“From the start, the car was pretty good off the truck even with the changes to the downforce and to the tire that we have for this race. But ultimately it felt pretty solid. I knew we had pace in it as I was building up to the run. I got a clean enough run so I made the most of it to put up a good lap. Hopefully we get a good place to start. We need to adjust a couple of things for turn four because it easy to get up there in the marbles, but I think is going to prove difficult for everyone. But so far, so good.”
Q. Scott McLaughlin, did the wind affect you at all in your spin in four?
SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: No. It was just pure driver problem. But, yeah, the wind is stronger than we had when we tested here. No, yeah, it wasn’t a major factor today.

SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: I definitely think it’s probably not as useful on an oval as it is on a road course. You still have the ability to use it. We still see a difference when you deploy it in some areas.
I believe people are going to use it in qualifying. People are going to use it in the race. But yeah, it’s certainly a lot easier to charge. Probably not a huge difference from a lap time perspective over 30, 40 laps.
It’s there if we need it, which is fun to use.
Q. Not much turnaround time between a night race tomorrow night and an early start on Sunday. You guys are racers, so you go out there and do what you need to do to win the race. How well-prepared do the teams have to be to have an extra car ready to go in case the Saturday night car gets in a crash?
SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: It’s certainly a tough schedule going from a night race into a late morning one. The teams have been prepared for it for a long time.
Ultimately, you never want to crash. Obviously, if you do, you have a shunt on Saturday. It puts a little bit of pressure on them. Every team on pit lane has some of the best people in the world. I’m sure it’s easy to put a car going. You don’t want to do it. It’s not easy, but it is what it is.
But yeah, the commitment is there, and they’re ready to go if need be.
Q. Was there any actual tire deg or is it just the layups? Was there legit tire deg?
SCOTT McLAUGHLIN: There’s some tire deg. Not as much as we’ve seen in the past. I think that’s more track specific than tires or whatnot.
Definitely, like Scottie said, I think it sucks a little bit that the repave is not great for us, but it is what it is. Everyone’s got the same track to deal with, so see how we go.

NEWTON, Iowa (Friday, July 12, 2024) – Twenty-seven NTT INDYCAR SERIES drivers had a lot to learn Friday at Iowa Speedway, and they had a short time to do it.
Friday’s 90-minute practice was the lone such session of the weekend as the series prepares for a pair of points-paying races: the Hy-Vee Homefront 250 presented by Instacart on Saturday at 8 p.m. ET and the Hy-Vee One Step 250 presented by Gatorade on Sunday at noon ET.
Both races will air live on NBC, Peacock and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
The drivers spent Friday learning how to navigate the track’s freshly paved corners that have made lap times significantly quicker. Additionally, there are nuances to using INDYCAR’s new hybrid technology for the first time on an oval track. The energy recovery system made its series debut last week at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, a road course race won by Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward.
Finally, there is an adaption to Firestone’s right-side tire compound that is different than what the field tested at the .894-mile short oval last month. And if that wasn’t enough, INDYCAR mandated a 10 percent reduction in downforce that has teams trying new chassis setups.
It added up to an adventurous practice, with no less than six drivers having tense moments, most in the latter part of the session.
The car of Andretti Global’s Marcus Ericsson took right-side damage after he lost control of the No. 28 Delaware Life Honda in Turn 3. The impact was first with the right rear, then with the right front. The winner of the 2022 Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge was not injured, but the accident happened on just his fourth lap of practice, which meant he won’t get another lap until Saturday’s qualifying session.
“Really strange,” Ericsson said of losing control. “I was so comfortable … a massive setback.”
Katherine Legge also had to scramble at that end of the track. Her No. 51 e.l.f. Cosmetics Honda of Dale Coyne Racing was passing Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s No. 45 Hy-Vee Honda driven by Christian Lundgaard in Turn 4 when the car began to slide. The driver who last raced at this track in 2012 was able to keep the car off the wall, preventing damage.
Santino Ferrucci saw his No. 14 AJ FOYT RACING/SEXTON PROPERTIES Chevrolet push nearly to the wall in Turn 4. Moments later, Agustin Canapino lost control of his No. 78 Juncos Hollinger Racing Chevrolet in Turn 2 while following Will Power in the No. 12 Verizon Business Team Penske Chevrolet. Neither car touched the wall.
Returning to pit road, Canapino took light contact from Scott Dixon and his No. 9 PNC Bank Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. Dixon said he mistook Canapino for the team’s sister car, driven by Romain Grosjean, and didn’t realize Canapino was pitting. Again, neither car took significant damage.
Finally, as the session was ending, Scott McLaughlin spun his No. 3 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet off Turn 4 as Legge did. He, too, got away without damaging the car.
“That proves to kids growing up, like don’t give up if you’re spinning,” McLaughlin said.
McLaughlin said he lost control as a result of trying the outside lane, a part of the track where the older surface doesn’t have as much grip. That’s also where excess tire rubber builds up, he said, something all drivers will have to watch for in the races to come.
McLaughlin finished with the session’s fastest lap at 185.891 mph. He will be one of the drivers trying to break Helio Castroneves’ track-record speed of 186.809 mph set in 2014 when NTT P1 Award qualifying is held Saturday at 3:45 p.m. ET (Peacock, INDYCAR Radio Network).
Each car-and-driver combination will get two timed laps, the first lap determining the starting position for Race 1 and the second establishing grid position for Race 2.
Other drivers to watch are series leader Alex Palou, who had the second-fastest lap in Friday’s practice in the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda and O’Ward, who drives the No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. They turned laps of 185.536 and 184.154 mph, respectively.
David Malukas (No. 66 AutoNation/Arctic Wolf Honda of Meyer Shank Racing) and Alexander Rossi (No. 7 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet) rounded out Friday’s top five at 184.112 and 183.784 mph.
Josef Newgarden (No. 2 Hitachi Astemo Team Penske Chevrolet) won both of these races last year. His quickest lap Friday ranked 15th.

SIX PACK: With six races to go in the regular season, Kyle Larson leads the NASCAR Cup Series regular season standings by 11 points over Hendrick Motorsports teammate Chase Elliott. Larson is tied for the most wins (three) and top-five finishes (eight) this season while he tops the series in laps led (755) and pole positions (five). REGULAR SEASON UPDATE: With just six races remaining in the NASCAR Cup Series regular season, Chase Elliott sits second in the driver standings, just 11 points behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kyle Larson. He has one win (Texas Motor Speedway), seven top-five finishes and nine top-10s in 20 starts. Elliott’s 10.6 average finish leads the field and is his second-best through 20 races in his career behind only the 2022 season in which he won the regular season championship. The Dawsonville, Georgia, native has spent the seventh-most laps in the top five, fourth-most laps in the top 10 and has the seventh-most stage points earned this year.
POCONO PERFORMANCE: This weekend, NASCAR heads to Pocono Raceway, where Elliott has 14 premier series starts. He’s earned one win (2022), four top-five finishes, nine top-10s and led 67 laps at the 2.5-mile venue. In last year’s Cup race at the “Tricky Triangle,” the 28-year-old driver took the checkered flag in the 10th position. CHICAGO BULLISH: After suffering a mechanical issue Saturday, William Byron started at the tail of the field Sunday at the Chicago Street Race. Despite battling the elements and having to change strategies on the fly, he powered his way through the field, dodging the chaos to finish eighth in Sunday’s event.
24 IN ‘24: Byron’s 2024 NASCAR Cup Series season started off hot with three wins (tied for the most) including at the DAYTONA 500. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native has six top-five finishes (tied for the sixth-most) and has 11 top-10s (tied for the second-most). He has the third-best average starting position (10.05) and average finish (13.25). After 20 races, he is now sixth in the 2024 regular season standings and has 16 playoff points.
PREVIEWING POCONO: In his 10 Cup Series starts at Pocono, Byron has two pole awards (June 2019 and July 2023), as well as two top-five finishes and five top-10s with 130 laps led. He holds a 9.9 average finish at the Long Pond, Pennsylvania, track, which is one of six venues where Byron has led more than 100 laps and not won.
PAST POCONO WINNER: Byron isn’t a stranger to victory lane at the “Tricky Triangle.” After starting from the pole position in 2016, he dominated the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race there, leading 44 out of 60 laps before capturing the checkered flag.
TRICKY TRICKY TRICKY: Crew chief Rudy Fugle has four Cup Series starts at Pocono Raceway. His best showing with Byron and the No. 24 team came in 2021 when the group finished third after starting second in the first race of a doubleheader. After that initial event, Fugle scored back-to-back 12th-place finishes and a 14th at the Cup level. The Livonia, New York, native has had more success at the 2.5-mile track, though. In seven Truck Series starts, Fugle has visited victory lane there two times, going back-to-back with Byron in 2016 and Christopher Bell in 2017. His truck drivers racked up two pole awards, four top-five finishes, five top-10s and 71 laps led at Pocono.

It will mark the third race for Byron in the No. 17 Chevy in 2024.
MCSWAIN MANIA: For Byron’s four Xfinity Series races in 2024, No. 24 lead engineer Brandon McSwain will serve as crew chief. In his debut at Phoenix Raceway earlier this season, the No. 17 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet Camaro ran up front before being collected in an on-track incident. Then at Darlington Raceway, Byron suffered a flat tire that put him behind early before rallying to an 11th-place finish. McSwain also worked as an engineer for Byron during his 2017 Xfinity Series championship season with Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports.
PIT ROAD PROWESS: After 20 races in the 2024 season, the No. 24 pit crew continues to find success. The five-person crew ranks sixth for the fastest average four-tire pit stop (10.947 seconds). The No. 24 pit crew consists of Spencer Bishop (jackman), Jeff Cordero (front-tire changer), Orane Ossowski (rear-tire changer), Ryan Patton (tire carrier) and Landon Walker (fueler).

WIN-DY CITY: Despite having a runner-up finish in the DAYTONA 500 and 10 top-10 results before Sunday’s Chicago Street Race, Alex Bowman entered the weekend looking for the next step: finding victory lane. After finishing sixth in stage one and second in stage two, the 31-year-old driver did just that. In the final stanza, the Tucson, Arizona, native stayed out on wet tires when pit road opened and passed the leader within one lap. He held off competitors racing on slicks to take the checkered flag by three seconds in the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. It was the eighth win of his Cup Series career and clinched his spot in the 2024 playoffs.
HARRIS BROUGHT IT HOME: Ally Racing team crew chief Blake Harris earned his first Cup Series victory Sunday at Chicago. The race had several delays for standing water and NASCAR officials made competitors aware that the white flag would be thrown at 8:20 p.m. local time regardless of the lap count. As the track dried out, Harris opted to keep his driver on the racing surface with wet-weather tires while the front runners pitted for slicks. The move resulted in valuable track position, which Bowman was able to use in the final laps to lead eight circuits and prove victorious. After 49 races together, the duo has earned one win, one pole position, eight top-five finishes, 19 top-10s and 95 laps led.
FIRST WIN FOR FRESH FACES: In addition to Harris’ first win as a crew chief, the Windy City performance marked the first Cup victory for seven members of the Ally Racing team: lead engineer George Spencer, tire specialist Collin Hoeffner, engine tuner Gage Wenzel, setup mechanic Travis Braden, tire carrier Brandon Grier, jackman Allen Holman and rear-tire changer Andrew Bridgeforth. Spencer, Hoeffner, Wenzel and Braden are in their first year on the No. 48 team. It is the third year for Holman and the second for Grier and Bridgeforth.

Turn one comes after that long straightaway and you’re hauling the mail getting into that corner. There’s a large bump right where you want to brake and lift. That makes it hard for you to set the car and make it do what you want it to. It’s a pretty wide turn and usually your car gets tight there, so it makes it hard to turn and then not be too free in the other corners. After the track was repaved a few years ago, the turn two tunnel is starting to get worn out again, which makes it really treacherous. Meanwhile turn three is the flattest and leads back into the long straightaway. You have to not be free getting into that corner and get off really, really well. Traditionally you have to be really good in turn three. It will be difficult but that’s why I love that place.”

Thomas Annunziata, one of the country’s most promising young racers, will take on Pocono Raceway’s Tricky Triangle this weekend with the support of one of the nation’s leading automobile dealerships.
In Saturday’s Explore The Pocono Mountains 225 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Pocono, Annunziata will ride with the colors of Criswell Chevrolet Buick GMC, a nationally recognized and respected dealership located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Annunziata, who turned 19 June 14, will be in the JD Motorsports No. 4 Chevrolet in his first Xfinity Series start at Pocono, a very fast triangular track that poses some of the toughest challenges in the world of oval racing.
“With the backing of Criswell Chevrolet and the solid support of the Criswell family, we’re expecting a lot at Pocono,” said Annunziata, a successful driver in Trans Am and ARCA racing who’s knocking on the door of NASCAR’s top series. “I’ve never had a partnership as strong as this one with Criswell. They bring their best every day at their dealership, and I’m sure we’ll represent them well at Pocono.”
Although Criswell is located in Maryland, north of Washington, D.C., its reputation is nationwide. He raced in early June with JDM at Sonoma Raceway in California, finishing 34th after transmission problems. In three ARCA races this year, he has scored a pair of top-five finishes, including a close second place at Daytona International Speedway in February.
“We hope to keep building on what we’ve done already this year,” Annunziata said. “Racing for me at the moment is about getting in the track time and piling up the laps and learning everything I can. With Criswell’s support, we can go further faster.”
JD Motorsports has been effective in helping young drivers reach their dreams. Among those who have piloted JDM cars are Ross Chastain, Landon Cassill, Sheldon Creed, Jeremy Clements, Mike Wallace and Joe Nemechek.

Davey Hamilton Jr. has announced there will be an addition to his Open Wheel Showdown events. In addition to the 2024 Las Vegas and Irwindale events, the Children’s Dream Fund Open Wheel Showdown will race at Citrus County Speedway in Inverness, Florida on February 27th – March 1, 2025.
This stop on the Open Wheel Showdown tour will feature only winged pavement sprint cars, and not national midgets and super modifieds like previous Open Wheel Showdown events. Hamilton also indicated the Children’s Dream Fund Open Wheel Showdown is potentially the start of a traveling series of winged pavement sprint cars across the country in 2025.
“This is great for our sport,” Hamilton said. “JJ (Dutton) called me and told me his ideas, and it was all about putting the logistics together to bring our partners and staff in for this. This is not only good for Open Wheel Showdown, but it’s exciting to do it same weekend as the INDYCAR Series race at St. Petersburg, so we can have those guys come out and support what we’re doing. My goal is to see Open Wheel Showdown grow into a national tour in 2025 and this is a great kick off to it.”
Purse and event format will be announced soon. Plans include a Thursday practice night followed by two complete nights of racing. If a driver can win both nights, a bonus will be awarded and will also be announced soon.
Registration for the event will start after the 2024 finale of Open Wheel Showdown. The Las Vegas Open Wheel Showdown will be November 14-16, 2024, followed by Open Wheel Showdown Los Angeles on November 22-24, 2024 at Irwindale Speedway.
This Children’s Dream Fund Open Wheel Showdown is a collaboration between JJ Dutton, Citrus County Speedway owner William Ray, and Davey Hamilton Jr.

Rules, race format, and officiating will all be done by Open Wheel Showdown. Tires will be available on site through Open Wheel Showdowns partner Hoosier Racing Tire. The event will be broadcast on Speed Sport.

(July 12, 2024) Jason Hathaway, driver of the #3 ASSA Abloy/Leland Chevrolet, competed in the highly anticipated NASCAR Canada Series race at Ohsweken Speedway on Thursday night, marking round six of the 13-race schedule. This event was particularly notable as is the only dirt track race of the season and was Hathaway’s first-ever experience on a dirt oval.
Determined to make the most of his inaugural dirt track outing, Hathaway maximized his track time during the 30-minute practice session, continuously adapting and learning the nuances of dirt racing. His efforts in his heat race to set the grid for the feature race further showcased his determination and adaptability as he worked hard to gain valuable experience.
Starting from the 12th position in the 100-lap Freshstone Dirt Classic, Hathaway battled fiercely throughout the race. Despite the challenging conditions and the intense competition, he managed to secure a 14th place finish in the #3 ASSA Abloy/Leland Chevrolet. Although the result was not as high as he had hoped, Hathaway’s resilience and dedication were evident throughout the race.
Through six races of the 2024 season, Hathaway remains firmly in fifth place in the overall championship standings.

TV & Live Streaming The Freshstone Dirt Classic will be broadcast on TSN Saturday, July 20th at 2PM and on RDS2, Saturday, July 27th at 5:30PM. All races are streamed live on TSN+ and through FloRacing in the United States.
The 2024 NASCAR Canada Series will consist of 13 total races in six provinces on a mixture of oval tracks along with road and street courses. The E.H.R. team now heads west and returns to action Saturday July 20th at Sutherland Automotive Speedway in Saskatoon, SK.
