Wall Scrape Lands Rookie Burton His First DNF in the Land of Oz

[media-credit name=”kansasspeedway.com” align=”alignright” width=”199″][/media-credit]Kansas City, Kansas (April 23, 2012) – Just one week after a solid run at Rockingham Speedway, Burton was hoping to continue the team’s momentum with a solid performance in Kansas, only to find himself out of the race on lap one and into the wall landing himself his first DNF early on in the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season.

After a promising first practice finishing in the 13th spot, Burton struggled in the final practice with speed, only to find in a post practice team inspection that the #27 Hillman Racing Team was needing a motor change. The team went to work feverishly changing the motor just before the garage closed on Friday night leaving Burton unable to put any laps on his new motor, leaving some concern for Burton on how his qualifying sessions would go on Saturday morning.

Burton’s qualifying attempt was not what he was hoping for as he missed his marks going into his second lap being to high in turn three catching himself needing to hang on to the truck as the back end came out on him. Burton did a great job saving the truck not putting it into the wall, however he ended up further back than he would have hoped for in his qualifying run beginning the race from the 25th position.

Burton unfortunately made a rookie mistake at the start of Saturday’s SFP 250 at Kansas Speedway not letting the air pressure build up in his tires as he entered turn three too deep in the corner sending his #27 State Water Heater Chevy into the outside wall of turns three and four. Following that scuff into the wall, Burton was just not able to recover and steer the truck and slammed the wall again in the next set of corners bringing a disappointing end to his day at the Kansas Speedway.

“I learned an expensive lesson today”, said Burton. “I disappointed myself, my team, family and fans by just not realizing that my air pressure was not where it needed to be as I hit the turn too deep sending me into the wall.” I definitely appreciate all of the advice I’ve been receiving and have a much deeper appreciation for having the patience I need and I am looking forward to our next race in Charlotte.”

Next up for Burton and his #27 State Water Heaters Chevy is the race at the NC Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, May 18th, 2012. SPEED TV will be broadcasting live beginning at 7:30pm EST, with the pre race NCWTS SETUP show followed by the green flag dropping at 8:00pm EST.
