Ty Dillon won the Boyd Gaming 300 pole position at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for his first career pole in 15 NASCAR Nationwide Series races. His other RCR teammates Brian Scott qualified fifth, with Matt Crafton and Brendan Gaughan starting 11th and 16th, respectively.
“At the beginning we were really fast. We drove from 17th to seventh and I was like, ‘Holy smokes, we’re gonna have a shot at winning this thing.’ From there I just lost all of my side bite. Everybody else seemed to tighten their cars up and get better.
“I don’t know what caused us to lose the lead. That was unfortunate. I think that was the race. Our car was super fast on the long run when guys would get there tires hot and use up everything and what not.
Qualifying for the Boyd Gaming 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is complete. After the new three segment qualifying round, the TriStar Motorsports drivers had a better understanding of how their cars handled.
Aric Almirola, driver of the No. 43 Smithfield Ford Fusion, and new crew chief Trent Owens have gotten off to a good start with NASCAR’s new qualifying format, advancing to the final round at Phoenix and Las Vegas. “It was obviously good. To have a Penske front row the last two weekends at two completely different race tracks just goes to show how hard these guys have been working. When you work hard those results come.
"“I’m not used to this. Our normal deal is to be scared once a weekend -- three times is a lot to ask out of us. You know it is really exciting, especially once you get down to the end and you’re in the game and you got a shot at it. Not a huge fan of the cool down deal."
