit better than that even. We just kind of ran out of laps and ran out of time the way the race was sectioned out.”

“We got some good notes. It sounds like we are going to do this again in the future, so hopefully we can take something we learned from today, move forward with it and bring it back next time.”

KURT BUSCH, NO. 1 MONSTER ENERGY CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 16th
“We tried the slow and steady approach, tried to keep all the fenders on the Monster Energy Chevy, maybe that was too much of the old man sequence. Not many scratches on it, but not much speed, just tried to take care of it. It was good to see fans back at the track. Me and Harvick were back there trying to hold each other up!”

ALEX BOWMAN, NO. 48 ALLY CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 22nd
“Not how we wanted to end our day. We lost fourth gear early on and it just affected the rest of our race. I really think we could have been up front at the end. It’s going to be nice to have a weekend off this week and we will come back strong in Martinsville.”

ROSS CHASTAIN, NO. 42 CLOVER CAMARO ZL1 1LE – Finished 35th
“Just a disappointing day for the Clover team. We were making progress and working to see how the track conditions would change. Unfortunately, we didn’t even make it to the end of the first stage. Just a wrong place at the wrong time kind of moment.”

Austin Dillon and the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet Team Fight Through Long Afternoon at Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Race

Finish: 21st
Start: 9th
Points: 11th

“What a day at Bristol Motor Speedway. We fought hard all day, but we just never had the Bass Pro Shops / TRACKER Off Road Chevrolet we needed. It’s perplexing because it was a night and day difference from our practice sessions to the race. The team never gave up and worked all day to improve our handling. We’ll go back to Welcome to evaluate everything and start working on a game plan for next year’s race.” -Austin Dillon

JOEY LOGANO AND MUSTANG WIN INAUGURAL BRISTOL DIRT CUP RACE

  • Joey Logano won his first race of the season with today’s victory.
  • The win is Ford’s first Cup win on dirt since David Pearson won at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, NC, on June 26, 1969.
  • The win today is the 27th of his Cup Series career and 25th with Ford.
  • Today’s win is Ford’s 707th all-time in NASCAR Cup Series competition.
  • Of Team Penske’s 81 MENCS wins with Ford, 54 have come since rejoining Ford in 2013.

JOEY LOGANO, No. 22 Shell/Pennzoil Ford Mustang — VICTORY LANE INTERVIEW

HOW DO YOU SUM THIS UP? “Man, it’s incredible. There were so many first-time winners and different winners than there has typically been I said, ‘We’ve got to get a win to make sure we get in the playoffs,’ so it’s amazing to get this Shell/Pennzoil Mustang into Victory Lane at Bristol. There’s nothing like winning at Bristol, but putting dirt on it and being the first to do it is really special.”

TAKE US THROUGH THE CHANGING TRACK CONDITIONS ALL DAY. HOW MUCH OF A CHALLENGE WAS THAT? “It was definitely a challenge. When they watered the track the last stage that kind of changed everything. Denny and I had a heck of a race because he found grip up top and I was like, ‘Well, I don’t know how to do that,’ so I had to go up there and try to figure that out to defend the lead position and then eventually just worked the lapped cars. That was very hard as well as it should be. Everybody is racing to stay on the lead lap, so I was able to get through them as needed and, of course, the late-race caution but what an amazing team. Everyone at Team Penske really put together some really good cars to come here and wing it. That’s what this is about. Nobody really knew what to put in the car and we were able to adjust the right way throughout practice and get into Victory Lane. It’s great.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE PART OF HISTORY? “When you start the weekend here you don’t know what’s coming your way. You have no idea and to be able to figure it out some way and then be able to figure out where the speed is throughout practice. Paul Wolfe and all the guys did a tremendous job figuring that out for me.”

WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE FINAL RESTART? “This is obviously my first dirt win. It’s only my fourth dirt race ever, so I had a lot of fun trying to figure it out. I was having a blast racing, trying to find the right lanes, moving around, watching Denny figure out the top after they watered the track. I was like, ‘Oh no, now what do we do?’ So, just a crazy moment.”

WHAT WAS THAT LAST STAGE LIKE? YOU AND DENNY WENT AT IT. “I knew it was slugfest there for a little bit and as you see the lapped cars coming you’re like, ‘Oh no, now what?’ So, I was able to clear them at the right times and I think Denny might have got the wall a little bit and that helped on the final restart.”

YOUR THIRD BRISTOL WIN. “I finally won a spring race. I guess we needed dirt.”

RYAN NEWMAN, No. 6 Oscar Mayer Ford Mustang

“That was fun, no doubt. It was a good run for our Oscar Mayer Ford Mustang and a great team effort the entire week. I wish we could have had a chance to run the Truck race for Coke and Aggressive Hydraulics. I am really proud of the effort and a lot of guys got to see a lot more and experience a lot more. We got turned around there from a racing accident in turn 2 with the 24 and had to fight back and did. We just didn’t make it all the way back to the front. We had a pretty good car. I would have liked to see what we would have done with some track position but I am sure everyone else would say the same thing.”

RYAN BLANEY, No. 12 Advance My Track Challenge Ford Mustang

“Obviously, it was a long day, for sure, starting up towards the front and just hanging around there. We ran fifth or something in the first stage, but we were struggling a little bit with our race car and trying to find the best way to work on it and fix it. It was pretty tight in the middle. We couldn’t get the tightness out of it all day until the last run, really. And then we got really good, but we faded a little bit there and then had a restart and I couldn’t see nothing. Everyone was in the dust and I think I chopped down on the 18 and we wrecked and, luckily, we were able to fix it up nice and made some really good changes there for that last run. We drove all the way from like 22nd or 23rd to eighth, so just really proud of the effort. It’s a shame we didn’t find that change a little sooner than what we did, but, overall, a good comeback by the 12 group.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL, No. 34 Love’s Travel Stop Ford Mustang

“It was a fun day on the Bristol dirt. Our Love’s Travel Stop Ford Mustang was hooked up at the end. We passed a lot of cars on that last stage with 50 to go. I think we ended up 12th, so it was a solid day, a good points day, a lot of fun on the dirt. Visibility was tough. It was hard to see, but it was great racing there at the end. Thanks to all my guys. They brought a really fast Ford Mustang and it was a lot of fun. For a guy that doesn’t have any dirt experience this was a pretty good run.”

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 14 HighPoint.com Ford Mustang

“We had decent speed, it just seemed like every wreck we were a part of in weird ways. It is definitely frustrating being the dirt guy and having high hopes coming into this one and things just didn’t go our way. That is just part of it. We will just go on to Martinsville next. We made gains on our car compared to where we started today, so we will keep trying to do that.”

COLE CUSTER, No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang

“It was a struggle for us. We were really good in the wet but then in the dry we just couldn’t get a good balance on the car. We guessed one way after practice and it just wasn’t the right way. We survived and we will move on to the next one but it was definitely a pretty frustrating day for sure.”

ARIC ALMIROLA, No. 10 Smithfield Ford Mustang

WHAT TOOK PLACE THERE? “It started before that. The 77 slipped off the bottom. I was hunting the bottom and he slipped off the bottom, and I was trying to get in between him and the silly humps there and he turned back down across my nose and hit me in the right-front and kind of ran me up over the dirt hump and I spun. You can’t stop. You can’t see. That’s honestly the biggest problem. In dirt racing you don’t have a windshield in front of you, so you can pull a tearoff. We can’t reach out there and pull a tearoff off our windshield, so you can’t see anything. Everybody just comes piling in because you can’t see.”
