TEAM QUOTES:

Dover International Speedway: “Dover will always be one of my favorite tracks because it’s fun and a track you can really attack with the No. 47 Hungry Jack Chevrolet SS,” Allmendinger said. “The speed there is kind of amazing to me. It’s just so fast.  It’s a cool racetrack and always will be. As it gets a little older, it becomes a little tougher.”

Rough feel around the track: “It gets rubber built up late in practice and when it builds up it makes your car feel really rough around the track,” Allmendinger said. “Lately, it’s been tough in practice, just judging how much rubber will be built up to adjust your car for the race.”

Front end: “We’ve been led by the front end of the car and it’s tight no matter what we seem to do,” Allmendinger said. “We’ve fought it all year, but it has got worse these last few months. We just can’t get the front to turn like we need to. Then that’s where you try to adjust around it to help it by doing stuff to the rear of the car. We keep trying to fix our front ends, but once you get to a certain point you run out of things to do to the front and you go to rear of the car and then you run out of time. We still have to address the problem of us being too tight and being on top of the track.”

Trying to improve: “We are going to keep using these last races to figure out where we are lacking,” Allmendinger said. “Sure, we want to have a good finish with our No. 47 Hungry Jack Chevrolet SS, but at the same time we have to try some new things to improve.”

Betterment of the team: “It’s been a tough year for different reasons,” Allmendinger said. “The great thing is that my boss (Tad Geschickter) works so hard. We have great things in the pipeline and great people. There’s no doubt in my mind this time next year that the team is going to be way stronger and running way better. It’s tough because you don’t really ever have time to sit down and say, ‘Okay, where have we lost our way?’ Every week, you’re basically trying to wrap up the previous weekend to get ready for the next weekend. That’s what is tough about this schedule. When it’s going well, it’s awesome, but when you are struggling it’s hard to step back and find your way. We will keep digging for sure. We will be way better going into next year. You really find out what kind of team you are when it’s not going so well.”

A good mix: “To me, Dover is one of the best tracks that is basically a short track and intermediate track rolled into one,” crew chief Brian Burns said. “It’s an action-packed track. It’s got high banking, high loads like Bristol (Motor Speedway), but it’s also big enough and fast enough to have characteristics of the bigger intermediate tracks like Charlotte (Motor Speedway). When you go to a bigger track, aero is important and when you go to a smaller track, mechanical is important. This is an even mix of all the stuff that you would look for at different tracks. So, it’s kind of rolling everything up into one.”

Working closely with RCR: “Dover is an exciting racetrack for fans and it’s one of those places that will present a lot of challenges for race teams,” Burns said. “It’s different from all the other tracks on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series circuit. Actually, it’s a track that suits AJ’s driving style. We were not as good as we would have liked to have been the last time there. We’re really working closely with Richard Childress Racing for this race weekend and leaning on them more to help us get better from the previous time out there.”

Making the best of races remaining: “We’re still treating the last part of the season as a testing opportunity everywhere we go to really be better for next year,” Burns said. “These Chase cars have to be conservative and not really go outside the box because every race is important to them. They are racing each three races as a season in hopes of advancing. So, they have to be careful. They have to go with what they have been doing all year and not make any mistakes. We have the chance to think outside the box and try some new things. We’re taking more risks to make ourselves better.”

Not giving up: “Right now, usually, when we unload on Friday’s we have a good race car,” Burns said. “For us, it’s just continuing to work closely with our driver and our alliance partners to keep up with the track to be just as good ending happy hour and starting the race as we unloaded off the hauler.”

Chassis 429: “This is the car that ran well for us at Las Vegas (Motor Speedway)” Burns said. “Actually, it’s performed well for us when we’ve used it.”
