Ford Performance NASCAR – 2024 Kansas 1 Advance

KANSAS 1

Saturday, May 4 — NASCAR Craftsman Series, 8 p.m. ET (FS1)
Sunday, May 5 — NASCAR Cup Series, 3 p.m. ET (FS1)

The month of May kicks off with the first of two trips this year to Kansas Speedway, where the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series returns to action on Saturday night. That will be followed on Sunday afternoon by the NASCAR Cup Series. Ford has 15 combined wins at the 1.5-mile facility.

LOGANO GOING FOR FOURTH

KANSAS VICTORY

Joey Logano will be looking for his fourth career win at Kansas Speedway this weekend, which would be a personal best. Logano currently has three career wins at five series tracks, including Kansas, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Michigan International Speedway, Phoenix Raceway and Talladega Superspeedway. He won for the first time at Kansas in 2014, and then did it again one year later in a well-documented battle with Matt Kenseth that resulted in contact as the two entered turn one with five laps to go. That controversial finish marked Logano’s second straight playoff win and led to a sweep of the round as he took the checkered flag the following week at Talladega. His last Kansas win came in 2020 when he led the final 45 laps to beat Kevin Harvick across the finish line and clinch a spot in the Championship 4.

ONE OF BRAD’S BEST

Brad Keselowski comes into this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series race looking for his first win of the season, but Kansas Speedway could provide the proper medicine for a trip to Victory Lane. That’s because Kansas ranks as his fifth-best venue when it comes to average finish on tracks that currently make up the 2023 circuit. In 28 career starts at Kansas Speedway, Keselowski has a pair of wins, seven top-5 and 14 top-10 efforts for an average finishing position of 12.3 (same as Michigan). Only Loudon (9.8), Pocono (10.9), Las Vegas (11.6) and Richmond (12.0) are better.

JOEY LOGANO: “I believe Kansas has become the best racetrack for the Next Gen car. You look at how wide the racetrack is and the racing that is there, the groove has moved around as it has weathered over the years since it’s been repaved. It’s been a really good race track for these cars, so I look forward to going there for sure. It’s definitely one of those tracks where it takes everything. Downforce is king. Horsepower is a big deal. You’re on the gas a lot. You’ve got to have a car that’s versatile enough to run the bottom on restarts and also be versatile enough on the long run to where you can move up or down to make passes, so the car that can do a lot of different things pretty good is usually the one that is the strongest.”

CHASE BRISCOE: “I feel really good about Kansas and just where our mile-and-a-half program has been. Texas was really good for us and at Vegas we were pretty good, too, so I feel like if we can take some of those things and apply it to Kansas, we’ll be in a pretty good spot. Honestly, I just need to survive these next two weeks and see where we stand from a points standpoint.”

NOAH GRAGSON: “I feel like Kansas is pretty good. Those tracks where they’re a mile-and–a-half and you have progressive banking you have options. You can go to the bottom. You can go to the middle. You can go to the top. It seems like we do well up against the outside wall, but it gives you options to move around, so I think those kind of mile-and-a-halves are really good for the Next Gen car. I noticed at Vegas and Texas that we had good speed in our Mustangs, so that’s been a lot of fun. That’s more of our bread-and-butter this year, so I’m super excited for the next handful of weeks.”

CHRIS BUESCHER: “Kansas is one of those that even after the repave on the Xfinity side, I was there very shortly after that, was really good at that point and then as its aged and moved around and gotten a lot of character I still love it. I still think it’s a really good racetrack. It’s got a lot of different options. You can run top to bottom. It’s got character and I think that’s always a big hitter for me is when we go places that they’re not too smooth or they’re not too clean-cut, I like that. I think that just creates options. I think about the old Atlanta. That was my absolute favorite mile-and-a-half, and you look at Kansas now that Atlanta has been repaved and it’s starting to slowly take that spot.”

JOSH BERRY: “I think Kansas just races really well with the Next Gen. I think just having the different lane options – top, middle, bottom, against the fence, the restarts are crazy – I think it just puts on a really good race there and Kansas is unique. It’s kind of to the point where it’s starting to age and wear the tires a little bit, so there’s that side of things. You’ve got to be conscious of how you’re pushing the tires and sliding the tires, which is more fun as a driver just to know you have to pay a little bit more attention to that, so I just think all of those things together it just puts on a good show.”

ON THE MARK

Ford went to Victory Lane for the first time at Kansas Speedway on Oct. 9, 2005 when Mark Martin took the checkered flag in what was a Roush Fenway Racing runaway with teammates Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards finishing second and third, respectively. Martin led a race-high 139 laps, including 81 of the final 83 circuits, to win by one-half second. It marked the second time in as many months that RFR swept the top three spots, a feat it did two more times during that season. In addition, the victory ended up being Martin’s last with Ford. His 35 series wins with the manufacturer ranks third all-time behind leader Ned Jarrett (43) and second-place Bill Elliott (40).

CALLED DUE TO DARKNESS

A couple of rain delays and impending darkness couldn’t keep Greg Biffle from winning a shortened Lifelock 400 on Sept. 30, 2007. The race was delayed for more than three hours and NASCAR decided to shorten the distance from 267 laps to 210 laps when it became evident there wouldn’t be enough daylight to finish. Biffle passed Kevin Harvick on lap 274, but when Juan Pablo Montoya blew a tire to bring out the caution with four laps to go it appeared he would have to survive a green-white-checker finish in order to win. NASCAR, however, decided to end the race under caution due to darkness. The win was Biffle’s first of the season and snapped a 32-race winless drought.

CRAFTON A TOP 10 FIXTURE

Matt Crafton enters this weekend’s race at Kansas Speedway eighth in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series standings, but being in the top 10 isn’t anything new to the veteran Ford driver. Crafton is currently on a streak that has seen him in the top 10 for 52 consecutive weeks and 73 of the last 74 dating back to the 2021 season-opener at Daytona International Speedway. In 27 career starts at Kansas Speedway, Crafton has a career-best three wins, including one with Ford in 2020, and 14 top-10 finishes.

Harrison and Doyle Team Up to Take On Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America AM Championship

(Indianapolis, Ind.) “I think this is a perfect pairing,” said Wayne Taylor, Team Principal. “Ashton is a great choice and part of our family. Ashton brings a lot of experience in Super Trofeo as well as climbing the ladder in these series. Graham and I think that this is a great next step for him as well. Both Graham and Ashton are committed to sportscar racing, and endurance racing specifically, and working together as teammates will support their continued growth as drivers.”

After recently serving as the Rolex 24 At Daytona co-driver in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracan GT3 EVO2, Harrison will make her return to the Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America Championship alongside GTD teammate, Doyle.

“I’m really excited to join Graham and WTRAndretti for the reminder of the LST season in the No. 10 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Super Trofeo,” said Ashton Harrison, co-driver of the No. 10 DEX Imaging WTRAndretti LST. “I enjoyed sharing a car with Graham at Daytona this year and am so thrilled to go racing full-time him with a goal of many podiums and wins for the remainder of the LST season and World Finals. Harrison previously competed in a four-year stint the LST North America Championship with WTRAndretti, where she became the first female to win a Lamborghini World Finals race (2019). Prior to her return in the LST North America Championship, Harrison broadened her experience in sportscar racing after competing as a GTD category co-driver in the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup in 2023 as well as earning Vice Champion honors in the PRO class of the 2023 Fanatec GT World Challenge America Championship.

“I’m eagerly anticipating working with Ashton again,” said Graham Doyle, co-driver of the No. 10 DEX Imaging WTRAndretti LST. “Over the past year, notably at the Rolex 24, Ashton and I have not only collaborated positively but also pushed each other to excel on the track. Continuing as teammates for the rest of the Super Trofeo season will enhance our partnership and team dynamics. This new chapter marks the beginning of an exciting journey together.”

In 2024, Doyle stepped up to the AM class in the series in his No. 10 DEX Imaging LST as well as expanded his sportscar racing resume as the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup co-driver in the No. 45 DEX Imaging Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2 in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship series. ● Location: Kansas Speedway in Kansas City
● Layout: 1.5-mile oval
● Format: 267 laps, 400 miles
● Stage Lengths: Stage 1: 80 laps / Stage 2: 85 laps / Final Stage: 102 laps
● TV/Radio: FS1 / MRN / SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

Notes of Interest

● Where We Stand: The New Jersey native heads to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City second in the driver standings with 395 points, 15 behind leader Kyle Larson. Three of the four Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) entries are currently inside the top-10 in the standings heading to the 12th points race of the season, with Denny Hamlin fourth and Ty Gibbs eighth.

● Up Front: All four JGR Toyota Camry XSE drivers are among the leaders in total laps led this season. Larson’s 570 laps tops the list for the Cup Series, followed by Hamlin (535), Truex (437) and Gibbs (201) in second, third and fourth, respectively. Bell is 10th on the list with 120 laps led.

● Truex has two wins, 10 top-five finishes, 17 top-10s and has led a total of 906 laps in 31 career NASCAR Cup Series starts at Kansas. Truex’s average Kansas finish is 12.9.

● Strong in the Heartland: Truex’s two Kansas wins came by way of a season sweep of the spring and fall races there in 2017. The feat kicked off a 13-race stretch on the 1.5-mile oval during which he earned six top-fives and finished inside the top-10 all but once.

● While he doesn’t like to play favorites, Truex certainly excels at tracks with worn-out surfaces, where driver skill is key to managing the tires and the racecar over the course of a long race. At four such tracks, Kansas, Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, and Homestead-Miami Speedway, Truex has notched six wins, 23 top-five finishes and 45 top-10s, and has led 2,209 laps. After Kansas this weekend, the Cup Series will race at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway next week.

● Looking for 35: Truex’s win at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon last July was his most recent Cup Series win, the 34th of his career, tying him with 2004 Cup Series champion Kurt Busch for 25th on the all-time Cup Series win list.

● Ahead at this Stage: Truex has accumulated 63 stage wins since the beginning of the stage era in 2017. He is the only driver with 10 or more stage sweeps, with his latest sweep coming at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn last August. Truex scored his second stage win of the season at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway last weekend, leading the field across the line at the end of Stage 1.

Martin Truex Jr., Driver of the No. 19 Auto-Owners Insurance Toyota Camry XSE

You have had success at Kansas Speedway over the years, but your most recent visit turned out to be a challenge. Can you talk a little bit about what it takes to have a solid day there?

“Yeah, for sure. I felt really good about our car there last year, but it didn’t last very long with the tire issue. Kansas (Speedway) is a really fun racetrack. It’s a place where you can move around. The tires wear out and it gets slippery. It’s just a fun place to race and we’re looking forward to it with our Auto-Owners Insurance Camry. At the same time, I think it’s a real measuring stick of your cars and where you’re at. It takes everything to get around there. You have to have horsepower and downforce, a good setup with a lot of tire grip and things like that. It’s a big challenge and usually the guys that have the fastest cars are up front there, so hopefully we’ll be one of those guys because it seems like our Camrys have been really strong this year.”

You head to Kansas this weekend looking for the first win of the season. What will it take to break through and get that first win of 2024?

“Building on what we’ve done so far this year, I feel like Kansas is one of those places that has always suited my style. It’s a place you can move around, it gets really slick and there’s a lot of tire falloff. I really enjoy that. As good as our cars have been lately, I feel good about our chances that we’ll go there and have race-winning speed. And then it’s all about execution, which we are working on right now. If we can have a straightforward strategy race and good pit stops, I think we are going to be in the mix at Kansas, for sure.”

What is racing at Kansas like, and what other track is most similar?

“I would say Kansas is a lot like Homestead but with a tri-oval. Similar corners and a little bit of progressive banking. The wall has really come into play the last couple of years there since the asphalt has worn out. So, running high is very important there, and also momentum is very important at Kansas. You have a big, wide, front straightaway that gives you the option to make big bold moves on the restarts where it can get pretty wild there. Kansas is definitely high on my list of places I like to race, and we are hoping for a great weekend there with our Auto-Owners Insurance Camry.”

There’s a lot of variety in the schedule now – you go from short tracks, to concrete, to road courses, and this week to a 1.5-mile oval. How do you take on the challenge of the variety of tracks you go to in the Cup Series?

“I feel like the schedule nowadays is all over the place with all the variety we have, it’s just that every week is so different and you have to do your homework and study and think back to last year and past races just to remind ourselves. We have really short practices now, so you don’t get a lot of time to get dialed in and get comfortable, and not getting in that rhythm and just getting the car dialed in. We don’t have a lot of time and we need to show up and be ready to go. For the most part, I’ve been doing to these tracks for quite a while, now, and you lean on that past experience a lot.”

INDYCAR SERIES Race Winner, Longtime OfficialDallenbach Dies at 87

INDIANAPOLIS (Monday, April 29, 2024) – Wally Dallenbach, a respected INDYCAR SERIES race winner as a driver and longtime series official dedicated to racing safety, died April 29. He was 87.

Dallenbach, a native of East Brunswick, New Jersey, made 13 Indianapolis 500 starts between 1967-79. His best finish was fourth, in 1976 and 1977, in the No. 40 Wildcat/DGS owned by Patrick Racing. He qualified in the middle of the front row in 1974 for Patrick, his best “500” start.

Perhaps Dallenbach’s most memorable performance as a driver at Indianapolis came in 1975, again for car owner U.E. “Pat” Patrick. He led four times for a race-high 96 laps, losing the top spot only at pit stops. But Dallenbach was eliminated from the race by a burnt piston while leading on Lap 162, just 12 laps before the race was called due to rain, with Bobby Unser earning his second “500” victory. Dallenbach was credited with ninth place.

Dallenbach recorded five victories, 27 podium finishes and one pole in 180 INDYCAR SERIES starts. His best championship finish was second, behind Roger McCluskey, in 1973 despite not qualifying for the first two races of the season.

The most memorable of Dallenbach’s victories came in the 1973 California 500 at Ontario Motor Speedway, the last of his three straight wins that season for Patrick Racing.

Dallenbach started his driving career in drag racing on the East Coast before switching to oval racing in midgets and sprint cars. He made his INDYCAR SERIES debut in 1965 at Langhorne Speedway, with his final start coming in 1979 at Phoenix. He then retired as a driver, but it wasn’t his last appearance in an INDYCAR SERIES car.

In 1981, rain severely curtailed the first weekend of Indianapolis 500 qualifying, and Mario Andretti didn’t get a chance to make an attempt. Andretti had a clashing commitment to race in the Belgian Grand Prix Formula One race during the second qualifying weekend, so Dallenbach briefly exited retirement to put Andretti’s No. 40 STP Oil Treatment Wildcat/Cosworth safely in the field before turning the car back to Andretti for the race.

After his initial retirement, Dallenbach became the first competition director and chief steward of Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) in 1980. He served as chief steward until 2004, easily recognized by his trademark cowboy hat and earning respect from all corners of the paddock for his even-handed officiating and humble, personable demeanor.

Dallenbach also made significant contributions to racing safety. He worked with doctors Steve Olvey and Terry Trammell and safety directors Steve Edwards and Lon Bromley to develop a trailblazing safety team including doctors, nurses and emergency medical technicians that traveled to all CART races. He also worked with teams and car builders to create improvements in chassis construction, including more energy-absorbing materials.

“Wally Dallenbach made a huge contribution to our sport for five decades as a driver and official,” a joint statement from INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway said. “He was a talented competitor behind the wheel, who always raced hard but clean. That sense of fairness and decency extended to his legendary tenure as chief steward of CART, where he was respected and liked by all for his steady, sensible officiating. Wally’s many contributions to racing safety, especially a traveling medical team, will resonate long into the future. He was one of the true good guys of open-wheel racing, and our thoughts and sympathies are with his family.”

Said two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Gordon Johncock, Dallenbach’s teammate for six seasons at Patrick Racing: “Wally was as good a teammate as you could ever ask for. He took racing seriously. I’ve never met anyone at the track as helpful as Wally. He loved the sport and after he retired spent years helping as chief steward of Championship Auto Racing Teams. He helped the veterans and rookies – everyone. I’ll miss him. He did a lot for the sport over the years. A very good man.”

Motorcycles also were an object of passion for Dallenbach. He moved to a ranch in Basalt, Colorado, after his successful 1973 season – fulfilling a dream spawned during his honeymoon in 1960 in Aspen – and organized the Colorado 500 dirt-bike ride with friend Sherm Cooper in 1976.

By 1981, the invitation-only event grew so big that the Colorado 500 Charity Fund was established, with a road ride added in 1987. The ride has raised more than $1.2 million for scholarship funds, medical centers, teen services, scouting and other charities, including groups that preserve trail-riding areas.

His vast and varied accomplishments were rewarded with enshrinement in multiple Halls of Fame, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame, Motorsports Hall of Fame of America, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Hall of Fame and state sports halls of fame in his native New Jersey and Colorado.

Dallenbach’s wife, Peppy, passed away in 2023. He is survived by three children – two sons, former NASCAR Cup Series driver Wally Jr. and multiple Pikes Peak International Hill Climb winner Paul, and daughter, Colleen.

  • Former NASCAR Star Joe Nemechek Goes a Perfect Three-for-Three in Gene Felton Memorial Challenge HSR Historic Stock Car Victories in his NEMCO Motorsports 2007 No. 47 Toyota Camry

BRASELTON, Georgia (April 29, 2024) – One of the biggest editions of the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) Mitty in the event’s nearly 50-year history came to a competitive conclusion Sunday with more than a dozen HSR Feature Race winners crowned in the final two day’s of competition in the 46th running of HSR’s oldest race at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Competitors in cars from nearly every generation of sports car racing and other categories from the last 60 years plus made it to victory lane over the course of the three-day blockbuster event that showcased “The Cars of Japan” as this year’s Featured Marque.

One of two competitors doubling up on HSR Feature race wins at the Mitty was Todd Treffert in his 901 Shop 1972 No. 14 Porsche 911. Treffert add the overall and GT Classic (GTC) wins in Sunday’s B.R.M. Endurance Challenge race to his Friday Sasco Sports overall and Porsche-class victories.

The weekend’s other double Feature Race winners were Cory Friedman and his Autometrics team in their 2016 No. 515 Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo. Friedman won Sunday’s Global GT sprint and co-drove with Shannon Heford to the GT Modern (GTM) win in Saturday’s B.R.M. Endurance Challenge one-hour race.

Friedman and Heford finished a close second overall in Saturday’s B.R.M. Endurance race to overall and Prototype winners Pierce Marshall and Eric Foss. Making their first start of the season in the Matador Motorsports 2017 No. 02 Cadillac DPi, Marshall and Foss secured their second B.R.M. victory in a row after winning the same race at 2023’s season-ending Sebring Historics. The win was also the fourth overall B.R.M. Endurance victory for the Matador duo at Road Atlanta since 2020.

Saturday’s third B.R.M. Endurance race winner was Benjamin Myers who scored Historic-class honors and an impressive seventh overall finish in a packed 47-car field in his Wolf Motorsports 2001 No. 29 Carbir CS2 sports 2000.

The weekend’s final B.R.M. Endurance victor was Craig Watkins who finished just behind Treffert in second overall while securing the Vintage division victory in his 1968 No. 46 Porsche 911 prepared by the 901 Shop.

Following up on Friday’s Sasco Sports International/American Challenge race for bigger classic GT cars, Saturday’s Sasco Sports “B” race was a showcase of small-bore sports cars delivering some big excitement.

The overall and Porshe class win went to Gary Stanberry who pulled off a last-lap pass in the downhill run to the checkered flag for one of the most thrilling finishes of the weekend. Stanberry led only the final few hundred feet of the race but it was enough for the win in the 1988 No. 77 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup series car prepared by DAS Sport.

Michael Leveque was the first non-Porsche finisher to the line in his No. 23 1966 Yenko Stinger Corvair. Leveque secured the Sasco Sports American division win in addition to a stout seventh-place overall finish in the 41-car field.

Sasco Sports “B” International-class honors went to John Bibbo who broke through for his first HSR race win in his 1976 No. 208 BMW 2002 prepared by Motorsport Services and run out of Heritage Motorsports in the paddock.

Reigning Gene Felton Memorial Challenge winner “Front Row” Joe Nemechek went a perfect three-for-three in the annual tribute race for Felton, the late Georgia-based driving star and 2019 HSR Mitty Grand Marshal. Winning both the Saturday and Sunday HSR Group 8 Historic Stock Car races in his NEMCO Motorsports 2007 No. 47 Toyota Camry, Nemechek amassed enough points to keep a personal lock on the perpetual Lanier Technical College Gene Felton Trophy as the only driver to win it in the Pro category each of the three years the race has been run.

Matt Tifft finished second on track to Nemechek in Sunday’s final Group 8 sprint in his No. 39 2006 Dodge Charger to clinch Amateur-class Gene Felton Memorial Challenge honors for the first time.

Saturday’s highlight Cars of Japan Feature Race was an exhibition run for the more than 40 entered cars of all types from Datsun/Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Honda/Acura and more. Although no trophies or points were awarded, Mazda Heritage Collection drivers Jonathan Bomarito and Tom Long definitely stole the spotlight. Moving the mighty 1989 Mazda 767B into the “lead” from the “pole” at the start, Bomarito was soon joined by Long, who was at the wheel of the 1991 Mazda RX-7 GTO. After Long went to the front for a few laps, the Mazda duo formed up to take the checkered flag side-by-side in a nearly perfect photo finish. The Mazda Heritage Collection cars and drivers were on track and on display all weekend and were one of the most popular attractions in what was the program’s first and hopefully not last appearance at the HSR Mitty.

The Grand Marshal of the 46th HSR Mitty was recently retired and longtime HSR President David Hinton who gave the traditional “Drivers Start Your Engines” command for Saturday’s Cars of Japan Feature Race. Hinton, who is also the owner and principal of race and championship-winning historic and vintage racing team Heritage Motorsports, remains a popular fixture in the HSR paddock. He was also presented during Friday night’s Mitty competitor social mixer at the track with the HSR Mitty Award for the competitor that best typifies the adventurous spirit of the fictitious daredevil daydreamer, Walter Mitty, who is the namesake and inspiration for the 46-year-old HSR Mitty extravaganza.

Next up for HSR on the 2024 schedule is the second annual HSR Classic 6 Hours of Watkins Glen, June 6 – 9, at Watkins Glen International. Please visits www.HSRRace.com for information.

About HSR: An International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) property, Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) was formed in the mid-1970s with an event at Road Atlanta. Choose Accommodations Wisely

Finding suitable accommodations can make a huge difference in your travel experience. Consider incorporating mindfulness practices like meditation or yoga to alleviate stress and stay centered amidst the chaos of travel.

Mind Your Schedule

Time management is critical when you’re juggling multiple commitments on the road. Use tools like Google Calendar or Trello to keep track of your itinerary and set reminders for important meetings or deadlines. Build in buffer time between appointments to account for unexpected delays or last-minute changes, and don’t forget to schedule some downtime for rest and relaxation to avoid burnout.

Embrace Flexibility

Despite your best-laid plans, things don’t always go as expected when you’re traveling. Embrace flexibility and adaptability as your allies rather than viewing disruptions as setbacks.
