Byron dominates for second Cup victory of 2024 at COTA

From starting on the pole position to racing his way to Victory Lane, William Byron rebounded from a four-race streak of not finishing in the top five to claiming his second NASCAR Cup Series victory of the 2024 season in the fourth annual EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Sunday, March 24. 

“I feel like I made a lot of mistakes in the last 10 laps, just little micro errors and Christopher [Bell] was really fast there on the longer run,’’ Byron said on FOX. “This sport is just so hard and it’s so difficult week in and week out to show up and have fast cars. We’ve had a little bit of a rough stretch the last few weeks, but just put a lot of preparation in this past week and just thankful for the team I have around me and all the people back home as well. Just super thankful to have this opportunity. It’s just a lot of fun to win races and it’s really difficult, too. We’re gonna enjoy this one.’’ 

The 2024 Daytona 500 champion from Charlotte, North Carolina, led five times for a race-high 42 of 68 scheduled laps in an event where he led the field to the green flag from pole position. After leading the first 12 laps before surrendering the top spot to pit under green as part of a strategic move, Byron would cycle back to the lead on three additional occasions throughout the event, with his latest occurring on Lap 44 after he overtook Ross Chastain for the top spot.

Then after both pitting and beating Chastain off of pit road first in what would be the start of the final cycle of green flag pit stops with 24 laps remaining, Byron returned to the lead with 17 laps remaining. He would then fend off a late charge from Christopher Bell to become the first repeat winner of the 2024 season with his first victory at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

With on-track qualifying that determined the starting lineup occurring on Saturday, March 23, Byron secured his first Cup pole position of the 2024 season after posting a pole-winning lap at 129.636 mph in 94.696 seconds. Joining him on the front row was Ty Gibbs, who clocked in the second-fastest qualifying lap at 129.651 mph in 94.685 seconds. 

Prior to the event, the following names that included Chris Buescher, Timmy Hill and Ryan Preece dropped to the rear of the field due to unapproved adjustments made to their respective entries. 

When the green flag waved and the event commenced, Byron and Gibbs battled for the lead as the field fanned out entering the first uphill turn. With Byron retaining the lead despite nearly missing the first turn, Tyler Reddick moved into the runner-up spot as he settled behind Byron while Gibbs battled teammate Christopher Bell and Corey LaJoie to retain third place. Byron would lead through a series of left and right-hand turns from Turns 2 to 9 as the field continued to fan out and jostle for early positions.  

Amid the battles, Byron would continue to lead from Turn 10 to 19 as he navigated his way to Turn 20 and returned to the frontstretch to lead the first lap. By then, Bubba Wallace and Martin Truex Jr. pitted under green after both made contact with Corey LaJoie off Turn 11.  

With the field remaining under green flag conditions, Byron would retain the lead by more than a second over Reddick and continue to lead by the fifth lap mark. Behind, Ty Gibbs trailed in third place ahead of teammate Bell and Ross Chastain while Austin Cindric, Denny Hamlin, AJ Allmendinger, Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott were scored in the top 10. By then, Harrison Burton had plummeted below the leaderboard after he got bumped and sent for a spin by Ryan Preece in Turn 1. 

Through the first 10 scheduled laps, Byron extended his advantage to more than two seconds over Ty Gibbs followed by teammate Bell while Reddick dropped to fourth place ahead of Chastain. By then, Allmendinger was in sixth ahead of Kyle Busch and Hamlin while Kyle Larson and Daniel Suarez were in the top 10. 

A few laps later, green flag pit stops commenced as Reddick, Justin Haley, Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Chris Buescher, Preece and Harrison Burton pitted. Amid the pit stops, Chase Briscoe served a pass-through penalty for cutting the corners in Turn 4. A multitude of names including Hamlin, Busch, Elliott and Shane van Gisbergen would pit during the proceeding laps before Byron surrendered the lead to pit on Lap 13. With Byron leading, Bell, who had yet to pit, cycled into the lead. 

When the first stage period concluded on Lap 15, Bell captured his second Cup stage victory of the 2024 season. Suarez trailed in second followed by Michael McDowell, Cindric, Austin Dillon and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., all of whom have yet to pit, while Byron, Gibbs, Reddick and Chastain ended up in the top 10. 

Under the stage break, select names that included Suarez, Dillon, Stenhouse, Daniel Hemric, Brad Keselowski and Kaz Grala pitted while the rest led by Bell and McDowell remained on the track. 

The second stage period started on Lap 18 as Bell and McDowell occupied the front row. Bell and McDowell battled for the lead through the first uphill turn as the field fanned out. With Byron nearly making contact with Bell through the turn, the latter retained the lead entering Turn 2. Byron overtook McDowell for the runner-up spot as McDowell went wide through the first turn while Gibbs and Reddick battled for fourth place,

Bell continued to lead through a series of left and right-hand turns from Turns 2 to 9 before he navigated through a hard braking, left-hand turn in Turn 11. With Bell leading the field back to the frontstretch, Byron retained second ahead of Reddick and Gibbs while Chastain occupied fifth place in front of Larson, Busch, Elliott, McDowell and Alex Bowman. 

Two laps later, Byron battled and cycled past Bell from Turns 12 to 19 to reassume the lead. By then, Wallace was trying to rally from being spun by Brad Keselowski in Turn 15. More on-track carnage would ensue during the proceeding laps as rookie Josh Berry spun in Turn 11 while Larson would then get turned in Turn 11 after he got hit by Bell just past Lap 21.  

Nearing the Lap 25, Byron was leading by more than two seconds over Reddick as Gibbs, Chastain and Bell trailed in the top five. Meanwhile, Kyle Busch occupied sixth place ahead of Allmendinger, Elliott, Bowman and Shane van Gisbergen while Hamlin, Justin Haley, rookie Carson Hocevar, Buescher and Joey Logano were battling in the top 15. By then, a bevy of names including Bell and Suarez pitted while Kamui Kobayashi spun in Turn 8 after getting bumped by Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who also spun amid the on-track contact with Kobayashi. 

During the proceeding laps, more green flag pit stops ensued as the leader Byron and a host of names pitted, with Denny Hamlin remaining on the track to inherit the lead in his No. 11 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry XSE. 

When the second stage period concluded on Lap 30, Hamlin, who remained on the track, captured his first Cup stage victory of the 2024 season. Blaney settled in second ahead of Martin Truex Jr., Todd Gilliland, Preece and Keselowski while John Hunter Nemechek, Byron, Hemric and Berry ended up in the top 10. 

During the stage break, some, including the leader Hamlin, pitted while the rest led by Byron remained on the track. 

With 35 laps remaining, the final stage commenced as Byron and Chastain occupied the front row. At the start, Byron and Chastain battled for the lead as the field fanned out entering the first uphill turn. Through the first turn, Byron locked his tires and went wide, allowing Chastain to overtake both Byron and Gibbs and move into the lead through the series of right and left-hand turns from Turns 2 to 9. Chastain managed to retain the lead through the final 12 turns as he led the following lap while Byron battled and overtook Gibbs for the runner-up spot.  

Five laps later, Chastain stabilized his advantage to within a second over Byron and nearly two seconds over Gibbs while Bowman was running fourth ahead of a battle between Elliott, Busch and Reddick for fifth. Soon after, however, Elliott was assessed a pass-through penalty for cutting the course in Turn 4. In addition, Busch spun in Turn 1 after getting hit by Bell’s No. 20 DeWalt Toyota Camry XSE. 

Then with 27 laps remaining, Byron made his move beneath Chastain’s No. 1 Worldwide Express Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in Turn 20 and battled dead even with him through the frontstretch to reclaim the lead. Another three laps later, Byron led Chastain to pit road for pit service under green, where the former managed to exit ahead of the latter following the service.  

As the laps dwindled and with each of the front-runners and the field diving to pit road for green flag service, Byron cycled back as the leader with 17 laps remaining after initial leader Truex pitted. With Byron leading, teammate Alex Bowman moved into second while Gibbs cycled to third place. 

Down to the final 15 laps of the event, Byron was leading by more than two seconds over teammate Bowman while Gibbs, Reddick and Bell trailed in the top five. Byron would extend his advantage to more than three seconds over teammate Bowman with 10 laps remaining as Gibbs started to gain ground on Bowman for second place.  

With five laps remaining, Byron continued to lead in his No. 24 RAPTOR Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 by more than three seconds over Gibbs. Meanwhile, Bell was running in third place while Bowman dropped to fourth ahead of Reddick, Allmendinger, Chastain, Buescher, Busch and Chase Briscoe. 

When the white flag waved and the final lap started, Byron remained as the leader by more than a second over Bell, who overtook teammate Gibbs for the runner-up spot two laps earlier. Despite Bell mounting a late charge to keep Byron close within his sights, Byron hit his marks on all 20 turns smoothly for a final time as he returned to the frontstretch victorious to claim his second checkered flag of the 2024 Cup Series season. 

With the victory, Byron achieved his 12th career win in the NASCAR Cup Series, his second of the season, his first since winning the 2024 Daytona 500 and his second on a road-course venue after winning at Watkins Glen International last August. He also became the first competitor to achieve multiple Cup victories in the 2024 campaign and the fourth competitor to win a Cup event at Circuit of the Americas in the series’ four-year run at the circuit.

Byron’s Circuit of the Americas victory was also the second ever for Hendrick Motorsports and the second NASCAR win of the weekend for the organization after teammate Kyle Larson won Saturday’s Xfinity event in Austin.

Bell, who led nine laps, settled in the runner-up spot despite having a heated post-race conversation with Kyle Busch who expressed his displeasure to Bell over the contact that sent Busch for a spin.  

“Obviously once I got to [Byron], it was going to be tough to pass him,” Bell said. “I just needed a couple mistakes. William has been really, really good on the road courses and he was flawless when it mattered today. Obviously, [Kyle Busch]’s very upset, which he ended up turned around. I had no intentions of turning him. I’m sure we’ll talk it out before the next race.” 

Ty Gibbs tied his career-best result in third place while Alex Bowman and Tyler Reddick finished in the top five. AJ Allmendinger, Chastain, Buescher, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. ended up in the top 10 in the final running order. 

*Following the post-race inspection process, Justin Haley, who initially finished 17th, was demoted to 39th, dead last, due to his Rick Ware Racing entry not meeting minimum post-race weights. 

There were 11 lead changes for seven different leaders. The race featured two cautions for four laps, both for stage break periods. In addition, 33 of 39 starters finished on the lead lap. 

Following the sixth event of the 2024 Cup Series season, Martin Truex Jr. leads the regular-season standings by five points over Ty Gibbs, nine over Ryan Blaney, 14 over Denny Hamlin and 15 over Kyle Larson.

JUSTIN ASHLEY REACHES FINALS OF POSTPONED WINTERNATIONALS AT POMONA
Final round to take place at NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix

POMONA, Calif. (March 24, 2024) – Starting the day as the No. 5 seed in the Top Fuel eliminations, Justin Ashley powered his Toyota Top Fuel Dragster to the final round of the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip. Due to inclement weather late Sunday afternoon, however, the final round of the event will take place in two weeks during the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Phoenix where Ashley will take on Tony Schumacher for the Wally Trophy.

The winning runs by Ashley on Sunday, which included defeating No. 1 qualifier Brittany Force in the semifinals, mark the 25th consecutive NHRA event Toyota has made the final round in either Top Fuel or Funny Car. When the final round commences in two weeks, Ashley will go for his third straight victory in the Winternationals.

In Funny Car, J.R. Todd followed up his win at Gainesville with a semi-finals appearance, only to fall to top qualifier, Matt Hagan. His Toyota Funny Car teammate, Ron Capps, was also a round away from the finals and a shot at his fifth Winternationals victory but was defeated by John Force.

What are your thoughts about the day and now having to wait a few weeks for the finals against Tony Schumacher?

“We were looking forward to racing in the final round in front of all the great fans that stuck it out through the rain. I’m disappointed we couldn’t get it done, but grateful that we have an opportunity to finish things up in just a few short weeks.

I have a ton of respect for Tony (Schumacher). He’s a winner and a champion for a lot of different reasons. I have the utmost respect for him and Joe Maynard (Owner, JCM Racing) and that team over there. It will be a battle no matter where we get the race in. We have a huge responsibility to the BlueBird, Versatran, and SCAG dealers that came out and waited out this weather all weekend long. Not to mention, Pomona is a home event for Phillips, and Rob Phillips was here in the house. It won’t be raced in Pomona, but it’s still the finals of the Winternationals, so all chips are on the table. In the meantime, we’ll hop into our Toyota Sequoia and head back to the shop to make the most of our week off.”

How would you describe this weekend for you and the team?

“Yeah, I think our lucky streak finally ran out here in the semis. But all in all, I’m really proud of my guys for working hard and never giving up. All in all, can’t really complain about the weekend, we were in the semifinals.”

“Yeah, with the weather conditions and track conditions, it’s definitely trickyEverybody’s in the same boat and there were some really good runs out there. Yeah, we got work to do and we’ll have our heads down and keep digging.”

“Yeah I mean, we knew all the manufacturers were in the semifinals. Obviously, you want to do well for Toyota and thought we had the advantage there with our GR Supra body. We found something right before we went up there. You know, I’m always bragging about my team that we have the ‘NAPA Know How’ and they caught something that could’ve been a bigger deal and they caught it right before we went up. So, we were a little rushed, me getting in the car and getting up there. It started sprinkling and we thought they were going to hold off but got up there last minute. I haven’t talked to Guido (Dean Antonelli, crew-chief) yet to see mechanically why it smoked the tires, but just something the car hasn’t done all weekend. We felt pretty comfortable, again like Gainesville, we had a great car. Felt like a car that could win the race. But good thing is, we have a couple weeks off and two more West Coast races, so let’s see if we can go out there and get a trophy.”

We need to do some work, but to finish right outside of the top-10, we’ve been able to do that pretty much every week this year. FINAL ROUNDS OF LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS POSTPONED TO NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS

POMONA, Calif. (March 24, 2024) – Inclement weather forced the postponement of the final round of the 64th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals on Sunday at In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.

The final rounds in Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock will now be completed at the upcoming NHRA Arizona Nationals, which is the next event on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series circuit and takes place April 5-7 at Firebird Motorsports Park in Phoenix.

In Top Fuel, Tony Schumacher and defending event winner Justin Ashley both advanced to the final round on Sunday. Schumacher reached his first final round this season after defeating Terry Totten, Gainesville winner Shawn Langdon and Billy Torrence. Ashley, meanwhile, is after his third straight win at the Winternationals and reached the finals thanks to victories against Shawn Reed, Steve Torrence and No. 1 qualifier Brittany Force. Ashley has reached the final round at the Winternationals for four straight years.

Funny Car’s John Force and reigning world champion Matt Hagan powered to the championship round at the second of 20 races during the 2024 NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Force will try to pick up his first victory in two years in Phoenix, taking down Jim Campbell, Bobby Bode and Ron Capps. Hagan is after back-to-back Winternationals victories and his 50th career Funny Car win, reaching the finals on Sunday in Pomona with round victories against Buddy Hull, Jeff Diehl and Gainesville winner J.R. Todd.

Defending world champion Erica Enders and No. 1 qualifier Dallas Glenn will meet up in the finals in Pro Stock in Phoenix. Enders, who won the season-opener in Gainesville, took down Fernando Cuadra Jr., Brandon Foster and Greg Anderson to reach the championship round. She will attempt to pick up her 50th career national event win in two weeks at Firebird Motorsports Park. Glenn, the defending Winternationals winner, got by Sienna Wildgust, David Cuadra and Mason McGaha to reach his first final round of the season.

The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series returns to action April 5-7 with the 39th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals at Firebird Motorsports Park in Phoenix.

Four Toyota drivers finish inside the top-10

AUSTIN, Texas (March 24, 2024) – Christopher Bell came from over 12 seconds back to close within a second of the lead in the final laps before finishing second to lead Toyota in the NASCAR Cup Series race at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday. Bell, who led twice for nine laps, won the first stage to earn a valuable Playoff point.

Ty Gibbs (third) and defending race winner Tyler Reddick (fifth) joined Bell inside the top-five. Gibbs has now scored five consecutive top-10 finishes.

Martin Truex Jr. (10th) was the final Toyota in the top-10, and is the Cup Series points leader heading into the Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond Raceway next weekend.

Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Kamui Kobayashi finished 30th in his second career Cup Series start after his 23XI Racing No. 50 Mobil 1 Toyota Camry was spun multiple times in Sunday’s race.

“Yeah, obviously, when I got close to him it was going to be tough to pass him. I needed a couple of mistakes. William (Bryon) has been really, really good on the road courses and he was flawless when it mattered today.”

I saw a conversation with Kyle Busch post-race. Was that about the contact in turn one?

“I mean, yeah. He’s very upset. He ended up turned around. First of all, I’m sorry to (Kyle) Larson and the 5 car. I got him earlier in the race, by no intention at all. I didn’t mean to do that. KB (Kyle Busch) is frustrated about what happened in turn one, and I don’t know. They were two-wide going in there and I haven’t seen a replay yet. I had no intentions of turning him and we will talk about it before the next race.”

How much more time did you really need?

“It seems like another lap, and I would have got there for sure with our DEWALT Camry. Passing was going to be a little more difficult, and I needed him to make a mistake.”

What happened on the race track with Kyle Busch?

“The (Kyle) Larson deal – I completely take ownership of. I’m completely sorry about that and had no intention of that. The Kyle Busch incident was a little bit different because I wasn’t trying to make a move or pass him. He opened his entry up because he was too wide, and I was obviously under him when he came down. I had no intentions of spinning him out at all.”

Could you have defended that pass to finish higher in the race?

“I don’t think so. He’s (Christopher Bell) my teammate, and he has new tires on and caught me from like a whole straightaway back. I feel like if I raced him that hard, it would have been kind of mean. I tried to let him by when he got to me, and it was just what it was. We were too loose there. This Monster Energy team is all good and we will keep digging.”

What more did you need there, Ty?

“We were just a little bit too loose on the right hand corners. I wish we were a little bit tighter, but we did a really great job today. My team did a really great job. All props to them. Thank you to Monster Energy, He Gets Us, Interstate Batteries. It was a good day for us. A good points day.”

What more did you need?

“Billy Scott (crew chief) and I were just talking about that. Nothing really sticks out for us in our Beast Unleashed Toyota Camry. The obvious thing is that we just didn’t maintain the lead as much this time around. The downforce level is a little different. I didn’t feel like we were really bad in any one spot – it seemed like we were just decent. I would run were they would put me. I feel like we got behind when I made the mistake at the beginning of stage three that kind of hurt us for a bit after we came back out on tires there in stage three. I thought we were pretty good, but I don’t know. We will go to work on it and see what we were missing, but a little bit adds up a lot on this big race track.”

What is your perspective on today’s race?

“Overall, I feel pretty good. I feel comfortable in the car. The pace was good, just no yellow. Second time, no yellow in my race. Two shots – and there is no yellow. It is a little bit disappointing, but at least, I enjoyed it and my Mobil 1 Camry felt good and the pace was there. It was a big shame because the incidents damaged my race.”

“Just an overall rough weekend, didn’t have the pace we needed with our Family Dollar Toyota, and we didn’t have the chance to try to capitalize on strategy since the race ran green. We learned a lot in our first road course of the year, so hopefully we can be better next time.”

AJ ALLMENDINGER

No. 13 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1

  • AJ Allmendinger qualified 14th for the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix.
  • Allmendinger drove up to 10th place on lap one, making it as high as sixth place by lap seven. Allmendinger reported he was happy with the car and made his first pit stop on lap 12, before finishing the stage in 14th place.
  • Allmendinger started the second stage in seventh place. On lap 25, he maintained fifth place, after a tight battle with the Nos. 8, 9 and 48. The No. 13 came down pit road on lap 27 for an air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel. After a slow stop, Allmendinger finished the second stage in 22nd.
  • The No. 13 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevy started stage three in 12th place, and by lap 41, Allmendinger was running in sixth place. As green-flag stops began, Allmendinger took over fourth place, before coming down pit road on lap 46 for a rear air pressure adjustment to help the handling of the car. Once green flag stops were complete, Allmendinger cycled through to eighth place. The No. 13 Chevy gained two more positions in the closing laps to finish sixth.

“It was a really solid day for the No. 13 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevy team. We started 14th and got up into the top six or seven. Track position is so critical. On one of the pit stops, we got hung up there and lost about five or six spots, and that kind of put us to the next group of cars. We were able to fight back through that. Just really proud of everybody at Kaulig Racing. Of course you always want to win, but it went about as good as it could.” – AJ Allmendinger  

SHANE van GISBERGEN

No. 16 WeatherTech Camaro ZL1

  • Shane van Gisbergen qualified 12th for the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix.
  • Struggling with rear grip to start the first stage, van Gisbergen slipped to 13th by lap five. His WeatherTech Chevrolet began coming to him as the first stage progressed, and he made it up to 11th when the 16 team made its first green-flag pit stop of the day on lap 12. Following a four tire stop, van Gisbergen ended the opening stage in 20th.
  • Van Gisbergen stayed out during the first stage break and started the second stage from 13th. Following the changes made to his WeatherTech Chevrolet, van Gisbergen cracked the top 10 on lap 23. He made another scheduled green-flag pit stop on lap 25 from the 10th position. After receiving a speeding penalty during his stop, van Gisbergen was issued a pass-through penalty and was scored 31st at the end of stage two.
  • Staying out once again under the stage two break, van Gisbergen cycled to 19th for the start of stage three on lap 33. After making it up to 13th on lap 40, van Gisbergen reported an issue with first gear. He made it up to second, stretching the fuel run until lap 50, when he made his final pit stop for four tires, fuel and adjustments. Following the stop, van Gisbergen rejoined the field in 21st where he finished the race.

“Tough day for our WeatherTech team. We battled some issues all day and could just never overcome everything. I appreciate all the hard work from everyone at Kaulig and Trackhouse. We will try again at Talladega in a few weeks.” – Shane van Gisbergen  

DANIEL HEMRIC

No. 31 Cirkul Camaro ZL1

  • Daniel Hemric qualified 33rd for the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix.
  • The opening stage remained caution-free, and Hemric finished 11th in the No. 31 Cirkul Camaro ZL1, as the majority of the field short-pitted the stage.
  • Hemric made his first pit stop of the day during the first stage break, receiving four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. He started the second stage from 23rd and made it to ninth, where he finished the stage, as the field short-pitted again.
  • Hemric pitted during the second stage break for more tires and fuel, electing to make no changes to the No. 31 Cirkul Camaro ZL1. He started the final stage in 30th but acquired heavy damage after he was hit by the No. 41 car. Hemric was forced to pit for repairs and went down a lap in the process. He made his final pit stop of the day for scuff tires and fuel with 17 laps remaining. He nursed the No. 31 to the end of the race and was scored 38th.

“Really unfortunate final stage for us after a decent first two stages. I felt pretty good about our No. 31 Cirkul Chevy, and we even got a couple of stage points. We just got hit hard and had to nurse it until the end. Hopefully we can turn our luck around next week at Richmond.” – Daniel Hemric

“Oh yeah, it was fun for sure. I wasn’t quite sure what to do with a long front straightaway like this, but just super thankful for this team. Rudy, all the guys on this race team – it’s pretty amazing what we have been able to do the last couple of years, but we just have to keep working hard and keep it going. Nothing is guaranteed in this sport, and we just have to keep it going.”

WHAT WAS THAT LAST RUN LIKE FOR YOU WHEN YOU KNEW GUYS WERE CHASING YOU AND ESPECIALLY WITH CHRISTOPHER BELL CLOSING IN?

“Yeah, he was really fast at the end. The Toyotas had the long run speed kind of all weekend, so for us, it was just trying to get a gap on the short run; manage our tires and just kind of keep our car in a good spot. I definitely gave up a lot of time the last five laps, so we still have work to do.”

WHEN YOU STARTED IN THIS SPORT, DID YOU THINK AT THIS POINT OF YOUR CAREER YOU WOULD ALREADY HAVE TWO ROAD COURSE WINS?

“No, honestly the road courses were probably the most difficult thing for us starting out and then we just continued to build on it. We had a lot of pole positions on road courses, but we weren’t able to close the deal. A lot of that was on me and knowing what I need in the car to push the whole race. It’s come a long way.”

YOU LOOK A LITTLE WORN OUT.. NO NATURAL CAUTIONS TODAY. HOW MUCH DID YOU HAVE TO MANAGE IN THE CAR?

“I wouldn’t say I am worn out; I am just bummed. Probably just got stuck out in traffic after our last pit stop. It was a bad spot that I had to run too hard on low air and beat the rear tires up. Kind of inched in on William (Byron) for a bit, but then the rear tires just went away. Yeah, definitely had to manage it some. Definitely some tire fall off here.

We had a good Ally Camaro, we just needed to hold on to rear grip longer. It’s been the same since we unloaded and we definitely made it better, but still kind of fighting the same thing. Blake and the guys called a good race. We had a good day, just sucks to come up a couple short again.”

AJ Allmendinger, No. 13 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1

Finished: 6th

“It was a really solid day for the No. 16 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevy team. We started 14th and got up into the top six or seven. Track position is so critical. On one of the pit stops, we got hung up there and lost about five or six spots, and that kind of put us to the next group of cars. We were able to fight back through that. Just really proud of everybody at Kaulig Racing. Of course you always want to win, but it went about as good as it could.”

Ross Chastain, No. 1 Worldwide Express Camaro ZL1

Finished: 7th

“It was an uneventful day for the No. 1 Worldwide Express Chevy team. We flipped each stage and that kept us up front. When we had the lead, it was the same as all day; just too loose and couldn’t hold William (Byron) off. He was obviously really strong. We made a swing at a big adjustment there at the end on that final green-flag stop and it went the wrong way. It definitely hurt our car. We dropped back a long ways from where we were, but I’m proud of the effort. Proud of the rebound in speed for me and this No. 1 car. My teammates have been really strong at road courses. I’ve been trying for the better part of a year and a half to improve on road courses, and this is a small step in the right direction.”

Austin Dillon, No. 3 Get Bioethanol Camaro ZL1

Finished: 26th

“The No. 3 Get Bioethanol Chevy team obviously didn’t get the finish that we wanted at COTA. We got fifth-place stage points, and then had to come from the rear. We got damage on the front-end, and we just never really recovered from that. We got spun and then had to save fuel that last run. We have to figure out what we could have done better so we could have gone hard that last run. We’ll just keep plugging along.”

CHRIS BUESCHER, No. 17 Fastenal Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 8th)

“We were behind the eight ball to get started there, having to drop to the rear. We had a freak deal happen with a parts failure in practice and qualifying. That was unfortunate but I am proud of everybody on this Fastenal Ford Mustang team to pick ‘em off all day long. That was the name of the game. We knew we would be in a really tough spot all day and we knew we would need a handful of things to fall our way if we were going to compete for a win. I am proud of the top 10 finish. We had some big gains. We have some stuff that we learned and we will be better next time.”

WERE YOU SURPRISED THE RACE WENT CAUTION FREE OUTSIDE OF THE STAGES TODAY? “Without the cautions and with the restart zone being in a better place I think everyone just tried to control a lot of that. It was very crazy last time but it certainly was not our best foot forward as a sport. I don’t know how the race was overall but I would have liked a couple of more shots to try something in this race. Certainly we survived with minimal chaos up there at the top of turn one and had a pretty smooth and clean race really.”

JOEY LOGANO, No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 11th)

“We passed a few cars and then we always flipped the stages. We were trying to go for a finish. 11th, the way our season has gone so far, we will take that and start scratching and clawing our way up in the points. We probably left a few out there with the stages but overall we had decent pace at the end. Nothing to win with but something we can run with in the top 10 if we were up there. On to Richmond. I am looking forward to that one.”

RYAN BLANEY, No. 12 Menards/Jack Links Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 12th)

“We didn’t start great. We got some stage points in Stage 2 and then the start of Stage 3 we were really good and drove up to the low teens and I spun out passing somebody into 11. That set us back. Then we drove back through the field to finish 12th. I thought we got pretty decent at the end, we just didn’t start up front. Spinning out didn’t help. We probably could have run seventh or eighth but we still have some work to do.”

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 14 Mahindra Tractors Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 13th)

“Our race was overall okay. I felt like, starting 31st that for the first couple of laps we were able to drive up to 17th and were going to be in a really good spot coming to the end of Stage 1. I bottomed out really hard into the esses and it made me miss a corner and that really changed the whole complexity of our race. I had to go to the back and then drove back up there to the top 10. At the end with eight to go I made a huge mistake and got in the dirt in Turn 8 and allowed those guys to all swallow me up those last couple of laps. I thought we made our Mustang better through the day. I thought we had a solid 10th place car but we don’t really have anything else for the rest of the guys. We need to do some work but to finish right outside of the top 10, we have been able to do that pretty much every week this year. If we aren’t in the top 10 we are just a couple of spots outside of it. We have been really consistent which is nice. We just neeed to get a little bit better and then hopefully we can improve on the finishes.”

JUSTIN HALEY, No. 51 Fraternal Order of Eagles Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 17th)

“We had an okay day. I thought we did everything right up until the end when we had a slow pit stop and kind of faded from there. I am really happy with the results we are getting. We have such a small team and we are trying as hard as we can. I appreciate everyone at Ford and RFK for giving us the information they give us and I am glad we are starting to apply it.”
