OSCAAR to preview 2013 race season at the Mega Speed Custom Car and Truck Show
As the days tick away towards the new season for the OSCAAR Super Late Models and Modifieds, the anticipation grows for the season ahead. With that, teams begin showing previews of their paint schemes and what they have in store for the season ahead. Three teams will showcase their new paint schemes for the season at the 2013 Mega Speed Custom Car and Truck Show as part of OSCAAR’s booth.
OSCAAR will have a booth at the Mega Speed Custom Car and Truck Show next weekend (March 22nd to 24th) at the International Centre in Toronto, Ontario. OSCAAR officials will be talking to show attendees about the cars, the schedule, and the season ahead.
As announced, OSCAAR will have three cars on display including sophmore driver Rob Poole and rookies Kevin Cornelius and Bobby Tolton.
Poole, who enters his second full OSCAAR season, will have his No. 45 OSCAAR Super Late Model on display. Last year saw Poole pick up a couple of heat wins on his way to finishing ninth in points. With the bad luck that Rob Poole Racing sustained in 2012, certainly they are hoping for a better season in 2013.
Cornelius will have his No. 17 OSCAAR Super Late Model on display as the 2011 Sunset Speedway Limited Late Model makes the jump up from limited late models to OSCAAR.
“Really excited about the 2013 race season,” the Orangeville, Ontario native said back in December. “I would have to go back to 1996 when I was in my first race at Sauble Speedway to compare the excitement. Really looking forward to racing in what I consider to be one of the top series in Ontario with the toughest competition with guys like Glenn and Brandon Watson, George Wilson, Derek Tiemersma, Rob Clarke, Rob Poole and the list goes on.
“I think OSCAAR is on the verge of getting real big and that Dave (Gainforth) and the group are heading in the right direction.”
As announced in December, Cornelius will be piloting a McColl Racing Enterprises chassis. It marks the first M.R.E OSCAAR built chassis.
Lastly, Tolton will have his No. 13 OSCAAR Modified on display as he enters his first season of competition at the modified level. Tolton brings six years of mini stock and limited late model experience to the table.
“It’s a collection of the greatest drivers in the province. You get the best of the best and everyone’s respectful,” Tolton explained earlier this year to OSCAAR journalist Clayton Johns. “They race against each other with a lot of respect. That’s what I like.”
OSCAAR is known as Ontario’s premier tour division for Super Late Model and Modified action.
Coming off of a successful season last year with the Super Late Models, the field has continued to grow. Along with Poole and Cornelius, you have 2012 champion Brandon Watson, four-time OSCAAR Champion Glenn Watson, past champion Derek Tiemersma, plus veterans George Wilson, Rob Clarke and sophomore Jesse Kennedy. NASCAR Canadian Tire Series driver J.R. Fitzpatrick has also announced that he will be running some OSCAAR races this year. He will also be joined in the series by rookie Andrew Gresel, who comes off of his late model success at both Sauble Speedway and Delaware Speedway.
With the Super Late Models hitting seven tracks across 12 dates, it promises to be a season packed full of action across Ontario.
Not too far behind, the OSCAAR Modifieds enter their second full season, ready to bring more action packed racing to tracks across Ontario. Many of the drivers have announced that they will return, including champion Gary McLean and front runners Brent McLean, Davey Terry and Josh Gruntz. They will be joined by some rookies as they have announced that they want to get involved in the action.
The Modifieds will hit eight tracks across 15 dates, including some double headers with the Super Lates.
As previously noted, the Mega Speed Custom Car and Truck Show takes place at the International Centre from Friday March 22nd to Sunday March 24th. The show will include many custom vehicles on display, including some Corvettes to celebrate Corvette’s 60th Anniversary and some Camaros to celebrate Camaro’s 40th Anniversary. The show also includes a star studded line-up that includes Rally Racer Ken Block and car designer Chip Foose, with wrestler Bill Goldberg as the event Grand Marshall.

Heavily Favored Busch Comes Up Short at Bristol
After breaking the Sprint Cup qualifying record and securing the pole for the Food City 500, leading Happy Hour practice, and winning the Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 300, Kyle Busch seemed to be the driver to beat this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Busch’s previous wins at Bristol include five Sprint Cup races, five Nationwide races, and three Camping World Truck races. Busch needed no introduction to fans at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile.” Before pitching the microphone to the side during driver introductions on Sunday, Busch said “I may not be Darrell Waltrip, but I don’t need an introduction!”
Busch led the first 56 laps of the Food City 500 before being penalized on pit road, which landed him in 38th position coming out of one of the many ServiceMaster Clean cautions of the day.
In under 200 laps Busch had battled his way back to the front of the pack. The last 50 laps had fans on their feet as Busch battled defending series champion, Brad Keselowski, for 2nd place. After clearing Keselowski, Busch was hoping for a caution going into the final laps to close the gap between him and Kasey Kahne. Unfortunately for Busch, the race continued under green, and he finished 2nd as Kasey Kahne won his first Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Busch wins the NNS Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 300 at Bristol
Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Jeff Foxworthy’s Grit Chips 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway in what was a thrilling end to a great race. Busch beat Kyle Larson by .023 seconds.
Larson finished second, Brian Vickers third, Sam Hornish Jr. fourth and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top-5.
Allgaier led the field to the green flag and led the first lap at the Bullring of Bristol. Jeff Green was the first start and park when he took his No.10 car to the garage. Dillon and Keselowski made contact with each other but both continued on the race track. On lap 24, Allgaier was approaching lap traffic and the No.7 of Smith caught up to him but could not complete the pass.
The first caution waved on lap 27 when the No.55 of Jamie Dick spun it and did a 360 but was okay and drove away. They went back to green on lap 31 with Allgaier continuing to lead.
The second caution waved on lap 60 when the No.5 of Brad Sweet spun it out on the backstretch. Sweet has had a tough weekend as he had a huge wreck with Joey Gase in practice and had to go to a backup car. Pit stops occurred for the first time this afternoon with all of the leaders coming in. The unique thing is, at Bristol, there is half of the pit road on the front stretch and half of the pit road on the back stretch. Bayne and Brian Scott only took 2 tires and will lead them to the green flag.
Green Flag was waved and Bayne led them around the track. Bayne led for eight laps before he got pressured by Busch for the top spot. Elliott Sadler was not having a good day and he got lapped on lap 75 telling his crew “That it will not run good and continued to fall back and on lap 88, he went to the garage after getting black flagged by NASCAR.
The third caution waved on lap 107 when the No.55 of Dick got spun by Vickers and then Nelson Piquet Jr had no room to go and t-boned into Dick’s car. Busch, Keselowski and Smith stay out while Harvick and Bayne come in so it will be interesting to see what will happen.
They restarted on lap 118 with Busch leading but was only 5 laps till the next caution coming out when the No.51 of Jeremy Clements slapped the wall in turn 2, sending debris down on the track. None of the leaders came in to pit.
Lap 130 they restarted and Busch continued to lead in the KBM Monster Energy ride but had to hold off the Discount tire car of Keselowski.
Lap 164 was when the yellow waved again for a big wreck in turn 1. The 70 of Brad Teague got into the No.44 of Hal Martin and collected Jeffery Earnhardt and Austin Dillon. Reed Sorenson also had some damage. All of the leaders came in and Keselowski led the field off of pit road. Allgaier was too fast exiting and had to go to the back of the field for the restart.
They restarted the race and Smith and Keselowski were battling it out for the lead. That did not last long as the caution came out once again for debris.
The restart came on lap 183 with Smith,Keselowski and Harvick all battling for the lead. Smith and Keselowski were battling and caught a lap car and bumped fenders and Smith feel back to 4th. Keselowski was battling a tire rub and it finally blew out on the backstretch and Harvick over took the lead. Keselowski came to pit road to repair the car and the caution came out for debris the following lap.
The green waved with 100 to go and Harvick cleared Busch as he was battling Hornish Jr for second. Busch finally cleared him and set his sights on the No.33. Busch finally got to his bumper with 67 to go but could not finish the pass. Busch then tried the low side but could not work. They finally got into lap traffic and were really close in couple of turns but they both raced safely and Busch took the lead with 58 to go. Larson was getting faster and faster each lap and finally got to the leaders and were 3 wide battling for the lead when the lap car of Robert Richardson JR got in the way and Larson bumped into him. Larson got little damage but it will not hurt him and he will be alright.
The caution waved for the 8th time when the No.00 of Jason White blew a tire. Nobody came in except for Harvick, who was 2nd, and Smith. It will be Busch vs Larson on the restart.
Restarted the race with 27 to go and Busch kept the lead. Larson tried to get Busch loose but held his car off of the No.54 and let him go. Harvick, who came in to pit road during the caution, has made up three positions since the restart.
Larson ran the fastest lap of the race with seven to go and was on Busch’s bumper with six to go. Larson got to the corner of Busch’s car but did not wreck him on the final lap and Busch won it by .023 seconds!
