NASCAR, Watkins Glen International Reach 5-year Sanction Agreement; 2016 race weekend announced

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (October 26, 2015) – Watkins Glen International is proud to announce that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will return to Western New York for the Cheez-It™ 355 on Sunday, August 7, 2016.

Next summer’s race weekend will also feature the NASCAR XFINITY Series Zippo 200 on Saturday, August 6th.

The date announcement also comes with news that Watkins Glen International has reached a five-year sanction agreement with NASCAR, bringing the stars of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series to The Glen through the 2020 season.

“We are excited to announce our 2016 race weekend dates in conjunction with NASCAR,” said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. “After readers of USA Today named us the ‘Best NASCAR track’ this year, we can’t wait to welcome back all of our dedicated fans and sponsors next August. The Glen always seems to produce great racing as The Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup approaches, and we expect our newly repaved track surface to continue the trend in 2016.”

In 2015, the facility’s first-ever announced sell-out crowd was treated to a last-corner pass that propelled Joey Logano past the out-of-gas Kevin Harvick, completing Logano’s sweep of the Cheez-It™ 355 weekend.

An announcement regarding WGI ticket sales for the 2016 season is forthcoming. Renewal information has been sent to 2015 ticket holders, providing them with the first opportunity to purchase their seats and camping packages.

Located within five (5) hours (~300 miles) of 25% of the US population, Watkins Glen International is the premier road racing facility in North America, recently voted “Best NASCAR Track” by readers of USA Today.
