HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (June 3, 2013) – Travis Kvapil and the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry team finished 39th at Dover (Del.) International Speedway (“The Monster Mile”) on Sunday afternoon. After getting caught speeding on pit road during their first pit stop of the day, the team battled back and had their car handling well when engine failure ended their day just before the halfway point.
In their first of two stops at “The Monster Mile” in 2013, Kvapil and his BK Racing team worked hard to dial in their No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota Camry during the three practice sessions at the one-mile oval. The team posted the 22nd quickest lap time during final practice and prepared for time trials. Kvapil got loose during his qualifying lap to significantly slow his effort and secured the 38th starting position.
With the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Toyota a bit too loose early in the race, the BK Racing team utilized the opening pit stop on lap 70 to dial in the handling of their Camry. Kvapil was caught speeding while entering pit road during the green flag pit stop. The driver had to serve a pass-thru penalty, which proved to be a setback on the quick one-mile oval where a lap can be completed in less than 25 seconds.
Following the stop, the No. 93 Burger King / Dr. Pepper Camry was handling well and the team began devising their plan to gain track positions. However, by lap 165 Kvapil was pulling into the garage after the No. 93 machine experienced engine failure and brought an early end to the BK Racing team’s day.
“We just didn’t have luck on our side today,” commented Kvapil following the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks at Dover International Speedway. “They call Dover International Speedway ‘The Monster Mile’ for a reason, and today our team experienced the reason. The Burger King / Dr. Pepper team did a great job adjusting our Toyota Camry throughout the entire weekend, and we had the car handling really well after that first pit stop. Unfortunately, our motor just gave out a little too early today. I still think our team continues to get stronger every week. The guys will take this engine back to the shop and look it over closely to determine what happened; we will get better.”
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will visit Pocono (Pa.) Raceway for their first of two races this season at “The Tricky Triangle” on Sunday, June 9. Fans can tune in on SPEED on Friday, June 7, for practice (1:30 p.m. EDT) and qualifying (3:30 p.m. EDT). Two additional practice sessions from the 2.5-mile triangle will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. EDT and will also be broadcast on SPEED.
