Kansas is a track you’ve raced at plenty of times in your career. How are you feeling this week headed back there, this time racing full time in the Cup series for Spire Motorsports?

Racing to End Alzheimer’s looking to rebound at Miami

With a difficult season opener behind him, Mark Kvamme hopes to put the familiar purple and yellow Alzheimer’s colors back in Victory Lane

LOS ANGELES (1 May 2023) – With a tough start to the 2024 Porsche Carrera Cup North America season behind them, Mark Kvamme and the Racing to End Alzheimer’s/MDK Motorsports team looks to start fresh in this weekend’s doubleheader – part of the Formula One Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix.

Kvamme and the No. 43 Racing to End Alzheimer’s Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car had a rough ride in the doubleheader season opener at Sebring International Raceway in March, caught up in multiple incidents that left the two-time Masters class champion ninth in points – though with his MDK Motorsports squad leading the team championship.

Having scored victories in both races at Miami last year, Kvamme knows this is a good place to jumpstart his title defense.

“Miami treated us well last year and we’re hoping for more of the same this year,” said Kvamme. “We scored the race one pole and took both wins, in very hot and humid conditions, and there’s certainly no reason to expect this year’s conditions to be any different. As we saw at Sebring, this is going to be another highly competitive season, and I’m ready to get back into the mix – and to help highlight our Alzheimer’s program by putting the purple and yellow colors back out front.”

But for the Racing to End Alzheimer’s team, the on-track action is only half the story. The team’s mission is to increase awareness of this terrible disease while giving families a way to honor their loved ones in a very tangible way – and raising funds for research and treatment. For a $250 donation, a loved one’s name is placed on the car as it races across the United States (https://www.r2endalz.org), with 100% of the donations matched, and shared between the team’s two beneficiaries. The No. 43 Porsche currently carries 122 names – with plenty of room for more.

For Racing to End Alzheimer’s founder Phil Frengs, whose wife Mimi was diagnosed with the disease in 2013, the race weekends offer the chance to speak with race fans from all over the country – and at Formula One events, all over the world. Frengs can’t count the number of conversations he has each race weekend, seemingly every family having been touched by dementia or Alzheimer’s.

“I always refer to myself as the hugger in chief,” said Frengs. “The car’s livery is very identifiable, and so many people stop and want to talk. It doesn’t take long for people to start telling me their stories, about how they’ve been affected by this disease, and I’m glad to give them someone to talk to, someone who understands. And we love being a part of the Miami Grand Prix, it is such a huge event. Because the Porsche Carrera Cup North America paddock is open to fans, we meet people from all over Florida – and really, all over the U.S. and the world – so it’s a great opportunity for us to reach a large audience. Just look for the bright purple tent!”

The Porsche Carrera Cup North America series will contest two races at the Miami Grand Prix. Race one takes the green flag Saturday at 5:50 p.m. ET, with race two Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET. The races will be broadcast live in the U.S., on IMSA.tv, the NBC Peacock streaming app and PorscheCarreraCup.us.

About Racing to End Alzheimer’s

In 2013, Phil Frengs’ wife Mimi was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease. Their experience with the disease led Frengs to a seminal moment: his company, Legistics, had long sponsored a team in IMSA sports car racing and he realized an opportunity to raise money and awareness for the fight against the disease. In 2017, he formed Racing to End Alzheimer’s, giving fans the opportunity to honor loved ones by putting their names on the race car via donation – with Legistics matching each giftfd. 100% of those donations go to the two organizations the team supports:

The Nantz National Alzheimer’s Center at Houston Methodist Hospital is exploring cutting edge strategies in therapy, care and research to find a cure for these dementias. NNAC was founded by longtime CBS Sports broadcaster Jim Nantz and his family in honor of his father, Jim, Jr., who passed away after a 13-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

The UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care Program is a nationally-recognized grant-funded program designed to help patients and their families with the complex medical, behavioral and social needs associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

Toyota Racing – Weekly Preview – 05.01.24

This Week in Motorsports: April 29 – May 5, 2024

· NCS/NCTS/ARCA: Kansas Speedway – May 3-5

PLANO, Texas (May 1, 2024) – NASCAR’s Cup and Trucks Series head to America’s heartland and Kansas Speedway, where the sport makes its first of two trips this season. They’ll be joined by the ARCA Menards Series, holding their fifth race of 2024.

NASCAR National Series – NCS | NCTS

Points standings beginning to tighten … The Cup Series points standings once again altered following Sunday’s race in Dover. With his third top-five of the season, Martin Truex Jr. remains the lead Toyota Camry XSE, currently second in the standings and only 15 points behind first. Claiming his third win of the season, Denny Hamlin jumped two spots in the standings to fourth, also holding the most Playoff points of any driver with 17. The two are joined by Tyler Reddick (fifth) and Ty Gibbs (eighth) inside the top 10 of the point standings.

Toyota aims to continue Kansas dominance … Kansas Speedway has been a haven of success for Toyota over the last few seasons, where Camrys have been victorious in the last four Kansas races and five of the last six. Hamlin and Reddick provided a Kansas sweep for Toyota in 2023. The nine Camry XSE drivers set to start on Sunday aim to extend the win streak to five.

Second consecutive race for Johnson … Making the fourth start of his part-time campaign in 2024, Jimmie Johnson will once again pilot the No. 84 Toyota Camry XSE for the second consecutive weekend. Sunday will be his 30th start at Kansas Speedway, where Johnson has three wins (2008, 2011, 2015), nine top-fives and 19 top-10s.

Three Toyota Tundras Inside Truck Series Top 10 … After a week off, the Truck Series is back in action at Kansas with three Toyota Tundra TRD Pros inside the top 10 of the series points standings. Corey Heim leads the Toyota contingent in second position, two points out of the top spot. His TRICON Garage teammates, Taylor Gray and Tanner Gray, sit fifth and ninth in the standings with nine races remaining in the regular season.

Moffitt makes 2024 Trucks debut … Longtime NASCAR veteran, Brett Moffitt, makes his season debut in the Truck Series in the No. 1 Tundra TRD Pro with TRICON Garage. Moffitt returns to Team Toyota after capturing the 2018 Truck Series championship and is making his first Trucks start since winning at Talladega last September.

Heim seeks another Kansas top-10 … Coming back to Kansas Speedway, Heim will be looking for his fourth consecutive top-10 finish at the mile-and-a-half, including coming off a fourth-place finish last year. Another top-10 would also make it eight-for-eight for Heim inside the top-10 so far this season.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA Menards Series

Quest for four in a row at Kansas … Once the green flag drops for the ARCA Menards Series race on Saturday, Toyota will be seeking its fourth consecutive win at Kansas Speedway and eighth in the last 11 races. Another victory would also mark Toyota’s 21st win in the last 23 ARCA Menards Series events.

Notes of Interest

● Ryan Preece and the No. 41 HaasTooling.com team return to Kansas Speedway in Kansas City for Sunday’s AdventHealth 400 NASCAR Cup Series race aiming to have another strong showing on an intermediate-style oval. In the series’ most recent visit to an intermediate track, the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth on April 14, Preece had an impressive performance during which he ran inside the top-10 for a majority of the race en route to a solid 12th-place finish. It was his best career finish at Texas in eight Cup Series starts.

● Sunday’s 267-lap race marks Preece’s ninth Cup Series start at Kansas and his third for Stewart-Haas Racing. He hits the Heartland of America having scored three top-15 finishes in the past four races. Last Sunday at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, the driver of the No. 41 Ford Mustang Dark Horse was forced to retire 66 laps into the 400-lap race due to a highly unusual issue with his racecar. A part failure led to smoke engulfing the cockpit, and his 37th-place result marked his first DNF (Did Not Finish) since last August at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

● Preece has three starts outside of the Cup Series at Kansas, two in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and one in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. His most recent Xfinity Series outing at Kansas came in October 2018 behind the wheel of the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing entry. It started well, with Preece advancing from his seventh starting position and moving into the top-five before finished third in the opening stage. But a multicar accident on lap 91 of the 200-lap race took him out of contention, leaving him with a 21st-place finish. In his lone Truck Series start at Kansas with David Gilliland Racing in September 2022, Preece started seventh and earned an impressive third-place finish, collecting 13 stage points along the way.

● Returning to Preece’s No. 41 Ford Mustang Dark Horse at Kansas is HaasTooling.com, which has adorned the hood of his car for seven of the 11 races this season. As the cutting tool division of Haas Automation, HaasTooling.com allows CNC machinists to purchase high-quality cutting tools at great prices. These cutting tools are sold exclusively online at HaasTooling.com and shipped directly to users. Haas Automation, founded in 1983 by team co-owner Gene Haas, is America’s leading builder of CNC machine tools. The company manufactures a complete line of vertical and horizontal machining centers, turning centers, rotaries and indexers, and automation solutions.

Ryan Preece, Driver of the No. 41 HaasTooling.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse

You had a strong performance at Texas, the most recent mile-and-a-half track on the schedule. Could we see the same type of performance at Kansas?

“I look back at Texas as being our first real mile-and-a-half race of the season. Vegas didn’t give us a lot. Not being able to turn many laps in practice and switching to a back-up car for the race there didn’t give us an opportunity to see what we had for the mile-and-a-half racetracks this season. So, looking back at Texas, I felt pretty good about our race there. We had good speed during the race. Our emphasis for Kansas is qualifying better. If we don’t do that, it makes for a long day, especially when track position is important like it will be on Sunday.”

You’re 11 races into the season and you’ve put together a string of solid runs over the past several races. What changed from the beginning of the season, when things didn’t seem to be going in your favor?

“The potential has always been there for us. If you look at the beginning of the season, there were two superspeedway races with a lot of unknowns, the wreck in practice at Vegas, and the strategy that didn’t work out at Phoenix. Those things didn’t work in our favor, but we’ve certainly had a few strong runs in the past several races, which is what we wanted to do heading into April. Obviously, things didn’t work out as we had hoped at Dover, but I feel like we would’ve had another good car if not for the issue there. We just really need to work on qualifying better to give us a good shot when it comes time to race.”

How is the race craft different at each of the mile-and-a-half tracks?

“Kansas is totally different from the others, just because the outside is the dominant lane. You need to be able to move around and go where they can’t to have a good run there.”

How does the first Kansas race prepare you for that track when the series returns in September?

“It’s a very different mile-and-a-half racetrack. Conditions can definitely be different from the first to the second time we go there. Depending on how cool or warm it is during the race on Sunday, we can take what we learn and apply it the next time we race there in the fall, when conditions are most likely to be on the warmer side. It’s all about what the racetrack gives us on Sunday, and how close those conditions are to what the racetrack gives us in the fall.”

JACKSONVILLE, FL, May 1, 2024 – Racing Prodigy™, a groundbreaking sports, entertainment, and media property making motorsports more accessible, today announced its official plans for Prodigy Week, scheduled to take place at Atlanta Motorsports Park (AMP) May 13-15, 2024. The conclusion of Season 1 Prodigy Racing League™ (PRL™) esports competitions marks the transition for 20 aspiring racers from 10 countries – ages 15 to 45 including two female drivers – who will receive all-expense-paid trips to pursue their dreams of racing real cars professionally. They will compete to be drafted, receiving paid contracts to compete in the PRL real-world racing series beginning this fall.

The racers earned their golden tickets to Prodigy Week either by winning an esports competition on iRacing, RaceRoom or Street Kart Racing, or by being selected by Prodigy Search Committees. During Prodigy Week, drivers will be coached and judged across multiple disciplines, including fitness, on-camera interviews, skid pad, autocross, racecar data review, and competing in Radical SR1 race cars on the main racetrack.

“Racing Prodigy takes another step forward in the world’s first e2Real sports league to make motorsports more accessible,” said Racing Prodigy CEO David Cook. “In our first season, we have witnessed over 100,000 sim racers from more than 100 countries compete across our esports competitions, so we know there is high demand from drivers who want to have a real-world racing career, and so does the undiscovered talent. If the results of our first Prodigy Week part 1 last fall are any preview, we are confident the 20 drivers competing at Prodigy Week part 2 will compete at the highest level to earn their spots with our six racing teams participating in our racing series launching this year.”

Full coverage of Prodigy Week will be available live on Racing Prodigy’s YouTube channel, May 13-15. Fans will be able to vote to save their favorite drivers during the Radical SR1 Chase Competition. How Do Electric Vehicles Work And Why They’re The Future

An electric car charging in California

As worries about climate change increase and fossil fuels run low, there’s a critical need for sustainable ways to get around. Electric cars are a promising answer, producing no emissions and reducing reliance on limited resources.

Let’s delve into some electric car innovations and explore why they are poised to shape the future of transportation.

Understanding Electric Vehicles

Electric vehicles, or EVs, are a growing transportation option that relies on electric motors for propulsion. Unlike traditional gasoline-powered cars, EVs can be powered in different ways. Some connect to an external electricity source, while others use onboard batteries or convert fuel into electricity for the motor.

There’s more than one way to go electric! Here are the various types of electric vehicles (EVs) on the market, each with its own set of benefits and how it operates.

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

BEVs rely entirely on electricity stored in batteries for power, lacking an internal combustion engine. This results in zero tailpipe emissions. Recharging is essential for BEVs, requiring connection to external power sources like charging stations or home outlets.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)

Combining a conventional internal combustion engine with an electric motor and battery pack, PHEVs provide versatility. They can function in all-electric mode using battery power or switch to hybrid mode, utilizing both the engine and electric motor. Recharging is possible through plug-in options or using the gasoline or diesel tank for extended range when the battery is depleted.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)

HEVs integrate both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor but do not support plug-in recharging. The electric motor complements the engine during acceleration and low-speed driving, enhancing fuel efficiency. Additionally, HEVs utilize regenerative braking to replenish their batteries by capturing energy during braking and deceleration.

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs)

FCEVs utilize hydrogen gas as a fuel source and a fuel cell stack to generate electricity via a chemical reaction with oxygen from the air. Emitting only water vapor, FCEVs offer extended driving ranges comparable to traditional vehicles. However, FCEVs are in the early stages of commercialization and necessitate a hydrogen refueling infrastructure for widespread adoption.

These varied types of electric vehicles cater to diverse consumer preferences and needs, offering different levels of electrification and driving experiences. Moreover, they contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing reliance on fossil fuels, marking a pivotal step towards sustainable transportation solutions.

How Do They Work?

Electric vehicles (EVs) run on a much simpler system compared to gasoline-powered cars. Here’s a breakdown of the key components:

Battery Pack

This acts like the fuel tank in a gasoline car, storing the electrical energy that powers the vehicle. EVs use high-voltage lithium-ion batteries for their efficiency and long lifespan.

Electric Motor

Unlike a gasoline engine, EVs use an electric motor to turn the wheels. This motor gets its power from the battery pack. Electric motors provide smooth acceleration and high torque.

Inverter

Regular car batteries provide direct current (DC) electricity, but electric motors prefer alternating current (AC). The inverter’s job is to convert the DC power from the battery into AC power for the motor.

Controller

This acts as the brain of the EV, managing the flow of electricity between the battery pack, motor, and inverter. It controls the car’s acceleration and deceleration based on the driver’s input.

Regenerative Braking

During braking, the electric motor can flip its function and act as a generator. This captures the energy from the car’s slowdown and converts it back into electricity, topping off the battery and improving efficiency.

Charging

EVs replenish their batteries by plugging into charging stations. These stations can be slow chargers for home use or fast chargers for public stations, offering quicker charging times.

The Future Of Transportation

Electric vehicles (EVs) are seen as the future of transportation for several compelling reasons:

Environmental Benefits

The biggest advantage of EVs is their reduced environmental impact. Unlike gasoline-powered vehicles, EVs produce zero tailpipe emissions, contributing to cleaner air and reduced greenhouse gas emissions that fight climate change.

Energy Efficiency

Electric motors are simply more efficient than gasoline engines. EVs waste less energy and can convert more of it into power for the wheels, resulting in a greater range per unit of energy.

Reduced Reliance On Fossil Fuels

Transportation is a major consumer of fossil fuels like oil. Widespread adoption of EVs would lessen dependence on these resources, leading to greater energy security and potentially lower fuel costs for consumers.

Advancements In Technology

Battery technology is constantly improving, offering EVs with greater range and shorter charging times. Additionally, research into alternative charging methods like solar panels or wireless charging is ongoing, making EVs even more convenient.

Government Policies

Many governments recognize the environmental and economic benefits of EVs and implement policies like tax breaks and rebates to encourage their purchase. Additionally, some countries are setting targets to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles entirely in the coming decades.

Performance And Cost

EVs are becoming increasingly popular due to improvements in performance and cost. Many EVs offer comparable acceleration and handling to gasoline cars, and the total cost of ownership, including maintenance and fuel costs, can be lower for EVs

While there are still challenges to overcome, such as building a robust charging infrastructure and ensuring sustainable battery production, the advantages of EVs are undeniable. They represent a cleaner, more efficient, and potentially more affordable future for transportation.

Takeaway

Electric vehicles are a powerful solution to the twin challenges of climate change and dwindling fossil fuels. Their innovative technology, offering zero tailpipe emissions and exceptional efficiency, paves the way for a greener and more sustainable transportation landscape.

With continuous advancements in battery technology, charging infrastructure, and government support, electric vehicles are poised to become the dominant force on the road, shaping a cleaner, quieter, and more secure future for generations to come.

Affordable Auto Shipping for Inoperable Vehicles: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re a business owner with a non-running car, or a car repair shop managing an inoperable vehicle, the thought of moving that car from point A to point B might seem daunting. Conventional vehicle transport can be expensive, and for a car that doesn’t start, the costs and logistics can quickly spiral out of control.

But fear not. There are cost-effective solutions available to you. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the most affordable ways to transport a non-running car without breaking the bank. From DIY strategies to leveraging specialist services, we’ll cover it all.

The Costly Conundrum of Transporting Non-Running Cars

Whether you’re a restorer with a classic sitting in a garage, or a business owner needing to move an inoperable fleet vehicle, the proposition of transporting a car that can’t drive is a challenge. The usual expenses of professional auto shipping can double or even triple for vehicles that require extra care and handling.

The reasons for the hike in cost are easy to understand. Non-running cars can be heavier, which means they pose additional challenges to loading equipment. Mechanical issues or scattered parts can also complicate the loading process and require more time and labor.

You may have considered leaving the restoration project where it is and working on it in place, but sometimes, moving it is essential. Perhaps you’ve sold the vehicle and need to deliver it to a buyer, or you’re relocating and the car must come with you. In such cases, not only is it possible to transport your non-runner, but you can do it in an economically savvy manner.

DIY or Don’t – The Great Non-Running Car Transport Debate

The age-old question of whether to handle the task yourself or bring in the professionals is particularly pertinent here.

Option 1: Doing It Yourself

The most affordable way to transport a non-running project car is undoubtedly to do it yourself. Towing a vehicle can be performed with the right equipment and a little know-how. First, you’ll need a trailer that can support the weight of your car. Renting one is an option, and this initial cost must be weighed against the savings versus professional services.

Ensure your trailer is properly hitched to your towing vehicle, and that the electrics for lights and brakes are functioning. Next, loading your non-runner involves pushing or winching the car onto the trailer. Securing it in place is vital, and heavy-duty straps, chains, and wheel blocks will prevent it from shifting during transport.

Option 2: Local Tow Companies

Alternatively, hiring a local tow service can be cost-effective. Make sure to specify that the car is not operational to avoid any price changes or issues on the day of the tow. Discussing the exact condition of your car and its destination upfront can avoid any surprises when the bill arrives.

Option 3: Specialist Transport Services

Companies like Professional Car Carriers specialize in shipping inoperable vehicles. While these can be more expensive than the DIY route or local towing, they often offer valuable experience and services that can further protect your car. With the right due diligence, you may find these services to be more affordable than you initially expected.

Preparing Your Non-Running Car for the Journey

Proper preparation of your non-running car can save you headaches and potential damage during transport.

Secure Loose Parts

Before transport, make sure any parts that might detach during the move are safely stored. This includes hoods, bumpers, or loose engine components. A secure vehicle minimizes risks both to itself and to other road users.

Ensure Accessibility

Ease of access for loading and unloading is key. Clear a path for the car, inside your garage or driveway, and ensure that it can be easily attached to a trailer or the tow truck.

Documentation and Insurance

Document the condition of the car with photographs. This can serve as evidence in the event that damage occurs during transportation. Also, check your insurance policy to understand what is covered and if there are any requirements for transporting vehicles.

Real-life Examples of Affordable Transport

To put theory into practice, real-life examples can be invaluable.

Jack’s Classic Restorations

Jack needed to transport a non-running 1967 Mustang from his home in Iowa to a body shop in Nebraska. He opted for a local tow service, which cost significantly less than professional auto shipping. Jack and the tow truck driver worked together to ensure the car was securely loaded and made it to its destination safely.

Amanda’s Online Car Sales

Amanda frequently sells classic cars online, including non-running projects. She uses a specialist transport service that accommodates inoperable vehicles. The service has streamlined the process for her, and despite the additional service, it remains the most affordable option for her business operations.

Conclusion and Next Steps

The transportation of non-running cars does not have to be a financial burden. By considering DIY options, local tow services, and specialized vehicle transporters, you can find a solution that fits your budget while ensuring the safety and security of your vehicle. The next step is to take action, gather quotes, and plan your transport. Stay proactive, stay frugal, and most importantly, stay safe on the roads, no matter the condition of your car.
