Berry and the Wood Brothers have delivered two of their strongest performances of the season over the past two weekends, and Richmond presents another opportunity to keep that run going. The three-quarter-mile D-shaped oval shares some characteristics with the 0.875-mile Iowa Speedway, where Berry and the No. 21 team showed strong pace throughout last weekend’s race.

“We’ve put together a couple of solid weekends in a row, and it feels like we’re continuing to build some momentum,” Berry said. “Richmond is a place I’ve always enjoyed racing and where I’ve had some good runs in the past, so I’m looking forward to getting back there.”

Berry has enjoyed success at Richmond throughout his career. In his first NASCAR Cup Series start at the track in 2023, while filling in for the injured Chase Elliott, Berry raced to a runner-up finish. “I used to think they didn’t correlate a lot. In the old asphalt getting to the patch in Iowa, I noticed some of the yaw moments you get turning into the corner in Richmond. When you run the bottom it’s closer to Richmond, but the higher you run, it isn’t conducive. But there are tendencies at Iowa you can make at Richmond.”

You’ve been dominant the last two years at Richmond Raceway. What has the No. 3 team figured out about the drivability of the car, unlike anyone else?

“I feel like I have a good feel for what I need in our No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/Winchester Supreme Long Range Chevrolet. We go to the sim, we do some runs and I am pretty adamant on what I am looking for. I guess I am giving good feedback to the guys, and they are delivering what we need. Richmond Raceway is all about managing tire heat and energy, and the way I approach it has just worked out over the long runs. And last year we could take off on short run. We’ve always been good on long run, and we’ve mixed in short run speed. Last year was the most dominant we have been, but we need to make it better, the other teams will come out swinging. They will have seen the data of what we’ve been doing, so you need to put it all together and hope it works out.”

You’re 144 points back from making The Chase. You’re still in the ball game, but can’t make any errors. How do you view the final three races?

“We want to go get a win with the No. 3 Bass Pro Shops/Winchester Supreme Long Range Chevrolet. If we could do that, it would be great for Chevrolet and RCR. We have fought through a lot of adversity this year losing Kyle. Making solid runs is what we’re focused on, and making sure we’re set up for a good following year, trying to learn as much as we can. We want to win, we want to get to Victory Lane and points follow that. If you can get to Victory Lane, you don’t need to worry about points.”

You have had such an amazing run at Richmond Raceway. What is it about that track, and how can you apply that to other tracks because it is amazing how you get around that racetrack?

“I would say Richmond Raceway was probably my worst track at one point in my career. I really struggled there. At one test I kind of figured out how to approach a particular groove or line around the track. I’ve kept that consistency ever since, and I’m also very decisive before we get there in the simulator. I have a feel for it there, as well. Of course I am trying to recreate that feeling at other places, but sometimes it just doesn’t work out. I think another track we have shown promise at was Iowa Speedway this past season, and I think there are similarities between the two aging surfaces. Any place that has high tire wear, I think I show up and have pretty good throttle control and that tends to help me. Just trying to be decisive on a line when I get to these tracks is pretty important.”

“I’ve been watching a lot of videos and SMT of what AD (Austin Dillon) does there to be good. I feel like I naturally run some of the line that he does. He does a little different stuff in Turns 3 and 4 to help with his exit, but the concept is close. I’ve always had confidence that Richmond could be a track that I could be halfway decent at, but we have struggled there at times on the O’Reilly (Auto Parts Series) side. Things have also not gone our way in some of those races, like cording a right front tire. To be good at Richmond though, you have to make the tires last. Tracks that have tire fall off are ones that I really enjoy racing at. It’s a short track but similar to Darlington or Homestead, tracks that I like. It has low grip, and your car needs good drive off to not burn the right rear off of our Morgan & Morgan Chevrolet.”

Lachlan Turner & Charli Cannon Set to Resume Captivating Rivalry, Title Fight

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (August 12, 2026) – After a near two-month midsummer break the Women’s Motocross Championship Powered by Synchrony (WMX) is set to make its anticipated return to action this weekend from Central New York’s legendary Unadilla MX, the oldest track in American motocross. The second half of the six-round championship awaits at this weekend’s ELF Lubricants Unadilla National, which will resume the captivating title fight between Altus Motorsports bLUcRU Yamaha’s Lachlan Turner and Quad Lock Honda’s Charli Cannon.

Unadilla was the site of last year’s closest battle between the championship leading duo and ultimately spawned the thrilling rivalry that has unfolded this summer. While Turner came out on top at the first two rounds at Hangtown and Thunder Valley, Cannon was able to seize the momentum heading into the break with a breakthrough first stateside victory at High Point in June. As a result, nine points separate Turner and Cannon with three rounds and six motos remaining.

Adding to the intrigue of the rivalry was their recent head-to-head showdown down under in Australia during the ProMX Championship, where Cannon was the reigning champion and Turner assumed the role of her primary challenger. While it was Turner who ultimately came away with the title, it wasn’t without tension as she and Cannon fought hard every step of the way and even came together at one point fighting for the win. Now, it’s Cannon’s turn to try and return the favor and attempt to unseat Turner from her WMX reign.

While all eyes will be on Turner and Cannon, they’ll also have to contend with a growing field of talent around them. Perhaps no rider is more poised to factor into the race for victory than SLR Honda’s Mayla Herrick. The Colorado native turned heads in her pro debut at High Point, when she grabbed the holeshot and put forth a wire-to-wire victory in her first ever WMX moto. She comes into Unadilla fresh off a championship-winning outing at the Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Championship at Loretta Lynn’s and has no shortage of confidence in her ability to go bar-to-bar against the best in the world.

Also not to be overlooked is Dusty Rocks Yamaha’s Jordan Jarvis, SLR Honda’s Mikayla Nielsen, and Partzilla Blaster Power PRMX Kawasaki’s Taylah McCutcheon. No rider in the WMX has more experience than Jarvis and it’s one of the primary reasons she sits third in the championship halfway through the season. Additional gate drops in the Canadian Triple Crown Series, where she currently sits atop the championship standings, and a runner-up effort at Loretta Lynn’s have Jarvis ready to do battle at Unadilla.

For Nielsen and McCutcheon, both riders have podium finishes to their name this summer and are two of the best starters in the WMX field. In fact, McCutcheon boasts the best starting average in the championship and was in the thick of the fight in Australia alongside Turner and Cannon. With the extended break to rest up and get some additional racing under their belt, both riders will be even better when the gate drops at Unadilla.

As arguably the most storied venue in American motocross, Unadilla provides a unique challenge with its sprawling, natural terrain layout that takes full advantage of the rolling hills of the Unadilla Valley. It has stayed true to its roots, which span 54 years, providing an old school feel that has blended perfectly into the motocross’ modern era. With its wide racing surface, multitude of elevation changes, and several of the most iconic obstacles in the sport, Unadilla will provide an opportunity for the stars of the WMX to hang it out, which should lend itself to the best racing of the season thus far.

On-track action for the WMX at Unadilla will span two days, with qualifying and the weekend’s first 12 Minutes + 1 Lap moto scheduled for Friday, August 14. The women will return to the track on Saturday, August 15, for a midday warm-up before contesting Moto 2 in between the first and second motos of the 450SMX and 250SMX classes.

JHN AT RICHMOND: John Hunter Nemechek has four starts at Richmond Raceway in the NASCAR Cup Series, with his highest finish being 25th in March 2024. In the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, he has made six starts at the track, earning three top-three finishes and a best finish of second earned in his last two races at the rack in April 2022 and April 2023. Nemechek also has two starts at Richmond in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series where he won in April 2021 and finished second in August 2022. He has led a total of 115 of the 500 total laps he’s run at Richmond in the series.

WINNER AT RICHMOND: Nemechek knows how to find victory lane at the short track of Richmond. In the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, he never finished worse than second at the .75-mile oval. In his first start at the track in April 2021, Nemechek started 18th after the lineup was set per the NASCAR rulebook. Nemechek first took the lead from Kyle Busch on Lap 100 and did so an additional two times to lead a total of 114 of 250 laps in the race. He passed Chandler Smith for the lead one final time on Lap 234 to capture the checkered flag by .307 seconds ahead of his team owner Kyle Busch.

T-MACK AT RICHMOND: Saturday’s race under the lights will be crew chief Travis Mack’s 12th NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond. His first outing came in September 2017 with Dale Earnhardt Jr. who finished 13th, Mack’s best finish at the track. He returned the following year in April 2018 with Kasey Kahne. After a short gap, Mack was back at Richmond in April 2021 with Daniel Suárez, where the duo competed for six total races between 2021 and 2023, with their highest finish being 16th, earned twice in April 2021 and April 2022. In the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, Mack has five starts at Richmond with Michael Annett, where they duo never finished worse than 14th and earned a best finish of seventh in the September 2020 doubleheader.

JONES RICHMOND STATS: Saturday night’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway will mark Erik Jones’ 17th NASCAR Cup Series start at the .75-mile oval. In his prior 16 starts, Jones earned a best finish of sixth in September 2017 after starting 10th. He has an additional four starts in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series at Richmond where he earned three top-five finishes. He never started worse than seventh in his O’Reilly Auto Parts Series career at Richmond, earning the pole in April 2016. His best finish of second came in September 2016 where he finished 6.453 seconds behind Kyle Busch after starting fourth.

ALEXANDER AT RICHMOND: The Cook Out 400 will mark Justin Alexander’s 15th NASCAR Cup Series start on top of the box at Richmond. In total, he has one win, two top-fives, and five top-10s in his career. His win came with Austin Dillon in August 2024 where the duo started sixth and led 35 laps. Alexander has an additional three starts as crew chief at Richmond in the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. He earned a best finish of fourth in April 2017 with Austin Dillon.

ERIK JONES QUOTE:
“Richmond has always been an interesting place for the No. 43 Dollar Tree Toyota team. It’s a very difficult short track that is very slick and really worn out, so it’s not easy to get your car driving good. It’s always a challenge, but we’ve also struggled to find some speed on short tracks. I think we were able to find some in Iowa last week, but our day was cut too short to really know if the changes we made helped during the race. We needed a few good weeks to help us in our battle for the Chase, but we didn’t get started on the best foot last weekend. We’ve got an uphill battle but we’re going to keep racing and trying to have the best days possible.”

JUSTIN ALEXANDER QUOTE:
“Really looking forward to Richmond this weekend. We made some good gains at Iowa this past weekend on our short track program, and the plan is to carry that into Richmond. Obviously with the big tire fall off at Richmond, we will have to adjust the setup some but were putting a lot of focus into this weekend so that we can optimize and execute every last detail to a high level. We still have three races left to get into the Chase, and we plan to start chipping away at the deficit in Richmond.”

JJ WINS AT RICHMOND: LEGACY MOTOR CLUB owner and seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson has 37 Cup Series starts under his belt at Richmond Raceway. In these starts, he has secured three victories, seven top-fives, and 16 top-10s as well at leading 461 laps. His first win came in May 2007 when Johnson started fourth and won with a .732 second margin of victory over Kyle Busch. He followed that up a couple months later in September 2007 when he started on the pole and led 104 laps to his second win where he beat Tony Stewart by 3.007 seconds. His final win at Richmond came in September 2008 when Johnson started third, led 32 laps, and bested Stewart once again by .365 seconds. Johnson has an additional five starts at Richmond in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series where he earned a best finish of 12th in May 2000 and May 2001.

KENSETH RICHMOND SUCCESS: LEGACY MOTOR CLUB competition advisor and 2003 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Matt Kenseth is also a winner at Richmond Raceway in the Cup Series. He has a total of 38 starts in the series at Richmond which resulted in two wins, six top-fives, and 16 top-10s. Kenseth led a total of 1,013 laps throughout his career. His first win came in September 2002 when he started 25th, led 134 laps, and bested Ryan Newman by 6.184 seconds. His next victory came in September 2015 when he started second, led 352 laps, and bested Kyle Busch by .951 seconds. Kenseth has an additional 21 starts at Richmond in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series where he collected 12 top-fives and 16 top-10s. He earned a best finish of second three times – May 2000, September 2001, and May 2007.

THE KING OF RICHMOND: Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion and LEGACY MOTOR CLUB ambassador Richard Petty owns 63 NASCAR Cup Series starts at Richmond Raceway in his career. The King earned a total of 13 wins, 34 top-fives, and 41 top-10s in his career at the short track. His first victory at Richmond came in April 1961 where he started on the pole and led 182 of 200 laps. His final win at the .75-mile track came in February 1975 where he once again started on the pole and led 444 of 500 laps to find victory lane.

TOYOTA DOMINATES AT RICHMOND: Toyota has a winning history at the short track of Richmond Raceway. Since 2015, Toyota has won 10 of the 20 NASCAR Cup Series races at Richmond. In total, Toyota has won 17 Cup Series races at the .75-mile oval.

RACE FOR REGULAR SEASON TITLE IN NHRA MISSION FOODS DRAG RACING SERIES DOWN TO TWO EVENTS

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 12, 2026) – Just two races remain in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series regular season, making it the perfect time to check out the points race for the regular season championship during NHRA’s 75th anniversary campaign.

With nearly $400,000 overall on the line to the drivers who finish first in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle, there’s plenty on the line next weekend in Brainerd and then to close out the regular season at the world’s biggest drag race, the prestigious Cornwell Quality Tools NHRA U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

Things have gotten ultra-tight in several categories, making Indy a must-see weekend to see who ends up on top.

TOP FUEL

What seemed like a Shawn Langdon runaway has quickly become a toss-up for the $150,000 prize. Langdon was on a torrid early-season streak, winning three races in a row at one point, but that hot streak has now shifted to his Kalitta Motorsports teammate, reigning world champion Doug Kalitta.

In a scene eerily similar to last year when Kalitta got hot mid-season and rode that to a second world title in three years, the veteran again appears to be peaking perfectly.

Kalitta won back-to-back races in Sonoma and Seattle, pulling to within a mere five points of his teammate. The duo has been dominant all year – especially when factoring in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge – and it could literally come down to the final run in Indy, which would make for quite the scenario at The Big Go.

FUNNY CAR

Without question, Funny Car will provide the wildest finish to crown the $150,000 regular season champion in Indy. A whopping four drivers are within just 64 points – or just more than two rounds in Indy – of leader Ron Capps, who like Langdon, has watched a comfortable points lead wither over the past two races.

He’s just 37 points ahead of Jack Beckman, who has been remarkably consistent in recent months, and 42 ahead of J.R. Todd, who rolled to the win in Seattle.

Jordan Vandergriff, who dominated in Sonoma, is only 54 points back, while four-time champ Matt Hagan trails Capps by 64 points. It’s going to make for a thrilling two-race stretch, as any of the five is capable of winning in Brainerd and Indy. Should all five stay close heading to Indy, we could be able to witness one of those classic Indy finishes on raceday.

PRO STOCK

This remains the Dallas Glenn and Greg Anderson show and it may remain a coin flip to the end. Anderson jumped back on top with his Seattle victory, but it’s just an eight-point difference between Glenn, the reigning regular season and overall world champion, and the six-time champ.

Greg Stanfield has surged to third and is 158 points back, but this likely remains a two-horse race at Indy.

Being that it’s basically a tie between the pair of KB Titan Racing teammates, this could come down to whoever goes further on raceday on Labor Day. Anderson has always run well at The Big Go, but Glenn, who is looking for his first Indy win, surely loves the sound of a second straight regular season title.

PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE

It’s been a minute since we’ve last seen the full Pro Stock Motorcycle category, which doesn’t return until Indy. Richard Gadson won in June in Norwalk, giving the reigning world champ a healthy 83-point lead over teammate Gaige Herrera.

That will be hard to overcome in one race, putting Gadson in the driver’s seat to win this championship for the first time. Angie and Matt Smith are 111 and 136 points back, respectively, and have enjoyed great seasons, but Gadson remains the clear favorite to take the lead into the Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

“I want to run as good as possible, but more importantly, I want to be able to execute on everything this weekend. With it being my third truck race, I at least have experienced a live pit road twice now, so I need to do my job there and on the track. I hope our TowneBank / Breeden Concrete Chevy is fast enough to make it where the pressure is put on me to perform. I don’t want to put a specific number on where I think we can finish, but I think if everything goes smoothly and we hit on it all throughout the race, it should be a good night for us.”

  • Quoting Eatmon: You had a pretty solid race last time at IRP, so what did you learn in that race that you can carry over into Richmond?

“I really learned a lot about how these trucks operate on short tracks in my last race at IRP, and I also learned what it’s like to race against the competitors out there. So taking that into consideration, I think we will have a better run at Richmond. I know Landon [Polinski] and all the guys on our No. 42 team will build a fast truck, so I want to go out there and put together another solid run with our Vetted Ventures Silverado.”

In his tenure driving the No. 44 truck, Pérez de Lara has picked up three top-10 finishes including a best result of seventh-place at St. Petersburg and Lime Rock. Pérez de Lara sits three positions higher in the point standings than he did at the same point last season.
  • Driver Points Outlook: Pérez de Lara’s 11th-place finish gained the driver two spots in points, up to 13th overall. With only two races left in the regular season, Pérez de Lara’s Chase hopes are on the line in his sophomore campaign. He is 10 points behind Jake Garcia in 12th-place and one point ahead of Brenden Queen in 14th-place ahead of Friday night’s race in Richmond. More importantly, however, he finds himself 42 points below cutline driver, Stewart Friesen.

“It’s definitely been a year where we have shown up with really good speed. I think we’ve shown a lot of our capability, but we deserve more than what we’ve gotten in terms of results. I’m looking forward to Richmond because our No. 44 team has been really strong on the short tracks lately and I feel like we have improved a lot in that area. I’m honestly surprised that I am excited to head there now, because just a month ago I wasn’t really looking forward to it. Despite losing a lap, the No. 45 team made significant progress with the handling after making adjustments in stage two. Lewis was fighting for the free pass in the final stage when two trucks made contact directly in front of him. With nowhere to escape, Lewis was collected in a hard crash. He was credited with a 35th-place finish after an early exit.
  • Owner Points Outlook: Lewis’ unfortunate finish at IRP dropped the No. 45 team to eighth-place in the owner point standings. The team is now eight points behind TRICON Garage’s No. 17 team in seventh-place, and 23 points ahead of Spire Motorsports’ No. 77 Chevrolet in ninth-place. With two races left until the Chase begins, the team has a 53-point cushion over the cutline.
  • Quoting Lewis: What are your thoughts about heading to Richmond for the first time?

“I think we can definitely translate some of the short track stuff that we’ve learned in previous races this year at Richmond. We’re getting better as a group, and Phil [Gould] and I have gotten on the same page in the last couple weeks to make a good run at it. Richmond seems like it’s always a fun one to race at. Everyone says that it’s one of the places that they always look forward to because of the tire fall-off and different things that happen throughout the race. I feel like it’s a driver’s track, so I’m looking forward to going there with our J.F. Electric Silverado on Friday.”
