INDYCAR NEWS AND NOTES – Jan. 27, 2014

Today’s IndyCar Series and Mazda Road to Indy headlines:

1. Carpenter honored with Pat O’Connor Award

2. Aleshin to take rookie oval test at Homestead

1. Carpenter honored with Pat O’Connor Award: IndyCar Series team owner/driver Ed Carpenter received the Pat O’Connor Award from the Hoosier Auto Racing Fans during its annual banquet Jan. 26.

Presented for the first time in 1968, the Pat O’Connor Award is voted on by the executive board of HARF and presented to a Midwest driver who “lives up to the spirit and the ideals on which this award is based.” When the criteria for this award was being formed, HARF members said they would look for such things as devotion, cooperation and constant effort to make auto racing the sport of which they are all proud.

O’Connor, born in North Vernon, Ind., suffered fatal injuries in the 1958 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. He was 29 years old. O’Connor started from the pole the previous May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 1956 USAC champion was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1995.

Some of the past winners include Rollie Beale (1972), Larry Rice (1973 and 2009), Mel Kenyon (1974), Lee Kunzman (1978), Tom Bigelow (1984), Joe Saldana (1985), Steve Chassey (1986), Jeff Gordon (1992), Dave Darland (1999), Eddie Cheever Jr. (2000) and Sarah Fisher (2010).

“I found out about the award a few months ago and I really wasn’t sure what the award was about. So I did a little research on it and found out how big of an honor it is to win,” Carpenter said. “I knew about Pat O’Connor, his great driving and great personality when I won the Pat OConnor Memorial Classic at Salem, Ind., in the USAC Sprint cars. Outside of IMS, Salem Speedway is still one of my favorite racetracks.

“To know what Pat felt about that place, I feel like I share something with him there. For the merits of the award, I really need to thank my wife, Heather, for this award. Ten years ago I’m not sure I had the right qualities to be able to accept an award like this. She has really made me a better person and I am grateful for that.  Our state, Indiana, is really blessed to have many great racing fans and they support the drivers, teams, series and tracks through the years. I thank everyone involved in HARF and everyone who is part of this award.”

2. Aleshin to take rookie oval test at Homestead: Mikail Aleshin got a taste of racing on an oval during the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The Russian IndyCar Series driver will see more as he participates in a rookie oval test Jan. 28 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“It will be very important for me because I never have tested on oval so I am looking forward to it,” said Aleshin, who will make his series debut in the No. 55 SPM Racing car March 30 in the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. “We had some time working on this test with the team at the shop so I’m quite happy to say that the team has really helped me a lot to get all the details fast.

“Ovals will be something really special for me. I’m looking forward to the start of the season.”

Aleshin co-drove a Ferrari 458 with Mika Salo, Boris Rotenberg and Sergey Zlobin at Daytona to a fourth place in the GT Daytona class.
