Austin Dillon, No. 3 Dow Chevrolet SS
Race Notes and Quotes:

This Week’s Dow Chevrolet at Michigan International Speedway … Austin Dillon will pilot Chassis No. 512 in the Pure Michigan 400. This is the same Chevrolet SS that Dillon raced to a 25th-place finish at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July.

Dillon at Michigan International Speedway … In his sophomore season on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series tour, Michigan International Speedway ranks as one of Dillon’s most seasoned venues with six starts at the two-mile track. He finished 20th in June 2015 in his most recent Sprint Cup Series start at MIS. In the August 2014 event, he earned a 22nd-place finish after suffering mechanical issues, and finished 30th in June 2014 despite running in the top 10 for most of the race after making a series of unscheduled pit stops in the closing laps because of a flat tire.  In August 2013, he subbed for Tony Stewart in the No. 14 Chevrolet, finishing 14th, and raced an American Ethanol-sponsored No. 33 Chevrolet in June, finishing 11th. In June 2012, Dillon finished 24th after starting 22nd in a No. 33 Chevrolet.

Welcome, Dow … Returning primary sponsor of the No. 3 Chevrolet SS, Dow enters its second season with RCR and driver Austin Dillon. Get to the Points … Dillon ranks 21st in the championship point standings heading into the Pure Michigan 400.

In the Rear View … Despite qualifying in the top 10 and running in the top five during the beginning portion of the race, Dillon earned a 36th-place finish at Watkins Glen International after losing a lap following a mid-race spin after contact from another competitor.

Double Duty … Dillon is scheduled to race the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet for GMS Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Michigan International Speedway on Saturday afternoon. Watch the 2011 Camping World Series Champion live on FOX Sports 1 beginning at 1 p.m. ET.

Supplies will be distributed to kids in need in the community for the new school year through local United Way agencies. The event is free and open to the public, hours are from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

AUSTIN DILLON QUOTE:
What are your thoughts on racing at Michigan International Speedway with the new aero package?
“It will be interesting to see how things play out. Hopefully it’s a little easier to drive in traffic. We were a little loose in traffic at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and I think at Michigan International Speedway the field will be more packed up than at Indianapolis. So it will be an interesting race like the other packages have been. I’m definitely looking forward to getting there. It’s one of my favorite tracks. Hopefully we can just put ourselves out front and we will not have to worry about traffic. It’s one of the fastest places we go all year. We probably cut our top speed there a couple of years ago. It’s one of those places that has a lot of speed to it.”

Paul Menard, No. 27 Richmond / Menards Chevrolet SS
Race Notes and Quotes:

This Week’s Richmond / Menards Chevrolet at Michigan International Speedway … Crew chief Justin Alexander and the No. 27 team have prepped chassis No. 510 for this weekend’s 400-mile event at Michigan International Speedway. This Chevrolet SS is race proven making two appearances already in 2015; once at Charlotte Motor Speedway (Start: 23 / Finish: 14) and Kentucky Speedway (Start: 14 / Finish: 15).

Stats in the Irish Hills … In 18 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at the two-mile track, Menard has four top-five and six top-10 finishes as well as two top-five and six top-10 starts. He’s completed 98.7 percent of laps in competition, including 15 laps led. Menard also has 10 NASCAR XFINITY Series starts which include one win (June 2013), four top-five and eight top-10 finishes. He has four top-five and five top-10 starts with one pole award.

Rookie Stripe … Alexander has impressive stats in his first year as a full-time Sprint Cup Series crew chief. In 27 races with Menard, Alexander has led the team to one top-five, 13 top-15 and 18 top-20 starts. He’s also collected 20 top-20, 17 top-15 and three top-five finishes. Alexander is the first three-time winner of the MOOG Problem Solver of the Race award this season.

Where Do You Stand … Menard sits 11th in the Sprint Cup Series driver point standings and currently holds the 13th position in the Chase for the Sprint Cup Grid with only four races left before the Chase begins in September.

Last Time in Michigan … Menard started the June event at MIS from the 17th spot and methodically raced his way into the top 10 before rain shortened the 400-mile race. The No. 27 team was scored in eighth, earning their fourth top-10 finish of the season.

PAUL MENARD QUOTE:
Why is Michigan International Speedway suited to your driving style?
“I like to roll the car through the center, not really point and shoot. With the wide corners and grippy surface, Michigan is a perfect track for that. I’m ready to get back there this weekend and take another shot at it for a good finish.”
Ryan Newman, No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet SS
Race Notes and Quotes:

This Week’s Caterpillar Chevrolet SS at Michigan International Speedway … Ryan Newman will drive chassis No. 511 in the Pure Michigan 400. This Chevrolet has been utilized five times this season at Auto Club Speedway (Start: 9/Finish: 5), Texas Motor Speedway (Start: 7/Finish: 12) Kansas Speedway (Start: 15/Finish: 10), Dover International Speedway (Start: 17/Finish: 18) and Kentucky Speedway (Start: 26/Finish: 20).

Newman at MIS … Newman will make his 499th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start when the Series returns to the Irish Hills of Michigan this weekend. In 28 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events at MIS, Newman scored back-to-back victories in the fall 2003 and spring 2004 events. The “Rocket Man” also owns a pole award. In total, he’s recorded five top-five and seven top-10 finishes. He has led 97 laps in competition. The South Bend, Ind., native has an average start of 14th and average finish of 17th. And in four XFINITY Series starts at the speedway, he visited victory lane two times (2001, 2005).

About Caterpillar … For nearly 90 years, Caterpillar Inc. has been making sustainable progress possible and driving positive change on every continent. Customers turn to Caterpillar to help them develop infrastructure, energy and natural resource assets. Caterpillar is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives. The company principally operates through its three product segments – Resource Industries, Construction Industries and Energy & Transportation – and also provides financing and related services through its Financial Products segment. For more information, visit caterpillar.com. To connect with us on social media, visit caterpillar.com/social-media.

Get to the Points … Newman’s 20th-place finish at Watkins Glen International places him 13th in the championship point standings and 14th in the Chase Grid with just four races remaining before the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship begins.

Last Time Around at Michigan … Back in June, Newman was on mark for a top-10 finish, but three rain delays in the first 50 laps placed teams on different pit cycles and unfortunately, short changed crew chief Luke Lambert’s strategy. With 62 laps remaining and Newman scored in 18th place, rain fell for a third time forcing NASCAR to call the race.

RYAN NEWMAN QUOTES:
What is the key to Michigan when you return for the second time this season?
“Michigan is so big and round that you have to carry good corner speed because it plays into the straightaway speed. Downforce, horsepower and fuel mileage once again come into play and frankly is in play at all of our big tracks.”

What is the hard thing to figure out about MIS?
“Usually, when are we going to run out of fuel? At some point in the race, you are trying to figure out a window to put yourself in to make it to the end. Fuel mileage is such a big part of it. You just never know, especially when you get rain showers there like last time. It could end up being a rain-shortened race so basically rain and fuel mileage are the hardest things to figure out and unfortunately, we ended up on the wrong end of the strategy last time. What could have been a top-10 ended up being a disappointing 18th-place finish with a fast Chevrolet.”

The high drag rules package returns to Michigan International Speedway, what are your thoughts after running it at Indianapolis Motor Speedway?
“The verdict is still out obviously for Michigan, but I am not sure if it will be much different. We will just have to wait and see. I’m all for trying it. I’m not sure if it’s the right way to go, but the only way to know for sure is to race it. The key here is to keep working towards our goal of providing the best racing possible for our fans.

“I really don’t think there will be any carry over from Indy to Michigan because they are so different, but it’s good to get another read on this aero package to see if it is the right thing for us.”

BRIAN SCOTT QUOTES:
What is special to you about Mid-Ohio?
“It started with the Nationwide Children’s Hospital teaming up to give us patient champions. We’ve had some great champions in the past that have been really fun to support and I’m looking forward to meeting our champion this year and having a good race. And, hopefully getting our champion in Victory Lane.”

Are you looking forward to going back to Mid-Ohio after a strong run last season?
“I really like the road courses. Mid-Ohio was a great last year for our Shore Lodge Chevrolet team. We qualified third, led a lot of the race, were in contention to win and brought home a third-place finish. I feel really confident going back to Mid-Ohio that we have a lot of speed and can contend as a team for the victory again.”

What is special about Mid-Ohio compared to the other road-course races?
“The road courses all have some of their own characteristics. Mid-Ohio seems to be the oldest surface and probably the most wore out. Then there are some interesting sections on the backstretch where you actually have some blind rises and jumps where you have to kind of come over and you don’t know what’s going to happen back there. That’s a real technical part of the race track, but also a lot of fun.”

BRENDAN GAUGHAN QUOTE:
“Mid-Ohio is probably one of the three most technical road courses in America. It is a standard-true traditional road course. Apex is right, not a lot of run-offs. If you make a mistake, you get a penalty. That’s what I love about true road-course racing, you have those big penalties. It’s a super fun place to race. Road America has a big elevation change; Laguna Seca has a big elevation change; Mid-Ohio has undulation. You go through turns 3, 4, 5, and 6. You’re up-down, up-down, up-down. It’s very unique how that goes. It makes you have to learn to pick spots off in the distance over the crest of a hill. You have to learn to pick objects that stay in one place like a telephone pole. Something that isn’t going to move during the course of the race. It’s just a lot of fun to race at Mid-Ohio.”
