The Bowtie brand’s first trip to victory lane at Talladega Superspeedway came with Darrell Waltrip and the No. 88 DiGard Racing Chevrolet in May 1977. How do you feel heading to Talladega?

“(Laughs) Fine. There’s a lot of one-time winners at that track and I’m in that group, but a lot more wrecks and hurt feelings leaving there and last fall stings really hard. I made an aggressive move and crashed in Stage 1. I want to be running at the end and then we’ll race it out.”

Bubba Wallace said that once he had the mindset of enjoying superspeedway racing that his performance improved. How do you fall into that group? Do you enjoy racing in close quarters?

“I do. In the Truck Series I was the same way; I was so nervous and just trying to survive and I would ride in the back and then I would go race at the end and then I would get torn up. I finally just decided that when I got to a team that was okay with me crashing…that was the other thing, I drove for teams that didn’t want me to crash because that was their opportunity to make money if you could just finish the race – so when I got to the Xfinity Series and the 10 car, they told me to go win and it doesn’t matter if you crash it or not. I’ve crashed a lot on superspeedways but I also have two superspeedway wins (Xfinity and Cup). Not a great percentage but the two wins do go a long way. Yes, I had a mindset change and I agree with Darrell (Bubba) that it makes the week a lot more enjoyable versus dreading going into it.”

Talk about racing at Talladega Superspeedway. What kind of race do you expect we will see at Talladega Superspeedway?

“You can do certain things throughout that race to put yourself in a better position, but it’s one of those tracks you go into knowing that there’s probably a 75 percent chance that you could be in a wreck. You have to take that 25 percent and make it yours. I have Talladega Superspeedway circled on my calendar. I love racing there and I can’t wait to get on track in the Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Off-Road Chevrolet Camaro. Talladega Superspeedway is a little bit different real estate than Daytona International Speedway. At Daytona, you’re packed in there and it’s hard to get to someone’s inside or outside, and there is less movement in the draft. At Talladega, there’s a lot of movement in the draft, the packs are big and wide, and with the way this package works, there is more two-lane racing around the bottom. It’s going to be interesting to see if we can make that third lane work at some point and move around. You’re kind of holding on at times waiting to see what happens. Everybody is pushing, and you’re hoping you can get through the mess.”

How cool was it to win a fuel mileage race last year at Talladega?

“Winning is always cool. You strive to get to victory lane every single weekend and celebrate with your team and it’s great when you get there. I’ve not been known as a great speedway racer, so it was especially gratifying to score the win at Talladega, my first there since 2008.”

Do you anticipate the same kind of race at Talladega that we saw in the Daytona 500 back in February?

“I do think we will see similar racing as we did in Daytona with guys trying to modulate their fuel consumption as best as they can to minimize their time on pit road and make their next stop as short as possible.”

You won a Talladega last spring and ran well at both Daytona and Atlanta earlier this season. Does that give you any optimism entering Talladega?

“There’s definitely some optimism entering the speedway races with RCR. Both ECR and RCR have been strong at the restrictor plate races for as long as I can remember and it’s nice when we can continue that trend like we have last year and again this year.”

“Of course, the thing is just surviving to the end. I felt like we did a good job with that in Texas and with the Duels at Daytona. I am going try to be a good citizen and help people when I can and, hopefully, people will help me out when they can. We just want to be on the right end of it at the end of the race.”

How do you feel going into this week’s race after your first top-10 finish?

“I feel pretty good. I wish we could take advantage of the metric for qualifying and be able to qualify later, but Talladega is obviously a little different. I am excited to build on that finish and have some positive momentum, especially with Zeigler Auto Group coming on for their first full primary of the year.”

How would you assess Trackhouse so far?

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 17, 2024) – Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 gener8tor Ford Mustang Dark Horse team travel to the Heart for NASCAR’s first visit to the Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

In four previous Cup starts at the 2.66-mile track, Gilliland has three top-12 finishes. Gilliland has shown much speed this year on superspeedways, leading laps at both the Daytona 500 (16) and at the Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway (58) for a combined 74 laps lead. Gilliland has also proven to his fellow competitors that he can be trusted as a drafting partner at the superspeedway speeds.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (April 17, 2024) – Michael McDowell and his No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops Ford Mustang Dark Horse team head to the 2.66 mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway this weekend for NASCAR’s first of two visits to the track.

Talladega has been a great track statistically for McDowell and Front Row Motorsports. For McDowell he has three top-5s and four top-10s in 26 starts, including a third-place finish in the fall of 2022. For FRM, the organization has six top-5s and 20 top-10s, including the historic 1-2 finish with David Ragan and David Gilliand in the 2013 spring race.

McDowell and the No. 34 team will once again have Love’s Travel Stops and their truck care partner, Chevron Delo, racing with them this weekend. Chevron Delo is the maker of top performing heavy duty engine oils, coolants, antifreezes, transmission fluids, gear oils, greases and hydraulic oils.

● For the first time in his NASCAR Cup Series career, Josh Berry and the No. 4 Overstock.com Ford Mustang Dark Horse will take on the high-banked, 2.66-mile Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway during Sunday’s Geico 500. The 33-year-old native of Hendersonville, Tennessee, has raced twice during the Cup Series’ NextGen era at Talladega’s sister track, the 2.5-mile Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway oval. His first outing at “The World Center of Racing” came with LEGACY MOTOR CLUB and resulted in a 22nd-place finish last August. He then kicked off his official Cup Series rookie season in the No. 4 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for Stewart-Haas Racing in February’s 66th running of the Daytona 500. Berry held his position in the lead pack until he was spun on pit road, which relegated him to the tail of the field and out of the draft. He finished 25th.

● Berry has experience at Talladega in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, earning one top-five finish, two top-10s and an average starting position of 10.1 in five starts there with JR Motorsports. Best of his Xfinity Series outings at Talladega was his fifth-place finish from the seventh starting position in the October 2022 race. After finishing 10th in Stage 2, he deftly maneuvered the draft lanes to score a solid top-five.

● Crew chief Rodney Childers will call the shots for the No. 4 team Sunday, which will mark his 35th career Talladega start atop the pit box in NASCAR’s premier series. In his previous 34 races, Childers’ drivers garnered four top-five finishes, 12 top-10s, an average starting position of 18.3 and an average finish of 17.1. His drivers failed to finish just five of those 34 Talladega races and completed 6,160 (95.1 percent) of a possible 6,478 laps.

How does the chemistry you have built with your teammates off the track help you at a place like Talladega Superspeedway?

“Having good chemistry with your teammates is a really important part of speedway racing, especially on green-flag pit stops. Being able to trust each other and lean on each other to get back up to speed is really important to staying competitive. On track, it can be challenging to stay together, but being able to help each other off pit road is crucial.”

You worked well with your spotter, Eddie D’Hondt, at Daytona earlier this year and managed to maneuver through the field in your first superspeedway race with him. Since then, you’ve had more time to work together and learn each other’s language. How does that change your confidence heading into the weekend?

“Continuing to work with Eddie and just keep having clear communication is a huge help, not just on speedway races, but across all events we will run together. But I feel like I have also become more comfortable in the car with how it feels, using the mirrors, rearview camera and the visuals in the car, which helps me make the moves I need when I need them. Eddie is my eye in the sky and can see things developing in front where I don’t have the vision, so with all of those pieces coming together, I feel comfortable heading to Talladega. We aren’t going to make any changes to our processes because it’s a different track – we all feel really encouraged by the direction we are heading in, and the results will start to come as the season goes on.”

Talk about the precision superspeedway racing takes, and how difficult it is to navigate the field when you’re in the pack.

“Speedway racing is such a unique style of racing and it’s hard. But the same guys manage to be in the front of the field at these tracks and they don’t get there by mistake. Those guys have the experience and the knowledge of how to maneuver the car where they need it to be up front, and that is an important part of it. For me, continuing to build on my experience and mental notebook is a focus of mine. You have to have a strong car, but one that handles well – one that can push and be pushed and execute the strategy to have a shot at the end.”

How do you rebound from a frustrating weekend in Texas, where you had a good car and a chance to be in contention?

“The biggest thing I focus on is just the consistency and preparation each week to get back on track. You are going to face some tough weekends and you just have to trust the process. I know that if I do the right things long enough, the results will come. We have had fact racecars and we missed out on a lot of opportunities to get some really solid finishes, so I think we are just really focused on trying to eliminate those mistakes and make it to the end of the race, and we know the results we deserve will start to fall in place.”

Fidani, Bell set for season’s first street race in No. 13 AWA Corvette

DETROIT (April 17, 2024) – The next chapter in the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R program gets under way this weekend with the first street race for the first-year racecar in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

Orey Fidani, Matt Bell and AWA are set for their first appearance at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, the third round of this year’s GT Daytona (GTD) championship. The 100-minute race features a 27-car grid including 17 production-based GT entries – including the No. 13 Corvette Z06 GT3.R.

The AWA duo is coming off ninth-place class finish in last month’s Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Cadillac. This time around it’s an all-out sprint race for the No. 13 Corvette with close-quarters racing the norm between the concrete barriers along the 1.968-mile, 11-turn Long Beach street circuit.

Chevrolet and the Corvette brand have been a fixture at Long Beach since the Corvette Racing program first visited Long Beach in 2007. In 15 visits, Corvette GT cars have captured eight victories with two additional in the Corvette Daytona Prototype era. Combined with results from the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, Chevrolet boasts a total of 22 victories in the Grand Prix’s two premier events.
