’95 Percent of Drivers Are Boiling Mad’ at Push-and-Shove Short Track
STATESVILLE, MARCH 25, 2014 – David Gilliland, driver of the No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford, comments on racing at Martinsville Speedway:
“Martinsville is a unique track. Next to Bristol, it’s probably the longest day in racing, for me anyway. You get done with that race and 95 percent of the drivers are boiling mad. The guy that won, of course, is pretty happy. Everybody else has been knocked and shoved and pushed around.
“It’s just one of those deals where, going into it, you know you’re going to get run into — probably multiple times. And you’re going to run into people. So, you’ve got to know that going in, and you’ve got to try to control your emotions in the car. That’s the most challenging part of Martinsville Speedway, in my opinion.
“Brakes are pretty important. We had some brake issues the past couple years. But after coming out of Phoenix, we felt like that was well behind us. We had no issues there. So, we’re looking forward to going to Martinsville and running the way we know we can without brakes issues.”
JUST THE FACTS: Gilliland has 15 Sprint Cup career starts at Martinsville Speedway … His top finish at the .526-mile oval is 19th (2010).
