AJ Allmendinger Returns to the NASCAR Xfinity Series Full-Time for the 2024 Season

Allmendinger to run part-time schedule in the NASCAR Cup Series

Lexington, N.C. (December 7, 2023) – Kaulig Racing announces AJ Allmendinger will return to full-time competition in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) to pilot the No. 16 Chevrolet Camaro for the 2024 season.

Since joining Kaulig Racing in 2019, Allmendinger has earned two consecutive NXS Regular Season Championships, 15 wins and 10 pole awards. In 2023, Allmendinger competed in five NXS races, earning two wins, four top fives, five top-10 finishes and three pole awards.

“We feel AJ [Allmendinger] returning full time to our Xfinity Series program gives us the best chance to continue growing our organization as a whole,” team president, Chris Rice said. “He’s passionate, he’s aggressive and he pushes us to keep getting better. We’re excited to see what we can accomplish in the 2024 season on both the Xfinity and Cup side.”

Allmendinger has played a pivotal role in solidifying Kaulig Racing’s growth and success across NASCAR’s premier series after winning the 2021 Verizon 200 at the Brickyard in the team’s seventh NCS start. He went on to win the team’s second NCS race in the 2023 Bank of America ROVAL 400.

“To Kaulig Racing, AJ is much more than the trophies he’s won or the banners he’s hung in our shop,” said team owner, Matt Kaulig. “AJ has always embraced what we are trying to do as an organization, and his contribution to the culture at Kaulig Racing is what truly makes him forever a part of our family.”

Allmendinger will continue to play a vital role in both Kaulig Racing’s NXS and NCS programs in 2024.

“My plans for 2024 have always been whatever Matt Kaulig and Chris Rice think is best for the team,” said AJ Allmendinger. “We’ve got work to do on both our Xfinity and Cup side as we continue to grow but I think we are putting ourselves in the best position to keep improving. With Josh Williams coming on board, it’ll be fun to learn each other’s driving styles and work together as teammates on Saturdays. I’m excited to be a part everything we’re working on at Kaulig Racing and see what we can get done next season.”

Allmendinger’s NCS schedule as well as partners for both series will be announced at a later date.

Extreme H, FIA and FIA Formula 1 World Championship to establish joint Hydrogen Technical Working Group

Extreme H, the world’s first hydrogen-powered motor racing championship, to commence from 2025

7 December 2023, London: The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the FIA Formula One World Championship and Extreme H, the world’s first off-road hydrogen motor racing championship, which will commence in 2025, have today announced plans to establish a joint Hydrogen Working Group.

The group, comprised of representatives from all three organisations including Mark Grain, Extreme E Technical Director – who is leading the series’ transition to Extreme H – Pat Symonds, F1 Chief Technical Officer, and Nikolas Tombazis, FIA Single Seater Director, will bring together their collective expertise in a strategic alliance to evaluate developments and potential applications for hydrogen within motorsport and wider mobility.

The objective of the Hydrogen Working Group between Formula 1, the FIA and Extreme H is to monitor the progression and development of hydrogen technology – both for the fuel cells and battery systems which will be used in Extreme H’s first-generation racing chassis – as well as hydrogen technology within race site infrastructure, transportation, charging, storage and management, and its safety implications.

Extreme E, which debuted in 2021, has already established itself as a leader in sustainable technologies, with a unique racing format that combines off-road racing in electric SUVs, a mandatory gender-equal driver line-up in each team, and a mission to highlight climate change issues and environmental impact. In March 2022, it announced plans to transition to the first-ever hydrogen-powered racing series – Extreme H – from the 2025 season.

Development of the first Extreme H series is underway, with plans in place to launch a prototype hydrogen-powered chassis with its partner Spark with a first full-speed shakedown towards the end of this year, ahead of a comprehensive testing programme in early 2024.

Alongside the FIA, Extreme E has agreed a pathway for the hydrogen series, Extreme H, to become an FIA Championship from its inaugural season in 2025, with the intention that it will become an FIA World Championship from 2026. This planned framework leading to FIA World Championship status, pending the relevant approvals by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, demonstrates the series’ progression since its inception in 2021 and a strong statement of intent for its growth towards its hydrogen-powered future.

As technical regulator and sporting authority of the Extreme E championship, the FIA will be responsible for all technical, sporting and safety regulations for the competition.

There is already plenty of crossover as well as scope for cooperation in the alliance between F1 and Extreme E: three of Extreme E’s teams are owned by F1 World Champions Sir Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button, and McLaren Racing has teams both in Extreme E and Formula E. The two organisations are aligned in their commitment to the development of sustainable technologies, climate change and impact awareness, as well as increased diversity within motorsport.

Mark Grain, Technical Director, Extreme E, said: “It’s a privilege to be working alongside Formula 1 and the FIA as we continue to develop our world-first hydrogen racing proposition. Our transition to Extreme H makes us the pioneers and first-ever testbed of hydrogen technology in motorsport – not only in our racing cars, but also transportation, infrastructure, refuelling processes and safety regulations. It’s a ground-breaking initiative and we look forward to collaborating with Formula 1 and Pat [Symonds] both technically and operationally, as we continue to champion new technologies and break boundaries on behalf of motorsport, with hydrogen at the forefront.”

Nikolas Tombazis, FIA Single Seater Director, said: “As the governing body for both the FIA Formula 1 World Championship and the upcoming FIA Extreme H Championship in 2025, we welcome this latest collaboration. The FIA Technical Department has experience and knowhow in the area of hydrogen technology which we will be bring to the Working Group along with sporting, safety and regulatory expertise. As is currently the case across the entire FIA motorsport portfolio, we will take learnings from this collaboration for the benefit of our sport and mobility.”

Pat Symonds, Chief Technical Officer, Formula 1, said: “Our sport has a tradition of bringing new technologies to the forefront of public perception in incredibly short timescales. We do this by being open-minded to all solutions and embracing cross-functional engineering. With climate change mitigation at the forefront of everyone’s mind we are committed to promoting sustainability and therefore need to explore all areas of decarbonisation of the mobility sector. This must include sustainable liquid hydrocarbon fuels, electrification and hydrogen. This Working Group enables a collaboration which will allow us to gain first-hand experience and contribute to the understanding and development of the many aspects of hydrogen propulsion that Extreme H will embrace.”

The first sport to ever be built out of a social purpose, Extreme E – and the FIA Extreme H Championship from 2025 – aims to minimise environmental impact while maximising awareness, racing in places that have already been damaged or affected by climate change or human interference, and taking fans deep into the heart of the most pressing issues facing our planet’s future.

Further details about the forthcoming FIA Extreme H Championship and its chassis development will be revealed in due course, with chassis testing to commence in the coming weeks.

BOW, New Hampshire — Throughout Tom Sheehan’s career in the Big Machine Vodka SPIKED Coolers TA2 season, he has followed the words of the legendary Mario Andretti.

“Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s the determination and commitment to unrelenting pursuit of your goal, a commitment to excellence, that will enable you to attain the success you seek.”

Last year, Tom placed 20th in the championship standings, opting to not compete in the West Coast races at Laguna Seca and Sonoma Raceway. Although he finished P9 in Lime Rock Park and three finishes of P15 or better, he placed P20 in the championship standings.

In the early stanzas of this 2023 season, Tom made the most of some challenging afternoons at Sebring, New Orleans and Road Atlanta. Placing P22 and P19 in the opening three races, Tom overcame a tough race day at Lime Rock with a strong showing in the Detroit Grand Prix doubleheader weekend. Finishing P19 and P7, Tom started to turn the tide with his TA2 efforts.

“What a weekend,” Tom said. “It is a testament to persevering. While I struggled out of the trailer, my guys kept working. The Cope camp was in full gear, making lots of good changes along with lots of teamwork. It feels great to give the team a top 10.”

Following the Mid-Ohio race weekend, Tom ranked P20 but within striking distance of P15 in the championship standings. After Tom reeled off two strong efforts at Road America and Nashville, respectively finishing P13 and P12, Tom moved up to P17 in the championship standings.

Equally as important, Tom joined the Mike Cope Racing efforts during the Big Machine Music City Grand Prix weekend in Nashville. The resilient, methodical Granite State native saw his pace and efforts elevate to a competitive, solid level for strong race weekends.

As Tom said after the Nashville race weekend, “It was our first weekend running exclusively with Mike Cope. Great experience for me, the Mike Cope Racing team made great changes to the setup all weekend. In qualifying, we didn’t have it where we wanted it, but I wasn’t discouraged at all. We knew that the car was working really well. We just had to get it tuned up to what the track was going to give us.”

While Watkins Glen and World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway briefly stalled Tom’s momentum, he roared back to stellar P12 at VIRginia International Raceway, the penultimate race of the season.

Heading into the season finale at Circuit of the Americas, Tom was confident about his chances to tally a strong finish at the FIA Grade 1 road course in Austin, Texas. Starting P29, Tom rocketed his way up to P11 by Lap 23.

Within striking distance of P10, mechanical issues derailed an otherwise promising performance by Tom on Lap 25 near Turn 14. Provisionally placing P31, Tom’s official result was P22.

Although the 2023 campaign concluded with a trying circumstance, Tom kept his head up following a race and season with prominent silver linings.

“It’s the machine, right? It’s a big part of the deal,” Tom said. “The guys will figure out what happened. I don’t know if the motor let go or tightened up or it just ended up on that last restart. It was running good. And then, I don’t know, I got the car a little jacked up, but I kept my foot in it.

“I think it was making power all the way to the end. It just wouldn’t restart. I think it just got hot. I don’t think the motor gave up. But the guys will figure out what’s going on.”

COTA was a summation of Tom’s 2023 season, a great improvement over last year. A season best result of P7 in the second Detroit doubleheader race was complimented by three finishes of P13 or better.

Sure, the result may have not been indicative of the gains made by Tom and his Mike Cope Racing team. Still, Tom pointed out how he and his crew overcame some challenges to challenge for P10 in the season finale.

“It was a good weekend for the race. We raced well. We just kind of plateaued at that pace all weekend,” Tom remarked. “We couldn’t really get out of that box of running those low fifteens. And, you know, we pulled off I think one lap that was a little bit better on the weekend.

“But in the race, I could just keep doing that lap. And that kind of turned into the pace in the top 10. And guys were savage out there. They weren’t giving anybody anything. And, there was some attrition.”

Likewise, Tom tipped his cap to his crew much like HVAC professionals appreciating LTK’s insulation jackets to get the job done. Much like a homeowner or business owner who protects their pipes and edifices with Made in America, high quality products, Tom appreciated his team’s steadfast efforts.

“I passed a lot of cars,” Tom said. “It was a lot of fun and it was a good drive but we just didn’t get the result. I’ve got a great crew. My guys worked really hard all year. We’ll get ready for next year and just keep working hard and. Look for the day when the chips all fall into the right bag and we can pull out a great result.”

Time and time again, Tom will be the first to point out how racing and mechanical insulation share time certainty and reward organization. The pride of New Hampshire knows that those two intangibles hold true as a resilient, perseverant TA2 competitor.

“When you’re working on being a better driver and the guys are working on giving you a better car, the team’s working on just being better, the chemistry and the results don’t always shake out to those efforts,” Tom observed. “But eventually, there’s a reward because that consistency is what really counts in racing. If you can be there knocking on the door, you’re going to get in.”

Heading into the offseason, Tom has a lot to be appreciative about with the optimistic road ahead of him in 2024. In the words of actress Terry Farrell, “The journey never ends. There’s always something to look forward to.”

In Tom’s case, with next year’s season opener at Sebring International Raceway less than three months away, it is about elevating his craft. By being proactive and taking charge like LTK’s high-quality jackets and covers, Tom knows the good times may just be ahead of him as he prepares for his 14th season in TA2 in 2024.

“When you plateau, it’s hard to break over the plateau. But for anybody that ever sees themselves as plateau, they just got to keep digging,” Tom shared. “There’s that awkward feeling of frustration, confusion or apprehension. The next thing that’s going to happen is you’re going to level up. That’s kind of what follows that. So don’t get frustrated at all the other stuff you have to do before you level up.

“You just got to embrace that too. That’s part of it, you know? We’re going to take this season and next year try to fire off better. And the results will come. We keep doing what we did today and we’re going to find ourselves in a pretty good spot.”

HOLLEY EFI NAMED TITLE SPONSOR OF NHRA FACTORY X, WHICH IS SLATED FOR EIGHT RACES IN 2024

INDIANAPOLIS (Dec. 6, 2023) – NHRA officials announced today that Holley EFI has been named the title sponsor of its exciting Factory X category, which is reserved for 2019 and newer manufactured automobiles, including the Chevrolet COPO Camaro, Dodge Challenger Drag Pak, and Ford Mustang Cobra Jet.

NHRA Holley EFI Factory X made its official debut during the 2023 season and is slated to compete at eight events during the 2024 campaign, starting at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on April 12-14 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

After appearing four times in 2023, NHRA Holley EFI Factory X, which combines supercharged Hemi, LS, or Coyote engines, with manual transmissions and lightweight, late-model, factory-appearing bodies – each powered by Holley EFI – will have its first full season in 2024 as the class continues to draw impressive interest from both drivers and race fans.

“Holley has been a part of NHRA since its inception and we have enjoyed progressing our business from carbs to modern EFI. It’s a huge thrill to continue to be involved with NHRA Factory X and to see the evolution of this amazing new class,” said Jason Bruce, Holley Performance Products Vice President of Sales. “These cars are just so exciting and provide a great new cool factor for NHRA fans. We’re seeing interest growing and new cars being built, and you can feel the excitement for this class continuing to build at a very fast rate. These Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers truly represent what a modern muscle car is and it’s a class that has really caught on with the fans as well, and that’s great to see.”

Following the season-opener in Las Vegas, NHRA Holley EFI Factory X will appear at the next two NHRA national events in Charlotte and Chicago. That follows with a trip to Norwalk in June and then the prestigious Dodge Power Brokers NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indy, finishing the season with races in St. Louis, Dallas and the finale in Las Vegas.

In a short time, the class already showcased immense potential and tremendous performances in 2023, with Allen Johnson making the first 200-mph run in St. Louis to begin the “Jesel 200 MPH Club.” With low seven-second runs already made this past season, there’s a chance big-performance numbers and standout runs in the six-second range in 2024, which would create even more excitement in the lightweight, modified class.

“NHRA Holley EFI Factory X is such an outstanding class and we’re thrilled to partner with a company like Holley that has recognized the great potential in this category,” said Brad Gerber, NHRA Vice President and Chief Development Officer. “The class enjoyed a very successful debut in 2023 and it’s going to be very exciting to have NHRA Holley EFI Factory X race its first full season in 2024 and compete at eight NHRA national events. When they’re on the track, they put on an incredible show and it’s going to continue to be a huge hit with fans.”

Cars in NHRA Holley EFI Factory X have a minimum weight limit of 2,650 pounds, which is nearly 1,000 pounds lighter than a Factory Stock Showdown car, and a manual transmission is mandatory. The COPO Camaros race with a 630-hp Magnuson 2.65-L supercharger, and the DragPak Challengers utilize a 630-hp, 3.0-L Whipple. The Cobra Jet 327 Mustang’s engine combination is a 610-hp, 3.0-L Whipple unit.

Each body must be OEM dimensional, meaning there can be no alterations to the bodies, and each must feature steel-roof and quarter-body panels. Cars in NHRA Holley EFI Factory X race on tires that are 33 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide as well, which are wider than FSS cars.

Spire Motorsports Fills Out 2024 NASCAR Cup Series Crew Chief Lineup

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (December 6, 2023) – Spire Motorsports has filled out its NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) crew chief lineup as preparations for the 2024 season continue to accelerate.

Stephen Doran and Luke Lambert have been named as the crew chiefs for the team’s Nos. 71 and 77 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1s, respectively.

Doran will guide the effort for 2022 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series (NCTS) Champion Zane Smith while Lambert will serve as crew chief for standout Carson Hocevar.

“Stephen Doran and Luke Lambert are veterans of the sport, exemplary individuals and we’re thrilled to welcome them both to Spire Motorsports,” said Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson. “Stephen is an accomplished racer who earned this position through practical knowledge, hard work and success. He’s been part of championship-caliber teams in the past and we’re confident that he’ll play a significant role in helping Spire Motorsports continue to raise our competitive bar. Luke Lambert is a complete professional and highly regarded competitor who has worked with Carson in the past. His demeanor and ability to connect with his drivers is what makes him a perfect fit. He has worked directly with Ryan Sparks previously, so that points directly to the synergy we’re looking for amongst our competition group.”

This marks Doran’s first opportunity as a Cup Series crew chief and said he is already impressed with the 24-year-old Smith.

“I didn’t know Zane personally, but when I started to go through his career, I noticed he’s consistently won in everything he’s raced and made the most of every opportunity he’s had along the way,” said Doran. “Zane and I have talked a lot lately and I think this is going to be a great fit. Our personalities mesh well and I think communication will be great on and off the track. I knew right away in our first meeting that he was the guy I wanted to do this with. He has all the intangibles that make an elite driver in the Cup Series. I am grateful for this opportunity and think Zane and this No. 71 team will create a lot of excitement and turn some heads in 2024.”

Smith is a nine-time NCTS race winner who completed his fourth full-time season this year. He has also run nine NCS races over the last two seasons, highlighted by a 10th-place finish in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May.

Doran made the move from Butler, Pa., to Level Cross, N.C., in 2006 to start his NASCAR career at Petty Enterprises. Since 2012, the 38-year-old Doran has worked at Stewart-Haas Racing and has been on the No. 4 car driven by Kevin Harvick since 2014.

The No. 71 team is a collaboration between Spire Motorsports and Trackhouse Racing for the 2024 campaign. In September, Trackhouse announced a multi-year driving agreement with Smith and its aim to run three full-time NCS entries in 2025.

Lambert, a native of Mount Airy, N.C., comes to Spire Motorsports from LEGACY MOTOR CLUB where he guided the team’s No. 42 NCS effort, connecting with Hocevar when he drove for the team in eight of the final 10 races of 2023.

Prior to his time at Legacy M.C., Lambert made his mark in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition, leading Noah Gragson and JR Motorsports’ No 9 team to three poles, eight wins, 21 top-five and 26 top-10 finishes in 2022.

Lambert, 41, has also spent time a top the pit box at Roush Fenway Racing and Richard Childress Racing.

The 2005 North Carolina State graduate has led the competition efforts for some of the sport’s most notable names including Jeff Burton, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler and Chris Buescher. In 2014, Lambert led Newman to a berth in the Championship 4, and ultimately a runner-up finish in the NCS championship point standings.

Hocevar, 20, made his NCS debut for Spire Motorsports June 4 at World Wide Technology Raceway and has made eight more starts in NASCAR’s premier division. He earned an impressive career/series best 11th-place finish at the Bass Pro Shops Night Race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in just his fourth start.
He is a four-time NCTS race winner and a standout at every level in which he’s competed.

“I’m thrilled to join the men and women at Spire Motorsports and be part of everything they’re building,” said Lambert. “Carson Hocevar has shown tremendous potential and that was apparent during our time together last year. He knows how to get the most out of his race car and how to communicate effectively with his team. I’m looking forward to working with him again in this new capacity and building on our experience with one another.”
